RTC: Seth Curry could save Lowe’s job?

We’ve been really humming here at SFN the last few weeks as there is an awful lot of NC State Basketball news out there for a team that failed to make the NCAA Tournament. (We hope that you are passing the word to all of your friends that they need to be visiting us more often!)

  • This entry looks at the 2009-2010 Wolfpack
  • This entry highlights a lot of the roster changes and includes some fantastic analysis and conversation.

It was announced yesterday that Seth Curry, the nation’s #1 scoring freshman and Stephon Curry’s brother, plans to transfer from Liberty to seek a school where he can compete at a higher level.  Rush The Court has all that you need on the topic including some interesting analysis.

After being lightly recruited out of high school (when will scouts and college coaches learn), Curry led all freshman in scoring at 20.2 PPG. Curry has not listed any of his potential choices and college coaches are not allowed to comment on potential transfers so at the very least Seth will keep college basketball message boards abuzz for the next couple of weeks.

When you read the entry you will see the news that it appears Curry may be ACC-bound.

Any guesses on where he is headed? There are a couple interesting potential legacy destinations: Davidson (replace his brother) or Virginia Tech (his father’s alma mater–helping Seth Greenberg save some face and get in the NCAA tournament, but that bridge may have been burned). Or will Seth go to another big-name program? There are plenty of other programs that could use a guy who averaged over 20 PPG as a freshman and averaged 25 PPG on 55% FG in 2 games against ACC opponents (Clemson and Virginia) this year. I would think he would want to stay relatively close to home (Charlotte area) and be in a starring role at a place where he could take over in a year so I would think that would exclude a place like UNC or Duke, but I could see him at Wake Forest or NC State (potentially saving Sidney Lowe’s job) particularly since all of their current stars leaving by then.

RTC says the following more specifically about NC State’s program:

NC State: This would be fairly close to home and at a big-name program albeit one that has fallen a few notches since they let Herb Sendek go. This would have to be a huge addition for a program that has fallen to the #4 program in the state (possibly lower) and could save Lowe’s job.

I haven’t had any time to analyze Curry’s potential fit with the Wolfpack’s roster, although on the surface I think I would be very pleased with a de facto recruiting class in 2010 of Ryan Harrow, CJ Leslie and Seth Curry. Suddenly the Wolfpack’s roster would be very well balanced with skilled players at almost every position and the only glaring hole potentially being the need for a tall athletic wing forward (that may end up being Richard Howell if he expands his game).

JUST FOR FUN, here is how the Wolfpack’s roster COULD look:

I forgot to add Julius Mays into the equation for 2010.

A potential roster for 2010 would include Mays, Gonzalez, Brown, Ingram, Harrow, and Curry. That’s a sweet guard rotation!

  3. kyjelly 03/26/2009 at 9:50 AM #

I do see where some here are moving away to one more year, now to lets see what happens in 10-11 season.
When will Sid ever be held accountable? Leslie is not coming here, the 7’aussie ain’t coming here,Wall is not coming here, why would Curry come here? He has a very savy support group his dad is a Va tech grad, his brothers coach may end up at UVA,if any of the other in state schools show interest we move down his list. Why would he come to a place that has not shown signs of improvement lately,a probable “lame duck” coach.
So if all this were to come true and everything feel into place our way it would be great.
But,I am not a whole lot optimistic about things.

    Who is Ingram???

^^^ED89: “A lot of p’od Wake fans” I see and why are you not p’od being a Sid supporter?

Firstly, we don’t have three NBA first round picks on our team. Secondly, we were never ranked #1 in the country this year. Thirdly, I’m as disappointed as anyone about the last three seasons, but just spouting off that Sid can’t coach and needs to go is not very productive or accurate IMO. I’ll add that Dino may or may not be able to coach at this level. The collapse may or may not be all on him. I’m not going to cast judgement on him OR SID at this point. I think we’ll know alot more about both coaches this time next year.

  6. old13 03/26/2009 at 9:57 AM #

To even fathom that Curry could, by himself, save any coach to me is ludicrous. If any one player could have impacted Sid as a coach it was JJ Hickson. Had Sid been able to build a true “team” with JJ, it would have paved the way to entice other top players to NCSU. Instead it turned out to be a clear case of Sid’s inablility to manage personnel and mold players into a coherent unit, playing as a team, which has continued to plague him and is, obviously, impacting recruiting. It is clear that Sid is still much on the learning curve. Whether or not he can move up on it enough to recruit and mold a fully functional team with ACC talent remains to be seen. But I’m sure with with our AD/administration’s much-lacking management of Wolfpack athletics, we will have plenty of time to find out.

Bo Ingram. JUCO who originally signed with ECU out of Kinston.

“When I asked about Lowe’s job security, both people said, “He needs to make a significant step forward next year. He’s out of time.”

