Debbie Yow to be named NC State AD Friday

10:00 PM UPDATE

WRAL is now confirming that Debbie Yow will become NC State’s next AD.

ORIGINAL POST

About four hours ago we hit our message forums and Twitter account guiding you that something was breaking in the search for NC State’s Athletics Director.

Around 8:25 pm this evening, the N&O’s Joe Giglio posted a blog entry titled, N.C. State AD search closes in on Maryland’s Yow

Maryland’s Debbie Yow has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Lee Fowler as N.C. State’s athletic director.

The Terrapins have won 17 national titles in Yow’s 16-year tenure at the ACC school, including one in men’s basketball (2002) and women’s basketball (2006).

Yow confirmed Thursday night that she has been contacted by N.C. State.

“N.C. State has expressed interest in me, yes, but at this time that’s all I can say,” Yow said. “It’s flattering that they have interest.”

Yow’s late sister, Kay, was the legendary women’s basketball coach at N.C. State.

Also this evening, “InsideMDSports.com” has taken the news a few steps further reporting that Yow is expected to take the NC State AD Job.

University of Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow will be introduced shortly as the new A.D. at North Carolina State, multiple sources have told InsideMDSports.com.

N.C. State could officially announce the hire Friday. A source close to the Maryland athletic department said Yow told her staff she will be in North Carolina Friday for unspecified reasons, and a news conference at N.C. State could take place as soon as Friday afternoon.

Speaking to Terrapin Club members at Thursday night’s previously scheduled meeting, Yow did not confirm that she will take the N.C. State position, but a source said was emotional in her address.

Current N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler, who announced his resignation on May 4, will leave his post on June 30.

Yow interviewed at N.C. State two weeks ago, according to a source, but she denied doing so to The Baltimore Sun in a June 14 article.

“I have not interviewed with the N.C. State Search committee and, in the past, have likewise declined to be interviewed by other universities who have shown interest in me,” she told The Sun.

Yow, who took over the post in 1994, is in her 16th year at Maryland. Her tenure has been defined by widespread expansion and success of the athletic department and an emphasis on reducing past debt and maintaining a balanced budget.

But a recent high-profile spat with basketball coach Gary Williams and a failed attempt to buy out football coach Ralph Friedgen exacerbated tension between her, the school’s most powerful coaches and the Maryland fan base.

In her time at Maryland, the athletic department expanded to include 27 teams and became one of most successful in the ACC and the country, winning 20 national championships in six different sports since 1995.

Yow oversaw the building of the Comcast Center, which opened in 2002, and the expansion of Byrd Stadium’s Tyser Tower to include 64 suites, which was completed last year. Numerous other athletic facilities upgrades have been completed under her watch.

Her efforts in building up Maryland’s athletic department were overshadowed in recent years by often public riffs between the basketball program and the athletic department.

The tension came to a head in January of 2009, when a back-and-forth between Williams and associate athletic director Kathy Worthington spurned a media firestorm. Additionally, high-ranking boosters told InsideMDSports.com then that Yow contacted them in an effort to raise funds for a buyout of Williams. Yow denied the report.

Yow’s current contract at Maryland, last amended Jan, 17, 2007, expires Aug. 31, 2013.

Early indication, according to a source, is that Connecticut athletic director Jeff Hathaway, who graduated from Maryland in 1981 and received a Master’s from the school in 1991, would be a prime target. It is too early, however, to determine Maryland’s course of action, as it has yet to name a replacement for outgoing school president Dan Mote, who retires effective Aug. 31.

Actually, this one might unify the fan base (in the same way Fowler did).

I’m kind of surprised Mary Easley didn’t make the final list.

There’s so much to say, but its too much to type. I hope we all eat our words by disagreeing with this hire, but being State fans, odds are not in our favor. Now we risk losing Bobby Purcell altogether and who can blame him for leaving if someone else offers him a job?? As loyal as he has been to us after we hired Lee Fowler over him and now we throw this in his face??? Unbelievable!!

  3. tractor57 06/24/2010 at 11:47 PM #

I’ll admit I’m not sure about the hire. However if the last name was not Yow I think a lot of concern would vanish.

Regardless I think the hire is a step forward. Now to get the pruning shears ready …

  4. ncsu_kappa 06/25/2010 at 12:35 AM #

Any last name other than Purcell would raise eyebrows… now we pick into the pocket of another ACC organization. This is disappointing at best and man do I hope 1. to eat my words 2. Bobby Purcell doesn’t leave. I for one couldn’t blame him if he did.

