Carolina’s Own BobLee: “Did Carolina Marry a Stripper?”

In an absolutely fantastic analogy and put in a way that only BobLee can, his August 19 column hits the nail square on the head. I love this so much because it’s not coming from an excitable State fan or a joyous Duke fan, it’s coming from the tried and true and the bluest of the blue. BobLee equates Butch Davis to a stripper… except I don’t know a single stripper that has managed to screw an entire institution. Not even Crystal Mangum could manage that.

If a regular guy “marries a stripper”, his buddies and his buddies’ buddies will all be talking about it.  Like Jack / Jackee the cross-dresser at Blondie’s reunion, “the guy that marries a stripper” and “the stripper” are gonna be topics of conversation. LOTS of conversation.

To his face the comments will range from “Dude, you rock” to “You dawg” to “Excuse me, its none of my business but I gots to know …..”.   Behind his back, at the barber shop and over the back fence the chatter will be different ….. “what was he thinking, SHE’S A STRIPPER!” ….. “date one maybe but who actually marries one” …. “he’s the last guy I’d ever think would marry a stripper”.

continued…

Four years ago Carolina married a stripper – named Butch.

There was the “Dude, you ROCK!” congrats and the murmured “Doesn’t he know?  Should we tell him?”  “No, besides, maybe the stripper is not doing IT any more.” Yeah, right.

Is getting buck nekkid to titillate a roomful of losers with cheap haircuts and a sizable number of local elected officials analogous to flimflamming overly aggressive young men with a penchant for inflicting legalized mayhem and way below-average reading comprehension?

Is being the headliner at a nudie bar out on the bypass really similar to being the long awaited messiah who will lead us to BCS glory? In either case it’s just a masturbatory fantasy for the audience and a pile of empty liquor bottles for someone to clean up….

Head on over to BobLee Says for a look at this column which got some national exposure.

We can add BobLee to my list of favorite Carolina people and things that have made this sports off season by far my favorite in memory. In no particular order:

  • Marvin Austin
  • Greg Little
  • Butch’s Nanny
  • Carolina’s “capacity” crowd.
  • Kentwan Balmer
  • Twitter, thank God for Twitter
  • This Guy
  • Greg Little’s Dad
  • That billboard between Mebane and Raleigh advertising the coming football season. So funny who they chose to spotlight in that billboard and the fact that it still hasn’t been taken down.
  • Gucci cards
  • We can’t forget the investigator for the NCAA
  • Butch’s nice watch!
  • Some “premium $40/dozen” cupcakes
  • The results of all of them cupcakes
  • And finally, Bob Lee.

THIS IS THE SUMMER OF STATEFAN!

(this is a reference to the summer of George from Seinfeld. deal with it)

I love the Seinfeld reference…lets hope it doesn’t end the same way. I would love to see State take all the positives that has ocurred since April & put together the best Sports year in a long time. It starts with football…next Saturday. Go Pack

Marvin Austin = Nappy Headed Ho

    Ho Ho Ho

    Or however you spell it!

Can you see Marvin as a “pole dancer” and Butch as his pimp?

BobLee has been all over Butch for a long time…even before he held the school hostage for a pay raise after a four win season.

You guys amaze me. The bottom line is he’s cute, he’s witty, but at the end of the day he’s a hole.

Exchanged a couple emails with him like I do from time to time and 30 days ago BLS was telling me that Austin & Little would sit out a game and that would be it.
I would post it but I deleated it out of my mailbox.

BLS thinks xarolina> that whoever, especially State and he’s>you.
Doesn’t mean he doesn’t make some entertaining points but boys, don’t get suxed in by the ‘dark side’.

  7. rky 08/28/2010 at 12:19 PM #

Could not agree with you more, GC! I would say he’s sometimes cute, occasionally witty and clearly always a hole. I think the interest some have with his blog is that he will actually come out and say something negative about EweNC. Quite the oddity for the Powder Blues.

    “Did Carolina Marry a Stripper?”

I think a more appropriate question would be:

“Did Carolina marry a diseased prostitute?”

Marrying this analogy with the one about laying down with dogs… well, you get something a little worse than fleas.

Regarding Bob Lee, in all of his ‘cuteness’ and funny stories still lies the smug underlying tone of arrogance and superiority… Hell, his words drip with it.

He knows better than you, he is smarter than you, he IS better than you.

He’s one of those types that thinks the very act of bashing his own proves he is superior. He does it to elevate himself, pure and simple.

Something of the ‘Maverick’ syndrome of the John McCain of old, before he had to make a hard right turn to win his primary.

That doesn’t mean he’s not entertaining or a good read. He does have talent.

