What are ACC bloggers saying?

At least we aren’t the only ones with problems. Let’s look at what a Clemson and Florida State blog are writing about.

Swinney reportedly overrides Napier around 15-25 plays per game, primarily taking control in the red zone and during critical situations including calling almost all of the last 3 drives of the game against Maryland

On the final offensive play against Maryland, Billy Napier called a play and Dabo signaled in a different one. Unfortunately, Swinney forgot to change the protection scheme to match the new play and as a result a blitzing LB was given an unobstructed path to the QB. The play ultimately resulted in a sack and fumble and killed the Tigers chances of kicking a game tying FG.

Swinney, who Vic Koenning called “Goat Boy” for his tendency to offer players that were not Division I caliber, is also so motivated to prove that these players can play that Swinney will play them knowing that they do not give the team the best chance to win. Napier, who prefers running I-Formation and utilizing TEs which fit with Clemson’s strength, often clashes with Swinney who wants to run 3 and 4 WR sets in part to prove that the wide receivers that Swinney coached previously can actually play.

Napier didn’t attend the post game press conference following the Maryland Game due to his frustration at Swinney for killing the momentum and botching signals in crunch time and also to show that Swinney is the coach actually in charge of Clemson’s offense.

Clemson’s 2-3 record has Swinney panicking and riding the players and coaches extremely hard. Swinney’s temper got the better of him on a couple of occasions during last Wednesday’s practice, resulting in two face-to-face altercations with Napier. Coaches had to step-in and separate the parties prior to it escalating. Woody McCorvey recently was forced to step-in and council Swinney on controlling his temper.*

Under this scenario, Bowden would receive only the $1 Million bonus for the lifetime achievement (see linked article above). Since Bowden would not be allowed to make any personnel or other important decisions, he would obviously not be promoting Amato to replace Andrews as defensive coordinator.

On the other hand, Bowden has a lucrative deal available to him should he elect to simply walk away at season’s end. In addition to the $1 Million bonus, I believe the boosters will offer him as much as $3 Million in extra compensation, possibly more, for him to just go away. How much does Bowden really care about money?. How much does his family care about money? Some say a lot because he allegedly lost a good bit of money in his son’s felony investment scheme and allegedly lost some more in some condos gone bad along Florida’s Emerald Coast during the real estate crash. If his posturing is merely a money grab, he’ll take this option.

I am told that Bowden is digging in and is refusing either option. Obviously, his obstinacy is not making this situation easy. I told you this could get ugly.

So now we wait.

The major hangup is still Chuck Amato. Bowden’s loyalty is again causing him problems. It’s served him well at times throughout his carer. Here however, if he decides that his loyalty to Chuck Amato is more important to him than Florida State, his Florida State coaching career will be over. He wants to name Amato as the next defensive coordinator. Florida State simply will not allow that, barring an absolute disaster miracle. And this if Florida State’s administration.

I always knew Dabo was an idiot. I guess the Klempson guys got stuck with him b/c he finished so strong and they were afraid of getting turned down by multiple coaches. I still think that could be a good place to be with the right coach.

The FSU situation is getting down right stupid. I used to like and respect Bowden a lot, but his refusal to leave is taking its toll on my respect for him.

This is bad news for the national image of the ACC: it means more Wake Forest and Boston College teams and their sparse fans in ACC championship games and (occasionally) the Orange bowl.

Then again, should these schools replace these two HCs with competent coaches NC State slides down to 5th or 6th in the Atlantic permanently i fear.

I wasn’t impressed with the Dabo hire and thought it reeked of desperation. Dabo was part of the staff that ultimately got Bowden fired. If they didn’t perform well enough to keep Bowden around, what would make anyone believe that they’d do better without him?

Also, if I’m not mistaken, this is Dabo’s second run in with an OC. He immediately fired the one Bowden had when he took over as coach. Did he promote Napier? That’s what I don’t remember.

The best hire for Clemson at the time was Tubberville. He’d have been the second coming of Danny Ford for them. I’m just glad they weren’t smart enough to make that hire.

I fully believe that the FSU situation is going to get quite ugly. It’s one thing when a legend rides off into the sunset and the school respects his wishes (ah la Dean). No one loses face and everyone wins (to a certain extent). It’s an entirely different thing when that legend is forced out before he’s ready to leave, which is what is happening.

Brett Farve: I still want him to play, but everyone needs to shut up about it.

Bobby Bowden: I still want him to coach, but everyone needs to shut up about it.

In short, the media needs to find real stories and not rehash the same thing on every show. Over coverage=bad coverage.

I understand the digging on Amato. However, I would have thoroughly enjoyed a situation where Amato would have allowed himself to be demoted to the DC here at NC State. The guy can recruit (athletes) and he put together some stout defenses while here (with the help of Herring).

I think Amato would be a fine DC.

Dabo sounds like he is not ready for prime time, not yet anyway. I am surprised that Clemson didn’t go for the big-splash hire – it would have matched their self-image down there.

