ESPN Insider: Is Butch Davis on Notre Dame’s list? (Updated 4:45pm)

We are taking the entire quote from ESPN Insider

Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune first included UNC coach Butch Davis on his list of possible successors to Charlie Weis eight days ago, and Davis is still on the Trib’s updated list today — as one of the “favorites,” no less, behind Brian Kelly, Bob Stoops and Gary Patterson.
,br>

Could Davis really be under consideration by athletic director Jack Swarbrick? Yes, he’s always been known for tough defenses and he rebuilt the Miami program, but he’s 58, he had a lymphoma scare in 2007, and his closest tie to Notre Dame/the Upper Midwest is that he was the Cleveland Browns coach. (See how much we had to stretch?)

By all reports, Cincinnati’s Kelly would jump at the job if offered, so Swarbrick can use Kelly as a fallback and take a shot at the likes of Stoops and Urban Meyer (yes, we still think he will go there). Davis couldn’t possibly be higher than Kelly on Swarbrick’s list, could he? Because if everyone knows that Kelly would say yes, there’s no reason to go past him. The only way Swarbrick could screw that up is if he draws out the process and Kelly gets tired of waiting for an offer

Who knows if the Irish are ready for the Chief to bring some of that ‘Carolina Class’ to South Bend.

What if Bob Stoops leaves Oklahoma for Notre Dame?

With Butch’s relationships in that TexArkana region, wouldn’t Davis be a potential natural replacement for Stoops with the Sooners? Heck, Davis’ top recruiter – Black Santa (also known as John Blake) – is the former Head Coach of Oklahoma who was responsible for the recruits that delivered Stoops his National Championship. (Ironically over another embattled coaching icon, Bobby Bowden).

We’ve got an open conversation going on the entire college football coaching carousel at this link…and have actually been talking about The Chief’s potential fit at Notre Dame for a couple of days now (at this link).

4:45pm Update

Time to sing the Drifters’ old song for Butch:

    Don’t go, PLEASE STAY……
    Don’t go, PLEASE STAY……..

I’m beginning to like Carolina football!

I love Butch Davis. He has finally found a way for NC State to beat Carolina every year in football! 🙂

Well it’s official now. Weis has been let go.

This is going to get interesting!!!

For the record, I doubt they would hire Davis at this point. He hasn’t proven much yet.

Butch has built a team with tremendous defensive speed. That’s one thing that has to catch ND’s eye.

  5. VaWolf82 11/30/2009 at 7:04 PM #

Even if the Stoop’s rumor turns out to be false, I just can’t see ND dropping all the way down a list to BD.

  6. Daily Update 11/30/2009 at 7:25 PM #

Vawolf: What are you talking about? Everyone tells me that ND isn’t what it used to be as a program and that you can’t win there anymore. Point being that ND is obviously still one of the most attractive jobs in the country and I agree with you that they won’t have to go that far down the list. I would consider Butch a top tier candidate for a lot of jobs considering his success the last two years.

  7. VaWolf82 11/30/2009 at 9:57 PM #

They’re only still attractive for two reasons:

    1) Because of the contracts they give out.
    2) Because of their easy path to a BCS bowl.

Weiss’ recruiting (by the numbers) show that top kids still want to play for ND….but they want to play for a coach that wins.

As much as I dislike the golden domers, you have to respect their quest for excellence. You also have to respect the fact that the fans still come out in droves from all corners of the country. It truly is a national fan base. I said earlier that the program has become irrelevant. However, that can all change quickly with a stellar hire like Stoops or Kelly.

  9. LRM 11/30/2009 at 11:15 PM #

I think two main factors are playing into this.

Kelly will likely want to wait until after the (likely) Orange Bowl, and ND won’t allow the same scenario as with Meyer five years ago. Also, I know a lot of folks on here are high on Kelly, but to me he’s never seemed like a good fit for ND, because he’s basically Charlie Weis 2.0.

Bob Stoops seems like a perfect fit for South Bend. Beyond the fact that for the past decade Oklahoma has been solid on both sides of the ball, his defensive philosophy in particular will endear the ND faithful. Also, Oklahoma appears to be heading for a recession, which is only natural — and Stoops might realize if he couldn’t win it in ’03, ’04, or ’08, then he probably doesn’t have another one in him.

I can’t think of anyone better than Butch Davis to replace Stoops.

If so, I’m calling Terry Bowden to Carolina.

ok, i admit it, my only interest in all of this is the possibility that somehow butch davis leaves UNC in the lurch so that they are in complete disarray for a couple of years

  11. StateFans 12/01/2009 at 12:04 PM #

I think I would rather have Butch Davis in Chapel Hill than Terry Bowden.

  12. bradleyb123 12/01/2009 at 2:55 PM #

Any word on Kendall Moore’s commitment to ND possibly wavering now that Weis is out? Word is he was at the State-Carolina game last weekend.

  13. NCSU84 12/01/2009 at 3:36 PM #

I for one would like to see Butchie stay at UNC. Let’s face it, when he was at the U, the atheletes were so good he did not have to do much coaching – just toss the ball out and let them play. His head coaching in the NFL was a complete flop (hence, he was not offered another NFL job). Butchie really hasn’t proven anything despite the media (and UNC) hype. So let him stay in Chapel Hill. We can count on more wins if he stays.

  14. ADVENTUROO 12/01/2009 at 4:47 PM #

TO quote from the NOW politically INCORRECT Uncle Remus tales….

“Please, please, Brere Fox…..DON’T throw me into that Briar Patch…..”.

I predicted in a previous post that Saturday’s seemingly embarassment for BD would result in a raise and/or contract extension.

Little did I suspect that the Mighty (but now impotent) ND would be the driving force.

Dick Badour is already on the phone getting pledges….the “fix” is in….BD will get his CUT from Saturday’s fiasco.

    GO ND….DON’T OFFER BD A LUCRATIVE CONTRACT….

    This is really funny….

  15. Sam92 12/02/2009 at 11:32 AM #

maybe UNX is in a tight spot here – if butch leaves, it disrupts their program, probably for a couple of years

if butch stays – TOB owns him, so it’s good for us!

  16. bradleyb123 12/02/2009 at 12:47 PM #

Sam92, I’d like to believe that TOB owns Butch. But we won’t keep beating them forever. Carolina could improve on offense and be pretty awesome next year. And the game is in Kenan Stadium.

I’d prefer Butch to leave, and soon! I’d rather their program sink into disarray than for TOB to finally lose to Butch. That could be seen as a changing of the guard!
