Cousins to Memphis; Is John Wall Next?

SI.com has the news and SLAM has the quotes and the N&O has it on Monday.

“Me and my family came to a decision after talking about it. We just thought it was the best place for me to be,” said Cousins this morning. “Everything about the school, the city, whole visit was impressive. I already liked Memphis, so the visit was just icing on the cake.”

“Winning a national championship, that’s my number-one goal [as a freshman next season],” stated Cousins. “Whatever Cal [Memphis head coach John Calipari] needs me to do, I’ll do it. However I have to fit in, I’m willing to do it.”

Expect Cousins, currently ranked second in the SLAM Fresh 50, to have a brief tenure at Memphis, as in one-and-done, if he plays up to his potential. A physical force in the paint, Cousins has a solid back-to-the-basket game, but is also capable of stepping out to hit mid-range jumpers consistently and put the ball on the floor well for a player of his size. In addition, he’s an excellent passer, both in the halfcourt and when making outlet passes to start the fast break, something Memphis excels at. If he commits himself to getting in tip-top shape and decides to dominate both ends of the glass, as well as providing a defensive presence at all times, his upside is as high as any player’s in the senior class.

Since he has all the tools to be an elite baller in the college game (and beyond), a motivator like Calipari and Memphis’ style of play should serve him well.

“He [Cal] just shoots straightforward with you,” said Cousins. “He’s a tough person, but also loves you and that’s what I was looking for.”

Now that Cousins is off of the Wolfpack’s radar the attention of many Wolfpack fans will turn to point guard phenom, John Wall.

Wall’s announcement could come at any time, but there has been whispering amongst college recruiting circles that the same Memphis Tigers who just landed DeMarcus Cousins may have emerged as a leader for Wall.

Just last week the N&O’s Luke DeCock wrote a fantastic article explaining how John Wall could be a success at NC State that would transcend whatever his on-the-court achievements. The article takes the form of letter to Wall and is something that you should definitely read if you have not.

It’s not like you could go wrong at either of those schools, but at N.C. State, you have a chance to do so much more.

You have a chance to make an impact that will last far beyond the one year you play there. You will be giving something back to the community where you were raised. And you will have a chance to play in the best league in the country, in front of all your friends and family.

[snip]

Perhaps more important, you’re only going to spend one year in college. At Memphis or Baylor, you will come and go like the wind. One plays in a mediocre conference, the other has a mediocre basketball history. N.C. State blows both away in both categories.

There’s a rich basketball tradition at N.C. State, but it needs a modern-day booster shot. Herb Sendek couldn’t do it, no matter how many times he went to the NCAA Tournament. You could, even if you stay for only a year.

As much as it helps N.C. State to have players like you (and Derrick Favors, who chose Georgia Tech) considering the Pack, if you actually played there you would raise the school’s profile among potential recruits who weren’t alive in 1983 and who don’t know Reynolds Coliseum from Reynolds Wrap.

That generation, your successors, would be thinking of you when they added N.C. State to their lists, creating a legacy that will last long after your first shoe deal expires.

Whatever you choose, there are no wrong answers. A wonderful basketball career stretches out before you. But it’s worth giving a second thought to staying home before you leave to head down that road.

Something that we have not yet covered in detail is the issue of Dwon Clifton and the potential ‘package deal’ for Wall. ESPN’s Outside the Lines recently ran a report on package deals that included a focus on Wall that can be seen by clicking here.

We expect the Wolfpack to probably sign two more players for next year’s recruting class – including at least one more post player. That player could be Australian, Jordan Vandenberg. Additionally, there is some speculation that State could move Julius Mays to a shooting guard position and still target a point guard in this upcoming class.

Missing on Derrick Favors and DeMarcus Cousins may mean that Coach Lowe’s biggest recruit next year may be Brandon Costner. Moving Costner back to the power forward position alongside Tracy Smith in the post could work well for both the Wolfpack and Costner’s development. This would allow State to free-up the point guard and wing positions for both the returning players as well as highly regarded recruits, Lorenzo Brown and Scott Wood. You can see the most recent comments and links that we have regarding Costner’s future plans by clicking here.

