Well, at least we get to play in it.

BTW, here is your amazin’ stat of the day — N’Western has never made an NCAA Men’s basketball tournament. Ever.

  2. BJD95 04/22/2009 at 1:37 PM #

Kind of a weak matchup, but we could hardly have expected anything better. I guess the last two Michigan State/UNC matchups were such compelling TV that ESPN just had to make sure we saw it a third time.

  3. wufpup76 04/22/2009 at 2:17 PM #

Ha! I figured it would be N’Western or Iowa.

    Sad stuff …

Like Noah said – at least we’re in it (and the Wildcats weren’t half bad last season).

So UVA took our place in the ‘not even capable enough to have a match’ position?

Hooray for us to get out of oblivion and to play the [11th?] best Big Ten team [even that sounds horrific: “11th best Big 10 team].

  5. NCSUgator 04/22/2009 at 2:32 PM #

GT will be the odd man out this year..

  6. Dr. BadgerPack 04/22/2009 at 2:37 PM #

Playing Northwestern probably isn’t a terrible thing considering the new hire at UVa. Many of the principles are the same, and the level of personel- at least this upcoming season- will be similar. So, we get a free preview essentially. Whether or not that can be used to our advantage, of course, remains to be seen.

I think I would rather have played Marquette again…that being said, I do look forward to our lovely schedule of RPI teams ranked from #200 – #300..

  8. thekind 04/22/2009 at 2:52 PM #

    Lets face it fruitcakes…
we are the Northwestern of the ACC. They are probably complaining about playing us.

  9. Packman02 04/22/2009 at 2:53 PM #

    ^ “At least we’re in it”…

My sentiments exactly. Northwestern will not scare many but they did ALMOST make the NCAA Tournament last year; I am not sure what lineup losses they’ve experienced but they will certainly not be a pushover.

The prospect of another UNC / MSU game absolutely thrills me beyond belief. Was this avoidable? Aren’t the matchups in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge predicated upong league finish the previous season.

“Aren’t the matchups in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge predicated upong league finish the previous season.?”

^Not necessarily. In ’07 we finished 10th in the ACC standings, yet played at predicted league contender Michigan St. at the start of the ’08 campaign (and we all know how well that went). Of course we were predicted for a top three finish in the ACC that season (yes, again – we know how that worked out).

So, I think the matchups are determined based more on predicted finish as opposed to the previous season’s standings (but is probably a combination of both).

Daniel Miller, a 6’10’ C *** from Loganville Ga has been granted a release from his LOI to Georgia today.

Sid needs a big man…wonder if he is going to talk to this kid. I didn’t see us listed, but we have a scholly and a need, so you have to wonder.

I just now noticed that Illinois will be at Clemson … the second consecutive season they will meet (in addition to MSU-Holes).

    That kinda blows …

    How ’bout some variety?!?

  13. Thinkpack17 04/22/2009 at 3:10 PM #

^^^^Any word on Deshawn Painter…or Roscoe Davis?

I saw the headline “NC State Inks Davis” and got really excited, but I quickly realized they were talking about Josh Davis.

  14. Packman02 04/22/2009 at 3:16 PM #

^ According to WolfpackHoops.com, Lowe and Strickland met with Painter yesterday; I’ve heard grades/test scores are the big hurdle with Deshawn and that he may, eventually, reclassify in the class of 2010.

We were recruiting him before he verballed to Florida (the school he’s recently decommitted from).

Not sure about the C from Georgia – hearing rumblings he’s bound for GT, but nothing to substantiate that.

Have we played Northwestern before in this event? Trying to remember who we’ve played in past: Penn State (at least twice), Mich. State, Purdue, Ohio State (or was that a regular scheduled game?) Who am I missing?

  16. Thinkpack17 04/22/2009 at 3:35 PM #

^^^Thanks for the info. I knew they went down there, sounds like he’s all ears at this point. Did you take a look at the comments section? It’s like the exact opposite of posters in this board. People saying we are definitely getting Wall…with Painter we are a top ten team. Damn! I thought I was an optimist. Getting Paint for ’09 would be huge though.

  17. Dr. BadgerPack 04/22/2009 at 3:38 PM #

Classof89- We played Iowa in one of the ugliest games in history.

  18. Thinkpack17 04/22/2009 at 3:39 PM #

We played Iowa…we put up like 25 points in the first half. Combined.

  19. BJD95 04/22/2009 at 3:40 PM #

Iowa would have been interesting because they were the opponent in maybe the best-played NC State game I ever watched (Roy Marble vs. Rodney Monroe in the NCAAT, 2OT classic) and the worst-played one (the challenge clunker that we lost 45-42).

  20. wufpup76 04/22/2009 at 3:55 PM #

Yes – we have played N’Western.

It was the infamous ice storm or whatever back in ’03 or something.

There were about 2,000 people there (you can laugh at me b/c I was one of them), and we beat the hell out of them. I remember it well not only b/c of the storm, but they had a guy on their sqaud with the last name of “Seacat” that the entire crowd was yelling to see play.

He finally got in when we were up by about 30 points and proceeded to drill back-to-back 3-pointers … It was an interesting night.

  21. leewolf 04/22/2009 at 3:56 PM #

    Wufpup beat me to it.

At least we are in this year guys. Cannot wait to see us take on another weave-and-heave team…

  22. Noah 04/22/2009 at 3:58 PM #

We played Michigan a couple of times, didn’t we?

Noah- Yep. Although I hate wikipedia (and won’t let my students touch it), this appears to have a nice summary of the challenge to date.

^Yes … Lost @ UM and beat them at home in Sidney’s first season.

IIRC, teams we have played in the challenge –

    Purdue (2)
    Michigan (2)
    Penn St. (2)
    N’Western
    Ohio St.
    MSU
    Iowa

Again, IIRC, we have yet to play IU, Minny, Wiscy, and Illinois

Edit: Nevermind … looks like WVWolf and Dr. BP have everyone covered
