    From wolfpack4ever:

    Good defense NO!
    Good rebounding NO!
    Good outside shooting NO!
    Good free throw shooting NO!
Good offensive scheme NO! It is near impossible to determine what our base offense is!
Good coaching NO! NO! Good coaches can occasionally take an overmatched, undertalented team and win some games that they should not. It may be by a unique defensive strategy, match up substitutions or fouling strategy.

Now I assume you are menaing every time the team comes out. Becuse i can show you times this year where our defense is good. We have been shooting free throws at a 75% rate the last 7-8 games. We get open shots, so in my mind that makes a good offensive sceme. Good coaching -well your words are “we can occaisionally take a team with inferior talent and win some games they should not”. Marquette, Duke, Florida State.

I am curious. Many have said how sorry our team was, how deviod of talent, at the beginning of the year. Then when we lose close games the argument turns to how bad our coaching is. Am I confused? Did our talent all of a sudden get great during the year?

The posts from the youngins are so optimistic and rediculous. Just like UNC under MattD, he lost with his recruits with the eventual Championship team. And that was a big, tallented class. Now they think 2 little freshmen are going to launch us from the BOTTOM of the ACC to a tournament bid? He couldn’t win with the eventual champion! And to think as a State alum I have have always bragged State grads have more common sense. Oh I think you’ll see an improvement. Maybe we’ll finish 8th or 9th instead of 11th or 12th. Yep…that’s what we’ve all been waiting for.

I SAY TO ANY OF YOU MORONS WHO THINK 2 FRESHMEN CAN PUT THIS BOTTOM OF THE ACC TEAM INTO THE TOURNAMENT NEXT YEAR YOU R EITHER VERY IGNORANT OR AN IDIOT. I don’t care if you don’t like it. What a joke.

    So…why wait 1 more year?

Everyone is talking about recruiting. It is one of the most important parts of coaching. Sid did come in with no recent college ties. However, he inherited our #1 recruiter who had been here for 10 yrs. Did Larry Harris have to start back at zero because we had a new head coach. Also, Monte and Pete have a ton of college experience yet everyone points out Sid is just getting settled in year four! Please recruiting in today’s game is every year and you can not afford mistakes much less numerous ones. This team is Sid’s he signed these guys so if there is a lack of talent that is on Sid and his staff. Next year will never get here it never does. Our incoming recruits if they make it to school are really good players. Luke I have seen play twice and I am not sure how much he can contribute next year if he shows up. Leslie would be a good catch if they can land him.

And while Harrow may be very tallented, he is very small (160 lbs soaking wet). He is going to have to bulk up to handle the rigors of college ball. Nothing special is going to happen next year…or the next…or the next. And let Smith leave early and next year will be even UG-LEE-er. (a Fowler Reference).

Of course, I disagree. Luckily, Sid WILL be back next year and you’ll have a chance to throw it in us “youngins” faces.

I’m glad to know my optimism causes you such great pain :-). Obviously, you are implying that you have endured NC State athletics longer than I have. If that is true, I give you credit. If it’s going to be like this for the next 25 years…ugh. My first 25 were bad enough.

“Regardless of your opinion, Sidney isn’t going to be fired this year, so why not support the program?”

Why do you hate America so much? Don’t you realize that if you don’t vote for my particular political party, the terrorists win??

Packfan03 – would you please list for me the coaches at NC State who did NOT recruit well?

    Would that be:

Herb Sendek, who regularly brought in top-100 talent like Archie Miller, Marcus Melvin, Scooter Sherrill, Julius Hodge, Levi Watkins, Cedric Simmons, Gavin Grant, Josh Powell, Michael Bell, and about a dozen other guys?

Or Les Robinson? Who brought in Chuck Kornegay, Todd Fuller, Marcus Wilson (had a commitement from Jason Sasser), CC Harrison, Ishua Benjamin, Mark Davis, and Andre McCullom?

Jim Valvano? Who had about 10 straight top-20 recruiting classes and had top five classes four times?

Norm Sloan? Who brought in David Thompson, Sidney Lowe, Derrick Whittenburg, Thurl Bailey, Kenny Carr (I’m deliberately leaving off Glenn Sudhop, who WAS ranked in the top-10) and plenty of others?

You talk about Lowe as though his recruiting prowess is unprecedented. EVERY coach at NC State recruits well. It’s like saying that Rich Rodriguez shouldn’t be fired at Michigan because he’s recruiting well.

  9. packfan03 02/08/2010 at 1:35 PM #

Noah, is your argument that any coach could come to NCSU and recruit well? I don’t believe I’ve contrased the recruiting prowess of Sidney vs. his predecessors and suggested otherwise. I’ve simply stated that we won’t know how good of a coach Lowe is until he enjoys the fruits of his own successful recruiting classes.

Again, thankfully Sid will be here next year and your argument can be revisited – with merit, based on our on-court results.

  10. Noah 02/08/2010 at 2:09 PM #

“Noah, is your argument that any coach could come to NCSU and recruit well?”

I’m saying that every coach at NCSU *has* recruited well…therefore you don’t get points in your favor for recruiting.

  11. Conrad 02/08/2010 at 3:36 PM #

Noah, Robinson & Sendek best recurit was a total bust besides Hodges. This program hasnt had enough talent to keep in the top 5 in the ACC. Now Lowe is beginning to stock the team with quality ACC talent from the bottom to the top. So lets not run off the best recuriting class the days of Valvano with this nonsense about firing Lowe. Because the bball program can not take another 10 yrs of rebuilding.

  12. VaWolf82 02/08/2010 at 3:45 PM #

There’s no need to overstate things. Next year’s class is not ranked as high as the Hodge class.

