Debbie Yow to be named NC State AD Friday

10:00 PM UPDATE

WRAL is now confirming that Debbie Yow will become NC State’s next AD.

ORIGINAL POST

About four hours ago we hit our message forums and Twitter account guiding you that something was breaking in the search for NC State’s Athletics Director.

Around 8:25 pm this evening, the N&O’s Joe Giglio posted a blog entry titled, N.C. State AD search closes in on Maryland’s Yow

Maryland’s Debbie Yow has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Lee Fowler as N.C. State’s athletic director.

The Terrapins have won 17 national titles in Yow’s 16-year tenure at the ACC school, including one in men’s basketball (2002) and women’s basketball (2006).

Yow confirmed Thursday night that she has been contacted by N.C. State.

“N.C. State has expressed interest in me, yes, but at this time that’s all I can say,” Yow said. “It’s flattering that they have interest.”

Yow’s late sister, Kay, was the legendary women’s basketball coach at N.C. State.

Also this evening, “InsideMDSports.com” has taken the news a few steps further reporting that Yow is expected to take the NC State AD Job.

University of Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow will be introduced shortly as the new A.D. at North Carolina State, multiple sources have told InsideMDSports.com.

N.C. State could officially announce the hire Friday. A source close to the Maryland athletic department said Yow told her staff she will be in North Carolina Friday for unspecified reasons, and a news conference at N.C. State could take place as soon as Friday afternoon.

Speaking to Terrapin Club members at Thursday night’s previously scheduled meeting, Yow did not confirm that she will take the N.C. State position, but a source said was emotional in her address.

Current N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler, who announced his resignation on May 4, will leave his post on June 30.

Yow interviewed at N.C. State two weeks ago, according to a source, but she denied doing so to The Baltimore Sun in a June 14 article.

“I have not interviewed with the N.C. State Search committee and, in the past, have likewise declined to be interviewed by other universities who have shown interest in me,” she told The Sun.

Yow, who took over the post in 1994, is in her 16th year at Maryland. Her tenure has been defined by widespread expansion and success of the athletic department and an emphasis on reducing past debt and maintaining a balanced budget.

But a recent high-profile spat with basketball coach Gary Williams and a failed attempt to buy out football coach Ralph Friedgen exacerbated tension between her, the school’s most powerful coaches and the Maryland fan base.

In her time at Maryland, the athletic department expanded to include 27 teams and became one of most successful in the ACC and the country, winning 20 national championships in six different sports since 1995.

Yow oversaw the building of the Comcast Center, which opened in 2002, and the expansion of Byrd Stadium’s Tyser Tower to include 64 suites, which was completed last year. Numerous other athletic facilities upgrades have been completed under her watch.

Her efforts in building up Maryland’s athletic department were overshadowed in recent years by often public riffs between the basketball program and the athletic department.

The tension came to a head in January of 2009, when a back-and-forth between Williams and associate athletic director Kathy Worthington spurned a media firestorm. Additionally, high-ranking boosters told InsideMDSports.com then that Yow contacted them in an effort to raise funds for a buyout of Williams. Yow denied the report.

Yow’s current contract at Maryland, last amended Jan, 17, 2007, expires Aug. 31, 2013.

Early indication, according to a source, is that Connecticut athletic director Jeff Hathaway, who graduated from Maryland in 1981 and received a Master’s from the school in 1991, would be a prime target. It is too early, however, to determine Maryland’s course of action, as it has yet to name a replacement for outgoing school president Dan Mote, who retires effective Aug. 31.

“Yow is someone who has been running her own program that has absolutely nothing to do with NC State or the good ol’ boy network for 16 years.”

Who really knows. I’m certain she and her sister had many conversations about NCSU, and she comes into her job already with some opinions in place. Furthermore, having been Maryland’s AD, she has to be familiar with some of the happenings at NCSU. It’s a close-knit group, word travels, and she’s got to have some friends within the department.

I was also one that thought Purcell should have been given a look, but probably not the job given his ties/relationships witin the university. So you can count me out of the whole Purcell cheerleading camp.

What we need is someone with experience that can objectively evaluate the entire program, and make the hard and fast decisions. She has great experience for sure, but I am not so certain about her ability to be objective here. Seems like a very safe hire indeed, and although she had a good tenure at Maryland, I never once looked up to them as the gold standard in the ACC. I don’t think many others did, either.

