Different night, same story for NC State.

The Wolfpack hit just one field goal in the final ten minutes against the Terps, allowing Maryland to erase a 10-point halftime deficit and pick up a nine-point win in its third game in five days. The Terps (18-7, 8-3), led by Greivis Vasquez, climbed into second place in the ACC with Wednesday night’s win and pushed NC State even deeper into the bottom of the conference standings.

Vasquez scored 26 points (17 in the second half) and dished out six assists while freshman Jordan Williams tallied 19 points and 11 boards. Dennis Horner led NC State (14-13, 2-10) with 19 points and ten boards, but only one other player, Tracy Smith, scored in double figures for the Pack.

“Like him or not, he’s a tough guy. He’s tough mentally and he just took the team right on his back and led them in there,” Sidney Lowe said of Vasquez. “That’s what good players do. I think we have a guy that can lead from a scoring standpoint but I don’t think we have anyone on the perimeter or anywhere else that will lead.”

Freshman forward Scott Wood, who scored nine points in 26 minutes, summed up NC State’s loss simply.

“Bad shots, turnovers, no defense, no energy, you want anymore? Just a lack of execution, coaches can’t do it for us,” he said. “They give us all the right stuff and it seems like we don’t want to do it.”

Maryland’s 22-5 run to end the game completely erased any hope for an NC State victory even after the Wolfpack played well enough to take a 10-point lead into halftime. NC State played as well as it had since the victory over Duke Jan. 20 before faltering in the second half. Lowe said he was pleased with the effort in the first 20 minutes but completely confused by the team he saw during the second 20 minutes.

“Two totally different halves. I thought we played real well both offensively and defensively. I thought we were very aggressive, I thought we executed offensively the way we wanted to and in the second half we came out and turned it over the first time we had the ball,” he said. “We got away from what we did in the first half. As a result we didn’t shoot well in the second half.”

Wood said it’s frustrating to go through stretches like the last 10 minutes of the second half, especially after playing so well for a good part of the night. NC State scored just 21 points in the second half after putting up 37 before the break.

“I don’t want to say it’s a mental block but it’s definitely in your brain and it’s frustrating when you play that well in the first half and you  play well in halves and you play well in spurts and you just can’t put it together for 40 minutes,” he said. “We’re just going to have to keep working. Every fan in the stands saw what we can do in the first half so if we could just put it together we’ll be fine.”

Lowe also commented on the potential of the team but said it’s frustrating to repeatedly see the same types of problems keep NC State from winning games.

“I’m not sure where their pulse is. I know they were disappointed in there, one guy looked like he was going to cry, a lot of guys with their heads down but you know the question is what are you going to do about it? That’s the question,” he said. “I’m frustrated because I’m trying to teach something. it’s not just about playing the game, it’s about how you play the game. To go over time and time and time again and talk about how you ply the game the right way, and making the right decisions and making the right plays. To do it in one half and not do it in the other is frustrating.”

If Herb sucked as a head coach I’d be real interested to know the adjective you’d use to describe Lowe’s tenure. Is there such a word?

I subscribe to the theory that Herb wasn’t the answer. It’s clear now Sid isn’t. Maybe we will figure it out by trial and error. Hopefully we’ll be relevant again in my lifetime, but I am beginning to have serious doubts about it. The more I think about it, the more I am beginning to think Lee Fowler is taking great delight in our plight. It’s sickening, really.

Take your choice of any high school coach in the state. They could at least guide us to last place. Let them be the coach for the rest of the season. Or I can coach for the remainder of the season. We don’t have to pay someone millions of dollars to lose out.

Also, no matter what learning curve anyone made up for Sid to be on when he started, you will never get me to believe that it is acceptable for a coach to put together a team with this level of talent in year 4. What is your answer to this???…just wait til year 5! I’m talking about right here and right now – what we’ve seen and what we’re currently seeing…10TH PLACE…LAST PLACE…10TH PLACE…LAST PLACE!!!!!!!

There is not one damn thing you can tell me about incoming talent that will make up for that.

bobby knight= has been asshole. only a few of his players “liked” him, let alone loved him. haha, check your facts. if he was such a good coach where did the tt job get him?.. oh yeah, got his son a job.

its a no brainer with hwsnbn, with sid it’s very different. and we are stuck with him until next march! i truly feel that he will step down with no success. i would throw just about everyone who played last nite under the bus, personally! horner played hard (i’m shocked).

