Carolina Class: How Will Butch Davis React? (Updated 1:30pm)

In the first video – just one of many examples of Carolina Class exhibited on the Carter-Finley turf on Saturday afternoon – Greg Little barks and taunts an injured Jarvis Byrd. Many posters on other message boards say that it appears that Little spits or feigns a spitting action on the injured Byrd.

In this next video, UNC’s Marvin Austin shows off his ‘cool guy’ look after equaling Little’s 0-3 record vs NC State. In his comments, Austin echoes the comments of most from the Tar Heel camp that Carolina just played very poorly and that is why the Heels lost. (Newsflash to the Tar Heels — I saw most of your games this year — you played this way A LOT more often than you played as you did against Virginia Tech.)

Austin comments that the crowd wasn’t very loud and he expected more of the atmosphere. I would like to ask Marvin how in the hell he would know? It would have been next to impossible for any human to hear anything over the sound of his own voice with as much yapping and jawing and talking in which he engaged on Saturday. We may just need to go pull a little more video from Saturday to help make our point more visually.

    No taunting called either.

It will be interesting to see how Butch and the league react.

That’s really shocking. I also noticed a bunch of UNC guys barking at our offensive unit once we took our last knee. How stupid do you have to be?

wow, what a stud! a 200+ pound upperclassman really owned our FR 180 pound DB, really something to be proud of….i sure as heck would be pumped about that. way to recruit the classy boys ole butch slap.

“I also noticed a bunch of UNC guys barking at our offensive unit once we took our last knee. How stupid do you have to be?”

Go ask UCLA. They called a timeout after USC took a knee so USC threw a touchdown pass on the next play. I personally find that hilarious.

Unfortunately it will be handled by both the league and UNX the same way it always is, by ignoring it. Sports writers will not cover it, and it will only be noticed by us.

  7. StateFans 11/29/2009 at 2:45 PM #

^ Does it show Brown, #12, going off on our guys after the game ended and having to be pulled towards his locker room? The UNC-ch fan sitting behind me was riding Brown the whole second half b/c he could not cover anyone and talked trash the whole game. He was embarrassed.

Little is a POS. He is a talented athlete, but this tough guy thug act that is so widespread literally makes me sick and I will never respect an athlete with this type of behavior – even if they play for State. But the reason I hate Carolina is the snobbish attitudes of their FANS. I don’t really blame the fans for Butch Davis tolerating and promoting the cocky thug act. But I would still hate the fans (and therefore the team) even if the team consisted of nothing but choir boys.

Why would Austin expect the crowd to be louder? The crowd isn’t supposed to be loud when hes playing.

  13. BamaPack 11/29/2009 at 7:03 PM #

Little is a physical specimen but is also “short bus” special.

The Greg Little play was absurd. I rewound it for the uncch-fan wife… she had no defense for it, which is unusual for her. The fact that the ref obviously saw it (as he comes running to Byrd at the end of the clip) and called nothing is inexcusable.

The difference to me was that, when our players did something great, they’d celebrate with their teammates as they ran off the field. When uncch players did something (or even when they didn’t, for God’s sake), they woofed AT us… taunting, trash talking… and it should’ve been called.

On another (but related) note… the late hit call on Yates was BS. His last step before getting his lights turned out was inbounds. But whatever…

  15. wolfonthehill 11/29/2009 at 9:16 PM #

Just went back and watched a highlight video that someone put together…

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbb7vh_nc-state-unc-highlights-112809_sport

Check out Greg Little at the 7:15 mark and at the 9:18 mark. An extended muscle flex on the first one (LOOK AT ME!!!!!!… something I saw flagged for unsportsmanlike a week ago), and more woofing in our players’ faces on the second one… again not called.

Someone please find a single incident yesterday where a player in red yapped at a uncch player. Just one.