I won’t go into the details since it seems to irritate people so much.”
    `
What irritates this “people” is, for example, “I said 2 years ago he sucked and we need to get rid of him now. He sucks.” kind of self-important crap. Who gives 2 shits what some anonymous internet asshole said 2 years ago about the head coach at NCSU. It’s the nastiness and tone that makes tips the scale.
    `
(Not to Noah) Got a complaint or opinion? Great! Spell it out but leave off the insults and shit one might expect from a Tarhole or Dookie. And everyone who gets pissed at rude, insulting assholes for the nasty insults, is not drinking red cool aid. I’ve said in provious threads, I’m losing confidence in Sid, that his substitution management is suspect at best. This isn’t sweetness and light or blowing sunshine up his ass. I simple couch my criticism in the kind of language an ex-player who has lead the Wolfpack to a NC IMNSHO deserves. Getting upset about a lose or failure to make the NIT is not call for name-calling. And I for one don’t think SFN is so desparate for reader hits that calling out some child who can’t control himself and speak appropriately is all bad.
    `
Noah, apparently your sources are knowledgeable and sensible people. Most of us who are ticked by the nasty, smart-mouthed shit slung at Sid including redfred, I’d guess, have zero problem with the suggestion that Sid needs to make a significant step forward next year. If the significant step forward is not made, he will be out of time. What a significant step forward is has not been determined. I thought I saw a step forward this year, but I hesitate to say it was a significant step. The milestone of making the NCAAT seems to be fair. Should he not make it but what he does with what he has warrants the final year on his contract, I would have no problem with that. Mainly because of the message it would send to prospective coaches: You will get fair treatment at NCSU and if you fail here, it is on no ones shoulders but your own.
    `
Now Noah, how about you and redfred bury the hatchet. Both you guys are “on the same team.” No real need for grudges here amongst long-time SFN contributers. Got that, fred?
    `
That’s all for now. Strong post to follow. 😉

I believe it would be a huge sign of Sids NBA connections if he is able to sell Brandon Costner to an NBA team. IMO that would be the sell of the decade as i dont think Costner is an NBA player. But it would be worth touting to Dell and the likes if sid can get brandon an NBA offer

  11. Trip 03/26/2009 at 10:20 AM #

Seth Curry wouldn’t save his job, and honestly it would add to the current logjam of guards that we have already in 10′.

Javi, Mays, Brown, Harrow, Wood, Thomas, Williams, Davis and Curry. 9 players who can play the 1/2/3 position and 0 that can play the 4/5 although Thomas/Davis have the athletic ability to hang there for short periods.

We need BIG MEN… not little men. Lorenzo Brown if as good as advertised is probably just as good as Curry with more size.

Small side-note: I’ve learned that the predictions Noah makes tend to come true for some scary reason. So I think his “Sources” tend to be fairly accurate.

  12. Pack Leader 03/26/2009 at 10:23 AM #

what is the story behind ingram?? Will he be talented enough to contribute right away or is this just a bench player?? when will he be able to play for us?

  13. buttPACKer 03/26/2009 at 10:26 AM #

I’m sure Dell Curry understands the micron-thin ice that Sid is on right now. . . I think that could hurt our chances, significantly.

  14. Pack Leader 03/26/2009 at 10:28 AM #

I do agree trip. BIG MEN are needed…..

“curry would be a huge addition but it also brings into question
(again) the recruitment of Josh Davis”
    `
Say some more about that. Until you mentioned it, the thought never crossed my mind. BTW are you sure Davis was recruited? My impression was that Davis wanted to come to NCSU and Sid offfered a scholarship that opened up. Davis appears to be one of those who might continue to grow and top out between 6-8 and 6-10. As I am sure you are aware, there is as much as 3 years different in the physiological age of teenagers. I know personal experience is disdained here but so what. When I graduated from high school, I was 6-3 1/2 and weighed 155. I could tread water in a test tube and had to jump up and down and wave my arms to get automatic doors to open. A year later I was 6-6 and weighed 195. Another year later I weighed 220 and could have weighed 250 or 260 if I had worked out and tried to gain weiht.
    `
Davis is a good gamble except for those of us with crystal balls, no pun intended, who can look and see he is a failed project. Not loser as some would like to paint him, just not what we needed.

Does someone actually read redfred’s monolithic rants?
If a post goes more than two paragraphs I usually skim it.

RTC says the following more specifically about NC State’s program:

NC State: This would be fairly close to home and at a big-name program albeit one that has fallen a few notches since they let Herb Sendek go.

Herb Sendek left town in the dead of the night by his own choice like the Baltimore Colts. He wasn’t LET GO by NC State. Know one knows why he wasn’t let go on State’s terms but rather allowed to leave NC State for Arizona State and make the program look like crap nationally.

  19. Wolf Dog 03/26/2009 at 10:54 AM #

The talk among the money boys is everyone has agreed to give Sid two more years with no looking over his shoulder. We need recruits not a mass exit of recruits and a stable staff is the thinking. Sid is extremely likable in many circles and no one wants to burn bridges by not giving Sid a fair shake.

