State/VT Live Blogging

Oh, you had best believe there will be a live blog today. I already mowed the grass and watched my kid’s soccer game, so that’s enough fresh air and sunshine for one day. Just me, the TV, perhaps a few libations, and all of you good people reading our humble blog.

I’m not going to be shy about things, either. We are better than Virginia Tech. 8 times out of 10, we would beat them. Let’s hope our positive run continues today. And if we cut out the dumb mistakes, this could be a blowout, like that fateful home 3:30 game against Clemson in 1986 (thanks for the memories, Erik Kramer and Dick Sheridan). This is our best chance at an ACC title since that season, so let’s take care of business.

3:36 – Pack will get the ball first. Need to get 7 and set the tone early.

3:38 – Nice start – 31 yards to Jarvis Williams. Great catch, and replay will confirm.

3:42 – Holy Lord, that was almost a disaster. But I think RW just picked it up.

3:44 – Like clockwork. Keep blitzing, Bud Foster. Doing that to Russell Wilson is just like tossing Brer Rabbit into the brier patch. He will drink your milkshake all day long. One hell of a job pass blocking by Mustafa Greene, too. 7-0, Pack. The exact start we needed. The exact start I expected. Folks, this team is good.

3:46 – Clemson’s going to lose. As long as we beat Florida State, it’s now much more feasible to win the Atlantic even if we lose in Death Valley. And we WILL beat Florida State. Count on it.

3:51 – Audie Cole sacks Tyrod Taylor, continuing his tour de force. I have never seen a player improve more over a single offseason than Cole. And the other team’s punter shanks one! Gee, it feels nice for that shoe to be on the other foot for once. Repeat after me: Go. For. The. Kill.

3:55 – Great play calling, but Spencer doesn’t run the route full speed. And the flag is only running into the kicker. Shit, that sucks.

4:00 – Welcome back, Nate Irving. And a Pick Almost Six for Barnes!

4:02 – Nobody outthinks Dana Bible. Beautiful play fake, and all Hokie defenders are worried about Wilson’s legs. And Dean Haynes is totally uncovered for the touchdown. 14-0, Pack. Virginia Tech is not designed to play from way behind. Cole and Irving have to be licking their chops!

4:05 – Great hangtiome on both of Josh’s kickoffs so far. Awesome.

4:12 – Audie Cole with more badass-ery, and the Hokies punt. Long field for RW, but who cares?

4:16 – Uh, it’s not a long field anymore! An absolutely perfect first quarter of football. Laying back in coverage isn’t working out any better for Foster’s charges. Like we hoped for – A STATEMENT GAME. Enjoy it. Savor it. Get used to it.

4:19 – The cats are napping on opposite couches, so I tried to get them to do the Wolf! Pack!! cheer. They were not amused.

4:22 – That’s the ugliest field goal make you will ever see (beyond extra point range). No idea how that wasn’t blocked. I think it’s 4 down territory inside the 30 for us the rest of the way. 17-0, but a bit of a moral victory for the Hokies there. They staunched the bleeding.

4:28 – Three and out. Tyrod Taylor is very athletic, but his instincts are for shit. Beautiful punt, but again – who cares about field position when you have Russell Wilson and our cadre of WRs? 24-0 sounds pretty good to me. I bet it does to Dana Bible, too.

4:36 – Nate Irving blows up the 3rd and short run. Hokies in total disarray.

4:40 – Moooooooooooose!

4:43 – Great play-calling, but poor execution. The reverse and the shovel pass each would have gone for big yardage. Instead, we have 3rd and 17 from midfield. Time to put up a deep jumpball, and whatever happens, happens.

4:45 – We do, and it’s picked off. But it’s the same as a pretty decent punt. Another good play call.

4:51 – But the Pack gives up a big play, then can’t come up with a 3rd down stop and hold VT to three. 17-7. Need to turn that into 24-7 before the half.

4:55 – Four down territory.

4:56 – Another great call, just a hair underthrown. Missing lots of opportunities here, and the crowd’s deflated.

5:01 – If there’s any justice, Owen Spencer is first team all-ACC.

5:03 – Don’t like that timeout. You don’t want to leave VT with any time left on the clock, especially if we are crazy enough to attempt a field goal in a few plays.

5:06 – Good observation by the announcer. State has been getting bogged down between the opponent’s 30 and 40 all season long.