I like this quote from his most recent column:

“Q: Is there anything else to particularly avoid?
A: I would not watch Mythbusters. Just the title of the show is too painful right now. Their current show is on “elite academic institutions and the people who rely on them for their self-image”. In the final segment Jamie (the guy in the beret) sets himself on fire and dives under a bus screaming “I married a FREAKIN’ Stripper. WHAT was I thinking?” ….. I would avoid Mythbusters. “

BobLee is well worth reading – warts and all.

I was at a meeting last night – Two of us State alums, one from WF (his wife is a former UNC scholarship athlete and his son a UNC grad) and some others.

We all agreed in the end we hate this situation – true Butch will bake in his crap and beyond the usual UNX arrogance this is a total affront to college football – period.

Better UNX than State but …

  11. highstick 08/28/2010 at 2:31 PM #

But???? I hate it for the entire university system, but they have been “asking for it” over there for a long time! This is not an isolated set of instances!

Butch isn’t the first person to skirt the rules at UNC-CHeat. He just got caught.

Folks, I have a LOT of good friends that are Tar Heel Fans. I do NOT try to convert them every time we meet. We kid and have a good time. Bob Lee is really a down to earth guy…not your typical UNC aloof, fanatical fan (God forbid that we, the WPN would have any of those…).

His columns are great. I corresponded with him back in 2007 about a hilarious situation where the UNC BB broadcast crew was “live” on the arena FM for the ACC Tourney. Those boys were a hoot…given that Sid was running the table and their commentary….that was the BEST tourney that I have attended and the most memorable…so far.

I have also figured out WHY Butch looked so forlorn…the N&O photographer should get a Peabody or some such award (maybe a NOBEL prize since the requirements for it seem to be lowered thses days). The photos on the web site and the ones in the paper yesterday were priceless…

Back to Butch… there is going to be UNC Press Release….

Bob Timberlake, who did the famous Iron Eyes Cody prints (the Indian with the tear in his eye series….Clean Up America Campaign…postage stamp, etc. is ALSO a UNC Alumnus. Doesn’t stop my wife from buying his prints and I like some of them.

Bob has planned a sequel to the Iron Eyes prints and planned on using Butch as the subject. Butch had been practicing his “dejected, lost, forlorn, etc.” poses. He was JUST getting into character when TermPaperGate or NannyGate or TutorGate errupted. SO, he was actually “emoting” and the look on his face had NOTHING to do with the current mess.

FOOTNOTE….Iron Eyes Cody was ACTUALLY NOT a Native American. It was a HOAX. Iron Eyes Cody’s parents were Sicilian immigrants….as he was cast into Native American roles, they kept changing his bibliography….so it seems ironic that Bob Timberlake would choose Butch for his subject…as Butch’s bibliography also is questionable and keeps changing…

In addition, Bob Lee is funny!

I still want to know the official reason why Swofford has been so quiet lately (we all know the REAL reason) but it is extremely interesting that the commissioner of the ACC, who about a month ago said he would get to the bottom of the investigation, has apparanatly taken a leave of abscence from his job to wash his hands of this scandal.

  15. ADVENTUROO 08/28/2010 at 10:02 PM #

I suspect that both Roy Williams and John Swofford have taken up residence in Dick Cheney’s “undisclosed location”. Their whereabouts is probably more top secret than where they hid Marvin’s cell phone….

YOU GOTTA KNOW that Roy don’t want NO QUESTIONS asked about his boys….

Remember when Mikey K. pulled a disappearing act during the Dook LaCrosse “incident”.

Can’t say that I blame them…..if I was in their shoes and probably know what they know….a reporter or an NCAA investigator would be the LAST person I would want a voice mail from…..they would probably welcome an IRS auditor if he would give them an excuse NOT to have to “meet the press”. Where is Mike Wallace and his camera when we need them…

Will SOMEBODY PLEASE call Peter Golenbach…..I smell a sequel here….

  16. GoldenChain 08/29/2010 at 7:40 AM #

“We all agreed in the end we hate this situation…”

?!? I’m totally not understanding. I LOVE EVERY SECOND OF THIS SITUATION!!!!!
What is ‘a shame’ is that out of control boosters, coaches, administrators, agents, and others have allowed, no, amateur athletics to be ruined for those of us that like the pure form of it.

I have a suggestion: why doesn’t ESPN STOP doing press conferences for self indulgent narcissistic 17yos when they announce whose money they are going to take (aka Barnes?!).

  17. tractor57 08/29/2010 at 6:01 PM #

Yes we all agreed we hate the situation – I agree all the out of control aspects are deplorable (and yes I have taken some joy in the plight of our light blue clad brethren) but in the end these episodes serve to tarnish all collegiate sports.
