In the nightcap of day one action from the ACC Tournament NC State used 19 points and eight rebounds from Tracy Smith to advance past No. 6 seed Clemson, 59-57. With the win NC State became the third lower seed of the day to pick up a victory. No. 9 seed Virginia and No. 12 seed both pulled upsets in the afternoon session.

Although the Wolfpack allowed Clemson back into the game after building a double digit second half lead, State made the plays in the end to get the victory over the Tigers. NC State, now 18-14 on the year, may have also solidified a spot in the NIT with the win over Clemson.

The Wolfpack shot better than 52 percent from the field on the night and out rebounded the Tigers 32-25. Clemson shot just 39 percent from the floor and just 55 percent from the charity stripe while also committing 15 turnovers. NC State committed 19 turnovers of its own, several of which came late in the game, allowing the Tigers to rally.

Freshman forward Richard Howell nearly notched a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Farnold Degand and CJ Williams added nine and eight points, respectively. For the full box score, go here.

The Pack will face No. 3 seed FSU Friday night in the final game of the evening. Tip off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.

Early in the season, the pack was missing lots of free throws. Since then, the free throw percentage has vastly improved. It sure made a difference last night, especially late in the game when Clemson started to close the gap.

Fantastic win. Smith is becoming one of my all time favs. Howell has serious potential. Horner is closing out his career with class- even if his 3 isn’t falling he is making key plays. And Wood hit a couple 3’s State had to have. Williams is becoming somebody the other team has to consider. The spark is there- they could have folded as Clemson hit some crazy late shots, not to mention cutting the halftime lead to 4, but State hung tough. Very satisfying.

It was the kind of game you have to grind out and we did just that. I hate refs that let mugging go on for teams that like to press.

Overall, a solid performance. Horner had no offense and seemed a little out of it first half but still hustled for some rebounds second half. Mays was adequate but seemed to really lose focus badly a few times second half. Why the hell he refused to go up top and get the ball from Howell a couple of times was amazing.

That said, Howell having some ball handling skills was helpful, and that kid is gonna be in the NBA some day. I think we had 9 guys hit the court last night? Gonna need it for a deep run.

That was a good team win. I know Smith carried 1/3 of the offense, but still alot of other people got a little involved. Expect Smith to be doubled and sometimes tripled tonight. Hope somebody can step up and knock down some shots. We do that we have a descent chance.

I have no expectations tonight but I am accepting surprises. Go Pack!

Did Davis piss somebody off? He and Painter I did not see get any minutes.

This will be a descent supporting cast for our talented (hopefully live up to the hype) guards next year.

Coach 13 – your comments are spot on. Horner had some huge rebounds in the second half – and yes, he had a horrid first half.

However, I find it pretty encouraging that both Javi and Horner struggled and we won.

Oh yeah – Mays hit some huge shots.

“Did Davis piss somebody off? He and Painter I did not see get any minutes.”

I think it’s really starting to become apparent that this is another thing that Sid has brought down from the pros. The end of Sid’s rotation can vary from night to night. The first 7 spots are pretty locked in but after that whoever gets the call can depend on the match-up. You have to have patient and professional kids to pull this off, but it insures you get the most out of the end of your bench.

I will not fall in the trap of saying this team has turned a corner… BUT- more and more, we see this group doing more of the little things it takes to win.

I’m very happy for the team, and the seniors. KEEP IT UP!!!

Dr Badger – I agree. If we fight like this every night out, I’ll be thrilled.

I was very impressed with the team tonight. I think Clemson plays a style that forces you to play ugly. The defensive pressure was tough, but we dealt with it.
I have to admit, I did not think we could pull it off – but my hat is off to Sid and the team. It was a fine effort on the part of all.

I’m betting that being Wolfpackers, you are as superstitious as I. I bought a State sweatshirt a few months ago and we lost every time I wore it. Last night I had it on during the UNC game and told my family that it was jinxing Tech. They laughed at me. I changed during the half and what happened? Tech roared back immediately and eventually took them out. Not only that, but we pulled the upset too.

I’m filing the sweatshirt away for the rest of the year.

    Go Pack!!!! Win one more!!

Never thought this would happen and didn’t watch(cause I was afraid to jinx them too). It’s sad to be “afraid to watch”! Anyway, almost fell out of the bed when I saw the score later.

It’s awful when you’ve got a couple of nice HDTV’s and don’t want to even watch the games!

Shall I dare to watch later??

LOL – I thought I was the jinx, but I watched yesterday and it was all good. So now I HAVE to watch tonight…
