NC State’s AD views his program as home to athletes not good enough to get scholarships from SEC schools

Tuesday we ran a damning numbers-centric entry regarding Lee Fowler’s Athletics Department. Today, we thought we would just throw out a few interesting items and insight that evolve more from recent off-the-field developments.

“The Mind of Lee Fowler”
One of SFN’s all-time greatest entries was written over four years ago by Michael Byrne. The essay – The Mind of Lee Fowler – was written in the heart of the Sendek years and does an amazing job of outlining a lot of the key points at the time, including Fowler’s multiple attacks and disparaging remarks on/about the NC State fanbase.

Sidenote: How did that strategy work out for Fooler when the basketball job opened and he needed to market the job? Mr. Simpleton has never never been able to look forward and understand the future consequences of his actions, comments and behaviors. Did it ever register with him or his bosses that Tom O’Brien pursued NC State’s football coaching job publicly and privately citing the strong support and great fanbase that Fowler has disparaged for years? Has anyone ever noticed that Coach O’Brien has never once highlighted NC State’s strong leadership as one of his factors for coming to the school?

You really HAVE to go back and read that entry. Byrne’s essay moves from table-setting to a valiant attempt to explain how past events in Fowler’s career have married with his egotistical personality to develop his administrative ‘philosophies’.

Lack of respect for NC State
Last month, a poster named packdiver05 shared the following story on Pack Pride’s premium boards that we could not ignore. It will make you sick when you read this, but the exchange re-inforces Fowler’s innate disrespect for the institution that he leads. I unfortunately have more perspective on this than I have time to type.

I know the nonrevenue sports don’t mean a lot to many people but to all the kids at this school that are working there butts off just as hard as these revenue athletes on much smaller or NO scholarships, and the alumni that gave four years to the university devoted to a sport they loved, it means a whole lot. I figured this story might help some of you get into the mind of our great Lee Fowler…

As a nonrevenue athlete at State completely under his tenure, for a sport that DOMINATED the ACC and national rankings for a very long time, I got to see how little he cared about our success first hand.

At a team meeting my senior year, we had the privilege of being berated by Lee Fowler for some of our teammates’ trying to get our coach replaced, at this time in his career it was OBVIOUS that he was not taking this program back to its glory days of the seventies and eighties.

At this meeting Lee Fowler stated that his goal for all nonrevenue sports was to be competing for a top 3 finish in the ACC standings, and to annually place in the top half of the conference standings. Looking back now, this would be a great goal for most of our athletics teams, because we are not even there, let alone challenging to win these championships. This to me is an unacceptable goal at UNC, at Duke, and throughout the ACC.

At this same meeting Mr. Fowler said one last thing that will forever sting me in the back of my head, and convinced me that this man is the largest problem/obstacle for the NC State athletics program. He asked our whole team, “Who here received scholarship offers to compete in the SEC?”

To me, the nerve of that question, to belittle us athletes that had devoted four years to this great university, by suggesting that most of us were not even good enough to compete in the SEC, that we should be happy that we were receiving scholarships anywhere, let alone here was degrading. And this man is supposed to be our universities greatest supporter.

Winning in Waco
Since we were talking women’s basketball, why not take a quick look at the following quote from Kim Mulkey:

“Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t win at the highest level at Baylor University,” Mulkey said. “It’s been proven, and there’s no reason it can’t be done. It takes the right administration, the right resources and the right coaches.

Is it any wonder that NC State no longer competes at the highest level in college athletics since we only have one of the those three elements.

If any of you reading this have ever set foot in Waco, TX (particularly in the months of May-September) the idea that winning at the “highest level at Baylor University” is one hard damn thing to do.

While we are discussing Baylor, can I just say Scott Drew to get it on the record now? This guy is going places.

    SFN Thanks I concur.

I heard a clip yesterday by Wall that said “he intended to attend a year or two in college” and was not turning pro. Now, if you can believe that, who knows?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but my feeling is that the overwhelming majority of the posters on this site agree about the following:

    1. Fowler is a problem.
    2. Oblinger is a problem for not dealing with Fowler.
    3. The “higher powers” don’t seem to want to deal with either 1 or 2.

