Report: Wear Brothers to Transfer from Carolina

This week keeps getting better. (Link)

According to a report in the Long Beach Press-Telegram David and Travis Wear are set to leave the University of North Carolina. The two Wears each averaged about 10 minutes per game in their freshman seasons.

The Wear’s father told Frank Burlison of the Long Beach Press-Telegram that he hoped to have each of his sons released from their scholarship agreements with the university as soon as Thursday. Dave Wear saying he had already spoken to Roy Williams, and adding both David and Travis had taken their last spring semester finals yesterday.

Although the Wear brothers were anything but impressive in their freshman campaign in Chapel Hill, their loss creates a significant problem of depth in the post for the Tarheels who already are losing Deon Thompson to graduation and Ed Davis to the NBA.

Don’t feel too bad for Carolina as they have ESPN’s #2 ranked recruiting class in the country.

I remember an article a year or so ago focused on sketchy recruiting practices that subtly mentioned the Wears’ AAU (or was it high school?) representatives were the beneficiaries of loopholes in NCAA rules that allowed ole Roy to pay them for an obviously bogus ‘recruiting analysis service’ &/or appearances at ole Roy’s basketball camps. I wonder if they have to return that money now that their indentured servants are bolting on their commitment?

Could this be a sign that our pennance has ended?

UNC goes to NIT (negative trend for them)
NCSU goes to NIT (positive trend for us)
UNC gets another top 5 recruiting class (same old for them)
NCSU gets a top 5 recruiting class (best in many years for us)
NCSU gets new chancellor (so far he looks like a winner)
NCSU loses albatross AD (good news – as long as we don’t blow the replacement hire)
UNC has two players transfer out

    I’m liking the Trend

As I posted on another thread, it just couldn’t be much more exciting right now, and especially this week, to be in Wolfpack Nation. AVM getting thrown out on her skirt would be the icing on the cake.

The cracks in the chapel hole facade continue to run and get deeper.

  3. wolfie91 05/06/2010 at 8:25 AM #

I wouldn’t get too excited yet. UNC is losing two talented players in the Wears and that leaves them thin up front, that’s for sure, but they can still put a talented team on the floor night in and night out. And it gives Roy a chance to “upgrade” on their positions in 2011.

  4. Derek Medlin 05/06/2010 at 8:44 AM #

Roy better hope Zeller doesn’t get hurt again (which happens about as often as the change of seasons) or he’s going to be SOL. Will Graves at the four night in and night out doesn’t exactly intimidate.

I have always thought of the Wears as depth fillers for unc, and maybe they realized that is what they would be. I think Travis would have at least been a valuable four year player, which unc really needs to balance out the super talents that don’t stick around. UNC is going to have a tall lineup again this year, but they are still thin (physically and depthwise) at the 4 and 5.

  6. JCPack 05/06/2010 at 8:47 AM #

They were highly overrated. This will be bad long term b/c it frees up scholly’s for real talent. Could hurt next year…

“And it gives Roy a chance to “upgrade” on their positions in 2011.”

It would be harder than you think to get 2 freshman big men that would be an upgrade over Jr. Wear twins. UNC is a championship program I hate to say. And more often than not freshman talent doesn’t bring you National Championships. Danny Greens, Tyler Hansjobs, Wayne Ellingtons, Sean Mays, and Jackie Manuels win you championships.

  8. PacknSack 05/06/2010 at 9:11 AM #

Their minutes weren’t going up next year. So this does little to Carolina and gives the program two more scholarships for the 2011 class.

  9. tuckerdorm1983 05/06/2010 at 9:11 AM #

well, in the short run it leaves them thin up front. No backup plan. Henson and Zeller are all they got. I will put CJL, TS and Howell, Painter and Vanilla Thunder from down under against them any day.

  10. Thinkpack17 05/06/2010 at 9:20 AM #

How do you figure they weren’t going to play? One of them plays the 4, the other is more of a 3…How many front court players would be in front of them?

  11. packalum44 05/06/2010 at 9:56 AM #

This is a big deal for UNC. The Wear twins were top 75 4-star recruits. They weren’t expected to impact as freshmen. Usually only a handful of 5-star freshmen can (like the 3 coming here). Not to mention they were playing behind 3 5-star NBA talents in Zeller/Davis/Henson and a talented Senior in Deon.

These twins would have filled the two-deep for the 4 & 5 and showed signs of promise. Now all they have are Zeller and Henson. In my mind we have a much better chance to be a better team than them.