And saying she’s an upgrade over Fowler is a little like saying that Heinken is a better beer than Old Milwaukee. Nearly anyone would have been, so let’s not let that dominate the conversation here. Of course she is better, but that shouldn’t have been the committee’s goal. We need a home run in a very big way.

I’m as much of a cyinc when it comes to NC State athletics as anyone on this board. However, I’ve read most of the comments, and so far, I have yet to hear a valid argument about why Yow is not a good hire. Some connections to the university, her last name, hiring from another ACC school, some Maryland fans being happy to see her go, and not giving the job to Purcell are the main arguments against this hire.

So far, nobody has pointed out one shred of evidence that empirically shows that she will not do a good job.

On the other hand, she has a resume of success. A top 10 athletics program, 27th in Dirctor’s Cup standings, many national championships, building facilities, balancing budgets/smart money management, and being very familiar with the workings within the ACC are all solid accomplishments that we should hope an AD would have.

    So what’s the problem, really?

Most people on this forum have no real idea of the day-to-day operations of an AD (other than what they read on message boards), what they have to deal with, and what actions they really take behind closed doors to get things done. Therefore, I don’t see how the majority of us can actually determine whether she will be successful or not.

The only logical course of action here is to support the decision and give her a chance. Let’s start off on the right foot by doing that.

  3. old13 06/25/2010 at 9:49 AM #

Her NATIONAL reputation, from what I’ve read, is that she is one of the best current ADs in the country. Why is that not a positive for a floudering department like ours! Dr. Woodson has always stated that AD experience is a priority for him in this hire. And with all due respect to Bobby, his resume pales in comparison to Debbie’s re: the AD position.

  4. newt 06/25/2010 at 9:50 AM #

She has a lot of accomplishments on paper – winning NCs and balancing the budget.

She apparently tried to remove both Fridge and Williams, but wasn’t able to in either case, and the discussion about Williams has polarized Maryland fans. You can view that situation in both a positive and negative light. Both coaches have had significant past success and yet were feeling heat for their recent performance, so that says something.

Her dept. has shown exceptional success in non-revenue sports, and one of the last things she did was hire the men’s lacrosse coach away from Harvard.

My biggest worry is that she or her department has publicly exchanged barbs with radio personalities, coaches, and “the fans” over rumors, etc., which was my main gripe with Fowler. I don’t find a bunch of quotes from her that make me say “Wow, Maryland’s a great place,” and I think NC State could use that type of person, the type of person Kelly Harper described. We’ll see how they come across at the presser.

Since posting above, I have seem some comments from her that would inspire enthusiasm for the program (e.g. no reason we should settle for being less than the best).

So I don’t question that she’s up for the job, but hope she is able to rebuild our image and esteem.

  5. MA Wolfpack 06/25/2010 at 10:02 AM #

Count me as one of the people pleased with this hire. She has extensive experience running a “better” athletic program than NC State while in the ACC.

I really like Purcell, but he would have been a terrible hire for this position. If he wants to leave to take an AD job elsewhere, then I wish him well. With that said, the “fear” of him leaving should never have been relevant in this search. I hope he continues to run the Wolfpack Club, but if he wants more than that, then he should go elsewhere and we’ll move on.

What I thought was going to be a good day has turned into a sad day.

  7. WolfWall.com 06/25/2010 at 10:30 AM #

^ Wow really? You probably know absolutely nothing about the lady other than what you have read here, give her a chance and/or grow up.

  8. Sam92 06/25/2010 at 10:34 AM #

it’s true there’s doubt here – but i’m prepared to give debbie yow the benefit of that doubt

her record at maryland actually seems pretty good. maryland football is not that great — but maryland has never been a football school. maryland basketball hasn’t been great lately, but they have won a national championship just a few years ago, and the record for nonrevenue sports seems pretty good

i really don’t see cause for pessimism here

I am more interested in any information that starts coming our about the decision process.

As long as this decision was made on the up and up I am fine with it until there is evidence otherwise.

