Coaching Carousel Comments (Updated 3/18)

Wednesday, March 18th
Great conversation going on here! So, we thought that we would just elevate this entry back to the top and add this link from Jeff Goodman at Fox Sports to the mix.

He has listed the 12 coaches that could get hot and make a jump due to either their appearance – or performance – in the Big Dance. These are all non-BCS guys except the interim staff at Arizona.

First name on the list is none other than:

Sean Miller, Xavier – He’s been a commodity in the past year or two, but sources told FOXSports.com that the hefty buyout has dropped considerably. He’s done a terrific job overachieving with the current Musketeers group and should have a shot at Virginia or anything else that opens in his comfort zone.

Tuesday, March 17th
By now, you probably know how much we love the coaching carousels. This is the time when programs can be made and/or destroyed. The potential fallout of Virginia’s firing of Dave Leitao has added a layer of complexity and interest to this year’s carousel for us all as it is no secret that our own Sidney Lowe and Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt now enter next season as the two coaches with the hottest seats in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The following comments come from an article today from Duke graduate, Seth Davis.

We already have four openings at prominent programs: Alabama, Arizona, Georgia and Virginia. What do all of those schools have in common? They’re all big state schools. We all know these schools are facing budget crunches, but aside from Arizona, their administrations made the decisions to create these openings. I don’t think they would do that unless they were ready to throw out some big money to find replacements.

Taking Arizona out of the mix for the moment, the two biggest names that will be mentioned are Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Missouri’s Mike Anderson. Should Anderson be inclined to leave Missouri, Alabama would seem to be an obvious choice since he’s from the state, but Georgia has a dynamic young athletic director in Damon Evans, and many in the business believe that is the better job because there are more players in that state. I think it is highly unlikely that Capel would leave Oklahoma for Alabama or Georgia. Yes, he’s about to lose Blake Griffin to the NBA, but freshman guard Willie Warren is probably coming back, and he’ll be joined next season by two McDonald’s All-Americans. Plus, Capel works for arguably the best AD in the country in Joe Castiglione. I’m sure he is prepared to do whatever he can to keep Capel at OU.

Virginia, however, is another story. Capel grew up in Virginia, his wife is from Raleigh, and of course he played in the ACC for Duke. Virginia is a first-rate university, it has a brand new arena and an excellent recruiting base. Plus, if you finish third in the ACC, they build you a statue. It will be awfully difficult for Capel to give up the success and job security he has in Oklahoma, but if he does, this would be the kind of situation that could be worth it. So stay tuned.

If Virginia doesn’t hire Capel, I think they’ll go after Tubby Smith. Tubby, in fact, is still on Arizona’s radar screen. I think Smith would be interested in both those jobs, but I do not see him at Georgia or Alabama. A lot of people are speculating that VCU’s Anthony Grant is going to be in the mix at Georgia, but from what I’m hearing, Grant is a longshot for that job at best. I’ve also heard that USC’s Tim Floyd might be a candidate at Alabama, but I find it hard to believe he will go there. Not only did Floyd just get a commitment from Renardo Sidney, one of the best high school players in America, but he’s a low-key guy who likes nothing more than being able to walk into a restaurant and have nobody recognize him. He certainly won’t have that in Tuscaloosa.

Otherwise, I still believe the Arizona vacancy is Mark Few’s to turn down. While the decision won’t necessarily come down to money, Arizona is going to have to demonstrate a commitment to Few that goes beyond his own salary. Right now, Gonzaga flies a charter to many of its road games, and Few has the use of a private plane for his recruiting trips. For a man who is so devoted to his wife and three young children, that is no small issue. If Arizona can’t lock down Few, then I’m hearing the school is likely to go after Tubby Smith or Reggie Theus. The sleeper? UNLV coach Lon Kruger, who is familiar with that area of the country, won’t cost too much money and, most important, is a great coach who spent time in the NBA. You cannot overstate how big of an asset a pro background is with prospective recruits.

I usually try to avoid speculating on jobs that are not vacant, but unfortunately that is part of the job. That said, I can tell you that all eyes in the college basketball world are on Lexington, Ky. While it may be hard to believe that the school would get rid of Billy Gillispie after two years, I am getting indications that athletic director Mitch Barnhart could very well be moving in that direction. There is a concern that if Gillispie comes back, many of his players will either turn pro or transfer. One well-placed source told me last week that the decision to remove Gillispie was already “done.” I believe that was overstated, but Barnhart’s relative silence on this matter has been deafening. I left a message for Barnhart over the weekend and my call was returned not by him, but by an athletic spokesman, who naturally told me Barnhart had no comment on the matter. If Barnhart thinks he can wait another few weeks until Kentucky is done playing to resolve this matter, he is sorely mistaken.