There’s adequate information to terminate Fowler for a multitude of reasons(some appear to be straws that should break two camels’ backs).

If this information is available to us and is true(and I don’t doubt the validity), then why don’t these “higher powers” get off their fat rumps and get moving? Are they afraid of publicity? Are they that bad as business people? Have they been “bought off” or do they just want to try to avoid controversy?

Whatever the answer is, I have no respect for any of them at this point and it’ll take a lot to convince me to ever change my mind. It’s a true shame that any of them are in any type leadership position.

highstick – do you remember when V got fired? The vote on that one wasn’t even close. He got three votes from the BOT to stay.

But it took MONTHS to work that contract out before it was official.

Fowler’s transgressions are far more subtle and the vote isn’t anywhere near as lopsided. I absolutely believe he’s toast. But…again…this isn’t some job flipping burgers. It doesn’t happen quickly.

As far as Lowe goes…he’s a chicken running around the barnyard who isn’t smart enough to realize that he left his skull behind.

I do not believe for one minute that there is anyway he could have survived the craphole that he dug for himself.

This stuff just takes time. But the decisions have already been made.

“I do not believe for one minute that there is anyway he could have survived the craphole that he dug for himself.”

    <- respectfully disagree Noah

If we win the confrence he still fired?? What about make the sweet 16? still already decided??

    IMO
If lowe can be in the top half of the ACC and make some type of post season tourney, He wont be fired.
The admin is looking to get the the wolfpack basketball name out there, and not in a neg way like with sendek and the last coaching “search”. I firmly believe lowe was hired for a 4 year “prove you belong here” job. nothing more nothing less.

His upcoming recruiting challenge will be huge because having said that, if theres not much to look forward to as far as new talent, i dont see him sticking around. He is given just enough slack to tighten the nuse (no racial slur there sorry). If AND ITS A HUGE IF sid can get either Cothron or Leslie to join Harrow AND is in the top half of the confrence (which wont be as hard as this year considering the talent leaving) he stays.
No way the admin has already said “ok he gets to finish next year but then we fire him nomatter what.” thats not the way buisness works and we all know state is trying to run a buisness not an athletics dept.

    Without context, who knows?

I’m having a hard time imagining ANY context where that comment would have been a positive thing for our AD to say.

The minutes show the recent meeting had no discussions that would lend one to believe Sid or LF’s jobs are in jeopardy.

I believe Sid’s job is safe for now. He will coach these recruits this year.

The anti LF movement has not gained enough momentum at the highest level for LF to worry about his job. Money still flowing in to so he got that going for him. I hear football season tickets will be a sell out again. That is huge considering the economy.

Remember Baddour was catching lots of flack for Doherty, Torbush, and Bunting. LF is not catching near the heat Baddour was getting from UNX nation. Baddour was allowed to weather the storm and conduct additional job searches. The same line of thinking appears to be going on here plus LF seems to have lucked into a good football hire and looking good with the WB ball hire. And within 2 years the b ball situation will change or be extended.

Well…that’s sort of like asking if a leprachaun and a unicorn grow wings, can they fly faster than a sparrow.

But, ultimately, yes. I believe that the S.S. Lowe has foundered. It’s time to stop bailing water and get to the lifeboats.

Can I mix a few more metaphors together? 🙂

I’m trying to point you in the right direction…

(wins and losses are inconsequential right now)

Alpha: If I’ve attacked Grey or anyone else and potentially crossed a line, then my apologies. I personally feel that anyone who would staunchly defend LF on this site probably has some sort of affiliation with him. There’s actually nothing wrong with that whether it is true or not, but I’ll not make that statement again.

I think we’re all hoping for the same thing — improvement in a currently putrid situation. I hope I’m part of the group that is working to improve and shape the voice of the site and our little part of the “lunatic fringe.”

I will say one thing in LF’s defense. If the budget is dead last in the ACC, then it’s not particularly fair for us to expect to perform much beyond that. Again, this speaks to larger issues which we’re all bringing up.

