I am so glad that Memphis came *this* close to winning a national title and then poof – they lost.

Do you have evidence he broke the rules at Memphis; how did you arrive at this conclusion? For such adamant statements you must have proof, not just envy.

And Memphis fans were disappointed not to win the NC, but they are ecstatic about their success and program,… and you would be too. Fans and teams that lose in the final four, and compete to go there regularly, are thrilled w/ their accomplishments. Your projection of either NC or worthlessness is absurd. Schadenfruede has it’s satisfaction, but when they get to the FF, and may again this yr, and have great recruits coming in, well, it may be misplaced.

Sorry to pick you out, but to run other programs and players down that have the success we want is unbecoming.

Rick – watching the N&O, blue belly fans, and the Bill Fridays of the world get in a huff would have made our success that much sweeter. We would all get more use out of our middle fingers, for sure.

FWIW, I did alot of research on Calipari when it looked 90% likely that he would be our next coach. I don’t believe he is or was crooked. He just plays the system to his best advantage – which is what every coach should do. Even had some choice quotes lined up from a guy named Hooker (his AD at UMass) that would have driven the Holes into a mad frenzy.

Now I feel depressed again. Tis never to be.

Whoa Smile – I do not envy Cal or Memphis at all.

For the record, nobody has put out any facts that there is any type of wrongdoing going on at Memphis under Calipari. But they did while Calipari was at UMass. UMass was a dormant program until Calipari came along and then all of a sudden they are getting Top 3 recruiting classes and the #1 recruit in the nation picks UMass of all places to go. Not one of the traditional big conference elite schools that were on tv all the time, but tiny little UMass in the A10 who nobody had heard from since when? Camby was paid to go there. You’ve got Google, look it up.

Memphis is the same type situation. Lax recruiting restrictions, dormant program. It doesn’t take much to connect the dots. It’s not hate, and it’s certainly not envy because in no way do I want to win at all costs like that. I simply like to see cheaters get theirs. Now, am I envious of the Holes, Duke, Kansas – programs like that? You bet. But certainly not a program like Memphis or a coach like Calipari.

And when did I ever infer that it’s either “NC or worthlessness”? I agree, that is absurd – and I never f’n said it. Imagine how Houston felt in ’83 – that’s how I imagine how Memphis felt last year. They had the championship wrapped up. It was theirs, and then it was snatched away – that would hurt anybody. They had a great season, no doubt – but to taste the Holy Grail and then be denied it hurts worse than all. And yeah, I’m glad it happened to that Coach and that program. And I don’t really give a sh*t if they make the FF again this season or not (they won’t).

I know you don’t like me or my posts, but to twists my words or my logic is beyond silly.

“First you lose close, then you win close, then you win big.”

“I am so tired of this quote. And it is NOT a guarantee. IF it happens that is probably the way it happens but I am tired of people pulling it out.”
    .
I’m curious, Rick, why are you tired of it? Does it go against some agenda? Does the thought of the Pack going thru this process, upset you? Had you rather sink into the hopeless abyss created by such statements as, “we never will win big” or “the light at the end of the tunnel for the Wolfpack is a train.” In life we create our own reality. I am creating the reality “First you lose close, then you win close, then you win big” and it has to be said more than once to create it. Life is the way we say it is. Think not? I have a parable for you:
    .
At an umpires convention 3 umpires, a rookie, a journeyman and a master umpire, were discussing how they called balls and strikes.
The rookie said, “I call ’em the way they are.”
The journeyman said, “I call ’em the way I see ’em.”
The master umpire said, “They ain’t nothin’ ’til I call ’em.”
    .
I’m guilty of saying more than once, “First you lose close, then you win close, then you win big” because I’m creating a reality that Wolfpack fans such as myself can live in other than the morass of negativity. These are tough times for NCSU alums. I got enough doubts of my own, give me something you believe in.

I hate that the comment section on this blog is slowly turning into a slightly better version of the Pack Pride message boards.

It used to be so full of thought out posts or posts with quality information to share. It seems there are a lot of posts now that are just posts “to see yourself post.”

The quality discussion is still here, but it’s hidden among tons of bickering and what are essentially re-posts of the same.

Can we go “underground” to avoid further decay?

My question still stands to those who have better internet search engine skills than I:

HAS ANY TEAM BEFORE EVER PICKED UP THE TOP 3 RECRUITS IN THE COUNTRY IN ONE YEAR?

