PackInsider: 2011 NC State Basketball Recruit Profiles

With the confirmed assimilation of one of the best basketball recruiting classes in school history coming on the back of the announcement of Lee Fowler’s imminent departure, perhaps NC State is experiencing some of that “hope and change” that Barack Obama talked so much about in 2008?

As you know, we don’t go too far overboard on SFN for recruiting. Most of us have been around long enough to have experienced far too many ‘saviors’ turn out to be busts (or transfers) and far too many unknowns turn out to be all-conference performers. But, with NC State’s current “hope and change” mode we thought we would keep looking ahead and link to some nifty profiles of some 2011 prospects that are expressing interest the Wolfpack.

(Note: the names on the list include 6’5 combo Larry Bradley, who was the top sophomore in Wisconsin two years ago. But, his current classification does not necessarily mean he will be a 2011 prospect. We’ll keep our eye on this as I think the Pack could be sitting strong with him)

The Wolfpack’s 2011 class will be very hard pressed to compete with this year’s signees that included the ‘benefit’ of Lorenzo Brown failing to qualify in 2009. But, with 6’9, 225 lb. Joseph Uchebo (link to some good threads) already in the fold the Wolfpack has a very solid commitment around which to build.

If Coach Lowe can follow up this most recent class with some of the names on this list then maybe we can finally see some consistent success and opportunity for big things from the NC State Basketball program. We don’t ever want to fall prey to the over-hyping of other websites, but we don’t want to fly blind ignoring what may come together for the Pack.

Thanks for posting this – good info.

We need at least one guard in this class – it looks like we’re recruiting several.

You got some clueless NC State journalists if they think the Wolfpack will touch a criminal like Larry Bradley. Be a sad day if he’s representing the school.

From a story I just read:

Wauwatosa East High School athletes Larry Bradley and Barett Powell and Milwaukee Vincent High School athlete Dezmond Gosa were each charged in Milwaukee County Children’s Court on May 6 with two counts of attempted armed robbery and one count of false imprisonment.

The charges came after the three 16-year-old boys were arrested for invading the home of an alleged drug dealer and his mother in the 6100 block of Martin Road on May 1.

According to Wauwatosa Police Department reports:

Powell was packing for the trip to Indiana, where the boys were going to play in a basketball tournament, when Bradley called several times and asked to borrow a BB gun. Bradley said he was looking to get some money that was owed to him and told Powell if he brought his ski mask he would get paid to serve as a lookout.

Bradley also called Gosa and asked if he wanted to be part of the plan.

All three entered the house, which they said they had been to before, pointed the gun at the residents and demanded the son give them money, which they said they knew he had from selling marijuana. He denied having money, so his panicked mother said she would take them to a bank and get cash.

Bradley and Gosa left with the mother, while Powell stayed behind and unveiled his face to the son, who said he would get in trouble for having marijuana at his home. The two tried to hide the son’s drugs before Powell went into the basement to hide.

Meanwhile, the mother and two teens arrived at Metcalf’s Sentry Foods on State Street, where Guaranty Bank is located. They allowed her to go into the store alone, where she called police and said her son was being held against his will. When the boys in the car heard sirens, they ran to the nearby UPS Store, where they were apprehended.

When officers responded to the house, they ordered Powell to come out. He was arrested in the front yard of the residence. He immediately started crying and said his life was over because he was supposed to attend college on an athletic scholarship, which would likely be taken away.

Bradley, who received statewide acclaim for his basketball talent, played guard for the Red Raiders. His time playing for Wauwatosa East was marked by controversy over his eligibility after he moved in with his uncle, for tardiness to games and poor sportsmanship. He quit while the team was in the sectional semi-final and finals.

Based on scholarship spacing, I kinda hope that we are looking for some JUCO players to help stem the tide of the consistent grouping of 4 to 5 scholarships we seem to have available for incoming freshmen every year.

Statefans: can you explain how we have large groups of scholarships available every year? Wouldnt this be every other year or every fourth year if we’re recruiting in large classes once and a while? Obviously the nothing class after Herb left and Hickson and some transfers have led to some large classes, but wouldnt you think this would naturally start to fix itself over time assuming Sid remains our coach. Even with early departures the classes should start to level out. Maybe I’m missing the obvious and misunderstand the point.

^ How about the two early transfers this summer in which many irrationally justified.

Was gonna post that I am very dubious of Larry Bradley attending an ACC school (despite having the NCSU connection via his new coach), but see some one has already made that observation.

What interests me is that there are several PGs on that list. With Harrow and Brown on the roster, it doesn’t seem that PG would be a huge concern (though I think Quinn Cook is the kind of talent you take anyway), but maybe Lowe doesn’t see Brown as a PG? Or is there concern about Harrow and/or Brown having early pro potential (well concern and hope, I guess you could say)?

Everything hinges on achieving something this season with this year’s stellar crop of freshmen, of course. A new AD will be running things and his/her first task will be rebuilding the basketball program if … what? If State misses the NCAAs? Not sure what the bar will be, but gotta think it will be one of the first things established by the new AD.

Aside from the obvious need to win more consistently, it will help if the new crew establishes some sort of identity for State basketball this season — a style of offense, maybe just a sense of free-wheeling fun, something that other kids can identify with playing for Lowe and State and say “I want to be a part of THAT [style/system/whathaveyou].”

That said, if the expected success (or better) occurs this season, then Lowe certainly does seem to have elevated the foundation of State’s recruiting efforts for the future …

Even with both we do not have a third guard. However, in the past Lowe has not had players play multiple positions. I would prefer a three guard line up but he always seems to bring in two guards not one.

    Rick,
I think Brown will be a SG on this squad.

I was just looking at Rivals and they have Marshall Plumlee listing NC State. Does anyone know if that is true, I thought he was locked in with Duke since his brothers go there. It would liven up the rivalry though if he did go to State and put our front court on another level when Tracy Smith leaves.

It might not happen but to follow up the 2010 class with Quinn Cook, Tyler Harris, Joseph Uchebo, and Larry Bradley would be great. It would probably take a class like that thought to maintain success in the ACC. I highly doubt Plumlee would come to state too but if he did we’d have some nice talent with the 2010 class even after CJ Leslie leaves for the NBA.