5:10 – Just an awful 2nd quarter for Russell Wilson. Shades of UCF, for sure. At least we are spared another frightening FG attempt, and it should be 17-7 at the half. Very disappointing after such a great start.

5:14 – The Giants are laying down for the Padres and making all Braves fans very nervous. These last few seconds are taking an eternity.

Halftime – NC State 17, Virginia Tech 7.

5:18 – Just an aside, but is there anything more unrealistic than all the “Yay, we’re going to have a baby!” pregnancy test commercials? I would venture that 98% of all pregnancy tests puchased in the US are taken with fervent prayers for the minus sign. Show the happy negative people. Those are your target customers, damn it!

5:40 – Kickoff returned for six. Holy f-ing shit.

5:43 – Thank God – a first down. Need momentum back.

5:47 – Hokie DBs should try more coverage and less head hunting. And we get six on the next play. Na-ha (h/t Nelson Muntz)

5:50 – I will relax and be satisfied when the lead is up to 38-13. No reason in the world for it not to be.

5:53 – Much better kickoff. Much better coverage. Tighten up, damn it. No more drama needed.

5:57 – But the defense wasn’t listening, and a simple off-tackle play goes for 50+ and a TD. Two-pointer succeeds and it’s 24-21. Very, very bad football on those last two plays. It’s quite easy to flush away an early, big lead if you get soft like this.

5:59 – This is the first time since the opening drive by Western Carolina that I have been pissed off watching us play. We are a better football team. We should be kicking ass.

6:07 – A $#$@*&^$# field goal was NOT what we needed there. The Hokies have all the momentum, and their next TD would put them in the lead. This game is absolutely infuriating.

6:11 – East 20-yard pickup. I’ve started drinking now.

6:13 – Why the shit did we accept that penalty????

6:15 – We barely survive that stupid-assed decision, and it’s first down from our own 4.

6:19 – Just a terrible f-ing quarter of football. Disgusting, really.

6:23 – Everyone in the crowd seems to sense it. To go with some old school Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Give it away, give it away, give it away now…”

6:26 – The second half tackling has really sucked.

6:29 – We have absolutely laid down for Virginia Tech. It’s sickening. This has turned into last year’s team at the absolute most inopportune time. Why, oh why do we EVER get our hopes up?

6:32 – If you’re not drinking heavily, I highly suggest that you start.

6:39 – Unless we get a miracle, I could easily see the season unravel.

6:45 – And of course, multiple flags for TJ’s uber-dance heavy punt return. Can’t do anything right unless VPI just f-cks up. Maybe if their secondary falls down we can manage to score.

6:47 – Wow, is Les Miles ever going to get fired. He just gave the game away to Tennessee with remarkably stupid clock and personnel management on the two yard line (even by his own stupid standards).

6:51 – We are getting REMARKABLY favorable officiating. And holy crap, Tennessee had 12 men on the field for Les Miles’ dumb-f-ckery, and they get another play and score. Wow.

6:55 – It’s going to come down to a Hokie FG attempt. I would almost rather let them score and take my chances with the offense. But the offense has sucked as badly as our tackling in the second half. I am still incredibly steamed. Even if we win, I’m going to be pissed. We can’t keep gifting points and possessions like this.

7:01 – I loathe how we’ve played this half. Just awful.

7:04 – Thank God we screwed up the tackle again and let the WR score. And that he was too stupid to kneel on the one yard line.

7:06 – That 2-point stop was huge for those who got a bet in when the line was 5.5. Woohoo!

7:09 – And Russell completes the bed shitting. But don’t single him out – it truly was a TEAM bed shitting effort. Goodbye, signature win. Goodbye, program momentum. Goodbye, any scintilla of optimism.

Your Final Score – Virginia Tech 41, NC State 30. Congratulations, Pack. You really deserved this loss.

I haven’t read through all these posts, so maybe someone brought this up earlier, but is there a good reason why Greene isn’t getting substantially more carries than Haynes? I’m certainly no football expert, so maybe I’m missing something, but every time I’ve watched, Greene seems to be a much more explosive and consistent threat, whereas Haynes keeps getting plugged at the line over and over again. Especially in this game, the difference just seemed like night and day to me.

Thanks so much for the kind words TAEHokie. Taylor is a really gifted athlete.