Yes he would. He’s not a good head coach but he can rack ’em up on defense.

what phenomena is at work that results in the smallest schools with (on paper at least) the least chance to be successful due to resources, fanbase, facilities, etc. now have the best coaches in the conference, and the “big schools” like Clemson and FSU have the duds? Yeah, I know Randy Shannon was on the hot seat prior to this season and the Spaz at BC is unproven, but, as a whole, I’d take the four coaches at Duke, Wake, BC and Miami over any other group of four in the league (although TOB, Beamer, Butch, and Paul Johnson would be a close 2nd). And based solely on performance so far this season, you’d have to but TOB and Butch in the bottom third of league coaches.

I think Amato would be a fine DC.

The available evidence suggests otherwise. Compare the results of the 2003 defense (with no DC) to those with Herring as DC in 2004. I see no reason to think that Amato would make a good DC.

  10. Daily Update 10/13/2009 at 11:59 AM #

    2003 defense = young DL
    2004 defense = experienced DL

Herring is the most overrated DC in the history of football (at least by NC State fans). UNC’s defense from last year to this year is another example of the youth on DL premise.

Amato’s ego wouldn’t make him a good DC.

  11. CaptainCraptacular 10/13/2009 at 12:28 PM #

Since he has been back at FSU, Amato has recruited exactly one player for them. In 3 years. One player.

No-one in Nole nation save for Bobby wants Chuck as defensive coordinator once Mickey retires.

I knew Clemson was in trouble when they lost a winnable game to GT. I wondered about the play calling in that game. Then comes the fiasco against MD. Whoever said they should have taken Tubberville was right on the money. Dabo might make it through this year but when the situation has degraded to physical altercations between coaches you’re running on borrowed time.

OK – this has to be one of the most absurd statements I’ve ever read on this board.

Let’s look at this great group of Shannon, Cutcliff, Spaz, and Grobe…

Now Grobe- I can see that. He’s a great coach. I’d rate him ahead of TOB…but you’ve got to give PJ a chance at GaTech. Grobe didn’t win a championship at Wake until he had Skinner. Quite frankly, we have zero idea what will happen once Skinner leaves. It’s no coincidence that Grobe’s “salad days” are occurring with Skinner’s 4 years. This doesn’t mean that he hasn’t done a great job, it just means that before Skinner got there, his results were decent, but compared to say a TOB @ NC State.

But in general, I’d put Grobe behind only Beamer in conference.

Now, Shannon. Does anyone think that this guy could succeed anywhere but a big school? I don’t. He’s succeeding this year because he was able to get a great OC and solid DC. In addition, he’s mining from the talent rich area of South Florida.

Still, let’s see him build a team like Butch built before he left the “U”…

Cutcliff – he’s a solid coach. However, he’s in a great situation. Right now, he’s playing w/ house money. His QB, like Skinner, is starting in his 4th year has started to click. The true test is how he does w/out his stud QB. He flunked that test @ Ole Miss.

Spaziani – Now this is laughable. 5 or 6 games into the Spaz era he’s better than his mentor. You know, he may end up being so. He’s 2-2 in the ACC – where in 2 games, his offense has gotten absolutely slaughtered. Let’s at least let him finish the year out before you put him in front of 4 coaches who have led their schools to multiple bowl games.

    2003 defense = young DL
    2004 defense = experienced DL

Same kids on the line and for the most part same kids in the secondary. “More experienced”, I could buy….but the entire DL was true SOs and RS-SOs in 2004. Herring may or may not be over rated. But he certainly showed that he is a heck of a lot better DC than Amato.

  15. Alpha Wolf 10/13/2009 at 4:23 PM #

Remember how UNC shredded Herring’s defense in the TA/goal-line game? I would argue with you that his D’s are beatable by even mediocre teams that have the right game plan.

FSU football program is a total mess. Jimbo does not want Chuck as DC, he wants him gone and tried to get rid of him last summer but Papa Bowden would not let it happen. I know the former AD and some of the behind the scenes football stories are unbelievable. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Chuck was shocked when we fired him and now the next head coach wants him gone and he is pushing to be DC with a contract. Bowden like alot of old coaches, do not know when to step down.

  17. BJD95 10/13/2009 at 5:46 PM #

When valuing coaches, trust the market. Chuckles wanted pretty much any head coaching job he could get after leaving State. The only thing he could get was a “loyalty” offer to go back to FSU. And he apparently would have been fired after each of the last two seasons if not for Papa Bowden.

When Bowden goes, Amato will probably have to retire. Nobody wants to work with a guy like that.

What about Amato as Recruiting Coordinator?

  19. 61Packer 10/13/2009 at 10:12 PM #

As bad as we are right now, it would be far worse for us if Clemson, FSU, Maryland and BC had Jim Grobe-like coaches.

So, here’s hoping these 4 division rivals are stuck with what they’ve got for at least 10 more seasons.
