10/15/2005: Letter to the Wolfpack Nation from NCSU Director of Athletics Lee Fowler

Raleigh, NC – Dear Wolfpack Fans:
I know this is a time of great frustration and disappointment for all of you who care deeply and passionately about Wolfpack football. As Athletic Director, I can say that we all feel badly about losing–our coaches, our players and our staff, as well as our thousands of fans.

As I watched our fans streaming out of Carter-Finley Stadium after the third quarter of the Clemson game, I felt the same sense of sadness, disappointment, and frustration that many of you were experiencing. As you can imagine, our coaching staff and student-athletes were even more keenly affected than you or I. They dedicate countless hours to building a program and want to win so badly– in large part, for you, our fans.

When Coach Amato’s appearance on the jumbotron was met with boos and jeers from the crowd, I was amazed by the irony of it all. I thought, if it weren’t for the excitement that Coach Amato has generated for our entire program (and to which our Wolfpackers have generously responded), we might not even have a jumbotron, or a Vaughn Towers or a Murphy Center–facilities that are the finest in the nation.

Yes, we do now have premier facilities, but it still takes time for those facilities (and all other parts of a top program) to take effect. It’s just in the past couple of years, or even less, that we now enjoy competitive facilities that other top programs have experienced for years.

I am asking you to support Coach Amato and our team at this key time in our season. Maybe there was a time in your life when a friend, or boss, or a family member stood by you when you were struggling. They stood by you with an attitude of patience and perseverance. I’m asking you to extend that same gift of support to our coaches and student-athletes, to help us be part of the solution.

I ask you, our partners, and those who have invested so much in our football program, those of you who love NC State, to resist the urge to criticize, to become doubters and faithless about our program. The support you give now, when it is needed most, may well determine the outcome for the rest of the season.

Let’s rally around NC State and our coaches and team as only our Wolfpack nation can do. Let’s refuse to give in to cynicism and pessimism. At the time we hired Coach Amato, he was asked to lift a very heavy weight–to lead us to national prominence. Let’s believe he will do that. Champions are born out of adversity. We need your loyal support now.

Sincerely,
Lee Fowler, Director of Athletics

Is this October 15 or November 15?

    Does it really matter?

  2. 66pack 11/15/2009 at 9:23 PM #

And this weekend unc beats #14 miami and as a bonus gets BARNES.

    WHATS WITH THESE LOUD ADS?

Let’s say that Fowler never gets fired for whatever BS reason. Are we capable of hiring a good football or basketball coach if we use a search firm? Would a search firm be used for a basketball coach? Is word out amongst prospective future coaches that a coach cannot succeed with the current administration and climate? I’m not saying that it is, I’d like to know what others think.

  6. Avid109 11/15/2009 at 11:06 PM #

Say, maybe Fowler still has that letter saved on his computer. If he does, then all he has to do is change the date and the name of the coach and then he can send it out to the lunatic fringe fans.

On a serious note, will our athletic program ever field championship-caliber teams again? Until Fowler is gone, I seriously doubt it.

  7. packof81 11/15/2009 at 11:23 PM #

Russians say the fish rots from the head down. NCSU will not field even a decent team until Fowler is gone. And Fowler will not be gone until NCSU has leadership with the will to get shed of him. The Sleazely scandal shows just how corrupt the hiring process is at NCSU. So I wouldn’t hold my breath.

So how does the baseball team look this year. Mabey we can enjoy some wins for a change.

“Champions are born out of adversity.”

But they are not born out of stupidity.

Really. Has NC State Athletics gotten to be nothing but an ol’ boys club where throwing money around and getting names on facades is top priority, results be damned?

I cannot believe that people at the top of the donor ladder would pour money into an athletic program that performs so poorly. UNLESS…there was an ulterior motive.

That has to be the explanation. There has to be a few top donors that honestly don’t care about performance…they care because their names are on virtually every athletic facility we have (DESPITE the fact that some of them have NO connection to the University other than their donations).

It’s just all stupid and unfortunate. If everyone here got together and decided that we wouldn’t give anymore, it wouldn’t matter. The top donors have more than enough to cover that. It’s like a foundation supported by the Federal Government. Yeah, we’ll take donations, but if they dry up, that’s OK…we’ve got a bottomless pit of money that makes sure that we keep going and our golf buddies stay in places of power.

I apologize. I am in no means a socialist, and fully believe that, if you are successful, you are certainly entitled to spend your money in any way you see fit, and normally I am very appreciative of what these wealthy people have done.

BUT…when that liberty crosses over the line and you start to be able to use your money to dictate how an organization representing hundreds of thousands of people is run, outside of COMMON SENSE, and what incompetents it keeps as managers/executives, without regard to results, it’s time to speak up.

