In the nightcap of day one action from the ACC Tournament NC State used 19 points and eight rebounds from Tracy Smith to advance past No. 6 seed Clemson, 59-57. With the win NC State became the third lower seed of the day to pick up a victory. No. 9 seed Virginia and No. 12 seed both pulled upsets in the afternoon session.

Although the Wolfpack allowed Clemson back into the game after building a double digit second half lead, State made the plays in the end to get the victory over the Tigers. NC State, now 18-14 on the year, may have also solidified a spot in the NIT with the win over Clemson.

The Wolfpack shot better than 52 percent from the field on the night and out rebounded the Tigers 32-25. Clemson shot just 39 percent from the floor and just 55 percent from the charity stripe while also committing 15 turnovers. NC State committed 19 turnovers of its own, several of which came late in the game, allowing the Tigers to rally.

Freshman forward Richard Howell nearly notched a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Farnold Degand and CJ Williams added nine and eight points, respectively. For the full box score, go here.

The Pack will face No. 3 seed FSU Friday night in the final game of the evening. Tip off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.

Great win…sketchy officiating at the end made it close to the final second ticked off…but a win is a win.

Ugly win, but we survived and advanced! I wish WRAL would pretend UNX or Dook won and show our postgame interviews live.
Booker is baby and the refs cottled him.

Good win. The State of State: our best weapon against the press is a 6’11” 260lb guy.

x2 A Win is a Win. Go Pack!

We wish Howell was 6’11”…. he’s a beast at 6’8″ (I’m assuming you’re referring to Richard). That kid can be all world by the time he leaves NC State if he works on his physique. He’s got a great IQ for the game, and soft touch with the ball. As his hands get better and he continues to develop his body, we’re going to love watching what he brings to the table. Great win tonight…. need to take it to FSU tomorrow.
    GO PACK!

we got some breaks and we got robbed towards the end so it balances out for a win tonight! GREAT JOB PACK!!

State took the lead 5 minutes in and never trailed after that. They have a real opportunity against Fla St. Go Pack!

This game displayed the amazing heart that this team has – esp. Gonzales. Both teams played their hearts out. Officiating sucked – as Wolfy says, we got the breaks at the beginning, but lost them at the end. Tracy Smith is improving every game – even when he is already so good. Some of his shots were just amazing!!! Hopefully, he’s ready to go tomorrow again.

Honestly, I hope we win for Sid tomorrow – that will definitely improve his recruiting edge. He really has developed players to the best of their potential by the time they are seniors – esp. Horner.

I bet tomorrow’s game will be packed at 9:30! Let’s go Pack!

good win. We fought hard, played good defense, rebounded well, and made shots when we needed to.

I must say that in watching the game, I’m a bit surprised by the turnover margin. Perhaps the late game officiating related turnovers affected this.

Good Job! The ACCT is all about momentum, and the Pack seems to have it.

    Now time for the ‘noles

    Sweet!

Missed everything but saw on DVR. That was a nice late night viewing 🙂

We finally beat Clemson! Now Sidney just needs a win against Maryland …

I thought we actually looked like a team tonight until late with some of the turnovers and jitters. I thought our guys controlled the pace of the game very well for the most part, and we rebounded. Lots of good things happen when you give good effort on defense and in rebounding.

Howell was spectacular. Very clutch. Now if Horner can hit a few open outside looks we could have a nice 1-2 punch at the 4 position.

Hope Javi’s ankle doesn’t swell too bad overnight tonight. I have a pretty bad feeling about tonight’s game, but we’ll see. I definitely think we can win, just got one of those bad they’re gonna shut us down feelings. Enough bad vibes … Prove me wrong guys!

    Go Pack!

Big big win. I was VERY impressed with Howell. And let us not forget about Scott Wood. He hit two big threes to keep the cushion. Overall, we did a good job of handling their pressure and capitalized when there were opportunities. Very nice win for the Pack.

FSU, I’m sure all of you know, plays extremely good defense. They also have great size in the post so our guards and wings are really going to have to step up. This will def. be another close one. Looking forward to it. Go Pack!

Good win for the Pack. I especially liked the hustle shown by our players. They really played like they wanted that win which has not always been the case this year. Congrats to the team.

Ugly win, but most importantly, a win. Now on to FSU.

  16. tuckerdorm1983 03/12/2010 at 7:32 AM #

how bout them apples??? I loved that pass at the end that went way up in the air and hit the backboard and then smith got it and put it in. It was almost as good of a pass as the one in 1983 on the final play of the season. We deserve that after the Florida debacle

  17. cc4ncspack 03/12/2010 at 7:53 AM #

Awesome TEAM effort. Scott Wood may be another Gugs by the time he leaves us. That kid has a sweet jumpshot. By the way, Sid, get on those refs asses like K, and Gary Williams do. Its ok to get mad every so often. Then, you may get some respect out there.

    It’s fun to win.

One of the impressing aspects of last night’s game was watching Richard Howell’s continued devlopment. He rebounds exteremely well for his position, as he has shown all year, but tonight was effective in shot selection as well – a problem for him earlier this year.

In 21 minutes he scored 9 pts (4-4 shooting) and pulled down 11 boards. Last night, better than any game I can remember, he stayed within the flow of our offense and stayed within his role for our team.