  10. Oldwolf 06/25/2010 at 10:50 AM #

while this has taken me by surprise, seeing her resume I am willing to give her a chance. If the Directors Cup is a good measure of how well a program is doing (with regards to winning), then Maryland has been doing much better under Yow that we have:

    09-10 — 27 vs 95
    08-09 — 29 vs 74
    07-08 — 52 vs 56
    06-07 — 40 vs 44
    05-06 — 27 vs 34
    04-05 — 28 vs 51

ps – just got an email from Wolfpack Club that Woodson is announcing new AD this afternoon at 2:00

  11. WTNY 06/25/2010 at 10:54 AM #

It appears that some of the drama is coming from the Purcell-or-else group. Makes me think that Purcell would have been a different flavor of the good ‘ole boy network.

I want the best for NC State. At 1st blush, Yow doesn’t seem like a great hire. However, I’m willing to give her a chance.

  12. NOT A FAN OF BLUE 06/25/2010 at 11:03 AM #

Based on the things I’m hearing, I think this is a great hire.
    1) On paper, this is an upgrade
    2) After hearing David Glenn’s take this morning …
    http://www.accsports.com/files/David%20Glenn_25-Jun-10_re%20Debbie%20Yow%20hire.mp3
… I am optimistic (and believe me, I do not drink the DG kool-aid everyone else seems to drink around here, but in this case, he has an expert opinion
    3) She’s a winner … her resume points to promotion and success
    4) Her peers have a high regard for her
    5) She sounds like an ass-kicker, and around here, the list of asses that need to be kicked is long (and undistinguished). This, my friends, is just what the doctor ordered.
I dont want a politician, or another “good ol’ boy”, I want someone to hold people accountable. Perform – or hit the road.
However, Murphy’s Law originated – and was perfected to a fine art – at STATE; so who knows what will happen.
Maybe after a 350 percent increase in donations and our 20th National title in 6 different sports, I will begin to, once again, look for someone better qualified. Until then, I am willing to get behind her.

  13. newt 06/25/2010 at 11:07 AM #

WTNY – I’ve started to wonder the same thing regarding the good ol’ boy network – The new regime is definitely pissing off some people who didn’t get their way.

  14. Alpha Wolf 06/25/2010 at 11:43 AM #

It’s my understanding that Yow wanted to make changes in the football program, but was stopped by the reality of contract issues. The situation was once described to me as though Amato had a multimillion dollar payout here, and whether we would have realistically been able to make a change.

I’m not particularly enthused by Yow, but then again, I think we could have done worse too. Then again, whether it is a true upgrade is something that remains to be seen.

I also wonder if Yow would have hired Stephanie Glance or not.

All I know is that it seems we are establishing a pattern of taking other ACC schools’ castoffs. First TOB, now Yow. If State makes a hoops coach change, will we hire Dino Gaudio to take over?

  15. Alpha Wolf 06/25/2010 at 11:47 AM #

Some good reading for you boys:

    http://www.umterps.com/school-bio/md-athdir.html

Yow is known for her goal-oriented and proactive management style. She consistently inspires and challenges those around her to “raise our sights and sharpen our tools… to work hard and work smart… to recognize that our only limitations are those that we place upon ourselves.”

Dr. Yow is known as “a coach’s A.D.,” while also being highly organized and a strategic and proactive leader and administrator. Quite simply, Debbie Yow personifies the relational and management dynamics that are necessary to be an excellent administrator and leader.

  16. wolfbuff 06/25/2010 at 11:57 AM #

Thank you, Alpha Wolf. I don’t pretend to know the ins and outs of an AD, but DY’s results speak for themselves. After all, that’s why we didn’t like Fowler, right? So you can’t have it both ways. She’s a good hire and may turn out to be great. We can’t judge until she’s had time to come in and put her stamp on the program. So, we all need to put our Red on and support the decision, DY, and the chancellor. Talk to me in 5 years if you still feel the same way. Time to move on.

  17. OviesHatesYourPosse 06/25/2010 at 12:04 PM #

Actually Alpha, it has to be a current coach and not a fired one for that to work. So State would hire away somebody like Frank Haith (which some people wanted after Herb) or better, Paul Hewitt.

  18. CStanley 06/25/2010 at 12:05 PM #

I’m not overly excited about the hire, and while I typically view strong female personality types as unfavorable, I think she could be just what this athletic department needs. She sounds like she doesn’t put up with mediocrity, inefficiency, and the status quo. Our department is in bad need of an enema, so this could be really good.

We may find out sooner than later. TOB is under close watch this fall.