Let’s hope John read the piece in the N&O over the weekend. The one about the impact he would have on the program and the high-profile position he would have in a real conference. C-USA is podunk hoops, and Memphis and Calipari are nothing more than a sidebar in podunk hoops. They win lot because they play no one. They land recruits because they win games because they play no one.

I think John Wall is smart enough that he knows better than Cousins.

  2. kyjelly 03/09/2009 at 7:37 AM #

He is not coming here please, let’s move on.
We have problems let’s focus on them.

  3. kyjelly 03/09/2009 at 7:38 AM #

    ^Yes their league does suck,agreed.
But before you say they don’t play anyone take a look at who we are playing ooc.
To make matters worse I hear there are rumors that Leslie is going to back out of his agreement as well.

  4. Rochester 03/09/2009 at 7:48 AM #

Wall is afraid he won’t be good enough to beat out Javi so he is going to Memphis to play in a conference where he won’t have to face any competition.

Let’s take the Australian kid and get on with our lives.

  5. sautz 03/09/2009 at 7:55 AM #

That they may move Mays to SG is troubling news and I would guess thats why we haven’t seen him in so long. He has the physical ability to be a great PG.
I personally hope we don’t sign another PG this year. I would hope starting Javi with some occasional backup from Degand and maybe Brown would be enough for next year until we get Harrow in to get some backup minutes his freshmen year.
I think it’s best to save the scholly or go after a Sandi Marcius in the likely event Costner doesn’t come back.

  6. Rochester 03/09/2009 at 8:04 AM #

Mays looks like a good shooter, and if we go with a smaller lineup next year I like having him on the floor alongside Javi and CJ/Wood/Fergie, etc. When he came in he was described at times as a combo guard. Well, let’s let him play a little 1 and a little 2. I could see him growing a lot between his freshman and sophomore years as far as learning how to play at this level. He got his feet wet (though they’ve dried off over the last month) and I hope he plays more next year.

  7. DRW 03/09/2009 at 8:07 AM #

Wall is not coming here. So, I guess those that want to wait on Sid because he is a great recruiter can move on to another excuse for him.

I don’t think Sid can be a sucess as a coach in the ACC, and it is time for us to cut our losses and move on.

But, with Foulup as our AD, Sid will have plenty of time to prove to everyone else that is his not ACC material.

  8. choppack1 03/09/2009 at 8:21 AM #

If you’re wondering why it was important for Sid to win early, you probably don’t need to look any farther than what just happened w/ Cousins – and could still happen w/ Wall. Great players aren’t going to play for a program unless they think that program is going somewhere.

While it stinks to lose Cousins, it will be far more damaging if Leslie reopens his recruitment and doesn’t sign w/ us.

Right now, we need to sign a big man. I’m a little baffled that we are recruiting a PG since that would give us 4 players recruited to play this position in 2010 and 2011. I’d understand if Sid was playing an up-tempo pressing style and using all of his players – but he doesn’t. He’s using 8 guys, and he’s only using 8 guys.

  9. anti-smurf 03/09/2009 at 8:36 AM #

I’m not surprised at all about Cousins. I thought he was Memphis bound all the time. I really think we’re behind Memphis and Baylor for Wall as well. Sucks, but at this point – I’m done. I’m sick and tired of the “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” routine.

Spring practice starts in a week or so, and then I can get back to football…..

“Wall is afraid he won’t be good enough to beat out Javi so he is going to Memphis to play in a conference where he won’t have to face any competition.”

(giggle). Is this the Statefans version of sour grapes?

  11. blackdom 03/09/2009 at 8:43 AM #

Let’s face it as much as we all wished he would suceed Sid can’t coach on this level, for some reason people said he could recruit but it appears he has fallen short with that as well.
As far as Javi goes we have heard this all about he was the guy last year. I admit he played well down the stretch ,but he still handles the ball like there is a fuse on it. Against Miami he was the mvp for both squads.

SFN: We have a TOP TEN recruiting class this year without landing another player and are on the road to a similar class for the next season. How do you come to the conclusion that he is ‘falling short’ on recruiting?

  12. choppack1 03/09/2009 at 8:52 AM #

blackdom – You can’t really write him off yet. He HAS grown this year as a coach.

Does the existing data we have to evaluate him look encouraging? No.

Is there a chance the data will change? Yes.

