Carter-Finley Stadium Time Lapse Video

I couldn’t figure out how to embed this video so I have to provide you the link to it. Pretty cool, and looks pretty good with the colors and the students’ “White Out”. Hope you enjoy.

While we are showing videos, how can we not archive the following for the future? Thing about this missed call that drives me the most crazy is that Smith may have scored a touchdown on this play had South Carolina not pulled him down by his helmet.

He only had the punter to beat. Still, SC was the better team last Thursday. No doubt in my mind. At the end of the year, I hope its a different story. SC will upset some SEC teams this year with the strength of their defense alone.

What would be a game against Carolina without the refs influencing the outcome against the Pack?

  3. triadwolf 09/09/2009 at 10:27 AM #

The ref will say he did not want to make a call that late in the game on the chance that it would influence the outcome. But I believe he intentionally Did Not make the call In Order to influence the outcome. With all the attention put on facemask penalties & horse-collars the last couple of years, there is absolutely no question that is a penalty.

With regard to the survey – Can you believe that the Colonial Athletic Assoc. is 2-0 against the ACC? That’s the Colonial folks… And both games were on the road. At least one of the SEC’s victories came from a highly ranked team on a neutral field.

Ref was looking right at it…I’d say the call gets made 99.9% of the time…

I know that games are usually not lost on just one play; that it is a culmination of things (harmful penalties, bad play-calling, lack of play-making, etc.), but in close games, sometimes all it takes is one play and when that potentially game-changing play is negated by a blatant, un-called penalty, it’s pretty frustrating. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt on the holding calls b/c there is a lot of holding on both sides that doesn’t get called, but something like this must be called. The guy stopped a high-percentage chance for a TD with an illegal tackle and was rewarded. My friend who saw the game asked if it was “home-cooking” before I reminded him that SC was the visiting team.
P.S. I’m glad the video clip was extended to remind the viewers at home that the officials were SEC officials.

It’s a good thing he didn’t return that punt for a touchdown. State wouldn’t want to show off their Special Teams playmaking ability on an out of conference game. They’ve got to save those kinds of things for ACC play.

That is the same rationale for defending the conservative offensive play calling from last week. I’m sorry, I know it’s last week but I still can’t get over the fact that the team wasn’t given a good opportunity to score points. And now I’m reading that some people have been trying to rationalize the poor playcalling by claiming that NC State is saving their “good offensive plays” for conference games.

The biggest marketing push the football program will be given all year is an Opening Day, Nationally Televised, Regional Rivalry game against a well known Coach. THAT is when you break out all your “good plays” to win the game.

BTW, you could probably embed the time lapse video using the YouTube version of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPMsG0pqXVY

I’m not blaming the loss on the officiating. But in the first half, every time we did something positive, it was negated by a penalty. And I saw several plays where I was sure I saw holding on SC not get called. I’m only talking about the most obvious holds, nearly as obvious as the video clip embedded above.

Sometimes I wonder if the officials are making it clear that you are NOT going to win the game. It has to be disheartening to the players when they see the MOST obvious calls not being made. If they don’t call that, what WILL they call? Oh, I know. They’ll call an abundance of things against us.

SC played better than us, but not that much better. They had the benefit of great field position for the entire first half, which probably accounted for the 100 yards difference in total yards. Every time we made a move that could get us out of the shadow of our own end zone, the flags came out.

I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’… ok, maybe I am giving a little credit to the zebras for this one.

“If you are an official, how do you miss that?” – Announcer

It was blatant and right in front of him. When a player spins like that from an arm grab, every coach-on-a-couch knows that is done by helmet interaction.

Also, holding you were referencing….Willie Young was held right in front of official while chasing down Garcia. If you saw it you will recall easily.

The kick to one of our players by Saunders is another one that would have been an easy call.

Officials aren’t perfect, I can forgive the difficult calls…..it is the apparent and obvious that really disappoint me.

Every time we made a move that could get us out of the shadow of our own end zone, the flags came out the pass was dropped.

Offensive execution had a much larger effect on the outcome of this game than did officiating.

Cool video, I was in the stands wondering how the whiteout looked on tv. I bet we see some offense saturday…….from the Pack.

One thing no one has mentioned is the fumble call. I know that was overruled, but it happened RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE FRIGGIN’ REF who made the call.

That officiating was one-sided and god awful. I don’t know whether to attribute the way it ended up to incompetence in general, a bias towards South Carolina or if there was something more sinister…but it was really inexcuseable. Lots of obvious stuff that USC got away with.

  13. bradleyb123 09/09/2009 at 2:43 PM #

Some of the missed calls were so obvious and inexcusable that I have to question the officiating. The kid’s head was nearly ripped off, right in front of the ref, and no call. It was the kid with the ball. At least ONE official should have had his eyes on the ball-carrier at all times.

If that doesn’t sum up the officiating in this game, I don’t know what does.

The officials sure didn’t have a problem seeing when WE did something wrong. The flags were awful loose against the Pack, and negated some big plays.

I felt like SC just got the benefit of the doubt. If a call could go either way, it was going SC’s way. That so-called fumble recovery was a case in point. The refs were almost jubilant in their zeal to give SC that ball. Thank goodness for official reviews.

Yes, a blown call. But I’m sure if we added it up over the years, we got away with just as many; we just tend to remember the bad ones we got screwed on. Remember this, if we make that catch in the end zone, we likely win. You have to overcome bad calls. There’s always a next play or a next series. We did not take advantage of opportunities we did have.

On a related topic, I was impressed by the discipline the young man showed after the face mask. He got up and ran right off the field. He didn’t accost the referee and stand there and complain like an Amato-coached player probably would have (though probably everyone would have understood if he had) That’s discipline.

  15. choppack1 09/09/2009 at 3:52 PM #

wolfbluff – there’s a lot of truth in that. I don’t think it’s the only reason we won. They were just “bad calls” that went against us. Of course, there’s no guarantee the dropped pass would have resulted in a win either, is there?

  16. bradleyb123 09/09/2009 at 5:27 PM #

I saw a few holds where our defender was running toward the ball, and their O-lineman was behind him holding his arm, pulling our guy’s arm behind his back and slowing him down.

There were just a few calls like that, but they were so obvious, you have to wonder what game the refs were watching.

Had we made that catch in the endzone for the score, I feel pretty confident that the officials would have made life a little more hard for us. No doubt.

And I do notice when I see a bad call that goes our way. I normally tell my wife “we got away with one there!” and I’m glad because hey, every little bit helps.

I didn’t see any calls go our way that shouldn’t have in this game. And I think I’m pretty objective.

That no-call where our guy nearly had his head ripped off was a biggie. We’d have had the ball on the 35 instead of at midfield. That’s a big difference. And it was the easiest call in the world to make. When the calls are missed that badly, I just have to wonder.

I also remember the game last year, when they let SC players late-hit our QB when he was already on the ground a few times. For some reason, SC got away with murder for two years in a row against us.

Is it standard policy for the visiting team’s conference officials to ref a game between OOC opponents? SEC officials called our game but I was watching the WF-Baylor game Saturday at Wake and it was an ACC crew. Ron Cherry and company. Does anyone know if the protocol varies between conferences on whose officials are used? Just curious.

Normally the officials come from the visiting team’s conference. However, when there is significant travel involved, often the officials come from the home team’s conference. IIRC, this was discussed in the N&O several years ago when UNC played a home/home series with one of the Arizona teams.

Ron Cherry of the “given him the bizness” fame~! Now there’s a great ref!

They won, State lost, now move on.