Reason’s this hire doesn’t make sense.
    1. He provides continuity with alumni
    2. He provides continuity with current coaching staff’s
    3. He has delivered a standard of excellence that far exceed’s NCST’s (just kidding NCSU’s) on field/court performance
    4. He has demonstrated Loyalty to NC State that has far exceeded what’s been shown to him
    5. While he doesn’t have “experience” as AD I would feel very confident about the direction of NC State’s athletic programs under his watch.

I can’t remember the exact situation, but I believe Yow was involved in a spat with some of the men coaches during the Valvano “scandal” of the early 90’s. She was in the State Athletics department back then and was extremely unpopular with some of the coaches. I hope I’m not spreading something incorrect, but I remember something along these lines and her departure from NCSU was a welcome relief.

I was really expecting a ‘fresh start’ and have someone from the private business world who had shown success with expansion. It also dissapoints me that we now have a pattern of choosing from other ACC schools. It seems we have a very narrow field of vision.
Let hope for the best, we are State fans so we have all been conditioned to be optomistic each season (only to have our hopes dashed).

I’m undecided about this hire. I see positives and *maybe* negatives. I do believe, however, that Purcell would have been a gamble just the same. He certainly maintains the status quo more than this hire. He more than likely would have done a great job as he’s done a phenomenal job with the WPC… simply phenomenal. But if shake up is what you guys wanted, I think this hire does that. What I do hate about it is that there are connections to the old regime in the Yow name. Therefore her assessment of the department is going to be unfortunately affected by her sister’s opinions and therefore not completely objective. And I’m not saying that’s a bad thing at all, it’s just a fact of the matter given the connections and high likelihood that two sisters discussed their jobs and those around them over Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners if not on a regular basis.

This is an odd hire, for sure. I cannot help but think we would have had the decency to speak with Maryland administrators and gain favor in the move before poaching yet another ACC school’s employee. Obviously TOB has proven to be a bit of an enigma with his transition and hopefully he will begin to show the success here that he obviously enjoyed at BC. I hope Yow’s transition is more smooth, but truthfully they are/were both dealing with a pretty bare cupboard upon arrival.

I wish her well and hope under her we can reach some previously untapped resources to enjoy some much-needed success on the fields, courts, mats and pools.

I will reserve comment on Yow’s qualifications because I know nothing about her except what I’ve seen here. I will say this seems to be an odd choice for a university that is trying to move forward.

My concern is how this choice could make Kellie Harper start looking. Harper has had a difficult job replacing a legend and now has the added pressure of having the legend’s sister as a boss.

  9. graywolf 06/25/2010 at 7:25 AM #

I had the same thought regarding Harper. It’s going to be difficult to replace the bosses sister.

  10. harrisek 06/25/2010 at 7:32 AM #

I was hoping for two things at a minimum in the new AD hiring, 1) no prior connections to NC State or the ACC so we could get a fresh perspective, and 2) a younger person (early 40’s) with new ideas and a better understanding of the modern age. No offense to Yow, but she doesn’t fit the first and probably not the second. No well, she’s got to be better than what we had.

  11. Pack1998 06/25/2010 at 7:38 AM #

Guys . . . It is an upgrade, and that my friends is pretty good.

If she had the courage to try to back door Gary Williams and Friegden, then she has what it takes to make people accountable.

Her success at UMd speaks for itself.

  12. klt1121 06/25/2010 at 7:40 AM #

Why are we not taking a wait and see approach here???

Everyone dumping on Yow before she even gets here seems greatly inappropriate. We’re starting to look like a lunatic fan base that’s impossible to please. Are we going to now build a reputation of running people off before they even get here??

  13. klt1121 06/25/2010 at 7:46 AM #

NCSU_Kappa, your first two reasons for wanting Purcell are continuity with the status quo. How is that positive? Seems like we would want a fresh look from the outside.

And your last reason is no experience as an AD. Even Purcell has to understand that he is not credentialed for the AD job. I don’t see how he could get mad and leave.

  14. Prowling Woofie 06/25/2010 at 7:50 AM #

    Agreed, Pack1998 –

Look at what we’re losing, and what we’re gaining. She’s proven to be 1) a solid administrator, 2) fiscally responsible, and 3) a winner.

    Give her a chance.

May not have the ‘WOW’ factor, but she’s definitely and upgrade on paper and in person.

  15. haze 06/25/2010 at 8:09 AM #

I guess I trust our internet community to a greater extent on coaches than on AD’s. As such, wait and see seems reasonable. Her record at MD was quite good and it doesn’t bother me a bit that the coaches don’t all like her. Coaches should be a little concerned about a results-oriented AD.