  3. Wulfpack 10/02/2010 at 9:10 PM #

Folks, Wake is up on GT 17-6. The same GT who lost to Kansas, who the week prior lost to South Dakota. I’m just saying…

  4. Wulfpack 10/02/2010 at 9:11 PM #

Taylor also made very wise decisions today.

  5. tjfoose1 10/02/2010 at 10:02 PM #

TAEdisonHokie – great game for you guys. Lots to be proud about. Down 17-0, no loss of composure, just slowly fought back. But you all have a veteran program, with lot’s of similar games and experience. That is to be expected from VT.

Taylor was incredible. Anyone else in there for you, and even with our problems today, we still win. Kudos to him. Awesome game.

Looks like Foster has gotten your D and those new starters back to playing VT defense. Too bad he didn’t need another game, or we didn’t catch you earlier in the season.

Unlike the Hokies, our team and program are young. I think we got hyped up with emotion, too much, too early… Today was a step for us. Hopefully we’ll use it to move forward.

    See you in Charlotte.

^^ Not anymore. GT storms back for the 24-20 win (actually 0:16 left but I’m assuming).

And even if GT had lost to Wake, that doesn’t mean our victory over them was any less of a quality win. We beat them in Atlanta at their place. We beat them thoroughly in just about every aspect of the game. They were/are the defending conference champs. If not for a few unforced errors we could have beaten them by 4 or 5 TD’s.

Why do so many seem to think our wins so far are so meaningless?

  7. Scooter 10/02/2010 at 10:19 PM #

What a disappointing loss. Our guys tried, but that was a flashback to 2009 — one half of brilliance, one half of atrocity. We have a young defense who have played bravely and an offense that played better than one could have expected over the last month… but what a way to let the air out of the bag.

I think the key for us is to stay behind the team at this point. Virginia Tech is a team better than their record and BC is a winnable game. If we can move to 5-1, I think we can resume the march.

As much as this loss hurts, I would rather have a chance to win rather than to get blown out like last year. RW can’t be perfect every game and he had a terrible game tonight making a few bad decisions. Let’s not give up on this team and continue to support them for a great season!!

    Go Wolfpack!!!

  9. bradleyb123 10/02/2010 at 10:36 PM #

We certainly could have cut out some mistakes. We didn’t play a particularly good game. But VT is no slouch, even if they lost one to JMU they should never have lost.

We had the lead with 4:42 remaining in the game. All we needed was one defensive stop, and we couldn’t get it. Russell did not shiit the bed by any stretch of the imagination. It was desperation mode and he was intercepted. End of story.

One close loss and this place goes nuts. Y’all need to relax. Seriously. We are FINE and I still like our chances to win the division, with or without winning today.

  10. bradleyb123 10/02/2010 at 10:40 PM #

    Russell had a terrible game???

He threw for over 360 yards and three scores. Yes, he threw some interceptions. But only one was truly his fault (the first one that cost us at least 3 points). The others came in desperation mode. And on one, I believe our receiver was interfered with, not that he would have caught it anyway.

VT is a good and dangerous team. They took away our passing game tonight and we couldn’t run as well as we needed to. And later in the game, their offensive line was pushing our D-line around like it was a high school team at times.

I really don’t get blaming Russell for this one.

  11. bradleyb123 10/02/2010 at 10:40 PM #

Hopefully the players stay away from this blog.

“Why do so many seem to think our wins so far are so meaningless?”

I think 20+ years of getting screwed by our own leadership and athletic administration have conditioned State fans to look for, and expect, the worst, while simultaneously belittling any level of success as an aberration or exaggeration .

  13. mak4dpak 10/02/2010 at 10:58 PM #

State’s run defense was bad today, with VT over 300 yards, and Russell needs to learn not to force things, we lost 7 points at the end of the first half, and gave away 7 at the end of the game. You can’t do these thngs and be a champion. We beat ourselves today. Let’s get it together, and win the division, then maybe we get another shot at VT, in Charlotte, for the ACC championship.

  14. doomsday2008 10/02/2010 at 11:18 PM #

We Killed ourselves PERIOD…. Hats off to VA TECH for capitalizing on our mental errors. PENALTIES, PENALTIES, PENALTIES.

