After finding multiple ways to lose leads and playing inconsistent basketball for much of the last month, NC State finally finished a game against Wake Forest Saturday, picking up a 14-point victory after dropping seven straight conference games.

NC State forced 23 Wake Forest turnovers (15 in the first half) and held down Ish Smith, forcing the senior guard to commit five turnovers and holding him to 12 points. Al-Farouq Aminu and Chas McFarland committed six turnovers each. The Wolfpack was able to score 18 points off those 23 turnovers.

“I congratulate NC State,” Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said. “I thought they played very well. They came out and set a certain tone and we didn’t adjust. Our offense put way too much pressure on our defense today. We held them to 40% but we had 15 turnovers in one half.”

Sidney Lowe said NC State’s transition defense, which only allowed eight fast break points, was key to shutting down the Wake Forest offense.

“If you allow them to run on you, they’re going to beat you. Their bigs run the floor very well. You have to stop the transition offense and we did a good job of that. We had deflections and were diving for the ball. As far as that aspect it’s probably the best defensive game we’ve played. Our kids were committed and it showed.”

Five players scored in double figures and the Wolfpack went 6 of 12 from behind the arc after struggling to make shots during the last seven games. CJ Williams came off the bench and poured in 12 points, hitting two three-pointers in a tw0-minute stretch to keep NC State’s lead above 10 points.

Williams, who has struggled throughout the year, said he’s continued to work hard.

“All week in practice I’ve been working on my shot and working on getting my confidence back and I was able to continue to shoot the ball,” Williams said. “Coach had confidence in me and I know if he has confidence in me I have to have confidence in myself.”

Lowe also credited Williams, among others, for being more verbal on the court and in the locker room, something he said helped NC State to reverting to the bad habits its developed during its losing streak.

“We were more energetic coming out,” Williams said. “Sometimes we were a little dead coming out of halftime. Guys were talking in the locker room and it kept us all focused on what we wanted to do. We all just stayed positive.”

Wake Forest shot 0 for 12 from behind the arc, something that hadn’t happened for the Deacons in 575 games. The last time an NC State opponent didn’t make a three-pointer was in 1990, when Maryland failed to do so.

Dennis Horner picked up his third double-double in the last four ball games, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Horner, who had never recorded a double-double before the Virginia Tech game Feb. 10.

Despite Horner’s performance on the glass, Wake Forest out-rebounded NC State 50-31 and pulled down 27 offensive boards (8 by Aminu). However, the Deacons could only manage 19 second chance points on those opportunities.

“They got on me about rebounding, because I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t rebounding,” Horner said. “They sat me down and talked to me about it, I took it to heart and I wasn’t going to let that stop me from playing so I’m coming out here tonight and trying to get as many rebounds as I can. ”

Tracy Smith led NC State with 14 points. Javi Gonzalez scored 11 points and dished out six assists while only turning the ball over twice. The Wolfpack had 15 turnovers but Wake Forest was only able to manage seven points off those miscues.

Senior guard Farnold Degand (13 points) said the win couldn’t have come at a better time for a team which had found so many ways to lose games during the last month.

“We’re more relieved than anything,” he said. “The last couple weeks we’ve been fighting and come out short on a few games. To pull it out today felt great.”

Wulfpack – and if were old enough you’ll see the similarities between this era and the Les Robinson era.

As far as I can tell, I’m guessing that right now in this conference – Duke, Wake, VaTech, UMd, Clemson and FSU are likely tournament teams. BC, Miami, UVa, UNC and us are likely not NCAA teams. GaTech is on the bubble.

We are 0-4 vs. those not likely at all to go to the tourney.

We are 3-5 vs. those likely to go the tournament…and keep in mind, those 3 wins were all outside of that “one or two possession” margins of victory.

If we could perform as well against the bottom half of the conference as we do against the top half – we’d be OK.

I don’t know – to me it looks like we’ve got an issue of intensity, effort and focus. We’ve had that same problem for 4 years – and I don’t think that reflects well on the staff.

I hope that next year brings us more consistency and a tourney bid.

Alot of hope here and hype, wait until our next game, sat at VTECH?
But great effort by our pack, and what was wake doing? Were they the 23rd ranked team yesterday?

But,who cares, i will take a win for these young guys anyday I hope El Sid will from this that defense can win and not offense. Shots will not always go down or be there and you have to do the little fundamental things, defense, rebound and hit free throws and you can win alot of games. The thought that a team can shoot 50% everytime out is ludacrious and to hear,”we did not hit shots!” is an absurd comment!
You have to have something to fall back on when your team is not shooting well. To shot well is a bonus not a necessity!!

