Would be much better to have a mosaic of images that display the university in its entirety, with the reinforcement of a strong branding statement. The tone should be aspirational, not smarmy. unless0 we are aiming to fill our student ranks with a bunch of dickhead Mac snobs who wear black shirts and listen to Creed.

I think many of you liberal arts majors are being a little too sensitive.

If you are truly honest with yourself, you have to admit that the long-standing identity of NC State is and was as a technical and agricultural school.

For those who haven’t seen, NCSU’s homepage has links to articles of each claim made in the commercial (i.e. better space suits and hospital gowns).

Personally as an alum, I’m proud of the commercial because it shows we are actively pushing the boundaries – not just teaching what is already known. Say what you want about the spokesperson in the commercial, but the material is solid. Maybe it will just attract the smarter folks, but in the end, smarter folks = higher degrees = higher salaries = more back to the NC State and the community. Win-win situation.

Absolutely. NC State is known for producing hightech grads, and UNC-CH is known for cranking out ambulance chasers, waiters and poets. Speaking from experience, the software business here in the Triangle is largely run by State grads (along with a few VT and Clemson grads). I don’t understand people who feel this is somehow a bad thing.

Whenever I think about how good or bad our promotional commercials are, I just compare it to that stupid university of maryland commercial that has nothing but a freaking turtle walking around for about 90 seconds. Even our old commercials were better than that walking soup mix.

Not a big fan of the actor but I’m sure he is better than some of the other directions State could of gone.

I think the message is right on. As most of you know NC State’s history has always been cutting edge research regardless of the college.

For all her problems NC State has created a better place in our city, county, state, nation, planet and heavens.

Somehow you would think this would translate into wins. Come on Textiles give us a basketball uniform that looks good and wins games. Stealth technology?

CHASS should be disbanded in the morning.

But right after the guy in the commercial and the producer of the commercial are lined up against Tompkins Hall and shot.

When was the last time, outside of TOB, that State did anything that did not look cheap, odd or corrupt?

I’m not trying to be personal but I think you should look beyond the N&O headlines and see what the faculty and students are doing at NC State. NC State does great things everyday and maybe this guy will help get the message out-

“Gator Nation” guru leaving UF for N.C. State

    by Nathan Crabbe

Joe Hice might not be a commonly known name with the University of Florida faithful, but most recognize the Gator Nation campaign he promoted.

Since 2005, Hice has worked as UF’s associate vice president for marketing and public relations. Now he’s leaving to take a job as North Carolina State University’s chief communications officer and associate vice chancellor of university communications.

Hice worked in marketing for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and the Segway personal transporter company before coming to UF. He ushered in the university’s ad campaign that touted the school as “the foundation for the Gator Nation.” The campaign’s “Go Gators” ads become so well known that they inspired YouTube parodies.

More recently, he launched the Gator Grotto blog. While I wasn’t thrilled when he used the blog to take shots at the Sun or reprint my blog posts in their entirely, it marked a notable step in UF’s expanding involvement with online media.

Now that he’s moving on, could “Foundation for the Wolfpack Nation” ads be far behind?

“Hands in pockets, chest hair sprouting from underneath the black shirt (who in the hell wears a black shirt anyway?), lightly gelled hair firmly in place, a smug sense of “I’m smarter than you plus I can actually hit on chicks at 42 Street Oyster Bar”, et”

Sounds like a large number of advertising types I have met in my time.

And McCallum, I hope your stereotype of “engineering types” was made in jest. If not, feel free to look me up and I will be happy to show you that you are wrong.