As for MD’s football program, it’s far out performed ours and from a lower starting point. Sure, Fridge has had some tough years and probably won’t last long now but he had huge success early (far beyond Amato, which buys time) and he is an alum (buys support). Not a quick fire by any means.

  16. wolfpack74 06/25/2010 at 8:23 AM #

This absolutely sucks! So what has changed, nothing! Great just like fowler, built fuhcilities! So what they won some titles in non-revenue sports. Big deal! Yes Gary Williams won a title on 2002 but what have they done since! Look at the football program! She couldn’t raise the money to get rid of the fridge and made the matter worse by agreeing to a coach in waiting who’s not helping the program (gets $1 million if not named head coach).
I’ve been putting up with this crap for 34 years and I have had enough. I stopped giving to the school a little while ago. There’s no hope, State is where people go to retire or hang out and build nice pensions!
I am done because even if you stop giving, the university doesn’t care they keep doing what they want do!!
    Nothing will ever change!

I will put what I posted at backingthepack

Pros: Experience running an ACC athletics dept that has won ACC and national championships in multiple sports, she should have a good idea of the challenges at and potential of NC State due to her being a longtime ACC AD as well as Kay Yow’s sister, she has overseen facilities improvement (comcast center and probably more), and she has severely cut down the debt maryland’s AD was operating under.

Cons: Judging by maryland fans it seems she can be rather abrasive, she has had fairly public run ins with gary williams and ralph friedgen (although her demanding that neither one of them can rest on their laurels could be seen as a positive), although she has significantly decreased maryland’s debt they still are in debt and she has been there ~16 years, what does this mean for bobby purcell?

I don’t see how everyone is outright panning this hire. If I had told you that NC State would replace Fowler with an AD from a BCS school that has far outperformed NC State athletically and been run on budget wouldn’t most of you be pleased? The only reason I can see someone completely disagreeing with this hire is if they had their heart set on Purcell. I feel for the guy (purcell), but he is far from a sure thing imo.

  18. Par Shooter 06/25/2010 at 8:33 AM #

This is a safety hire cut from the same cloth as the TOB hire. It’s safe to say that the hope/change phase of Woodson’s tenure is over. Back to the regularly scheduled program of being afraid to take a risk and shoot for excellence, replacing that with hoping for just good enough. So far I’d grade Woodson right around Monteith and Oblinger – this is exactly how they would have handled a similar situation.

I don’t get the argument that this is a status quo hire. Yow is someone who has been running her own program that has absolutely nothing to do with NC State or the good ol’ boy network for 16 years. In fact she seems to be pretty damned head strong and not someone who is going to get pushed around. Reading some of these “sky is falling” posts makes me feel like I am taking crazy pills.

Does anyone know Yow’s age? Google is failing me.

  21. coach13 06/25/2010 at 9:04 AM #

Alot of silly comments IMO. Obviously some of you didn’t even want a search but instead just hire Purcell. She did try to buy out the Friedge, hell in the past Fowler would have given him a 20 yr extension.

I think she has done what was in her power to make Md overall very competative. She may not be the greastest hire or she may be, but we have enough controversey with expectations brewing with TOB and Lowe to find out pretty soon how she handles things.

I for 1 am willing to wait and see on this.

  22. TOBtime 06/25/2010 at 9:23 AM #

Wow. Just getting back on here after some vacation and travel and get hit with this “awesome” news. So much for hope and change. All I can do is hope this sinking feeling in my stomach is unfounded and years from now I look back on how silly it was to feel that way.

This was really the best we could do after a nation-wide search? Through all levels of industry and university managers? Does our position suck that bad or was this search less than what we were told it was going to be? My feeling is we should just go ahead and join the damn Southern Conference but as I said I hope that gets proven wrong.

From reading articles around the web this morning, she seems like what we need. Sounds like she is going to come in and clean house. She’s not afraid to take on big coaches. The opposite of uncle Jed.

  25. packalum44 06/25/2010 at 9:27 AM #

Why is everyone being so dramatic and pessimistic? I have mixed emotions like everyone but think of the alternatives which basically include Purcell or a non-BCS AD. Would those two choices really be that much better? This woman at least had the balls….errrr….well the courage to stand up to Coach Williams who is a complete asshole. Could you imagine ol’ Lee in that situation. He’d be so far up William’s ass wanting to be best friends with him.

I bet Sid and TOB just had a little shiver run down their spine when they heard the news. And quite frankly, that’s a good thing.

Also, MD’s much higher in the director cup standings than Ron Wellman’s Deacons.

    Good hire.