But the rebounding was horrible yesterday. At one point, Wake has 20 offensive rebounds to our total 18 rebounds?? And when wake was down, time and time again, wake would pass up three pt shots(Ish Smith) and drive the lane.
To me, yesterday was a combination of good defense and horrible offense(wake),but we will take it!

Maybe El Sid will learn from this game and push for defense, rebounding and free throw shooting and there is still time to turn this season around with three to play and one acc t game!
All these teams:Vtech,Bc and Miami are beatable and our 5-12 for 6-11 game could be wake, florida state or virgina. It is possible to get to 18 wins and nit,but El Sid would have to do the right things:emphasis on defense, rebounding and free throw shooting and ball possession and perhaps run the break when a press is broken or push the ball faster up court.

We will see, but i seriously doubt it: the players won yesterday not EL Sid!!
It looks like he will return for 2010-2011

Question: anyone heard form Adam Gold from 850 the buzz?

  4. Wolfpack_1995 02/21/2010 at 1:46 PM #

Points about Defense are spot on. Sendek’s teams played defense all the time and IMO that kept us in more games.

Hopefully Sid can get his teams to buy into more defense all the time! We had a great game plan in shutting down Wake and the entire team bought into it.

Way to go for Horner to step it up and also Degand. This was sorely needed by them.

I will feel much better if we can close the season out strong. If we do not bring in Leslie I am happy bringing in another guard ala Bo Ingram. Leslie is likely one and done anyways.

Glad Sid and team got the win!

    Let’s move forward!

Great win for the ‘Pack. I’m hoping for the best and that a corner was turned, however, experience tells me this was just an example of the blind squirrel getting his occasional due.

It’s funny, on some other StateFansNation blogs, someone keeps deleting my posts about Sidney doing a good job in this game.

It’s because you are spamming at least 3 different threads with the exact same post. We got it the first time.

  8. NJpack 02/21/2010 at 2:45 PM #

It is amazing how competitive we can be when we get any type of solid contribution from the guards. If you follow that logic, then you really would think “wait until next year” when we have our best guard combo coming in since Fire & Ice.

Two of the next three games are definitely winnable, the coaching test is can they motivate the players to keep up this level of performance. It is not just the guys have to make their shots, the coaching staff is responsible for the psychological motivation to make guys believe in the system. What’s been disappointing with Lowe is that his motivational style seems to be “let the guys figure it out for themselves” vs. him and the staff guiding the players in the right direction.

We’ll see. It will be nice if we can end the season on some kind of winning streak.

  9. choppack1 02/21/2010 at 2:55 PM #

NJPack – I’m not sure that’s the case. I’d argue that the things that the kids have to figure out for themselves are the fundamentals…I think he’s probably doing a decent enough job of preparing our kids for what our opponent does.

Heck, like I said, if you think it’s just guard play at the heart of this problem look at our rebounding. Wake didn’t make a 3 last night – if they make 3 or 4 what does this game look like?

The bottom line – guard play isn’t our only glaring weakness…it’s just that our guards played good last night and Wake’s played awful. (I do think our defense had a lot to do w/ that though.)

  10. bradleyb123 02/21/2010 at 3:04 PM #

Wake wasn’t hitting from the outside. So we were able to Pack it in on the inside and make life tough for Wake there. Wake also missed a lot of open shots, even from point blank range. We played good defense and got enough rebounds to pull it out. And we hit some big shots when Wake threatened in the second half. But I think this win had more to do with Wake’s ineptitude than how great we played. We played it right, and turned Wake’s weaknesses into a game plan, so credit to Sid for that. But it was more Wake just not hitting shots.

  11. wolfonthehill 02/21/2010 at 3:46 PM #

I didn’t think we played 40 minutes by any means… we played an absolutely hideous brand of basketball for most of the first half… we caught fire from the 3-point stripe in the 2nd half, and that was that.

Far from a 40-minute effort… we were just out-sucked by Wake.

  12. wolfmanmat 02/21/2010 at 3:47 PM #

Consistency happens when you have talent and experience. Our team lacks both. Sid is doing a good job and is starting to get some talent.