(sarcasm warning)…I am just wondering who in the hell would want to coach at Kentucky? Those fans are crazy! Obviously they won’t be able to attract any good coaches after the way they have run away a National Champion in Tubby Smith and now pressured Gillispie after just two years. This is probably a lot like Indiana who ran away a great guy in Mike Davis (who took the Hoosiers to the National Championship game). Obviously, these horrible fans are ruining these once great programs. No good coaches will want to work somewhere that wants to win so badly.

As someone who lives in Kentucky and follows UK with some regularity, let me say unequivocally that we do NOT want Billy G. The man is not a good coach and is a huge condescending d-bag. Kentucky has consistently underachieved since he arrived in Lexington. Moreover, fans in Raleigh did not like Herb’s personality because he was too gruff….well let me tell you, by comparison Herb looks like Oprah. Billy G would be an absolutely horrible fit. With all due respect BJD…I would take a hard look at him before you beat that drum.

I’m suprised there no mention of Sean Miller at Xavier for any of the jobs. I know UVa has been burned with Xavier coaches in the past though. I still believe Sean Miller is the best bet to take over once the “Sid Lowe Experiment” ends.
From what I’ve read and heard the Millers’ embraced living in Raleigh and he pretty much left b/c he could hold his own and he was tired of coaching under Sendek.
Miller was never associated with the Princeton-offense at State so we know he would not install that. I think the fact that he coached under Sendek scares some people but IMO Miller was the better coach on the floor when Sendek was the head coach.

I beleive Miller has a contract going to 2013 with Xavier but a coaching job at State in the ACC with a great fanbase, nice facilities, family atmosphere, and more money would probably be hard for Miller to turn down at State.

Agree with wolfmans brother – down with Billy G. Not a follower of UK b-ball but, from the negativity associated with the ‘relationship’ between the Cats and Billy G, do feel this is a train wreck we need no part of, even if it seems like a potential ‘quick fix’ on the surface.

I also don’t think Capel would leave OU, not at this time – he keeps winning there, he might eventually supplant everyone’s shoe-in to inherit the Duke program (Dawkins). It’s hard to imagine K ever stepping down, but he’ll pass Knight sooner than later, so his ride into the sunset may be closer than many of us think (just a hunch)!

Thanks the gods that State isn’t having to go through this crap this year.

  5. Alpha Wolf 03/18/2009 at 9:32 AM #

The only reason I can think of that Sean Miller isn’t mentioned is because he is content where he is at. That never stops mentions though, so it is curious.

  6. kyjelly 03/18/2009 at 9:35 AM #

^ What crap? Do you mean going through crap, as in trying to find a competent coach to run a basketball program?
Oh yes thank the god’s we don’t have to worry about that crap this year? WTF ?

  7. Clarksa 03/18/2009 at 9:55 AM #

“The Wolfpack has tried to re-invent the wheel two times too many with their last two men’s basketball hires. We’ve looked at this thing too much like a marriage where we’re committed for life, and it shouldn’t be that way. We ought to be able to hire someone with the idea that if in 3 years he doesn’t have things turned around, he’s outta here. If it works in Chapel Hill, it’ll work here.”

    You can’t be serious?

If a Rick Barnes or John Calipari wouldn’t come last time, what the hell kind of coach do you think we would get if we fired someone every three years? If you think we looked stupid in our last coaching search, try a search every three years and we’ll look worse.

If it works in Chapel Hill, it’ll work here? They fired a jackass and replaced him with a hall of fame coach and even that jackass could recruit to Chapel Hill…if fact, he recruited the players that won him the national championship.

  8. nav 03/18/2009 at 10:14 AM #

This is the way life works as a State fan: VA fires current coach->VA hires greatest coach ever to walk on hardwood from ASU->VA beats UNC for ACC turny title->NCSU fans living in the local media area get to hear everyday for the rest of ours lives what losers we are for “running off” Mr Princeton-style->NCSU finishes 9th in league play->NCSU coach gets lifetime contract for improving program.

  9. Packman02 03/18/2009 at 10:18 AM #

    ^^
Amen. Plus, like it or not, perception is everything. The Hole can fire at will every three years and that will still be ‘every coach’s dream destination’, per the braniacs of the AP and local ‘media’ outlets…

NC State, on the other hand, has no reason to generate high expectations or demand accountability for failure to meet said expectations because it has a lunatic fan base that has a history of running off great coaches…per that same ‘brain trust’….

  10. packof81 03/18/2009 at 10:20 AM #

I’m with wulfpup. I’d love to see Bob Knight run the program. And wulfpup is right. There’d be no empty seats.

  11. buttPACKer 03/18/2009 at 10:40 AM #

    clarksa,

i don’t think he means literally fire the coach every three years, just that there is no reason to give a poorly performing coach 5 years–or even 4–to BEGIN to make progress.