I just have to weigh in on what Foul-er allegedly said to OUR ATHLETES. Are you guys (packdiver05 and sockerne1) telling us that our AD told OUR ATHLETES that they weren’t talented?????? That is absolutely unbelievable and unacceptable. Where do I sign on a petition to have Foul-er removed?? That is like a parent telling a child he isn’t smart enough to make A’s in school and therefore shouldn’t strive for good grades. I’m absolutely stunned and angry that he would do that!

  12. Pack Leader 04/16/2009 at 1:34 PM #

Noah- Ok assuming your right (which im still not convinced next season is hopless in april) and we will have to abandon ship and let the captian go down with it, would you keep Larry Harris on your staff? seems to me he is the one coach who has immunity throughout the entire process. known as a recruting coach, not a teaching coach, he seems to consistantly bring in top talent….

  13. Noah 04/16/2009 at 1:50 PM #

Pack Leader – worrying about that is like polishing the brass on the Titanic.

  14. Pack Leader 04/16/2009 at 1:58 PM #

Noah what are you book are you reading today?? Metaphors and Me?? haha good one though

  15. Noah 04/16/2009 at 2:06 PM #

I agree with you that Harris has value. I just think our problems are much bigger than, “Who is one of our assistant coaches?”

  16. Pack Leader 04/16/2009 at 2:12 PM #

    agree

True! I’m ok with the wait as long as “it is in the works”. Maybe during the V thing, it didn’t seem so long cause I was living in the Beaufort/Hilton Head area and news from NC State wasn’t very accessible then because of no internet. The Daniels’ family must have forgotten to print everything the Beaufort Gazette and Island Packet too even though they owned those papers also.

You guys have got me really excited! Given this opportunity, I hope we don’t screw it up even worse though.

Off topic, but I got a big chuckle last night watching Bill O’Reilly when he gave the Tarholes the “pinhead award”. If anyone can get that clip and post that big ole’ baby blue UNC with pinhead above it, send me a link!!!

Is there anything public about Quinton? I catch the innuendo, but where can I read really what happened.

  18. highstick 04/16/2009 at 2:15 PM #

Whoops, I forgot to mention, not only am I a member of the Lunatic Fringe, but now the DHS has pegged me with be a right wing terrorist fanatic!

  19. Wolf Dog 04/16/2009 at 2:18 PM #

If Harris or the other assistants believed Lowe was in trouble, they would already have left or be leaving. Harris is very marketable due to his recruiting abilities.

  20. highstick 04/16/2009 at 2:20 PM #

How serious was the mention of Towe being a possibility at App. State this past week? Maybe there was something to it???

  21. Thinkpack17 04/16/2009 at 2:22 PM #

I have inside word that Sid gets an extension if he makes the NCAA’s next year.

Right! Everyone’s beating down their door. I hear Monte Towe has to get an extra PO box just to field the never-ending supply of letters BEGGING him to come to Podunk State and sit on the bench and…uh…whatever else he does. (no one really knows)

Good God in Heaven. Finally something from your keyboard that is not occluded in transcendental smoke.

MT was one of the worst things the scramble hiring that happened 3 yrs. ago produced.

And stated it from the get go.

    So Noah…now you’re talkin’.

    You guys want inside dope….?

  24. highstick 04/16/2009 at 4:14 PM #

We “smoking” Cowdog! Give us the dirt!! Never was a fan of MT! I guess you know why as good as anyone!

  25. TheCOWDOG 04/16/2009 at 4:37 PM #

    ‘Stick, what up.

I surely used the inside dope thing in relationship to all the inside dope stuff that’s been goin’ on in here of late.

You know that I know shit that ….probably does not belong on a public forum.

Travel to golf country and you will hear the same. The voice you hear it from has the words best suited for Monty talk.

I know I’ve just come off as a big pussy…but…and trust me, I’m just barely holding back.

Maybe someday, certainly one on one.

( Holy shit…I just smoked up the joint. Noah, you’ve got company. 🙂 )
