I like it. Again, this is by far the best advertising campaign NC State has offered since I’ve been old enough to recognize this sort of thing. It’s certainly the most congruent with our legacy of technology advancement and forward thinking.

These “Red” ads project a very positive energy about NC State and I very much like them.

I still like it… but not quite as much as last year’s similar spot. That one’s gonna be tough to top… it was just bad-ass… and it irritated our friends from the Hill, who claimed that it was obnoxious, superior, and conceited.

In a word, it was perfect.

NCSU is a world class university, the only the we have needed for many years is better marketing .

Personally, I liked the catchphrase “knowledge is the prey and we are the hunter” a little better, but this one is awesome.

wolfonthehill: The funny thing about many of the Chapel Hill contingent is that they are very insecure and need NC State as a foil to feel superior to because they largely feel inferior academically to Duke. But a funny thing happened: the UNC-GA used to publish the mean and median starting salary for graduates of its constituent schools, and guess what: NC State slightly edged Carolina. So if they want to feel superior, let them, I’ll take the money.

The class of “get things done”. I like it.

Good stuff. 2 for 2 in our last couple promotional commercials.

I like the commercial. The hospital gown bit was funny. Of course I never resemble any of the students. I don’t ever recall walking around thinking of anything all that intelligent. I was mostly thinking of how tired or hungry I was. I guess all of the smart people were on Centennial Campus or something.

I would prefer we put the money for that ad campaign into a buyout of little head jed.

IMO we would get much more positive press out of a winning sports program.

Red Means Go was the Duke football slogan back in the late 1970s (re: Red Wilson, their football coach, who was fired the very afternoon after Duke beat UNC to finish 6-5).

I think our slogan should be Jed Means Go.

Non sequitur’s statement of what they “should have said” is hilarious. Nice work.

I am sure this has been covered before, but who is the guy speaking?

  14. rdjennin 09/07/2009 at 5:14 PM #

Yeah, this isnt the same guy as the commercials before is it? He looks different

Alpha, I’ve been telling people that for years. OF 3 unx grads who are friends only 1 works in their area of study. Admittedly, one of them is an Anesthesiologist and makes double what I do but she didn’t get it at the hole. Then again, I guess if the degree is easy to get it’s no big deal to go on to something else.
CNN published the top 15 money making degrees 2 weeks ago. Might have been straight out of school salaries, can’t remember. ALL are science/math/engineering degrees. I laughed at how many are at NC State and how few can be found in the rest of our state universities.

  16. Dogbreath 09/07/2009 at 7:16 PM #

I guess my only two beefs are that, 1) 1/3 of our grads come from either Ag, CHASS, or the CoM, and the commercial seems largely focused on the technical aspects of our degree offerings, and 2) the guy is sporting a Kenny Loggins beard, and that ain’t cool.

Only an engineer would like this typical knee jerk NC State promotional.

Hands in pockets, chest hair sprouting from underneath the black shirt (who in the hell wears a black shirt anyway?), lightly gelled hair firmly in place, a smug sense of “I’m smarter than you plus I can actually hit on chicks at 42 Street Oyster Bar”, etc then all of the stupid slogans……….progress…………fast paced…………and all these morons walking past or in the back ground.

Frankly, worshiping at the alter of father progress/change/moving forward has gotten more than a little old. Can NC State promote itself ,just once, beyond the cheesy stereotypical engineer “done good” heat of the moment fashion statement?

Instead of saying “I like that” how about asking folks from other schools what they think of a dork with a fur face, gelled hair and a hot game of pocket pool going down promoting their school.

A modern day used car salesman…………that is NC STATE.

I think I’ll go to the SC/UGA game this weekend and throw liquor bottles at the SC fans.

    I just forgot.

Some idiots I know are going to be in Raleigh this weekend and I’m coming up for the game.

If I see this guy on the street I think I’ll knock him out with a bollo punch.

I thought Dennis Miller was doing commercials for NCSU. This guy is not Dennis Miller. That beard is awful. I am not a fan of Dennis Miller, BTW.

sorta like the Dos Equis guy without the “fun”.
and, just to add fuel, let’s “do more o’ dat”.

I’m a CPA and regretfully the State grads drag behind the UNC grads in most areas, communications and personal interactions primarily. Technical skills are about the same, but the “analytical mindset” sometimes gets in the way.

None of them can write a coherent sentence when they start though. But, that’s been a “sign of the times” for years.

    Sid means oh nooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. McCallum 09/08/2009 at 6:20 AM #

As long as 33,000 people are all going in the same direction then something must be good.

    HA!!!

Who writes this stuff? State should rename itself Wisconsin since it produces more cheese per/1000 people than nearly any place in the country.

And BTW: I used to fish and skinny dip in Lake Raleigh. To think it is covered with dorks and geeks all moving in the same direction, which at this time means head down talking on a cell phone, is simply a horror to me.

I’d like to hear Cowdog on this issue.

NOTE: NCSU is not a world class university unless you seek to define world class as some ubiquitous ranking. From 20,00 ft up the last round of firings should let you know where the ceiling is in west Raleigh.

I’m not a big fan of this commercial. The guy comes off as a bit cras, and I agree the McCallum, the message is getting old. NC State stands for a whole lot more than engineering. You’d never know it by seeing the commercial.

The line about the hospital gown is unnecessary. I understand it is a poke at humor. However, it doesn’t work here.

  25. eas 09/08/2009 at 8:14 AM #

Not a fan of the commercials either and agree the school is much more than engineering. I can’t help it but whenever I see the guy or hear him, I want to punch him in the face. Just my 2 cents though.

I did think the hospital gown joke was funny though. Besides that point, I haven’t been a fan of any of these commercials.