  13. coach13 02/08/2010 at 4:12 PM #

A last word on this whole recruiting crap…they are projected numbers, not guarantees, and there are some highly ranked guys who some solid programs don’t even want. Horner was a top 100 recruit if I recall. Is he one of the top 100 Sr’s in the entire NCAA this year. How about Painter. Does he rank among this year’s top 100 freshmen in the NCAA?

A-Talent with a good coach WILL win.
B-So-so talent with a good coach CAN win.
    C-Talent with a so-so coach CAN win.
D-Talent with a crappy coach CAN lose.
E-So-so talent and a crappy coach WILL lose.

I feel we currently fall under E, and if we get a good class next year, we will move up to C=D. With Lowe, we eliminate A, B and C as possabilities.

  14. packfan03 02/08/2010 at 4:28 PM #

The great thing about this discussion is we will know definitively, next year. So Coach, while your A-E grading scale (and it’s application) is thoughtful, we’ll have objectivity next year rather than your rather subjective application of wisdom.

For all of you that state this “WTNY” sentiment will be around next year, maybe it will be with some fans.

However, if the ‘NY’ in ‘WTNY’ isn’t 2010-11, I’ll be on board with all of you who say Sid has to go. I just happen to think Sid is an underrated coach that is going to have the talent to make his system work next year.

By the way, this board has made me feel incredibly dirty uttering the words “next year”.

  15. whitefang 02/08/2010 at 5:42 PM #

“The great thing about this discussion is we will know definitively, next year.”
Perhaps YOU will know definitively next year. I know definitively now as do most rational State fans. Anyone who can watch this multi-year, trainwreck of a basketball program and see something positive coming out of it is delusional. My god, we’re 2-7 and dead last in the ACC, but beyond that please name an ACC school whose coach has achieved less success than SL. Heck UVa which was picked to be worse than us is freakin 5-3 and in 4th.
I really believe even Fowler would have to work hard to replace this staff with a worse one. I am having a hard time thinking of ANY coach at a major school who wouldn’t be an improvement.
Yeah that’s harsh, that’s mean, he’s “one of us”, that’s unfair, but unfortunately its probably true.

  16. tuckerdorm1983 02/08/2010 at 6:48 PM #

so coach13 are we really doomed? how many years of failure will be tolerated. We have another recruit besides Harrow and Brown committed and possibly another 5 star. It could be the begining. Time will tell and I say 2 or 3 years will be all he has left if he remains in the bottom. You have to admit this year is a hell of a recruiting class, espeically is CJ comes.

I believe I am as passionate of a STATE fan as there is…..my 2 kids are already brainwashed on how great STATE is!!! I, a while ago, learned not to get too high or low on the emotional roller coaster it is just not worth the stress.
However, why can’t fans get very high on the class coming in next year as a class that can push us in the top tier in the conference right away? Sendek had five straight mediocre season and then bammmmm, a freshman class with Hodge and Powell and we went from the bottom of the conference with many calling for Sendek’s job to top 3 in the conference and 5 straight NCAA’s.
So yes, a strong incoming class can take you from the bottom to the top tier and NCAA’s.

Wake did it a couple of years ago as well. And don’t be surprised if UVA doesn’t win more than 1 game the rest of the reg. season.

  18. JeremyH 02/08/2010 at 8:03 PM #

    can harrow or brown shoot?

  19. whitefang 02/08/2010 at 8:30 PM #

“And don’t be surprised if UVA doesn’t win more than 1 game the rest of the reg. season.”
I won’t be surprised, but they kicked our rears, and the chances of them losing all their games is certainly higher than the chance we’ll actually ever make it to #4 in the ACC this year.
But here’s the rub. We should get excited about an incoming class of high schools kids with a coaching staff that has finished 10th,12th,10th and appears headed for another 10th or worse finish? UVa has already fired the man who was ACC coach of the year during Lowe’s first year and now has won more ACC games with another coach than we’ll likely win with a 4th year coach. Sorry I can’t get excited about that. (by the way UNC and Duke have higher ranked classes and Wake and UVa are just behind us this year so we aren’t exactly pulling away in that dept).

well i’m finally seeing some emotion that matters come out of sid. too bad it was a childish rant about a nonexistent foul on a prayer shot from mays. but it was nice to see him get involved, when he seemingly isn’t involved for much of the games.

when he came in, i didn’t know what to expect… it was a very hectic recruiting process with nothing but dead ends.. then sid comes in. for most of us, this could qualify as a dream job.. well especially me. after a while i began to think he would take some grooming to become a NCSU/ACC/winning college coach. the years haven’t gone by all that quickly, the last two season’s to date have been particularly painful. finally, in his fourth year he’s finally acting like he cares.. and it comes in the form of a childish rant. maybe this is a wakeup call, i don’t know. i am growing tired of losing, especially when the team doesn’t appear to be developing at all.

i can’t help myself in joining in the conversation, but at this point all i really can do is hurry up and wait. last week i said this team is better than their record.. i meant that.. and still feel that way. the problem is they don’t play to their ability. i don’t think many of the guards we have right now would qualify for scholarships at any prominent programs.. they are below average and down right dumb. each year, i’m hopeful of a new guy to come in and take the job from javi.. but the years keep going by. i would never have that kid as my starter, there is no way. but he has improved. we’re stuck with him.. he puts alot of effort in..half of the time. but even i can go to podunct high school somewhere, usa and find a better point guard than this kid. i had high hopes that mays was going to be the pg, NOPE, he looks like a ten year old out there attempting to run the offense at times. degand, need i say more. he’s just not that good. which leaves us with nothing.

all this points to coaching to me! i love NCSU/SID/THE PLAYERS… i love the whole package, want them to be successful. but i’m just not seeing it.
