And You Thought NC State Celebrated Mediocrity

Apparently this ad was published in Columbia’s newspaper, The State, and it celebrates the mediocrity of the South Carolina Gamecocks. Not even NC State revels in mediocrity like this (and we all know that is saying something).

South Carolina ad

The plan is for their football team to be one game under .500 at the end of the day on Sept 3rd.

Reminds me of the time I rented billboard space on I-40 when all 3 of my children could tie their own shoes.

You’re kidding, right? You rented a billboard on I-40?

“And You Thought NC State Celebrated Mediocrity”

The NCSU “Administration” apparently does! Unfortunately it is not necessary to take out newspaper space for all to clearly see it!

uh yeah, I was being a smart-ass (as usual).

might as well rent an I-40 billboard.
they’re 1/2 price right now, compared
to May 08. if you want one facing on the
way back from the beach…even cheaper.

While the “at least a .500 record” thing may be best left unsaid, at least The State newspaper is being supportive of the local team. I used to live in Columbia, and the one thing I noticed was that the local media and local businesses really did support their hometown team. There was a lot of support for Clemson there, too, but Columbia was first and foremost a Gamecock town, and it went beyond just the alumni and fans. The whole community really got on board, especially during football season. It was obvious who the home team was, to a degree that I never saw while living in or visiting Raleigh.

I live in Columbia, and that^ is definitely true, but the two cities are totally different. I don’t know if comparing the cities really works.

The newspaper’s job is to report, not support. As long as the coverage is fair, there should be no complaints.

Recently (last 5 years, at least), I think media coverage in the area has been immensely fair.

Boy, I’m sure glad WE don’t celebrate mediocrity like they do. Can you imagine getting fired up over going at least .500 in your 3 men’s revenue sports?

    Uhhh….wait a minute……..6-7, 25-31…….

Philip Rivers’ senior year, there was a SPECIAL SECTION dedicated to our football team each week. Granted, they canceled it after our third loss (we’d lose two more) of the year. But when we’ve had a team that was worth more than a bucket of warm spit, the local media has been very supportive.

Or is someone wondering why the UNC team that has won two national titles in the last couple of years gets better basketball coverage?

Or were you wondering why our former football coach…who went out of his way to urinate in the face of local reporters…sometimes caught hell from the columnists?

Or were you wondering why local TV reporters who wanted to do very positive puff-pieces on some of our basketball players didn’t go to Herculean tasks to continue to file stories after being denied access by our WONDERFUL sports information director?

I’m just curious, do you think Ohio University fans sit around and wonder why the Buckeyes get all the good press?

    I love me some Noah.

I can’t begin to tell you the dozens of stories from media about how futile it is to even try to write features on NC State athletes given the tone and speed at which our SID moves.

But, what does the local media know, anyway?

They probably are just ‘negative’ people just like those crazies on the interwebs.

The State newspaper neither supports USC nor reports anything accurately.

I would surmise that Joe Person, the worst sportswriter in history, paid for this ad. If you think the McGlatchy owned State supports South Carolina, I’d question your reading and comprehension ability.

Anybody else old enough to remember when NC State go good press out of Columbia?

And excuse me, but does anyone really think this is an ad “congratulating” the Cocks? If this isn’t ridicule, what is?

I Googled “state media company” and found some interesting history about the founders of The State.

The Gonzales brothers… Sons of an aristocratic planter’s daughter and a Cuban revolutionary… Whoa!! Can you just imagine how that went over? “Martha, did you say Sue Anne got pregnant while she was down in Cuba? Gawddammit, I TOLD you NOT to let that girl get near none of them horney Cuban boys. Oh hell, at least it wasn’t ole Jed.”

That conversation may be a little bigotted now but in those days…

The State was, in my opinion anyway, a good newspaper before the McClatchy group bought it a few years ago. I don’t know how it is now, but if it’s being run like two other area McClatchy papers, The News & Observer and The Charlotte Observer, the State’s days are numbered.

    as if this needed saying…..

    “Beat those Cocks!”

I’ll never forget one of their fan buses driving through campus in 1988 and liquor bottles flying out and hitting student cars.

They are the lowest of the low and no amount of contempt should be spared.

If I were going to the f-ball game, I’d make a large printout of this ad and put it on poster board. I’d place it by my tailgate area and congratulate all the Gamecock fans that walk by.

Hey, its not every day we get to poke fun at another university’s athletics.

I see that Status Quoblinger is at it again!

    http://www.newsobserver.com/2972/story/1554789.html

With the economy the way it is and the State of NC (among MANY others) making deep budget cuts left and right, he comes up with this one!? Does he have a brain in his head (outside of “book learning!”) Since when is it appropriate to keep paying a non-provost a provost’s salary to simply make lesson plans that others do for a professor’s salary! Outrageous!
