Russell Wilson Discusses Future

Interesting comments from Russell. Something must have been said or asked about playing both sports professionally because Tysiac mentions Russell thinking he can be a Hall of Fame player in both sports. I have heard one story that suggests he could turn pro in baseball, pay his own way to school, and play college football next year here at NC State. That may not be realistic, but the story was used to describe how driven Russell is towards playing both sports.

But Wilson downplayed that concern (over financial issues and father’s health) Tuesday during his weekly news conference with reporters.

“It’s not a huge factor for me,” he said. “I know the Lord will bless me at the right time whenever it is, whether it’s in the spring time, whether it’s in the fall of next year or whether it’s the spring after that. So I’m not really worried about that. In terms of financial reasons, like I said, I feel like the right situation will happen at the right time.”

One of RW’s coaches told me that he’s adamant he will play both sports while in college (at least). It’s a family tradition, and he’s certainly capable to handle the work load.

Win or lose, RW is simply a phenomenal role model, and I wish him the absolute best. I just hope his decisions don’t hurt his chances in the pro’s for either sport.

I thought for sure he would quit football to focus on baseball next year. This article only diminishes that expectation slightly. As great as he has been for NC State football, it appears to me that his chances of excelling at the next level are kinda small (small stature, not such a strong arm for the NFL). If he wants success in MLB it seems the smartest move would be to concentrate fully on that.

The next Antwan Randle El? 😉

The best QB we’ve had since Philip Rivers. Way better than guys that only played football. As far as I’m concerned the kid has earned the right to do whatever he would like. Sometimes it’s not about the money.

I too thought RW was pursuing MLB next year. Would loved to see him another year under center but whole heartedly agree with the sentiment here. He should do what’s best for him. Class act all the way!!! All the best to you Russell!!

I have heard RW plans to return for football next season. In my opinion, that makes the most sense because he can still play his senior year of baseball at NCSU after his redshirt Jr year of football. Also heard the football staff thinks he has the chance to make it in the NFL (find that harder to believe, but it’s not impossible).

As I’ve said several times here, RW WANTS to play football. It doesn’t matter what others think he should do or what others think is best for him. He knows his own desires, talents, expectations, and limitations better than Joe Fan on some blog. The kid wants to continue to play college football. Let him.

RW has already decided he will be playing football for the ‘Pack next year. End of speculation.

Depending upon how he performs on the diamond this year, he’ll either be back for one more year of ‘Pack baseball, or be playing pro baseball next spring.

As for his NFL chances, look no further than the Miami Dolphins and Pat White. IMO, RW is a better overall QB than White. He certainly is the better passer.

I have a feeling our best QB is on the bench.

I beg to differ packalum. Coaches are always on the hot seat when they are not winning games. Why on earth (given that RW may play MLB soon) would TOB bench the best QB? That just does not make logical sense. Glennon may turn out to be better in the long run, but for right now I think most would agree we are fielding our best players.

“I have a feeling our best QB is on the bench.”

    He’s kidding.

You are not taking into account the development that comes with experience. Sure Mike won’t be as good as RW when he doesn’t have any experience.

Case in point, look who beat out RW his true freshman year…think RW wouldn’t have been better than Daniel Evans after the second game of that year? Probably more like the second quarter…

So you are saying that we have a quarterback with better attributes on the bench? A higher ceiling? That’s a little more debatable.

But right now we have the better QB on the field.

tj, I was also going to mention the Dolphins. There are probably teams out there looking for this type of QB who can run the Wildcat for them. I’m very impressed with the way RW can throw while he’s running. He can put some touch on it and float it with the flick of his wrist and drop it in pretty accurately or throw across his body well too. Some QB’s never learn how to put air under the ball much less while running full speed. RW may or may not have a long-term possibility in the NFL, but if he plays his last two years and continues to develop, there could be teams to give him a chance.

I think Russell is the better QB mainly because of his experience, but also because I don’t think our O-line is quite ready to protect a pocket passer like Glennon. Russell gives us other options when scrambling is needed. Glennon really can’t move like Russell (said Captain Obvious!)

Next year, maybe our O-line will be good enough to protect a guy like Glennon.

Having said all that, I’d like to see as much Glennon as possible the next two weeks. I don’t care if we lose the games. We need to get that guy more experience. Of course, we can play a Russell a LITTLE more in the last game (who is the opponent again? ;)) I really don’t want to lose that one. But thinking about the future, we need to get Glennon more reps in real games. We have no postseason now, so why not get him in there now?

  16. packgrad94 11/18/2009 at 9:16 PM #

Agree with needing to get more experience for Glennon. He clearly has a strong arm. Working to improve his decision making now may help next year if something happens and Wilson is gone…..or injured.

I’ve got an idea. Let Glennon play QB, and Wilson can play DB! I’m just sayin…

They hit pretty hard in the nfl and speed wise, college doesn’t compare. Hit that baseball for the Yankees. I guess my question here is if RW stays 2 more years will Glennon stick around also?

  18. bradleyb123 11/19/2009 at 6:05 PM #

Probably not, robzucc. But we have other QB’s that we’ve recruited. I’m sure we’ll be fine if Glennon were to leave. As long as we still have RW, I don’t really care if he does leave. I’m not convinced Glennon is all that great, although he did lead us on a TD drive against Clempson at the end. But probably against their second stringers.