If we don’t get Wall – and I’m not writing him off yet – we really need some kind of success to pitch for future recruits. Like I said, I think the most important recruiting item for this program right now is to find another big man for this year – and hold onto our 2 recruits for next.

  13. BJD95 03/09/2009 at 8:54 AM #

Yep, we can look forward to signing 2 more marginal role players in the 2009 class. Sigh.

I have a feeling that at this time next year, we will be debating whether winning 7 games in a weaker ACC constitutes improvement or not. I’m really looking forward to that discussion.

  14. wpackman33 03/09/2009 at 8:57 AM #

Just curious, does anyone have any solid evidence about CJ Leslie considering opening up his recruitment?
If not, then rumors are just rumors. Who cares.

The fact of the matter is, without Wall, or Cousins, or Favors, we still have a halfway descent recruiting class coming in next season. And while Wall would be great to get, he would be one and done and then where would we be in 2010-2011. We are getting good, solid players who are very athletic and who are going to be around for 3-4 years. This is the solid foundation that we need to build a good consistent program on, and what it takes to be successful in the ACC. Its easy for John Calipari to get these one and done players because their in C-USA. But in the ACC, to be CONSISTENTLY successful, you have to have a solid group of athletes to be win night in and night out.
So as far as Sids recruiting… I think he’s done a pretty good job. But what is recruiting without development. Thats the big things for me. Are these good recruits that we are getting going to improve and be great when they leave N.C. STate or will they be same(or worse) leaving as when they came in (i.e. see fells, Costner).

  15. BJD95 03/09/2009 at 9:00 AM #

Alternating bad recruiting classes with decent ones is not going to get it done at NC State. We’ll be stuck praying to get on the bubble, at best.

  16. thekind 03/09/2009 at 9:00 AM #

As long as Fowler is at State, does it really matter?

  17. Noah 03/09/2009 at 9:05 AM #

I have a feeling that at this time next year, we will be debating whether winning 7 games in a weaker ACC constitutes improvement or not. I’m really looking forward to that discussion.

I would say the odds are pretty strong that it will happen. Afterall, people point to this year as improvement simply because it wasn’t quite the disaster that last year was. Nevermind that the biggest non-conf. win was against…what NC Central? Lipscomb?

(Total parenthetical — but I love the argument about how awful it is that 6-6 will get you into a bowl in football, but basketball is totally pure. You lard up a basketball schedule with a dozen totally meaningless games, go 8-8 in your conferece — feeding off the very bottom of your conference for those eight wins — and go to the tournament. Whoop-de-doo)

But, to stay on topic, I’m reasonably certain that DeMarcus Cousins never visited NC State. So, I don’t know how much of a victor lap we should take on our “involvement” with him. Considering the details surrounding his “recruitment” and the details of proximity with Wall, I would say our best “miss” of the year was Derek Favors.

  18. MA Wolfpack 03/09/2009 at 9:08 AM #

If we do not get Wall, then I would be extremely interested to know why we did not get him. I understand that we did not get Favors because he wanted to stay at home….why does this not apply to Wall? Is it a personality difference between the two? NCSU certainly looks like a better place to play for 1 year than GT with immediate playing time, a coach with extensive NBA experience, great facilities, etc. What is the difference between these 2 situations?

Also, ACC assistant coaches have to be able to recruit. When do we start thinking about replacing an assistant coach with one that can actually land the top recruits?

Finally, I think we are quick to overlook how important landing Lo Brown was for NCSU. He should be the best guard on our roster since who….Hodge? The problem is that he is “old news”, and we know we need another star player to really make a difference.

  19. sautz 03/09/2009 at 9:08 AM #

Based on the last time State won 16 ACC games over 3 years I am projecting Lowe’s next 7 years will look something close to this:
    2009–2010 NC State 6-10
    2010–2011 NC State 5-11
    2011–2012 NC State 9-7
    2012–2013 NC State 9-7
    2013–2014 NC State 11-5
    2014–2015 NC State 7-9
    2015–2016 NC State 10-6

(the scary thing is I just had to change a 0 or 1 in each year’s number. Eerie.)

  20. Girlfriend in a Coma 03/09/2009 at 9:12 AM #

I don’t think Cousins has taken the SAT or ACT yet.

