Football and Fishing

This entry from SFN’s forums is exactly what Jeff had in mind when the forums were started here. I am moving it here to make sure that everyone gets to see it. Many thanks to basspacker for this:

Doing a re-broadcast via YouTube of an episode fishing with Clemson Asst Football Coach Andre Powell. Powell is in charge of special teams and running backs. The show was filmed during last invasion of the Wolfpack in Death Valley. I was honored by getting to sit down next to the sidelines which is greatly different than my LTR seats in upper C-F.

After the game, Coach Powell and I hit Lake Hartwell for some bass fishing, along the way he talks about life as a college football coach, how he got started with a few tidbits thrown in about falling down while coming down the hill after touching Howard’s Rock (part three).

A couple side notes here, Coach Powell was on Bunting’s staff, where I got to see the downside of coaching as I was allowed to visit Powell the last couple weeks of Bunting rein, eating in team cafe, sitting in on last minute meeting with UNC OC and Special Team Coaches, greeting prospective recruits on their campus visit. Powell was and is good friend with Tom O’Brien, interviewed for his staff when he was let go at UNC, eventually being hired by Bowden at Clemson.

A similar show was planned this year featuring Toney Baker and defensive end Jeff Rieskamp who are avid bass fisherman. Time constraints with practice and alot of paper work with university media dept made it hard to get done. You’d be amazed how something as simple as taking a player fishing can be considered a NCAA infraction. We had everything cleared except TOB adding two a day practices and more game film watching. Hopefully it will happen post season.

Heres a link to the episode “Eye of the Tiger” with Coach Powell if interested. Its in 4 parts as YouTube only allows 10 minutes segments.