we were the better team 1st half, we all know that. it wasn’t v’s three that had me worried at the end of the half. i was waiting for him to get into the game. the team did give up, but only under increased pressure from md. it is mental toughness, plain and simple. the unfortunate thing is, this very well may reflect on sid & co. as much as i hate to join in on that part of the coversation. i for one, liked what i heard out of sid last night.. and of wood. i think he is a winner, i think lowe is a winner. winner= winning attitude. alot of what i read on here is def a result of decades of shi# athletics. hell yeah, sid has a terrible record. i think the years of these same players not having continued success doesn’t do them any favors. they don’t know how to win b/c they never won before. and alot of them are low quality players! all this tracy smith being our only offensive threat doesn’t pan for me. … 2ndly, he’d be a fool to leave this year.. he wouldn’t amount to anything, he’s still got to get a jump shot.. something that can happen with his senior year. and he’s not a center/5man! he’s a 3-4 in the nba… he’s got alot to improve on. we don’t do ourselves anyfavors playing him at 5! if we took him out and put howell in, howell could rival his numbers.. atleast he hustles. don’t get me wrong, i like smith and think he’s solid.. but not the answer.

    my “BIG” lineup: degand, wood, horner/howell/painter, tracy/howell/painter & howell/painter/vberg.

    subs:
    1-javi/mays
    2-mays/thomas/cj
    3-horner/painter/howell/davis/thomas/cj
    4-horner/painter/howell/davis/vberg
    5-horner/painter/howell/vberg

that’s it in a nutshell. that’s about as radical/realistic as i can get.

i really think thomas needs to be on the floor. he looked really good for the split second he’s been on the court this “season.”

sidtastic substitutions, i’m at a loss? 🙁 , i don’t know what he’s going for here.. but i don’t think it is the root of the problem. by this time in the year, i don’t care who you are (thomas the only exception), you should be able to contribute somehow.

answer 1: javi should not see any playing time towards the end of the first half nor the entire second half. he took some really poor shots early on in the second half.. early in the shot clock with noonne in position to rebound!! he makes critical mistakes.

answer 2: mays does do alright with degand alongside him.. but not with cj. 1st half md, mays was in not javi when we took the lead. he was running the offense just fine. degand was with him. SIT JAVI.

anser 3: SIT JAVI. he just doesn’t get it!

i knew after taking one look at javi that he sucked year one, day one! just look at him! nuff said.

officiating: it was terrible. we get absolutely no calls on our own floor. vasquez & co. got away with murder, on our court!

next year’s taletnt: yes it will make a difference. we’ll be adding some winning attitudes on the team that currently has only a couple (wood, davis, tracy, vandenburg). not many more. but these kids are used to winning.. and not in puerto rico or mexico or whatever! i’m not saying sid is the answer for sid or whatever. i’m just saying that even poor coaching can manifest wins with good guards. see mcclinton (miami). the biggest shock with sidtastic is the fact that he has yet to get us an ACC caliber guard. his biggest oversight may ruin what i call a dream job!

did i mention to sit JAVI? hell, sit cj too, he sucks.

  4. Wolfy__79 02/19/2010 at 2:12 AM #

whoa now, while this is solely sid’s fault. we have not had talent at guard since atsur! and he was a blue collar ACC pg, really a 2. not a BLUE CHIPPER.

    CURRENT TALENT: tracy, wood,?

that’s it. everyone else is a work in progress. even howell! no talent at guard being my point

  5. Wolfy__79 02/19/2010 at 2:22 AM #

it would be nice if we would eliminate sid’s name for now and focus on fowler. the bigger problem is in fact the real problem.

congrats on the bass fishing title.

the attendance alone should speak on all the fans behalf as far as the state of NCSU. but, the big wig alumni… have to feel the pain as we do. why don’t they put a little pressure on fowler?

so what is the story on thomas? is it a mystery to all?

  6. coach13 02/19/2010 at 8:41 AM #

Johnny Thomas is the ONLY scholarship player who does not get on the floor. Can someone explain? I mean he can’t suck any worse than some of the other idiots out there! Right?

  7. Noah 02/19/2010 at 8:54 AM #

bobby knight= has been asshole. only a few of his players “liked” him, let alone loved him. haha, check your facts.

You should tell that to some of his former players sometime.

Johnny Thomas doesn’t play because he has a degenerative condition in his knee. He should probably be a medical hardship case.

  8. Khan 02/19/2010 at 8:55 AM #

Without Fowler gone, it makes no sense for Lowe to go. If Fowler stays and Lowe goes, then it’ll be another four years of “building” until we realize that that person is not the answer. Fowler is incapable of proactively making a quality hire. If he goes, then Lowe should go. Then, we might have a legitimate shot at getting someone who can coach at this level.