Herby got six years to find the NCAA tournament and inherted the program in worse shape than Herby in allot of Wolfpack supporters opinions. Sid was given a long term deal based on the fact that the AD, Sid, and others agreed it would take years and a long process to put NCSU on track to compete at the top level. With the knowledge that the fan base would not be as patient as the administration. Not only was our program headed for rebuilding years but changing the face of the program from a slow down princeton team to an uptempo team would take years to do so. Does anyone see McCauley, Fells, or Costner excelling in Willimas Fast Break offense. NO, they came to NCSU to play in a slow down game cause that is what they were suited for and where they could get playing time.

We all know things change, but if the Currys are considering NCSU ( and the talk is it is a consideration) it will be with full knowledge and promise from the AD that Sid will be the coach in 2 years.

Right now I hear no talk to let Sid go, he is 100% safe right now.

I look forward to the Spring Game and watching Glennon! Go Pack!

    ^^^^Good point, old13 – it’s a fair thing to say.

And Trip has a point … that’s a lot of similar-type players for 2 or 3 positions. I see this sort of like of a case in the NFL Draft: Do you draft (recruit) the best player available no matter what, – OR – do you draft (recruit) according strictly to your team needs?

I usually tend to favor drafting/recruiting to fill team needs, unless the talent is extraordinary and not to be passed up. I’m not entirely sure Seth fits that description, but in this case if I were on the coaching staff I would go for it. I believe the potential positives outweigh the negatives.

First and foremost, it would be a positive shot in the arm for your program. Not a job or program saver, but some positive news … we *need* positive news – probably moreso than any other factor in this offseason. The offseason is off to a rough start, to be polite.

Secondly, if Seth is anything like his brother he can/will hit clutch shots, create his own shot at times, and at the very least open things up for other players. When’s the last time we had a guy like that? I’ll admit that I only saw Seth play three times last season – I was impressed. There is some raw talent, some things that need to be worked on. But a decision made by him and his family to try and make a go of it at a higher D1 level is the right one IMO … the kid can make it at a higher level. With a year off to practice with a new team, he could be sharp for the ’10-’11 season.

Third, competition is a good thing. While it would be true that we would be “overstocked” at a few positions, this could easily change. It is the natural order of things. If Curry were to come here (and who knows – it’s speculation at best) and *IF* the staff (if they were still here) handled the team and personalities better things would probably work themselves out and you may even have a nice team. That’s a lot of *if’s* … But were Curry to come here and the staff manages to hang around for the next season, then if the team imploded like it did when JJ came on board then can you really survive *two* similar occurences?

If you’re Sidney and the staff, what is there to lose? You haven’t done the best of jobs in planning for the future to this point, so you do you cut your losses and try to start anew? You may already be entering a make-or-break year, so why not go for something positive? At worst you’ll have a lot of similar players and you’ll be on your way out … you may already be on your way out anyway if things don’t change rapidly. I would take this chance. But these decisions are part of why he is getting paid …

Don’t make this personal. We are glad to have Noah’s contributions to this site. We’re not banning redfred either. 🙂

“Sid and Dell played together in Charlotte and Sid was ass’t. at Cleveland where Dell also played…”

    Hmmm

Some of you need to find the original link to the Curry transfer. It says he grew 3″ last year, and doctors project he could have 3-4″ more before his spurt is over. That means he’s not a guard; and [potentially] causes no ‘logjam’ at guard.

Rather, we already have the ‘logjam’… Mays/Javi/Farnold are duplications with their own sets of liabilities. ANY OTHER guard with a more complete game, or a better shot, accelerates beyond any said logjam.

  24. sautz 03/26/2009 at 12:10 PM #

Whoa, that potential lineup could beat a third of the other ACC teams!

  25. tvp1 03/26/2009 at 12:14 PM #

Looks like Wake and State are the two most likely destinations for Curry. Katz says Curry wants to go to an ACC school in NC. Doug Gottleib reportedly said that he’s hearing Wake and State for Curry.

Getting Curry wouldn’t save Lowe’s job but it would be a nice PR boost and he can play.

We have a lot of options in recruiting right now. IMO, the best case realistic scenario (i.e., one not involving Wall) would be to get Curry and a JC big for this year (with Curry sitting out), then get Leslie, Cothron, or another big man who can play in the Harrow class. Without divulging premium info, we are scouting a JC big man who has the talent to help immediately.

That scenario would give us, in 2010-11,

    2010-2011
    1-Gonzalez (Sr)
    2-Smith (Sr)
    3-JUCO Big man (Sr)
    4-Thomas (Jr)
    5-Mays (Jr)
    6-Williams (Jr)
    7-Brown (So)
    8-Howell (So)
    9-Wood (So)
    10-Davis (So)
    11-Curry (So)
    12-Harrow (Fr)
    13-Leslie/Cothron (Fr)