  13. Wolfy__79 02/21/2010 at 4:10 PM #

whope90 sorry to have to do this to you but:

the next game is at miami. you did manage to get the day right

    @miami, @vt, bc!

and to correct something else, sidney does have a son! and he actually has been in contact with social services in some degree with a run in with the law a little while back. this is a response to an ill advised character assasination of our coach SIDNEY LOWE. lay off the cheap shots and stick to basketball.

and when referring to the “young guns,” try giving their recruiter a little credit. and also wouldn’t hurt to remember that they are mediocre at best at the top. while the underclassmen do show promise, sid is actually doing the best longterm favor for them with making them earn their minutes.. natural progression for “young guns,” not throwing them to the fire.

hwsnbn: sure he played good defense. his good defense also couldn’t compete defensively against superior athletic talent. so where’s that get us vs ACC foes, certainly not cutting nets down in conf tourney or beyond the sweet sixteen. he is an asst coach at best on a championship team. we were practice dummies for duke and unc-ch! was that not obvious.

i watched the replay last night, i wasn’t totally impressed with the type of play. but the team managed through it and won. closed the game out the way you are supposed to. you cannot expect a team who’s lost 7 straight conf games to pick someone apart, wins for us will be very blue collar for now. but they can win more this year, no doubt.

i don’t mean to disrespect anyone in here, but if you’re gonna take a cheap shot at someone.. how about being informed and staying within the lines?! the conversation will become much more productive!

  15. tjfoose2 02/21/2010 at 4:57 PM #

For you basketball guys, did we really play a full 40 minutes? Was it a case of us playing better than Wake, or Wake playing worse than us?

Legit question… I only watched the last 4 minutes so I do not know (funny, but up by 14 at the time, I honestly gave us a 50/50 chance to hold on for a win). From what I have read and heard, it doesn’t seem that it was our good play that won the game, rather, it was Wake playing as poorly as it has all season.

  16. packfan03 02/21/2010 at 5:01 PM #

I wish we could be out-sucked every night.

I definitely think there’s some validity to the aforementioned statement. However, it’s good to see our guys continue to fight hard game after game. It’s obvious that our guys are less talented than the majority of our competition, and with more help on the way, it’s hard not to be positive.

Look, I think we all know our team was never the cream of the crop in the ACC. But I also think that our guys really believe they can be. Sidney has somehow given them the confidence to believe (based on players post game interviews), and that truly is worth something given the talent we have.

  17. packfan03 02/21/2010 at 5:05 PM #

    tjfoose2,

Obviously, Wake playing poorly had a SIGNIFICANT affect on our success. They are a better team – more athletic, and had the best player on the court (Aminu). Upsets only occur when the more talented team struggles, or the less talented team puts out a remarkable effort. In this game, the more talented team just struggled.

  18. newt 02/21/2010 at 6:53 PM #

The main difference between this game and the losses was that “the Wolfpack went 6 of 12 from behind the arc.”

  19. 61Packer 02/21/2010 at 7:50 PM #

The main difference between this game and the losses was that the Wolfpack played 40 minutes of tough defense. Despite shooting only 40% from the field and allowing Wake 14 more FG attempts, we held the Deacons to under 35% shooting. Few teams are going to win on the road shooting as poorly as Wake did Saturday.

  20. Sw0rdf1sh 02/21/2010 at 9:01 PM #

I can agree with that 61. Me and a few guys were discussing the game today and our defensive pressure….very much like 1st half of Maryland…was great throughout the game. Stealing the ball….going after loose balls…(still not sold on O-rebounds)..that was a very good display of effort. That last steal from Ish was priceless.

  21. TOB4PREZ 02/21/2010 at 9:55 PM #

Sid and Co. are clearly righting the ship for their inevitable journey to the top of the ACC….. next year is a day closer.
Ryan Harrow + Lo Brown = Julius Hodge (ie- JOB SAVER), but they will be showing up a FULL SEASON BEFORE tJules came along to save Herb’s hide…. Sid will do in five seasons what it took Herb six to do. I can’t wait!
    GO PACK!

GREAT WIN for the LADY PACK TODAY AT UNC.

Do you folks STILL think that Jimmy V doesn’t have a hand in all this….?

Seriously, with our win and the Ladies, this was really a GREAT weekend….and it did NOT snow…

    GO PACK.