I just looked at UNC’s roster and incoming recruits. I didn’t realize they only have 2 post players (Henson and Zeller). Wow! They are going to have to play really small next year!

  13. Thinkpack17 05/06/2010 at 10:14 AM #

UNC fans are going to try to act like it’s not a big deal, saying they weren’t that good…but you can’t have it both ways can you? These were two guys who were All Americans, they played last year even with NBA players Deon and Ed Davis ahead of them. This year at least one of them is going to be the first big man off the bench, they both are going to play a good amount of minutes and it’s not a big deal?

You are telling me Roy Williams…the greatest coach in the land can’t make these 2 High School All Americans assets after getting minutes for 2 years in his program? He can’t make them better than incoming freshmen? Get outta here.

Well if Karma is really with the Pack, K’s back will flare up before next November. (not that I’m wishing, just saying….)

  15. Classof89 05/06/2010 at 10:23 AM #

    ^
Duke’s poor team that year caused the back to “flare up”, not the other way around…

  16. newt 05/06/2010 at 10:39 AM #

I’ve been hearing how this move is no big deal and that it’s even “addition by subtraction,” because now Roy can upgrade!

Upgrade? These guys were McDonald’s AAs, versatile and very big forwards.

Both were ranked higher than Henson, according to this glowing article:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/luke_winn/01/28/wear.twins/

You don’t lose two guys like that at this point in the year and it have no impact.

That’s a lot of size gone. Henson is a scarecrow and Barnes is shorter.

  17. wolfpacktexx 05/06/2010 at 11:16 AM #

Let me point out both Wear brothers were McDonald’s All Americans…

Yes there is a trend if certain schools UNCCH, UCLA, Kansas, Duke, Kent … receive a verbal commitment then this player by default is in the McDonald’s game… I believe UNC now has 10 on the squad, well let me correct this soon to be eight (8).

Like many SFN readers I have Tarholes in my family. I have pointed this out that this creates a false sense of recruiting prowess and now they are starting to agree.
Let’s see how Harrow and Brown (who were not invited to the club) measure up to UNC’s McDonalds All Americans Strickland, Marshall…

Can it be a coincidence that this came out right after CJ Leslie signed his LOI? No. The truth is they were both afraid of getting posterized, so they are fleeing Chapel Hill.

  19. wufpup76 05/06/2010 at 11:58 AM #

I’m sure most chapel hole fans are saying:

    “Ohh no!!!! Not the Overrated’s!!!”

They were extremely overrated b/c they signed with unx and vice versa. That said, this definitely has an impact – at least for this season and perhaps next.

Their dad sounds like a soccer dad … “My kids are teh BEST and tehy deserve to play more!” (easy soccer parents, I’m just having some fun 🙂 )

And Larry Drew is probably my favorite Hole in a long time … Wait, that didn’t sound right.

  20. Lunatic Fringe 05/06/2010 at 12:02 PM #

So much for the UNC argument that NC State has talented first five, but UNC has more depth to win. I guess UNC is praying the team chemistry line of reasoning sticks.

  21. ruffles31 05/06/2010 at 12:04 PM #

I guess the Wear twins wanted to go somewhere to play in the NCAA Tournament.

  22. Lunatic Fringe 05/06/2010 at 12:13 PM #

One more thing for UNC fans, after that last season of UNC basketball and two players assured of PT next year leaving makes you wonder what team is truly dealing with team chemistry issues.

This article by Adam Gold makes a pretty solid arguement as to how UNC will be able to turn the departure of the Brothers Wear into a positive buuuut….

…Concerning when they play us, not only do we have the talent in our frontcourt to pound them into submission (or at least foul trouble) but, if need be we also have the speed and length to run with them to prevent their supposed line-up advantage…

…And talk about chemistry & discipline? What does it say when it takes a graduate in Thompson, to remind Hensen, Strickland, & Drew2 to behave professionally and mature as they mock the Wear twins leaving…haha classic…

  24. Lunatic Fringe 05/06/2010 at 12:41 PM #

The basis of Gold’s argument is Zeller is going to log 32 minutes a game. Really?!?

We are talking about Mr Glass here who has yet to play a whole season at 17 minutes per game. Mr. Glass is now going to double his minutes & stay healthy…Really?!?

  25. JeremyH 05/06/2010 at 12:43 PM #

they now have a thin front-line. gives a new meaning to “shorty get loose”