I agree totally with him! A GOOD coach can take the most ramshackle of teams, and squeeze SOME progress out of them. If after 3 seasons SIGNIFICANT progress has not been made, well then, it’s time to try something else.

  12. Par Shooter 03/18/2009 at 10:54 AM #

redfred, I think your theory that the folks most disappointed in Lowe all loved Herb has been thoroughly debunked but just in case I’d like to join the folks stating that I wanted Herb gone after year 4 and think we’d be smart to oust Lowe tomorrow. It’s about having standards – I had them for Herb and I have them for Sid. Neither met my standards and at that point I think it’s time to move on.

  13. old13 03/18/2009 at 11:36 AM #

I’ve been reading/posting here and on the recruiting sites for about 10 years. I’ve watched the hiring and firing of Amato, the mediocrity of BB under you-know-who accepted by “management,” followed the very-well documented (mostly on this site) stagnantly poor performance of Wolfpack athletics in general, and read/posted zillions it seems of related rants, raves, analyses, critiques, lambasts, etc. It’s like Ground Hog Day (the movie) – it’s the same old thing over and over again. We all know the root causes of the problem. And there seems to be alot of us, with more coming to the realization day-by-day, who are fed up with it. But can Wolfpackers, alumni, WPC members, etc. not organize sufficiently to get the attention of somebody in a manner that will effect a change. Or is this all we have to look forward to for the next several decades! Personally I’m tired of it. But I don’t know what to do. I’ve stopped giving money. I’ve sent letters and emails. Does anybody have an answer? Or is it time to just totally give it up?

  14. Alpha Wolf 03/18/2009 at 12:16 PM #

If a Rick Barnes or John Calipari wouldn’t come last time, what the hell kind of coach do you think we would get if we fired someone every three years?

First of all, I don’t think we are going to get a Hall of Fame sort of fellow to come here with the program in disarray like it is. I just don’t — we’re NC State and to my knowledge we have never hired a HOF caliber coach not named Tom O’Brien.

That said, NC State has had a good record getting some up and coming type coaches, like Iona’s head coach, for example.

  15. Alpha Wolf 03/18/2009 at 12:19 PM #

we’d be smart to oust Lowe tomorrow. It’s about having standards – I had them for Herb and I have them for Sid. Neither met my standards and at that point I think it’s time to move on.

Sid deserves one more year, IMO. Let’s see how he fares with an entire team composed of “his” players. Even Horner is rightfully his because he re-recruited him post-HS.

Plus from a PR standpoint, four years is the floor of reasonable. Keep in mind NC State is fighting a negative perception and that at least half of the country thinks we fired HS. It doesn’t help that Carolina Fan (who collectively seem to haunt every website on the net) perpetuates that myth with the same fervor as they do the Parade and other palpable falsehoods.

“I’m with wulfpup. I’d love to see Bob Knight run the program. And wulfpup is right. There’d be no empty seats.”

^packof81, while I appreciate it – it was actually 61Packer who pushed this 🙂

I’m not saying I’m for or against it, but wanted to give credit where it is due. I think 61Packer has been on that train (the Bobby Knight train) for a while …

  17. frankiepack 03/18/2009 at 12:47 PM #

Yes Iona’s head coach indeed! So the PR standpoint does not really wash.
This is college coach’s we are talking about ,they would jump over do whatever it takes to better their positions. Just go to Iona and ask them about V? Go to fordham and see what Digger did to them. Pitino hung on Hubie Brown’s coat tails than stapped him in the back to take over his job. I know I was around than and for awhile before than as well.
College coach’s self promoters, whether you are talking HOF caliber or up and coming. The fault here lies in the man who hired Sid as much as the results are on Sid. I am or never was pro Herb but gun to my head a choice between Sid or Herb coaching my team,it’s a no brainer Herb. Please not much of a choice but that is how it is.
Look at it this way Herb left here good riddance I said but he got a job asap as a head coach. If and when in 2015 they decide to let Sid go I do not seeing any major college team offering him the head coaches job.I see him being a second level asst on some nba team perhaps.
I can see the argument for another year perhaps but at what cost letting a Anthony Grant go? Who on paper even at VCU has just as strong or stronger talent than we do.
I just don’t see things getting any better after watching Sid coach this last 3 years. Good lord he got a damn good check for 3 years here and if Sid was somewhere else with these results he would be long gone end of discussion.

  18. primacyone 03/18/2009 at 12:54 PM #

I just checked all the boards and news sites.

It seems Lee Fowler is still employed at NCSU.

    Dang it.