  9. truestatefan 02/19/2010 at 9:50 AM #

Everytime we lose who is the first to blame.. The coach, well it takes talent to win and run your system. Let’s talk some common sense you flip flop lowe with vts coach and I’m almost positive were in the same boat.. Except virgina tech with lowe would prob be better.. Because delaney is the kinda point sid needs. Heck coach k couldn’t win with our talent and lack of hustle and motivation. Pretty much think scott wood summed it up in his comment. But hey just fire low so we can be in the cellar for years to come. Sid coachs he can’t perform on the court heck I wish he could.. But if sids gone say goodbye to harrow and brown as well as others. And rebuild and suck for years to come.

I’m sick of Horner getting ragged for essentially not being a great player. He’s a solid player who would have been good in the Princeton, but he’s exposed on a this team due to its lack of talent. He tries, he does well at times and that’s how good he is, no more no less.

Smith is a hell of a college player, but he’s not an NBA prospect- he will be in Europe fairly soon if he wants to play (or the NBDL) and there’s no shame in that considering Monroe ended up in Europe and Hodge in Australia. It does speak to the talent level of this team, though. Ed Davis, a rather unaccomplished player in college, will be a lottery pick while State’s best player will be late 1st round, maybe 2nd.

The more I watch Javi and Mays the more convinced I am that State’s guard play is the worst I remember for the Pack. They try, but they are both very flawed, both physically and mentally. They try, they don’t succeed, they get frustrated and go AWOL on the court. This is Lowe’s responsibility for not having more talent back there. If Harrow and Brown don’t pan out as a remedy to this problem, then Lowe will be gone. You can’t win in college without guards.

    coach13,

Johnny Thomas will be leaving after this season. Playing him would take away time from the development of the rest of the team.

We know the story behind his knee. Thomas must be certain that he will not have a career in basketball. I doubt he wants to risk further injury and decrease his quality of life for years to come. It’s hard not to feel for the guy.

  12. JeremyH 02/19/2010 at 10:38 AM #

On the Bobby Knight subthread, he doesn’t need to be liked by his players to be effective. Phil Jackson probably irks the hell out of some of his with some of his strategically placed backhanded comments in the press; however it is done to ultimately motivate them, and he does it in such a way that it is mostly effective. I have noticed coaches Self and Calipari do this over the last few months.

Players hate Bobby Knight when they played for him probably love him after they have moved on, because he made them BETTER. I can say I have felt that way about some former professors.

Some of the blame for our lack of success this year probably should go to current crop of players. Now I have stuck up for Sid and what the new guards will bring, but the more I think about it, the more I am conflicted about what Sid is representing in these press releases. Is there a fundamental difference between motivating players with comments in the press and completing dumping on them such that it is impossible for them to recover their confidence? All of this business, done well or poorly, is dependent on first-hand experience.

  13. Rochester 02/19/2010 at 10:49 AM #

Anyone who honestly believes Lowe is as effective a coach as Coach K knows next to nothing about basketball. If Coach K had our roster he would at least teach them how to defend and how not to fold once they had a lead. I think he could even figure out some offensive plays other than force the ball into Smith and hope for the best.

Lack of hustle and motivation come back on the coach, who recruited the players and who coaches them in practice every day. In our case, his name is Sidney Lowe.

  14. packfan03 02/19/2010 at 10:51 AM #

In Scott Wood’s Maryland post game remarks, he made the comment that the players aren’t executing the coach’s gameplan well enough and that it’s up to the players to play hard for 40 minutes – that the coaches can’t do everything for them (paraphrased).

Sidney has been critical of the team in his post game pressers, but it doesn’t seem that the players are annoyed by this. Wood went out of his way to take responsibility.

I’m not posting this comment to support/defend Lowe as a coach, but it doesn’t seem that his remarks have had a negative effect on the morale of the team. Although, losing this much certainly has…

  15. truestatefan 02/19/2010 at 12:01 PM #

Pretty sure our defense has not been the problem. Its a thing called lack of taking good shots and running the offense the way he tells them to. 3 of vasquez shots, javi played great d on.. He just happened to get the shot in.. We played great d on carolina and georgia tech.. We just can’t seem to find the bucket or run the plays correctly when he calls them.. Coach k couldn’t do anything but bench players which we would still lose from the lack of talent. Mark my words down and take them to the bank you’ll be praising sid next year because harrow and brown are beast.. Look at paul hewitt at gt they sucked last year and everyone was calling for his head. This year there young but way better than last year. If lowe is such a bad coach and doesn’t know anything then you tell me how he has the number 4 recruit class next year. And gets these guys to come to a school who really hasn’t competed
For a national championship in years..and I mean years. That’s how carolina and duke are always contending because people look at the success the school has had. I don’t care what all you haters say sid deserves to be the coach.. Even under herb they found ways to choke…

I thought LF should have been fired immediately after the men’s bball coaching search. I subscribed to the theory that he should never be allowed to hire another revenue coach.

