O’Brien v. Lowe

Maybe it’s unfair, but I have routinely compared Sidney Lowe’s performance with Tom O’Brien’s performance, at least within my circle of Wolfpack faithful. The debate can often become colorful and I usually, and admittedly, find myself on the outside looking in on the popular response. Now that we’re more than a few years in to both coaches tenure, it’s time to ask the question. Who has the highest threshold for success between the two?

A little (painful) history:

Since 2007, Tom O’Brien has posted an overall record of 16 and 21 (.432) with records of 5 – 7, 6 – 7, and 5 – 7.

Since 2007, Sidney Lowe has posted an overall record of 71 and 62 (.533) with records of 20 – 16, 15 -16, 16 – 14, and 20 – 16.

Both coaches currently maintain abysmal ACC records at 9 – 15 (.375) and 20 – 44 (.313) respectively.

As Wolfpack fans, we all know how to “wait till next year” and now that “next year” is upon us, who has the highest threshold for success between the two coaches? I think most even-headed Wolfpack fans will freely admit that this question is a no contest, at least for this year. Sidney Lowe certainly has the highest demand for success as he has reached his 5th season that many are calling “do or die.” With the incoming recruits, a sub .500 ACC record will be simply inexcusable for most.

This year for Football looks dreadfully similar to each of the 3 prior seasons. Ho hum. Not much going on. We get a few playmakers back (RW and NI), but the defense looks anemic as does the runningback position.

Negating everything else, if you had to throw your confidence behind one OR the other, who would you take? Tom O’Brien certainly has a history of winning at programs that don’t see much of that, but recruiting seems to be lagging and the TOB coached NC State teams look drastically different from the TOB coached Boston College teams. Defense has been a problem from Day 1 and not much has changed in that area.

Sidney has no history of winning as a head coach and hasn’t established a blazing record here either. Last year saw marked improvements, especially down the stretch, and it’s hard to complain with the inroads that have been made with recruiting. The incoming 2010-2011 class may be the best recruiting class in NC State’s history. We certainly don’t want to count chickens before they hatch…

Personally, I take Lowe. I see improvement, albeit slow, and an ability to land key recruits. I’ve seen stagnation with O’Brien. But if Tom does know how to do one thing, it’s own the hell out of Carolina.

And admittedly, this is an unpopular response with my fellow Wolfpackers. I wanted to raise the question outside of my intimate circle and see if I truly am crazy.

Who would you take and why?

But you question Sid’s ability to coach, while giving TOB a pass.

Very few people give TOB a complete pass. However, there are some that recognize that TOB has won at this level and hope that he can in Raleigh as well.

In contrast, Sid (the coach) hasn’t won at any level. In addition, Sid has been in Raleigh longer than TOB and is coaching a sport where it is quicker and easier to turn around a losing program.

Va Wolf 82, I just have to defend Lowe mainly because he is 1 of us and a personal friend since our days at State together. But lets not forget that our beloved wolf pack basketball teams hasn’t won a ACC title since 89. Oh, i forgot the only things matter to you guys is just making it to the big dance. Well believe it or not State is better than that. So lets get into your nonsense talking points.

    1. You’re right that he hasn’t won anything as a coach. But who has won anything in the NBA at Minnesota and Cleveland ?

    2. He inherited a team of players with skills that was well below the ACC standards.

Conrad, My points were directed specifically at bradley’s claim, not as an all-encompassing evaluation of Sidney.

Irrelevant to the point I was making. Neither coach has produced a winner since coming to NC State. In both cases, they haven’t had the talent to compete. But that’s only a valid excuse for TOB, but not Sid. THAT is my point. And it’s not fair to Sid.

And Sid is closer to having a winner than TOB, which is the most important thing to keep in mind. But some people still think TOB is the better coach. Truth is stranger than fiction.

I like them both. I want them both to succeed. But if we lost Sid right now, it would be more devastating than if we lost TOB. The way TOB is recruiting, he may actually need to go before his lack of recruiting makes the cupboard bare. As far as I’m concerned, TOB has this year to either win OR get recruiting right. Neither of those is looking good. I hope I’m wrong on that.

And your point still falls short because basketball is much easier to turn around than football AND Sidney has been in Raleigh longer.

No, that only indicates it took Sidney LONGER to get there. Our basketball program was more of a joke than our football team, so it makes sense that it might take longer. And you disregard Sidney’s first year that his recruiting was hamstrung by (1) him coming from the NBA to the college ranks and having no recruiting relationships whatsoever, and (2) him coming to State so late in the recruiting game. And yet, he still managed to pull in a pretty great recruit.

But whatever the case, Sidney has righted the ship now. Meanwhile, TOB’s recruiting is in the toilet at this point. I hope he turns it around, but that’s where it is currently.

If we had to unload a coach, I’m picking TOB before Sidney. THAT’S my point, and it is the answer to this blog. The blog didn’t ask who had more work to do, or who pulled the best recruits first.