I think the rank-and-file of NC State followers are being held hostage by a handful of vain people who’s personal interests take precedence over the good of NC State University and its athletic program. I am more than willing to listen to opinions in the contrary, as I hope I am wrong. In the meantime, I continue to lean towards ending my financial support for a program that underperforms and does not appreciate my sacrifices of money and time.

I thought there was supposed to be some surprise announcement coming out of the athletic department this summer? wasn’t there talk of this on this blog about a shake up in the near future? anything? it just died out?

    from Alpha Wolf
    http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2009/04/03/ncsu-official-denies-fowler-rumors/
“Folks, this story has real legs, and this is not the end of it as far as we know. There have been off-the-record comments by those that do know what they are talking about that indeed something is going on. What this isn’t is an April Fool’s joke, or a message board rumor that got out of control. It is not something that the writers at Statefans Nation or any other blog dreamt up, made up, misinterpreted or misconstrued. If anything, many of the folks here are being very careful to only point out palpable facts.

The bottom line: too many people in authority, in the know and close the to the situation are indicating as much — level-headed people who most definitely do not fit the stereotype of a mouth-breathing fan sitting in his mama’s basement stirring up trouble.”

so what ever happened? This just go away?

  11. ncsufan13 11/16/2009 at 2:48 AM #

^ I’m pretty sure Lee Fowler drop-kicked whoever started that rumor and then went back to his duties as Athletic Director, which is basically bathing in his swimming pool or hard earned wolfpacker dollars.

  12. Rick 11/16/2009 at 8:54 AM #

From what I have been able to gather, Fowler’s golfing buddy backed him which saved his job. That is about all I know.

  13. 66pack 11/16/2009 at 9:02 AM #

The WPC leadership supports THE AD and says to hell with the membership.

  14. Alpha Wolf 11/16/2009 at 9:30 AM #

wbnation: look at the changes that happened in the BOT over the summer and do the math.

  15. DRW 11/16/2009 at 9:56 AM #

    Who is this ‘golfing buddy’?

  16. statered 11/16/2009 at 10:06 AM #

McQueen was one of the guys leading the charge to get rid of Fowler and we all know what happened to him….

As to the golfing buddy comment – is this Murphy or Dail or someone else? I know from folks on the fund raising side of the university that some of these big donors think of NCSU as their little fiefdom and more important than actual results is their ability to get folks at the university to do what they want. In some cases it has been to the point of the donor just screwing with people for their own entertainment.

Thank you for your support and comments. God bless, and Go Pack!

This morning’s ‘Latest News’ on gopack.com:

“#15 Men’s Soccer Topped in ACC Championship, 1-0”
“Volleyball Comes Up Short at Maryland”
“Rifle Falls to Ole Miss, TCU”
“Clemson’s Spiller Leads Tigers to 43-23 Victory”

The WBB game didn’t make the cut for latest news; a 30 year-old ACC championship in football did. I guess we needed SOME positive news. Not a great weekend (decade?) for NC State athletics.

  19. DRW 11/16/2009 at 10:45 AM #

Just got an email asking me to donate more money to the University. Yeah right. I’ll send a check right out.

  20. WolftownVA81 11/16/2009 at 1:49 PM #

Every WPC and Alumni Association letter I get asking for money are being answered with the same four word response. I scrawl across them all “When Fowler is gone”. Thats all, no other explanation is given. I guess when they get enough of them someone will figure out what needs to be done.

  21. kyjelly 11/16/2009 at 2:25 PM #

I got the same letter asking for money ,I also have 2 kids in school a jr and a sr both did not attend the football or the basketball games this whole situation stinks.

  22. BassPacker 11/16/2009 at 2:28 PM #

“little fiefdom”…wow, I had to look that one up…

  23. Alpha Wolf 11/16/2009 at 2:40 PM #

Woooooo doggies! I been thinkin’ ’bout cipherin’ y’all another letter real soon!

  24. old13 11/16/2009 at 3:12 PM #

BTW it does no good to contact Woodward to effect a change in AD. I already have – he advised he will leave that one for the next chancellor. BUT maybe he’ll keep all the letters and emails and turn them over to the next chancellor, who knows!

  25. Lunatic Fringe 11/16/2009 at 7:24 PM #

    Dear Lee Fowler,

I don’t blame fans for leaving given the quality of play and the fact that the game is traffic situation is an absolute joke.

On an unrelated note, I have been torn all day on what was my favorite part of the game on Saturday:

    (1) The no artificial noisemakers or whistles announcement in 4th quarter that led to a LARGE contingency throughout stadium sarcastically whistling in unison

    OR

    (2) The fact that I could hear someone on the OTHER SIDE OF THE STADIUM yell at refs about a hold call
