1 week ago: Mays sucks and should never play again- not an ACC guard
4 days ago: Mays has a role at the end of game for free throws, yea
Today: Mays is really starting to look like a starter!

10 weeks ago: Sid sucks we need to fire him.
5 weeks ago: Sid sucks he can’t coach
1 week ago: Sid has no idea what he is doing
Today: team had good effort, but sid still sucks and should be fired
1 week from now: Team really is developing, Sid still sucks, we should hire that Jay Wright guy
4 weeks from now: The team really has played well this year, Sid still sucks, team is doing well despite him
6 weeks from now: The team is playing above expectations and may be in line for post season play, Sid better make the postseason or he sucks again
8 weeks from now: What a finish to the year- ACC championship- first since, well a long time, Sid actually can keep his job another year

It would be nice for a change, just to comment on strategy, play of the team, etc. Leave the hate comments out please.

OK – I know you can play the “what if” game all day long, but… what if Wise had not made the end-to-end shot or Florida doesn’t make the 3/4 court prayer? All of a sudden State is 13-3 (I’m giving them the OT win at AZ) and a “good” team. They just beat then-ranked Fla St on the road and had a great shot at beating another ranked team at home. (That said, in the ACC you’re almost always playing a ranked team at least once a week.) State has shown not only streaks of good play but entire halfs, if not entire games. Different players are stepping up – Wood, Mays, Howell… The Pack outrebounded FSU and Clemson. State shot 80% FT today, and 82.9% against FSU. And with that they won one and almost won another. Too little too late for some, but today’s game was a great ACC finish with a nice run by the Pack. My glass is half full. The second half 🙂

Those are big “what ifs”. Javi, who many were ready to annoint as the next great ACC point guard, has been a non-factor in the last four games and hardly played today. That should be concerning. I’m glad to see Mays and Degand play well together, but we need more than that.

I am very encouraged by this team’s play this week. I also wish we did not have a 10 minute scoring drought in the first half. This team is winning me over, but as I said a couple of weeks ago, if we go something like 4-12 and are last place, forget it. We should do better than that this year. I think we are headed in the right direction.

having a looksee at our schedule.. it is very tough. after today’s game i see that NCSU can compete with all the upcoming games. i’m not sold on a last place finish now and was not when it came out! last season was certainly a case of too little too late. by comparing our team from the loss against md and the way we’ve played since arizona… i could make a pretty convincing argument that we are much better!!!

STRONG Effort in the Second Half Will Be The Story of This Game For Us…Good Defensive Pressure, Smart Offensive Playcalling, AGRESSIVENESS From Our BackCourt…

Javi/Mays (Depending On Who Is Playing Better), Degand, Wood, Howell, & Smith Looks Like the Best Lineup We Have Going Forward…On The Strength Of Having A Couple of Outside Threats, Two Good Rebounders, and Smiths Low Post Scoring…

One Thing We Haven’t Addressed Very Much Today Is Players Getting In The Lane and Scoring…We Seemed to Have Started the Season As Strictly a Post Team Through Smith…And Later Expanded to Extending Defenses Through 3-Point Shooting of Wood, Degand, Horner & Javi at Times…Next We Started to Have Players Like Degand Drive to the Basket…Finally, Mays, Degand, Wood Showed the Ability to Hit Mid-Range Shots & Floaters in the Lane…This Latest Development Coming Against Quality Competetion in FSU & Clemson…Im Not Sure What this Says For The Rest Of Our Season and The Various Issues We Face (SCORING DROUGHTS!!!!!) But, It Seems That We Are Making Good Progress…

Well, the AZ game could have gone either way. State had rallied and had AZ on their heels. Wise had 4 fouls and should have been out already, in OT maybe he’s out early. But the FLA shot would go in maybe 1 in 50, 1 in a 100 times. The point is that there are two games that easily could have gone in the W column, and the overall outlook for the team would have been different.

“Well, i am confused over the coaching down the stretch? down one we miss and do not immediately foul and then foul clemson’s best free throw shooter, then we call timeout under the opposite basket instead of pushing the ball and calling timeout?”

Well, Coach Lowe was screaming at the team to foul…we did foul, nothing was called…time is ticking…Clemson player gets the ball with Wood guarding him…he doesn’t want to foul because he has four…and finally we foul hard enough for the ref to call it…Roy had the same problem at the end of their game today.

Good point on the half vs full court….maybe…did Clemson press on that last possession? I don’t remember but if so, Degand had broken the press several times in the 2nd half and we had gotten easy looks so maybe that was the thinking? Then again, maybe not.

Clemson called that timeout, not State.

instead of playing the “what if” game, let’s play the “pattern” game. this is not the first game we have stunk it up in the first half and then played inspired and *almost* won it in the second half. the “what if” allows us to question how the other team responds when *not* up by 15-20 points. As for Florida and Arizona, “what if” we had guards that could lead us and close a game out for us. These types of last minute losses are just a repeat of last year. just because the games are close and end at the last minute doesn’t necessarily mean the winner ends up being a toss up. This isn’t dice we’re playing here. why do i feel like we’re in neutral until 11 months from now?

Sure, I feel some optimism – then I look at the schedule & realize there are still precious few wins sitting there waiting for us.

My optimism comes when we have Harrow & Brown in the backcourt, Wood on the wing, and Smith/Howell down low. That lineup is an NCAA tourney team.

And our game was virtually identical to unc-ch’s loss… down 20 in the first, rally back in the 2nd half, miss a 3 at the end… final scores 73-70 and 73-71… bizarre.