  19. BassPacker 03/18/2009 at 1:18 PM #

I don’t think wanted to see the basketball program succeed and via for ACC championships means I’m a Herb Lover or Sid Basher. It means I’m a NCSU fan. I can (just barely) remember the David Thompson era and most of the Coach V run. I want to have the same feeling I have sitting in my LTR seats at Carter Finley as I do in the RBC. Over the last 3 – 5 years, I’ve felt my money would be better spend buying lottery tickets than basketball seats. So I spoke with my wallet, I canceled my seats at RBC. Can you ever remember a time when the RBC was so empty during ACC games?
I think you can judge if a coach is gonna be the deal in just his second or third year, Sid just seems to be asleep at the ship. You can almost see a parrallel to Sid and Amato, great bon voyage while taking on water more and more each year. Amato had problems with recruits and keeping assistants, Sid seems to be having issues with retaining recruits, Leslie is only the beginning as was Wall and Favors. Someone has to take the blame here, I don’t buy the theory he’s using Herbs guys. A good coach could work with the talent given and atleast show progress. A good example that Sid is over his head was the opening ACC round game against UMD. Once Williams went to the 2-3 zone, Sid had no answer, you could chalk the “L” in the column early into the second half.

Did Sid show progress this year, IMO..NO. Can anyone who follows Wolfpack basketball honestly think we will be better next year under Sid? I say stop the bleeding now, the experiment didn’t work. What are we gonna lose if we let Sid go now, recruits? They are already leaving.

  20. Lock 03/18/2009 at 1:24 PM #

Is there really someone trying to say that the people who want Lowe gone are Herb lovers?

    Really.

Oh wait, it’s redfred, never mind.

Also, Bobby Knight coaching at State? That’d be the perfect tombstone to a program that’s trying its hardest to die.

Lowe, I’m wishing you the best of luck one more year. But it’ll be dance or done. I’m no longer sure he’s the guy for us, but the parallels drawn to the FSU program aren’t to be sneezed at. One more year.

Least there’s Ariz. State to cheer for this year.

Seriously though, this blog is THE PLACE for negativity. And don’t you dare express an opinion contrary to the commonly held.

  21. whitefang 03/18/2009 at 1:25 PM #

Clarksa, under that logic then UVa should have kept Leitao since they aren’t UNC either? And we should keep Lowe how many more years no matter what the string of bottom of the ACC finishes he has? Maybe 4 or 5 years will be enough for us?
In my opinion, which admittedly ain’t worth much, Lowe is a poor college basketball coach and I further think his chance of improving our program are remote at best. He is here to begin with for one reason – he once helped us win a championship as a player. He is not here because of his coaching resume.
He remains here for next season for 2 reasons – 1. He once helped us win a championship as a player and 2. We are NC State and our admin doesn’t use actual success as a measuring stick.
Still we are going to give him at least one more year because that what we do. And in the greater scheme of things its not going to affect most of us since one or two more years of hopeless sucking on top of 3 straight years of hopeless sucking and countless previous of the same are not going to kill any of us.
But I admit I am one of those that says 3 years of what I’ve seen is enough. I may be proven wrong by this time next year, and since he ain’t going anywhere I hope I am.

  22. Clarksa 03/18/2009 at 1:58 PM #

If Leitao had been a “nice guy” he would still be at UVA…his firing is a result of him being a complete jackass complete with rumors of player revolt (think Doherty) so you can’t compare our situation to their situation.

On paper, Lowe was absolutely a “poor choice.” However, a lot of people seem to be holding that against him when all he did was say yes to a great job offer. I personally think Coach Lowe is paying the price from certain fans for the last 20+ years of being more or less a doormat in college basketball. In all likelihood, Coach Lowe will be here at least 2 more year unless we have another year like last year, or he ceases to be that “nice guy” by doing something stupid off the court.

  23. buttPACKer 03/18/2009 at 2:07 PM #

^”Seriously though, this blog is THE PLACE for negativity. And don’t you dare express an opinion contrary to the commonly held.”

When referencing the state of NC State Athletics (save football), there is NOTHING BUT NEGATIVE! If you want to blow smoke up someone’s panties, fine, but if you’re honest, there is nothing positive happening.–again, except for football!

State is pushing for last, or near last, in almost any statistic regarding the ACC. WHAT IS POSITIVE? Please, tell me.

  24. buttPACKer 03/18/2009 at 2:13 PM #

    Clarksa,

coach lowe isn’t “paying the price” because

State has been the doormat for 20 years. . . It’s because after 3 years, we’re showing no real signs of moving from the doorstep! I was behing lowe–completely–until this season.

You can’t stay relatively stagnant for this long, and not expect results. I don’t care if all the players aren’t “his.” Somethings gotta give.

  25. packalum44 03/18/2009 at 2:35 PM #

It seems there are many variables involved in coaching that affects their performance. Some are outside their control. Sometimes these variables make a coach’s performance better than otherwise. Therefore there are coaches whose success, such as Grant, may actually be luck. A team hires this guy and he fails. Its very possible.

However, talent is talent. Coaching is no different. You know it when you see it. Grant passes the eye test in my book.