  23. fmack 02/21/2010 at 11:07 PM #

    Wasssup Fellow Wolfpacker?
It was a great win for the pack yesterday. I was pleased with the effort I noticed on the defensive end as some of you already noted. What I saw was some young players finally buying in to playing good defense. I saw the guards reaching in and trying to dig the ball out when Wake got the ball down low. I saw the players trying to be active on the defensive end. That was great! That’s what will win games.
What I’m concerned about is the how we will build on that effort. I think for Sid has to find a way to get these young men to play more aggressive. NO MORE PUNK BALL period! I say Dennis Horner stop trying to lay the ball up when you’re under the basket. DUNK the stinking ball.
I say to Richard Howell – tear the rim down everytime. We’ll stop and let the equipment guys fix it. Just make sure every opponent knows you mean business in the paint. We may not have the height of some these teams but we can be more intimidating. NO MORE PUNK BALL period! Let’s at least make a team think that when they see us they are not going to get easy layups. I’m not advocating hurting anybody I’m just saying make sure nobody gets an and-one on us. NOBODY!
Lastly guys I still think I smell something good cooking for both the bball and football programs. BTW, it took K about 6 or 7 years to get to the NC this is just Sid’s fourth. Maybe we can at least go deep into the ncaat in the next year or two. I’d call that progress- wouldn’t all of you?

“For you basketball guys, did we really play a full 40 minutes? Was it a case of us playing better than Wake, or Wake playing worse than us?”

^Wake played pretty awful, no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. However, State can be credited with a lot of that. Those saying the defensive effort was there throughout are dead on.

State came up with every loose ball, and even some Wake should have simply had. They got crushed on the boards, but came up with double digit steals and really frustrated Ish Smith and Wake. The guys, especially our guards were all over the place on defense it seemed.

It was 40 minutes of solid defensive effort, not necessarily beautiful basketball. And State hit some jumpers in the second half. Wide open shots that came within the flow of the offense instead of taking the first available shot (an open shot is not always a great shot). There were only a few bad shots taken by State yesterday. Usually we waste a 1/3 or more of our possessions on turnovers or otherwise bad decision making.

State was the better team yesterday, and I won’t say by default. Wake was flat out terrible, but State certainly had a hand in just how terrible they were. I’d say compare this game to the home game we had against the Holes … That night we “out-sucked” the Holes – there wasn’t a good team on the court. Yesterday though, State was the better team over Wake because of defensive effort.

  25. Wolfy__79 02/22/2010 at 2:19 AM #

i guess i can agree with wake being the “better” team athletically. that’s kind of clear. but it only boils down to one position, and that’s of course pg. but i can’t really say that i want an ish smith as my pg. he is terrible at the line, and as the coach odom pointed out.. he doesn’t have a consistent 3pt shot! so it would only be his playmaking ability that puts wake above us.. our forwards are just as good if not better in my opinion. aminu is good, but he’s not a game changer, IMO. i think the physical aspect of our players in general, have caused problems for all the teams we’ve played. it’s the mental aspect that catches up to us. md, uva. very good examples of the mental breakdowns. but i’ve seen on more than one occassion, good teams having problems atleast early on with our team. i don’t really know how to explain that however. i didn’t catch the live game, but got the replay. the offensive rebounds were noticeable, but it seemed like a situation where the ball went right back to the wake player. but in addition to that, we weren’t physical enough pulling ’em down. yeap, that’s boxing out 101. i actually credit horner helping out, to the “better” guard play. i saw him being vocal on the floor, hey that’s what i expect out of seniors. all in all, before i watched the replay.. i expect to see something a little better. the reality was it was kinda ugly. but that’s the team. w/out consistent floor leadership, that’s what you get. so yes it was ugly, but they worked hard for that win. i’ll take that! with so many of our losses being so close this year, i’d say that effort yesterday would have made a difference in almost all of those. i just try to remember this core of players hasn’t ever really been successful, so that may be where the lack of killer instinct is.. or the basic instinct to put opponents away. with our remaining games, i’d say we can beat each of those teams, home or away! i don’t expect to finish the season w/out a loss.. i try to keep in mind that these young fellas are still playing through some severe growing pains. if we can stick with improving on defense, the odds go up. the offense, it still seems there’s something missing. those spells we go through, plainly said are droughts. but there’s more to it, its like they stop playing together. that’s where i think horner can be the mvp. if we can run the O thru him then, not to shoot but to get others involved.. i think that can break the cycle. anyway, what a GREAT way for these kids to go into a week off. practices this week should be a little more productive than the last couple of weeks.

congrats to the ladies for taking down the holes!

and yes, i think jimmy v is a part of this. part of our multiple decade stink is kinda thanks to him. it seems the NCSU basketball program is hopefully finally moving past the last championship and onto the next era of REAL NCSU BASKETBALL (fingers crossed)!
