NC State’s secondary needs to improve, or else

The defensive secondary was just one of the major issues the Wolfpack defense had in 2009. Without major improvement before the season opener September 4, it could be the issue in 2010. Aside from the issues facing Jarvis Byrd, the secondary is simply unproven. Even with less experience on the defensive line, the front seven of the defense could very well be better in 2010. If NC State wants to have the success its capable of, the secondary better come along.

The ACC Sports Journal has been reviewing the spring workout for every team in the conference and putting together thoughts for fans letting everyone know what to expect come August. Andrew Jones’ article on NC State is one of those very well-written pieces.

Spring Football Review: NC State

The annual theme for N.C. State’s spring football practice is “Back to Basics,” which made a heck of a lot of sense this time around.

Nowhere was that the case more than in the defensive secondary, where the Wolfpack returns a pair of starters from a unit that was discombobulated and ineffective last fall, and where all eight players on the depth chart were either freshmen or sophomores.

Spring games offer only so much definitive evidence, but at times they can be quite revealing. The Red and White units in State’s spring game surrendered 644 yards to quarterbacks Mike Glennon and Daniel Imhoff. Most came in the first half, when there was no running clock. It would have been worse, otherwise.

Returning secondary starter C.J. Wilson said the group’s performance “wasn’t indicative of how we progressed this spring.”

Wolfpack coach Tom O’Brien, though, somewhat disagreed.

Got that right. Holding teams under 24 avg will be the difference b/n a 3-4 win season and a 7-8 win season. Unless they (defense) do a real 180 (i.e. worst to first), I don’t see them getting more than 8 wins. Maybe they’ll surprise us.

This bunch [secondary] has the most room for growth of anybody in the program, but it’s doubtful they’ll ever be able to overcome a potentially mediocre pass rush, especially given that the defensive line must replace all four starters.

I frequently disagree with Jones, but I’m in total agreement with this thought and why I’m pessimistic about seeing much improvement this year. There is no reason to think that the pass defense will show measurable improvement without an improved pass rush.

Or get to the QB a bit quicker…

Hopefully Archer will change his “Death By A Thousand Cuts” defensive philosophy.

The secondary certainly is awful, especially when you consider passing yards. However, I feel the secondary’s performance last year (and perhaps in the Spring game) was as much a symptom as part of the problem. I said last year and still believe that our performance as linebacker has to improve markedly. The LB corp’s inabilit to either get to the QB or stop the underneath stuff left the DBs vulnerable and having to cover more ground. Of course the DL needs to bring the pressure too. But if we improve in the middle of the defense, that will improve the overall defense’s performance.

Tenuta is our only hope. I doubt he sits idly by focusing on the linebackers as he watched Archer employ an ineffective strategy. There’s a vacuum on defense and I fully expect him to fill it. There are talent and depth issues to be sure but NOT as bad as what was displayed last fall. Archer flat out sucks huge balls. Period.

I really hope that TOB has the personnel he wants w/ his CBs…While we have (by my count) 2 or 3 promising safeties coming in this year as True freshmen – we don’t have any new corners.

2 years ago – I thought the problem was the middle of our D. Last year, it seemed like we got beat plenty not in the middle/middle but truly in the secondary. A lot of the plays were really close – w/ our guys just a few feet away from making the play.

If this zone thing is going to work out – it will show fruits this year. If our D is as God-awful as it has been in years 2 and 3 for TOB – this is probably it.

Of the 3 promising freshman, Amerson will more likely play CB, Johnson could move to CB, and Donte Greene will be moved to the Audie Cole LB spot. That is my quess, not that I know anything.

I’m still puzzled (but happy) about the Tenuta hire.

During TOB’s first interviews, he said that he preferred a make/don’t break defense and he hired a DC with the same philosophy. Tenuta’s defenses at GT were the complete opposite…an attacking defense that often caused the opposing offenses to make mistakes.

Is TOB looking to change the defense or is Tenuta just looking for a paycheck until a major DC position opens? It will be interesting (and I hope to be pleasantly surprised by) the defensive schemes used this year. It will also be telling if Tenuta quickly leaves for another job.

telling in the same way it was telling when Norm Chow vacated the premises after one year with Amato…but you know, it’s a similar situation in a way–both viewed themselves as “elite” college assistant coaches, and I’m guessing they feel like our mediocre, underachieving, historically irrelevent football program is somewhat unworthy of their “superior talents”…I guess I can’t really say I blame them…

  11. tjfoose1 05/26/2010 at 3:20 PM #

Don’t know about the secondary, but the pass rush WILL be better this year. If nothing else, a healthy Nate Irving and more athletic starters on the DLine will see to that.

What is in question is how the trade off of experience and discipline for quickness and athleticism plays out across the front four.

We could see an improved pass rush coupled with an inferior run defense w/ our front 4 getting caught out of position and gashed for big gains.

That could exacerbate the problem w/, and slow the development of, the secondary. They’ll have to choose… either slow on the run support due to focusing on improving pass coverage, or forced into focusing more on run support (exposing pass coverage) due to inexperience caused gaffs of the DL.

    My two cents worth, anyway

^ Can you blame a coach for wanting to be at a traditional football power, which is most often the best path to a head coaching job?

That’s why Doc Holliday left, IIRC, and I could not blame him one bit.