I am not in any inner circles, but it certainly looked like with TOB that LF had “shared” responsibility. I’ll debate whether TOB was a good hire or the best hire (I was a PJ man).

Now, let’s look at the Harper hire in women’s BB. Not picking Glance was the anti-Fowler move. Fowler would have hired Glance in a second because it was the easiest way out. I was actually in support of Glance solely because I didn’t think Fowler could hire a decent coach. I figured we’d give Glance a couple of years. She’d ultimately either sink or swim (probably sink), but we’d be rid of Fowler by the time we had to hire her replacement. From an external perspective, Fowler didn’t make that hire and we ended up with someone who I think will turn out to be very, very good. We made a tough decision and then followed it up with a good hire.

I guess what I’m saying is this. Given the recent trends of our hiring process, do we actually think that LF would be in charge of another coaching search if we were to have at the end of the season? Between the rumors of his demise and what appear to be our recent hiring trends, I honestly think that answer is no. To me, this means that we should view SL based solely on his successes and failures.

How to run a coaching search: Hire a third party consultant (i.e. Nienas) to do a quiet search before you fire your current coach. When they come up with an acceptable candidate, give Sid a clock with a sticker on it as his consolation prize, and hire the new coach. Fowler’s part can be limited to consoling Sid after he’s canned.

My first call if I’m in charge of the search goes to Scott Drew at Baylor.

People hate Coach K…but his players in the past love him…he’s an excellent coach, he’d do well with about any gathering of talent in the college ranks…

Watching Duke play team defense and run off of various screens to get its playmakers open is a thing of beauty…for a Basketball purist, its much more exciting to me then an up-tempo offese who gets a bulk of their points from fastbreaks and turnovers…

Were in the desert riding a horse with no name”sidney lowe”and we will never get out of the rain!

Best thing for him to do after the last home game a loss to BC:
RESIGN AND GO INTO THE DESERT SO WE CAN FORGET YOUR NAME1:
    SIDNEY LOWE

“Watching Duke play team defense and run off of various screens to get its playmakers open is a thing of beauty…for a Basketball purist, its much more exciting to me then an up-tempo offese who gets a bulk of their points from fastbreaks and turnovers…”

i agree, however i would say its more of a necessity to me. i hell hate some run & gun hop hop bee bop basketball. i think it too is necessary, but only a lunatic would base their entire offense on that f.e. roytoy, unc-ch in general. i love duke’s effort on defense, it’s unmatched in the ACC. i think K is a little rigid once against certain types = unx, physical teams… or is that the type of players he recruits? but i’d vote him as the best coach in the ACC hands down.

look, i like bobby knight. i guess i was a little extreme with my earlier post. but part of my point was he is a has been asshole! i would have welcomed him with open arms a. before hwsnbn extension or b. when sid was hired. then, NOT NOW. i agree, he does make the players better. i wouldn’t mind him working in our athletic dept, he’d def be a good voice.

hiring coaches is tricky to me, especially since i can’t be hands on … or even have any influence as a lower tier fan! i don’t have thousands of dollars to give back to school/athltic dept.. and i’d have to be a multimillionare to consider it. i think a longtime entity like NCSU should be self sufficient in that dept. aside from small contributions, i do spend a hell of alot of money on football in general. ..back to coaches, i firmly believe NCSU is probably the toughest gig in the ACC and one of the toughest in the county. there are alot of coaches i like out there.. alot. and i think alot of them are better or a better fit than one of our most celebrated former players. its so tough to have someone inside the family be a coach at the same school, ntm NCSU. coaches like the aforementioned balyor dude, look like great fits for us. with the lack of success here, the uncertainty of winning is great… noone likes the outlook of another four years of rebuilding.

    mcdonald’s all americans:

i guess the name is fitting. what do you get when you go to mc’d’s? its a good business, but the quality isn’t all that great. sure there some talented HIGH SCHOOL players one, that’s a no brainer. i just don’t there is any way it can represent the absolute best players out there. team players especially. wasn’t costner a mcdaa?!

i like our incoming talent. i like the fact that harrow is a smaller guy, i think the smaller frame guards make the best guards. i don’t mind that lozo isn’t the best student, there are more things to life than making straight a’s. especially in today’s educational system. granted, having him this year would be much better. those are the cards we’re dealt.

with such an non-traditional hire, sid being a part of our celebrated past. i understand this grossly extended forgiveness period. don’t really like losing all that much.

K with our lack of talent: HA! that’s funny. one of the superior things about k is that he’s got a pretty good plan b and c.. especially with players for his system. i’m sure he could do better than sid with these players.. however, he has been a college coach for a couple of decades, right?