  19. bluelena69 06/25/2010 at 12:09 PM #

I am just tickled pink that she promotes the importance of running a Goals-based organization. At first, I was unsure of this because, honestly, I don’t have the time to keep up with the AD-scene, but I looked at her body of work and its clear that we could not have made a better hire.

This is not nepotism or good-ol-boy crap like I see promoted by some here. This hire was made primarily by people who were not around when Kay Yow was here. Beside the point, she shares a last name with our dearly departed coach but she has a successful career that stands on its own as VERY impressive. Perhaps even more importantly, she is from NC, so she understands NC State–and she knows what it means for NC State to succeed. What do people want? God?

  20. hball57 06/25/2010 at 12:12 PM #

    Alpha:

The quote that is most important IMHO from that UM bio that should make State fans excited is this one:

Regarding the many achievements of Terrapin athletics over the past 15 years, Yow says, “We are pleased, but we are not satisfied… our vision is to be one of the Top 5 programs in the nation consistently… we see no reason to settle for less.”

    Isn’t that what we want?

  21. elvislives 06/25/2010 at 12:16 PM #

Anyone know how old Yow is? No age discrimination intended but this does not feel like a long-term solution. Maybe they wanted someone to “right the ship” for a few years and then have a hand in selecting a younger replacement?

  22. john of sparta 06/25/2010 at 12:16 PM #

it’s kinda good news and bad news….
good news: UM’s record looks better than ours.
bad news: the two UM alumni i know are so damn happy.

  23. VaWolf82 06/25/2010 at 12:18 PM #

Let’s make sure that we have cause/effect straight.

Coaches are hired to win and AD’s are hired to run the athletic department. The fact that UMd won 20+ championships is good, but doesn’t necessarily translate into anything that will happen at State because of hiring Yow.

Where you need to judge an AD is on the financial health of the athletic department and how coaches who ARE NOT winning are dealt with…in other words “MANAGEMENT”. This last part is one of many areas where LF fell woefully short of acceptable.

WRAL reports that the contract has been approved: http://www.wralsportsfan.com/ncsu/story/7850986/

OviesHatesYourPosse: Actually Alpha, it has to be a current coach and not a fired one for that to work. So State would hire away somebody like Frank Haith (which some people wanted after Herb) or better, Paul Hewitt.

Very good point. Hewitt would be the exact next step.

hball57: Yow says, “We are pleased, but we are not satisfied… our vision is to be one of the Top 5 programs in the nation consistently… we see no reason to settle for less.”

This is exactly what we need, IMO.

I have to say, when I heard about the impending hire yesterday up here in the Northwoods on Twitter, my first reaction was “damn, a legacy hire because of Kay Yow.” Then, after I got onto the Googles and did some real research into Dr. Yow’s accomplishments and her challenges, I have to say that what she has done impressed me.

I like her willingness to be an agent of change, which is something that we have all advocated for some time. She doesn’t accept mediocrity as the status quo, and I think we’ve all done plenty of grousing about that here on the revenue and non-revenue level. Yow doesn’t believe in it, and that’s a good thing.

I also like the fact that she has raised UMD’s profile, actually believes in media management and has managed to do her job without incurring a lot of debt. Quite the opposite, she’s paid debt off and kept the books balanced. Couple that with increasing success up there, and you have a good combo.

Again, regarding Coaches Willians and Friedgen, she was hamstrung by contracts, and it really doesn’t take too much searching to see that. I would think that Friedgen especially was on thin ice up there, and we will see if their next AD takes the logical move that Yow herself would have done perhaps as soon as after Thanksgiving of this year. Gary is a victim of Gary so far as I see – his recruiting methods have not worked lately, but he seems to be on the rebound up there, and perhaps he will have the Terps back in the upper part of the ACC in the next few years. We’ll see.

All in all, we got an experienced, competent and pro-active AD. Whether she can turn around the good ship Wolfpack remains to be seen, but her first task will be uniting the fanbase. It is as fractured as I have ever seen it, and reading Pack Pride this morning was nothing short of pitiful. Some of those folks need a life, stat. I can understand disappointment, even some resentment, but it was taken to a new level over there and it really makes me think some posters actually need therapy.

Yow is going to have to calm those waters, and as soon as possible. This fanbase has started to resemble HMS Bounty or the USS Caine. A house divided cannot stand.