  13. Packfan28 05/26/2010 at 3:26 PM #

A “bend but don’t break” defensive strategy doesn’t work when you give the other team the ball at their 40 yard line every change of possession. A little bit of bend puts them in scoring position.

  14. VaWolf82 05/26/2010 at 3:36 PM #

Since Nate is being moved to MLB, I don’t know if you can count on him to provide an improved pass rush.

  15. choppack1 05/26/2010 at 3:47 PM #

“During TOB’s first interviews, he said that he preferred a make/don’t break defense and he hired a DC with the same philosophy. ”

His last year at BC – they led the nation in takeaways. The next 2 years – using the same base D and same Defensive Coordinator as TOB’s last year – BC was at the top as well.

I don’t what the friggin’ problem is – but it’s obvious that the takeaways haven’t followed TOB to Raleigh. I can buy the fact that his first 2 years he was basically playing guys in zone coverage who were recruited to play man coverage. I can buy the fact that last year he was playing young guys…but it’s time for the excuses to stop.

If Tenuta can’t improve this D – quite frankly – I don’t think it’s talented enough to compete in major D1 football. And sadly, I think that may be our status right now.

  16. tjfoose1 05/26/2010 at 4:02 PM #

“Since Nate is being moved to MLB, I don’t know if you can count on him to provide an improved pass rush.”

Nate is too dynamic a player not to involve in the pass rush. He’s also great in coverage too, but there’s no way they (our defensive coaches) don’t move Nate around and use him directly (rush the passer) and indirectly (decoy to: freeze blockers at snap, and expose blocking schemes) in our pass rush schemes.

Think Norwood from SoCar. They moved him all over the field. Just having him line up on the line makes the OLinemen have to go through even more mental checkdowns as they progress through their pre-snap and post-snap reads.

But then again, I could be wrong. Archer is still the DC.

I will offer my bold plan for fixing football tonight. It starts with the basic premise that we aren’t going to punt or defend effectively. If you accept that premise, then my plan is the only logical option.

  18. tjfoose1 05/26/2010 at 5:33 PM #

Well then, BJD, let’s hope we start seeing evidence of TOB’s reputation for developing O-Linemen (2-deep below) w/ solid run blocking skills. I think we will, but we’ll have to wait and see.

I’m expecting (with a tint of hoping) for B-/A+ performances from Wallace and Vermiglio (Mattes too, if healthy… haha, typical, GoPack’s most recent update for him is from the 2008 season), and solid contributions from Overgaard, Jones, and Allen.

With Crisp being a true freshman, and Good coming of surgery, I’m hoping they can have solid contributions in 2010 due to ability, and not desperate need.

    L Tackle
    70 Jake Vermiglio | 6-5, 325, Sr., 2V
    62 Duran Christophe | 6-6, 287, Fr., HS

    R Tackle
    66 Sam Jones | 6-7, 321, Fr., HS
    76 Mikel Overgaard | 6-6, 280, Jr., TR

    L Guard
    64 Andrew Wallace | 6-5, 299, So., RS
    54 Henry Lawson | 6-3, 290, Jr., 1V

    R Guard
    72 Zach Allen | 6-3, 314, So., RS
    68 Denzelle Good | 6-6, 336, Fr., HS

    Center
    53 Camden Wentz | 6-3, 290, So., HS
    67 Wayne Crawford | 6-3, 303, Jr., SQ

My view of the OL is about as depressing as the DL. State hasn’t had an effective running game in forever and I am not expecting to see one this year either.

  20. whitefang 05/26/2010 at 5:52 PM #

BJD does this mean your plan is to adopt the “no punt” strategy that has supposedly been statistically “proven” to actually give the no punting team an advantage? With our punter and our defense I like it…

  21. tjfoose1 05/26/2010 at 6:07 PM #

That’s a great idea, Whitefang. Might be our only hope.

“My view of the OL is about as depressing as the DL.”

Don’t be so down, VaWolf, at least not yet.

I saw much individual (Mattes and Wallace, particularly) improvement over the course of the season last year.

I missed the spring game and didn’t see much of the spring practices, so, admittedly based only on half analysis, half conjecture… I think our OL will be noticeably better in 2010.

Larsen is a huge loss. Replacing him will be key. Wentz has a big job ahead of him.

I’ll have a more informed opinion after seeing some preseason practices this fall.

  23. CStanley 05/26/2010 at 6:57 PM #

Not that I disagree with the assessment, but it’s depressing to see the lack of optimism among the vast majority of Wolfpack fans. I get the sick feeling this could shaping up to be TOB’s last, particularly if we don’t see lots of improvement this summer.

  24. Cosmo96 05/26/2010 at 7:08 PM #

^I’ll admit, I’m not at all optimistic about this season. Frankly, I don’t even have the urge to really pay that much attention; although when the time comes, I probably will, as much as I can. I believe that if we have another season like the last three, then it will be time to seriously look at making a coaching change, and I see no reason to believe that we won’t have another season like the last three.

Of course, when optimism is high and we’re predicted to do great things before the season starts, we usually fall on our faces. Hopefully, the inverse will be true this year.

  25. packalum44 05/26/2010 at 9:40 PM #

I feel extremely bleak about football. Sadly I don’t have faith in TOB. I simply think he’s not in his element at a southern state school. That’s all I’ll say as I’ve elaborated on this believe before. I suspect the new AD will be making a change in one of the big 2 jobs next year but I’m just an asshole who hates his alma mater so what do I know.