“I hate that the comment section on this blog is slowly turning into a slightly better version of the Pack Pride message boards.”
    .
I take it since this is right under my post, that this is in part reference to my having repeated the Bowden quote: “First you lose close, then you win close, then you win big” I’ve never been to PackPride boards, so I don’t know but perhaps what I have to say is more appropriate there.

  7. GAWolf 03/09/2009 at 5:34 PM #

It’s not necessarily pointed at you Greywolf for that quote or any particular quote. Though you have participated in this “you’re with me or you’re against me” type rhetoric and others who talk about “agendas” etc. That’s a PP type of ideology. In the past this place has been tolerant of differing opinions as long as they’re back with facts, stats or reason. I’m not saying what you did was any worse than any other, and truthfully it wasn’t directed at you. I’ve just noticed that just in general we’ve had a slow deterioration of quality posts on this blog. The content, as always, as remained superb. I’ve always looked at the user commentary here to be significantly better than on other NC State boards as well. I could be totally wrong, but it just seems to me there’s more emotional rhetoric and pointless posts here these days.

In a game thread I participate in that sort of talk, so maybe I’m as guilty as anyone. But as far as addressing a particular topic that can be fleshed out and examined it seems we’re losing some substance.

I love Statefansnation.com and that’s the reason: Its users seem to be more versed in the art of reasonable dialect and more educated on the subject matter than some other sports blogs. I hate to think that is changing.

I made the progression like many here, and some go back further than me. I started with ACCBOARDS.COM, the to State Fans, then to Pack Pride, then here… each switch being because I was looking for more appropriate commentary on the subject matter as opposed to ridiculous name calling and statements without factual support.

  8. Greywolf 03/09/2009 at 9:34 PM #

    GAWolf,
Thanks for clearing up my question and thank you for the civil manner in which you did it. I don’t know if Rick will read this but if I could reverse time, I would go back and clean up the “agenda” reference in my comments. I was and am interested in what about the Bowden quote annoys him but I for sure didn’t put it in a way that would solicit a reasonable response and for that I apologize.
    .
I’m guilty of commentary without factual support but in my own defense, I’d say that I do attempt to construct reason to support my comments. On the other hand sometimes by the time I get to the bottom reading comments, I have lost track of the main theme of the thread and am reacting to something.
    .
Perhaps the circumstances have changed and with our football program seemingly turning the corner our discussions are tend to be directed toward “is Sid making it or is Sid going to make it?” and the jury is obviously still out. If in fact this reasoning has validity, this genre of discussion will tend to be more emotional and less factual especially as State Fans attempt to look underneath the surface to see if progress is actually being made. I have seen statistical “evidence” pointing to both “he is” and “he’s not” going to make it and I’m not convinced that those stats really prove much of anything except stats can be used to promote a lie.
    .
I’m with you on one matter, game day threads are the place to piss and moan about whatever you feel like. GAW, I don’t know if you are one of the site administrators but if you are, thank you for the work you do. Good night.

  9. Greywolf 03/09/2009 at 9:57 PM #

    GAWolf,
I meant to say that the increase in readership dilutes the contribution of the core of members we both enjoy reading so much. It’s not unlike living in the RTP in the 50s and 60s — We had a quality of life, great educational institutions, etc., and we attracted a lot of high quality businesses, research institutions, etc. Now Cary is said to be an acronym for Containment Area for Relocated Yankees. This is still a great place to live but not necessarily for the same reasons that attracted the growth. And Lord knows we can’t go back and I doubt if SFN can go back.

  10. GAWolf 03/10/2009 at 8:33 AM #

I’m actually not one of the guys who maintain or contribute to this site. I’ve just found over the years that this site is free from a lot of the things that make it almost impossible for me to follow some of the other message boards. The product here is head and shoulders above the others and that includes most of the user commentary.

You just don’t see the “HERB SUCKS!” or “SID SUCKS!” posts here like you do elsewhere. Someone might not like Sid, but they’ll usually give decent reason as to why and that makes it conversation worthy. You are correct in that as the Sid debate carries on, minus some immediate and obvious improvements to our on-court product, that sort of rhetoric will increase.

And that’s a shame, because SFN is one of the better sports blogs going… for any sport or school.

I’m not a big fan of Cary either, for whatever that’s worth. It has it’s place in the world, and I’m just glad it’s there so as to not further dilute the greatness of Raleigh.

  11. Greywolf 03/10/2009 at 12:06 PM #

    GAWolf,
Although you are not an administrator let me acknowledge you for “ownership” of SFN and standing for the quality of the site. More of us would do well to be concerned about whether or not our posts were “forwarding the conversation.” That is something I have taken on for myself. GO PACK!!
