Final Four Open Post

Post your thoughts about both games here. Will Butler continue its somewhat magical run against the Tom Izzo led Spartans? Will Duke be able to carry the torch for the ACC into the Championship game against a tough West Virginia squad.

I’m hoping for Duke and Butler. If for nothing else the bloodshed in CH when Duke makes the Final.

    Ditto

For the record…I’ve got Butler and WVU tonight.

Not in my original bracket or anything…but just saying.

i would enjoy seeing duke win for the sake of shared hatred for the tarbabies. but i would also like to see wvu get there, knowing that duke will be back sooner than wvu? outside of those two i don’t really care about msu/butler. my money picks are: wvu vs mich st

Just thought it would be an interesting fact to note that if Duke wins the title this year, it would be the 4th time the ACC has had back-to-back champions that were different teams, and the 5th time the ACC has had back-to-back titles in its history:

1982/1983 – North Carolina / North Carolina State
    1992/1993 – Duke / North Carolina
    2001/2002 – Duke / Maryland
    2009/2010 – North Carolina / Duke*

The 5th example would be Duke in 1991 and 1992.

Also thought another neat fact is that this would be the 6th time a team has won the “triple crown” in the ACC (Regular Season champions, ACC Tournament champions, National champions), and the 3rd time that team was a co-champion in the regular season:

    1957 – North Carolina
    1974 – North Carolina State
    1982 – North Carolina (Virginia)
    1992 – Duke
    2001 – Duke (North Carolina)
    2010 – Duke (Maryland)

    (Regular season co-champion in parenthases)

I’m really hoping for a Butler/Huggy Bear final, but I expect the exact opposite.

Whoever wins this first game had better bring a lot more Monday night, or it’s going to be a very lopsided final.

Oh lordy … Herb ball and field goal droughts have invaded the Final Four.

Come on Butler, pull it together.

  8. Wulfpack 04/03/2010 at 8:27 PM #

Brad Stevens just took Izzo to school. Wow. Never ever thought I’d see the day when Butler has a chance at the national title.

  9. Wolfy__79 04/03/2010 at 8:48 PM #

well, i don’t want to see a butler nc this year. i’m pulling for wvu/duke monday night. that game was boring, almost fell asleep.

Oh yes, CBS has issued the edict that Duke makes it to the final. Singler did everything but penetrate Mazulla.

    Carolina fan/frequent SFN reader here…

At the risk of playing chicken with the blade at the sawmill, why on Earth don’t you guys pull against Dook along with the rest of us? Do you not think they look down their…noses at you guys too?

I don’t understand why State fans don’t hate Dook the way UNC and Wake do. Someone please enlighten.

  12. Wulfpack 04/03/2010 at 9:50 PM #

    ^You wouldn’t understand.

Very impressive first half for Duke.

  13. Wolfy__79 04/03/2010 at 10:09 PM #

i figure huggins will have them ready for the second half, he always does. duke looks tough though.

  14. wufpup76 04/03/2010 at 10:33 PM #

I don’t have much love for Duke, for certain. But I can just tolerate them more than the Holes. Just the way it is.

I actually wouldn’t mind if they won the whole thing. I would say it would bode well for the ACC, but hell, the ACC is *only* the Holes and Dook. So sure, it bodes well for the blue conference … I mean ACC.

Didn’t agree with that tech call on Plumlee’s dunk. Clougherty must be going through the roof right now. “The only teams you can call that on in the ACC are the “other 10″. !!!!!!!”

See, with State fans it’s always a conspiracy. 🙂

  15. Wolfy__79 04/03/2010 at 11:06 PM #

my heart dropped when butler got injured… that’s really a shame.

  16. Wolfy__79 04/03/2010 at 11:09 PM #

the technical was a bad call. or atleast in this house. but if the duke team that played tonight shows up monday, they will demolish butler. and i think that’s pretty good for a down year for the ACC.

  17. wolfonthehill 04/03/2010 at 11:26 PM #

^ Agreed, Wolfy. I really enjoyed watching that kid the past few weeks, and it was an awful injury to watch. On the flip side, I gained a bit of respect for Huggins in watching how he dealt with the situation… no wonder he can bring in players, and no wonder they love him…

  18. MrPlywood 04/03/2010 at 11:35 PM #

One shining moment this year at least, should Dook win on Monday, State will be one of five teams to have beat the eventual National Champion. And hammered them at that.

  19. jhmd2000 04/04/2010 at 12:08 AM #

For a conference that lost its mojo, the ACC is about to put two on the board.

  20. Badinboarder09 04/04/2010 at 12:44 AM #

Why in the world was Huggy making out with his injured player??? There’s much better and less creepy ways to console an injured player that doesn’t involve breathing in his mouth…

  21. BJD95 04/04/2010 at 1:59 AM #

Oh, I do hate Duke every bit as much as UNC, usually a bit more (in basketball at least). This Duke team isn’t really that hateable, though.

Still, I’ll root my ass off for Butler Monday night. You have to be some kind of sick freak (unless you’re a Duke fan, obviously) not to want a team like Butler to win it all and be the first true mid-major champion in the modern era.

  22. wufpup76 04/04/2010 at 2:19 AM #

“This Duke team isn’t really that hateable, though.”

^Totally agree. Except for Singler. Don’t like that guy … I’ve seen him get away with too much stuff that most others get automatic T’s for.

    And yes … Go Butler.

  23. mk4dpak 04/04/2010 at 4:28 AM #

After the fact it is now a Butler/Duke champpionship. On the bright side of NC State men’s basketball, we did give Duke a loss in our only game against them, and it was quite convincing. Too bad that team didn’t show up the whole sesson.

  24. wolfonthehill 04/04/2010 at 7:12 AM #

I actually disagree on the hateability of this Duke team.

    * I hate that Scheyer pops a leg out in front of him when he takes a contested 3, then flips to the floor if a defender’s close enough to graze his shoestring… and that they get the call.
    * I hate that they run an offense based on moving screens that are rarely called, and that they protest angrily every time it is.
    * I hate that they run a defense based on contact and hand-checks that are rarely called, and that they protest angrily every time it is.
    * I hate that a cornerstone of K’s philosophy is to play the game so physically… to foul so often… that the refs simply can’t call them all. It means they get away with murder (and yes, I acknowledge that officials are equally to blame here), and that their games are rarely called equitably at the two ends of the court.

But I’ll agree that there’s no Laettner or Hurley or Wojo or Collins on this team. I just wish Singler weren’t translucent…

  25. tuckerdorm1983 04/04/2010 at 7:25 AM #

UNC won it last year. Odds are Duke wins it this year. So next year it should be our turn to win it all. GO DUKE because it rubs salt in the wounds of UNC. HEY WE BEAT DUKE.