It is almost like a batter up at the plate and it’s his 4th at bat against this pitcher knowing what to expect. That is what I saw Va TECH do to us today. They made adjustments and we seem to play the same way, and even saying all that we still should have won the game if it wasn’t for the PENALTIES. It was not about how many but, when they occurred

  15. tractor57 10/03/2010 at 1:00 AM #

Before this game (where VT played well BRW) we had discussed the concept of games getting tougher and games where our team wasn’t on for whatever reason. We can all sit here and find shortcomings from this game and we can also find examples where VT adapted to what we were doing. I’m not throwing in the towel with the loss of one hard fought game.

Today VT played better for 4 quarters – the Pack played much better than in the losses from last year. Enough better? Obviously not in this game. Monday starts the preparation for the next game.

A tip of the hat to the VT team and coaches.

  16. DaWolfofGC 10/03/2010 at 1:49 AM #

Don’t forget guys, we have 2 very winnable games(BC,ECU) up next. We could/should be 6-1 going into the Clemson/FSU gauntlet. For those 2 games our coaches will have 10+ days to prepare for each opponent and the extra rest will be good for the players. After that we have Wake, UNC and Maryland. We can win all 3. 9-3 this year seems to be in reach.

  17. chickenchan 10/03/2010 at 1:59 AM #

This made me lol…”and Russell needs to learn not to force things”. He’s far and away the best decision making qb State has had since I’ve been a fan, and that’s more years than I wish to remember.
I came here to vent but now the anger has subsided, thanks to the booze prolly. I didn’t read all the comments but did anyone mention why in the hell we’re running a no huddle offense up 17 points? We were snapping the ball w/ 20 seconds left on the playclock in a game that you knew was going to come down to the 4th quarter. Our mistakes on the field don’t baffle me anymore, but I thought the coaching staff would understand that time of possession would be critical to a team that hasn’t learned yet how to land the knock out punch when they have their opponents on the ropes.

  18. mak4dpak 10/03/2010 at 6:53 AM #

Russell is a great quarterback, but the difference in the GT game, and the VT, for him, was he did not spread the passes around, how many recievers caught passes last week, compared to yesterday. I only saw one pass to our TE, Bryan. If we are to be successful, RW, must keep spreading the passes around, every game. I am not throwing in the towel, and we can still win out, and get another crack at VT, or whoever wins the other division. Our coaches do need to make adjustments, when the opponent had made adjustments, because doing the same won’t work, as in this game. Maybe the guys were a little inflated with the record, and all the talk, but that is over, so time to start another streak, starting with BC. It is possible.

  19. tuckerdorm1983 10/03/2010 at 7:23 AM #

we are good but not great. better than last year. There is one good thing about all this. I was upset this year because I have an obligation of the night of Dec 4 (the acc championship game). I am not that worried about it now. I really don’t want to watch Miami or VT play FSU or Clemson in that game

  20. Plz2BStateFan 10/03/2010 at 7:48 AM #

Hopefully the team can focus on BC. We can still be 6-1 at the bi-week

  21. tuckerdorm1983 10/03/2010 at 7:51 AM #

plz2b that is right. I see us winning both ECU and BC game making us 6-1 and I think we have two more losses. FSU and CL. making us 9-3 which ain’t too shabby

  22. ROBO-PACK 10/03/2010 at 7:55 AM #

Whats disappointing to me is that VT controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. VT was more physical than State today period. That is why State lost today gentlemen. Our offensive line play put way to much pressure on Russell. He was rushed today, hence he was not able check the ball down and spread it around through his progressions. That had a lot to do with the bad decisions passing. Our defensive front got pushed around and put way to much pressure on our secondary which in turn exposed our youth and poor tackling back there. Yes, States secondary is still a weakness. Improved yes, but still a weakness. Both our first string corners are out with injury, and we have a true freshman playing safety alongside Brandon Bishop.

For State to regain its form of the first 4 games we must force our will at the line of scrimmage. This masks our weakness on D, and gives our O time to click. That is the formula folks. Get back to work Pack, and get better! Hats off to VT they deserve the credit for this one…

  23. wolfonthehill 10/03/2010 at 8:55 AM #

Guys, there are lots of teams left that can absolutely manhandle our defensive line… let’s hold off on the 9-3 talk until we show that we can get that house back in order. I’d be thrilled to beat BC by 1 at home next week…