  21. SaccoV 03/09/2009 at 9:15 AM #

DRW, as for Sid’s recruiting ability, this class (2009) is only his 3rd for his career as a coach. How can you say that’s he not a good recruiter when his third class is ranked in the top-25 AND he pulled a top-notch kid who is playing very level in the NBA after ONE season in college? Two quick points: 1) You’re still under the assumption that kids who play high school basketball would consider playing at NC State the same kind of privilege that your enrollment was, and that is absolutely not the case. 2) You’re also assuming that a coach’s recruiting duties and responsibilities can be combined into making an appearance at the kid’s home or watching a game or two. Recruiting is a 24/7 job, and puts entirely too much pressure on both kids AND on coaches. Calipari has it very easy to recruit, as the afore-mentioned details bear witness. Lowe is working from the standpoint of having ONE current NBA player from his recruitment (Hickson). By comparison both Calipari’s first player drafted into the NBA from UMass was Loe Roe in 1995. That’s 7 years after Calipari took over. And of course Umass was the alma mater of Julius Erving and Al Skinner. He should have been able to get better players with that kind of history right?

  22. Wolf-n-Atl 03/09/2009 at 9:15 AM #

I think I read a stat that we had scored more in a 3-4 ACC span of games than any time since 1990 or some statistic like that. Sid has developed this team and obviously puts our guys in situations to score. Are we where we want to be, No – but we are making progression. I have been impressed with Javi & Horner lately. Many had written both off as hopeless. We have had a decent second half of the ACC season and that was with Costner having sub par games.

I’m hoping we can pull together to get a W over Maryland. I also hope Fells is able to return and play some meaningful minutes. It would be great to see him and Ben have another run in the ACC tournament to help lay the foundation for the program moving forward.

  23. Noah 03/09/2009 at 9:16 AM #

Also, ACC assistant coaches have to be able to recruit. When do we start thinking about replacing an assistant coach with one that can actually land the top recruits?

Larry Harris is supposed to be one of the better recruiters in the country. I could be wrong, but I think he’s the one who did the yeoman’s work on Howell and Brown.

“Yep, we can look forward to signing 2 more marginal role players in the 2009 class. Sigh.

Nor am I. It will show “improvement”…I’m hoping for something more definitive. I’d love for it to be in the positive direction – say, going 10-6 next year, w/ a nice tourney run or two. History shows that we rarely do get the kind of statement from our coaches – and if we do, it’s usually in the negative – see Amato’s and Les’s last years.

As far as recruiting – if Sidney brings in yet another mediocre PG, this will scream to me of desperation and disorganization. Since he’s been here, we’ve tried 5 guys that he’s tried at PG. Only of them has worked – and the other 4 have such gaping flaws in their game, he hasn’t played them at the two spot. As much as anything, this part of his recruiting and management has really bothered me. It’s a little bit like watching Spurrier w/ QBs but w/ a pretty major exception or two…

How can you say that’s he not a good recruiter when his third class is ranked in the top-25 AND he pulled a top-notch kid who is playing very level in the NBA after ONE season in college?

    1) I would be interested to see how well Lowe recruited if Harris wasn’t part of the staff.

    2) Please name the coaches at NC State who haven’t recruited well during their first five years.

Les Robinson pulled in two top-100 guys and two top-150 guys in the first class. His second class was a miss, I think, but his third class had three top-50 players (and would have had a fourth if we had the scholarship space). And his fifth class had a top-50 and a top-25 player.

Herb Sendek hit the ground running. Everyone remembers the players he brought in. From purely a rankings standpoint, he did significantly better than Lowe or Robinson.

Valvano actually struggled with his first two recruiting classes. His third class was the one with Lorenzo Charles in it, I believe (Charles was a top-100 guy. Gibbons called him the “Sleeper of the east.) The big catch in that class was Dinky Proctor, a McDonald’s All-American. The next class (V’s fourth) had Ernie Meyers (a top-15 player). We came in second on everyone that year. There were about 10 superstuds that we just missed on.

Norm Sloan took over in…what, 1967? So Burleson and DT would have been in his fourth and fifth classes?

    3) If your argument is that Lowe is a very good recruiter and this is backed up by his recruiting successes, then we must have good talent on our team. And that raises an entirely different question (that I’ll leave for someone else).