It’s obvious he is never going to wow us with his athleticism, but I think we’re watching one of the higher basketball IQ players in this league develop.

I thought Sid had the guys ready to go. I liked the way he went deep into his bench in the first half, looking for size in Vandenberg to give Tracy a breather, and playing Johnny Thomas again. It was like he was planning to be around for more than one game and knew he had to get some regulars a few minutes off.

Howell was a beast on the boards. That kid can sure rebound. It’s about time we had someone who could clean the glass. And even though it was hard to tell what team Mays was on for a few minutes in the second half, he didn’t totally crumble when Javi got hurt. That was important. I like it when he looks for his shot around the free throw line.

FSU doesn’t scare me as much as a Maryland matchup would have. I think we stand a real chance of sticking around another day. Pity the poor Heels had to go home so soon. Boo hoo.

Nice win – Survive and Advance !

I agree, Wulfpack, Scott Wood’s threes were key. Clemson was really sagging in the lane, and Wood knocked down two threes that opened things up for Tracy and Howell again. Clutch…

Smith was just tremendous last night. If he touches the ball in the paint, it’s automatic. And Howell played beyond his years. Great promise.

Hard to believe Horner only had two points last night. I really thought he played well, banging the boards and hustling.

Still can’t figure out why Javi and Mays see the double team coming, back themselves into a trap, and then pick up their dribble ! EVERY TIME !!!

Fortunately, FSU can’t press like Clemson, so our flaws may not be exposed as much tonight – we just have to contend with that HUGE front line.

Special Report from the Tournament….Views from the End Zone….Morning after report

We were worried when Sid made such a late appearance…several minutes after the team was on the floor. He appeared to be less energetic. He also came out very late at the half…it was about 1:30 on the clock when he walked out of the tunnel.

After the first time out in the first half, the Pack coaches looked as fired up as the players…they actually rushed the floor and congratulated the starters…really into it.

Sid became more energetic and was his old self.

We had the MO but the Zebra’s seem to want to give it to Clemson.

Would have liked more of a halftime lead….remember the UNX lead.

Pack came out and played great. Sure there were moments during the second half where we were concerned.

The officiating was HORRIBLE. Even the Carolina fans sitting around us were booing the officals. The lack on an intention was unbelievable…as was the warning on Larry Harris. We were on the State END…bottom of the lower level…exactly in line with the centerline of the court….so we had a GREAT view. It was UGLY.

Likewise, the intentional called on the other end was pathetic.

Those fouls and the poor officiating really incensed the crowd. My “survey” said that there was about 60 – 75% attendance for the evening games. The split between Orange (maybe including a few VA fans) and the RED (would also be the MD folks) was about equal….but the Wake and UNX fans were quite…until the second half…then they started cheering for the PACK.

The $72 ticket for the evening games was going for $40 – $50 around 6:00…several in our MH complex had friends that came over and picked them up….they are readily available….

If you WALK away from the scalpers, they will come AFTER you and knock off another $10 or so…and the GSO PD was NO where to be seen….obviously they want their scalpers to be able to cut their losses….of course, many of them paid 20 cents on the dollar.

There was a great crowd for the post game “concert”. I can not remember when Old McDonald sounded so good….as did the Alma Mater.

GREAT GAME….State won by 2….however as my wife says, the box score will NOT reflect the 8 points that the Ref’s scored….lets hope that tonight’s game is a little better officiated.

Yesterday was the CURSE of the WHITE UNIFORMS…..if UNX had held their poise, then it would have been a total sweep….all the Whites, except for GA Tech went home….

GO PACK….come on down….there are tickets everywhere….support the pack.

I loved what Tracy did on the last play. With 2.9 secs left we miss the front end of a one-and-one. The rebound is juggled and the ball hits the floor. Tracy smothered it like a grenade in a foxhole and let the clock run out. I know he was thinking that a Florida miracle was not going to happen on his watch. Smart play.

  23. choppack1 03/12/2010 at 9:04 AM #

To me, the play that said it all was the last. We were up 2 and Mays missed the foul shot…CJ WILLIAMS tips the rebound forward – game over.

Wow. What a game. Our guys showed great heart last night. We showed fight and toughness…and our last 2 games have been against teams that are notorious for being physical and tough – and we’ve come out OK.

Great job on the boards. After getting beat early on the boards, Horner redeemed himself w/ some key rebounds in the second half. Howell has incredible hands and a great reach – there’s a reason he’s one of the Top rebounders in the college game per minute played.

Finally, ACC refs are scum of the earth. There were calls that were missed that had to be malicious. If you aren’t UNC or Duke and you aren’t favored, it’s like Olympic boxing. You literally have to knock your opponent out for them not to shadily decide the outcome.

“@tarheelfanblog Pack fans boo the officials better than any fan base I have seen.”

Few times have I been more proud than when that tweet above came across!

That was my first live ACC Tourney. Yeah, I know it was a Thursday session, but it was still a great thing to share with my Dad!

The officiating for both night games was HORRIBLE. I watched the entire episode with the NCSU bench warning. The coach did nothing to draw such a warning. The tackle of Howell should have resulted in an ejection…period.
For a minute there I thought we were playing against Dook…

I hear ya SJ. When Mays stepped to the free throw line for that 1 and 1 at the end of the game how many of us thought about the Florida game?
