10/15/2005: Letter to the Wolfpack Nation from NCSU Director of Athletics Lee Fowler

Raleigh, NC – Dear Wolfpack Fans:
I know this is a time of great frustration and disappointment for all of you who care deeply and passionately about Wolfpack football. As Athletic Director, I can say that we all feel badly about losing–our coaches, our players and our staff, as well as our thousands of fans.

As I watched our fans streaming out of Carter-Finley Stadium after the third quarter of the Clemson game, I felt the same sense of sadness, disappointment, and frustration that many of you were experiencing. As you can imagine, our coaching staff and student-athletes were even more keenly affected than you or I. They dedicate countless hours to building a program and want to win so badly– in large part, for you, our fans.

When Coach Amato’s appearance on the jumbotron was met with boos and jeers from the crowd, I was amazed by the irony of it all. I thought, if it weren’t for the excitement that Coach Amato has generated for our entire program (and to which our Wolfpackers have generously responded), we might not even have a jumbotron, or a Vaughn Towers or a Murphy Center–facilities that are the finest in the nation.

Yes, we do now have premier facilities, but it still takes time for those facilities (and all other parts of a top program) to take effect. It’s just in the past couple of years, or even less, that we now enjoy competitive facilities that other top programs have experienced for years.

I am asking you to support Coach Amato and our team at this key time in our season. Maybe there was a time in your life when a friend, or boss, or a family member stood by you when you were struggling. They stood by you with an attitude of patience and perseverance. I’m asking you to extend that same gift of support to our coaches and student-athletes, to help us be part of the solution.

I ask you, our partners, and those who have invested so much in our football program, those of you who love NC State, to resist the urge to criticize, to become doubters and faithless about our program. The support you give now, when it is needed most, may well determine the outcome for the rest of the season.

Let’s rally around NC State and our coaches and team as only our Wolfpack nation can do. Let’s refuse to give in to cynicism and pessimism. At the time we hired Coach Amato, he was asked to lift a very heavy weight–to lead us to national prominence. Let’s believe he will do that. Champions are born out of adversity. We need your loyal support now.

Sincerely,
Lee Fowler, Director of Athletics

That makes me sick. How long until something similar is released?

Thank you so much for posting this. So Lee, how long is long enough?

4 years later and we are in the same position…….and the administration, AD, and board could care less.

    It is sickening.
My response to Fowler….four years later:
NCSU Football has five more seasons, starting with 2010. If it produces three losing seasons during those five years, this WPC donor in the top 10% of all WPC donors is washing his hands of the whole mess and walking away.
Life is too short to waste it on anything which should energize me and fill me with pride, but instead creates stress and unhappiness.

You guys make this shit up? It’s about as believable as Backing the Pack’s fake interview from TOB the other day.

But sadly, I’m guessing this one is indeed real… which speaks volumes. It’s exactly what we’d do if we wanted to parody him…

  7. StateFans 11/15/2009 at 4:45 PM #

We obviously need an indoor practice facility. You just wait til next year when we lose most of the starters on the offensive line and our entire group of four starters from our horrible defensive line.

Nothing satisfies y’all — we have a jumbotron, what else could we ask for?

  10. Pack Mentality 11/15/2009 at 4:57 PM #

When was the last time we had 3 consecutive losing seasons? Actually make that 4 including Chuck’s last season.

  11. wolfonthehill 11/15/2009 at 4:59 PM #

So seriously – when I first read this, I thought it was a parody… it was as ludicrous (yet predictable) as Backing the Pack’s fake presser with TOB the other day.

And that’s what’s so sad… so unacceptable… so unbelievable… that we can’t make up a version of Fowler more absurd than reality. We couldn’t do better than this if we tried… his own words are his own damnation.

So really – AMATO is responsible for the Jumbotron?

Not the fans and boosters who donated money… even over the strenuous objections of spouses at times?

Funny – I thought WE had donated the money that paid for the stadium upgrades. Shows what I know… turns out Chuck donated the money & built it with his own two hands.

    Comical.

  14. Wulfpack 11/15/2009 at 5:13 PM #

It’ll be alright, guys. Just wait ’till next decade.

  15. tobaccordshow 11/15/2009 at 5:19 PM #

ANd our jumbotron sucks too. When’s there going to be accountability for that?

Texas has a sweet jumbotron… that must really be the reason why they’re able to win national championships…

  16. Pack Mentality 11/15/2009 at 5:20 PM #

The way I see it, next year a losing season means he’s gone for sure. 8+ wins means he stays. The gray area will be 6 or 7 wins. If this happens he will not be fired but much of the fan base will want him gone. This seems like it has happened before, and it ends badly for the NC State fans regardless of where you stand on the issue.

  17. ncsufan13 11/15/2009 at 5:23 PM #

Since Amato is supposed to be responsible for the Jumbotron maybe we should just replay games from when Philip Rivers was QB on it to give the fans something to watch while we’re being destroyed.

I have edited my diatribe only to say I think Lee Fowler stinks.

I am also (as I do every year) sitting here thinking about how much I wish to contribute to all my charities, interests, passions. I am thinking my model railroad societies, animal shelters, children hospitals, and other interests may each get a larger chunk and I will send the Student Aid at NC State just enough (bare minimum) to maintain my LTRs.

This university’s athletic department is a joke, run by clowns.

PLEASE … START OVER … EVERYONE HAS BEEN GIVEN TIME…they have proven that they are incapable of performing…

All the while, down the street both RIVALS ARE GETTING BETTER AND BETTER…

WHY? THEY HIRE PERFORMERS and THEY TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS…

NCSU athletics is a joke…of the entire NCAA

  20. old13 11/15/2009 at 6:43 PM #

THAT’s when I quit giving $$$ to anything NCSU.

Somebody please wake me when there is actually some new news about Wolfpack athletics. All I see anymore is the reporting of another failure in a program, and all the Wolfpackers’ anguishing and gnashing of teeth that follows.

“4 years later and we are in the same position”

BS…we are not anywhere close to being in the same position…we’re a lot worse off than we were 4 years ago.

  22. bravo 11/15/2009 at 8:15 PM #

Someone asked when the last time was we had 4 straight losing seasons. Well, let me tell you. It was the early 50s. Also, we lose out (which we probably will) it will be the first time NC State football has ever gone 1-7 in conference play. They’ve gone 1-6 (and even 0-6), but never 1-7.

Ah, good times at CF. When is enough……enough? I’m starting to lose interest in all NCSU athletics. I’m going the game at VT, but only to visit with my son. I certainly don’t expect the game to be competitive. I will not make the 4 hour drive to Raleigh to see either FB or BB until I see some real change in the program – starting at the top with you Mr. Fowler.

  25. ncsslim 11/15/2009 at 8:44 PM #

Not that it dramatically matters, but the Jumbotron situation was a total debacle. As we were getting our asses handed to us, once again, Chuck shows up lecturing us how to be “good fans”, i.e., when to cheer, etc,,,, It wasn’t merely Chuck’s presence, it was the obnoxious degrading message at a most ironic time. Good riddance, Chuck. You’re one lucky man given your personality and (lack of) talent. Maybe I’ll live to see you retire with you ex-boss (Fowler, not Bowden; Bobby’s earned his keep) in South Fla, if they’ll still let your arrogant ass down there.