  16. wolfonthehill 11/29/2009 at 9:23 PM #

And on further review, since we’re on the topic, our players as a rule did everything possible to avoid finishing hits late out of bounds… there are numerous times (check the 1:25 mark of the above video for one example in this set of highlights) when we had a guy in the grasp and probably COULD have gotten away with a cheap shot (which uncch did repeatedly), but we held off and simply took our hands off the guy & let him go.

Overall, I’m happy with the KIND of players we have… their heads are on straight, and it’s easy to be proud of them. I’d hate to have to pull for Little, Austin, Brown, the dude who ran the reverse for a TD, or any of a number of other guys on that squad who live up to the “thug” name proudly.

Seems like one Carolina fan is pretty bitter, and is of course making the usual excuses:

    The Aftermath

“Enjoy your win. I won’t even mention how tainted it is. Have fun watching UNX in our bowl game while you sit at home and worship TOB. Heels still 8-4 with a bowl game coming up. Tob still doesn’t have a winning season at NXSU yet. Video of State fan assaulting S&P will be up by Friday.”

This is a main blog entry, not a comment, BTW.

    To him, I say this:

  18. ncsufan13 11/29/2009 at 10:26 PM #

^ Nothing sounds sweeter than the irrational sputtering of distraught Carolina fans.

That guy is just getting his inner Matt Doherty on.

    I love it.

Fans will be fans as the last couple month’s posts to SFN demonstrate. However I personally find some things to be over the line. Same goes for play on the field. There is a place for intimidation (especially through “clean” but aggressive play). In my opinion there isn’t a place for obvious grandstanding like the Little incident. I have no issue with the play but I have problems with the taunting and the lack of actions by the officiating crew after those actions. Like when Amato coached State I find the posturing to be excessive. I have NO doubt this comes directly from the coaching staff. Both in who is recruited and the behavior that is considered acceptable.

  21. Alpha Wolf 11/30/2009 at 8:59 AM #

Good point, ’57, but at the same time, there is a far different standard for a player on the field representing his school than there is for some guy who is frustrated on the Internet.

  22. triadwolf 11/30/2009 at 9:00 AM #

What really pisses me of is the memory of one of our running backs (TB as I recall) being flagged for saluting the crowd in honor of our troops after a TD and one of our defensive linemen being flagged for basically pumping his fists after a sack. The latter was a huge penalty in a close game. Call the games any way you like, but call them consistantly and fairly for all teams!

  23. 66pack 11/30/2009 at 10:04 AM #

4in 12–in a game against s carolina in 74 or 75 Holtz did the same.usc called timeout with state having big lead and time running out.it was especially great then.

  24. boonami 11/30/2009 at 10:07 AM #

I thought I was watching Miami play with all the thug ball that was going on. I so wanted someone to pummel Yates when he did that arm lift wave thing when he made a good play. When RW made a play, it was a nice modest celebration. With Yates, you would have thought he’d won the National Championship with all his antics.

  25. whitefang 11/30/2009 at 11:24 AM #

The thug play by Little (and others) really pissed me off. At the same time I am one that doesn’t believe that the officials will ever be able to call this consistantly. It is more purely subjective judgement and context related than any other call they have to make. Therefore short of anything physical or a delay of game they shouldn’t be calling it at all. The coaches and administration of the schools should be providing the “sanctions” against players who engage in this kind of behavior.
Of course it can be said that most schools would overlook this kind of behavior and you would be right – except if the media did their “job” plays like this would be all over the sports. The negative PR and resulting consequences to the schools represented by this kind of crap would be enough that the administration, if not the coaches, would come done on this stuff. Look at the reaction to the University of New Mexico and its women’s soccer player who led every news story for a week.
Now Greg Little should be suspended and miss the bowl game if UNC athletics has any integrity. Even if it doesn’t (and I think that is a pretty good bet) if this had been featured on NC TV station sports segments, as it should of been, they would have gotten some “integrity” really quick over in Chapel Hole. Statements would have already been issued condemning the actions and disciplinary procedures would have been taken. In my opinion this is how this kind of behavior should be handled.
    Yeah I know I’m dreaming.
