Alums and Fans Under 25 Have Never Seen Glory. Will They Live Long Enough To Ever See It?

In the wake of yet another disappointing basketball season with yet another lackluster ACC Tournament one-and-done, I got to thinking about some of the current students, younger alumni and fans of NC State — and how much I feel sorry for them because they have rarely if ever gotten to feel the absolute joys that being a Wolfpack fan has afforded me through my lifetime.  Sure, a few wins against Carolina and Duke in hoops, a Gator Bowl in football, Philip Rivers, a few other things, but nothing like beating UNC in the finals of the ACC Tournament.  Nothing like beating the most-feared basketball team of its era in UCLA.  Nothing like standing in the Brickyard watching a huge bonfire, celebrating with thousands of other students and fans knowing that NC State had won a very unexpected but well-deserved national title in hoops.  When Lorenzo Charles put in the winning basket for his team in 1983, it wasn’t just for them…it was for all of us, his fellow students.  It sure felt that way that night, out there on Cloud 9.  And today’s kids…well, they’ve never come anywhere near that moment.  It’s as far away as Jupiter for them.

For me, all of those things were an integral part of my childhood and student life.  For today’s younger Wolfpackers, they’ve never gotten to experience anything remotely close to it.  At the rate things are going, they will probably be my age — squarely rooted in middle age — before it becomes even possible for them to see the things that we old farts saw and celebrated.

Think of it this way: a current undergraduate student was about two years old — or not even born — the last time NC State won an ACC Tournament.

If a fan is twenty-five, they weren’t born when NC State won the second of their two national titles in basketball.

If a fan is thirty years old, they’re too young to remember the last ACC title in football.  Jimmy Carter was still president of the United States.

That’s a long time, folks.  Too damned long if you consider that NC State is the largest university in the state of North Carolina and that it has a huge number of living alumnae in this state who give millions of dollars to help their beloved Wolfpack compete.

I recently had an exchange with a 26 year-old alumnus who said

“I am proud of my Pack no matter what. They have their moments and you know what if they win tonight [against Maryland]  I’ll be extremely happy .   They then play WF, which they have played before and beat once out of the two games. If State goes to the NIT who cares at least they are getting some post season play. I am a young fan and no I was not there for the 73-74 team i wasn’t even born and I was only 1 during the ’83 team. State has a tough time closing the deal on most games.  You know what I do tune into the Wolfpack radio because I support my team win or lose and I will continue to support the Pack no matter what.”

I know that in her heart of hearts, this young lady loves NC State every bit as much as I do.  I know that she goes to the games, or listens on the radio or watches them on television and cheers just as loudly as I do.  Thing is, she’s never gotten the payoff for her loyalty, even if she is young.  She’s never seen State’s players laughing while they cut down the nets, not even in the ACC Tournament.   She’s been conditioned to believe that an NIT berth is a “good season” for hoops.  In my day, getting dumped into the NIT was a booby prize not to be valued with much regard at all.  If she remembers 1989, it is through the eyes of a six year old.  You get old enough, and memories like that start seeming like a dream you had a long time ago that you can only remember glimpses of now.  She doesn’t even have that.

So I feel sorry for her, because her University has let her down.  She has to cheer for a school whose administration cashes her checks but gives her lip service to excellence in return.  She undoubtedly had to work as hard as any of us did for her degree, but unlike me, she cannot expect that the athletic teams that represent her school will reflect the excellence that goes on every day in the classrooms across campus.

And that is wrong.  She deserves better.

It is unfortunate that the school doesn’t see it that way.

She deserves better because she keeps the faith even when it seems hopeless.  I respect that beyond measure — a fan who stands by their team through times thick or thin.  That’s what a “true fan” is…not some Johnny-come-lately who jumps on the bandwagon when a team happens to have success.

Like I said, she deserves better.

For those young fans, I wish I could say it would be better soon, that State was on the cusp of a golden age.  Unfortunately I can’t.  All I can say is that I hope you live long enough for things to change and for new blood to take over that actually cares as much as you do.

I’ll be graduating from NC State in May and I’ve witnessed the most atrocious four years of Wolfpack sports since…well maybe some of the Les/MOC or Herb/MOC times? I was raised by parents who were teenagers in ’74 and recent graduates in ’83. My grandparents have told me numerous stories of going to games in Reynolds Coliseum with the smoke hanging in the air (back when they let you smoke in your seat) and Case’s teams dominating the competition. They instilled in us (my three older brothers and I) memories of the greatness they witnessed, an assurance from a young age that one day we would see the same thing. I’m still waiting.

That conditioning from a young age is what made me want to get rid of HWSNBN because I knew we could be better than that. Meanwhile many of my classmates and friends who had no knowledge of this history were perplexed at why we would run of a great coach who did such great things. Talk about an altered perception of greatness. Many of them still think I am crazy because of how vehemently I still defend the decision to rid ourselves of HWSNBN. But the fact is that this generation of Wolfpack fans, the ones who aren’t legacy students, have no concept of what the old greatness meant. They are pleased with middling bowl games and any post-season appearance in basketball. They don’t expect championships and are usually more focused on sticking it to UNC than anything else in a given season. Combine that with an administration that is focused on ruining the student experience at NC State and you have alums who are either disillusioned or content with this becoming a commuter school with little tradition, heritage, or expectation for athletic success. It is sad, and unfortunately I wonder if it spells doom for the future of the athletics program. Should we stay in this malaise by the time my generation is starting to be the primary money-givers and program supporters, I’m afraid we won’t ever get back to expecting real greatness.

I have been a State fan for 35yrs and I have no hope of living to see NCState ever win a ACCT again.
This nitemare has to stop! The effort this group of upperclassmen gave was the worst looking SHIT I have ever seen in my life,if my players in H.S. play like that I would have sat them so long their ass would have termites.
MY GOD, HAS THIS WHAT NCSTATE BB BECOME!
    FIRE LEE? HELL FIRE EVERYONE!
The tradition is truly over-20yrs of hell-well I recon this is the price we pay for the miracle 83 season.
How do you spell NCSTATE= E RAIL O VENT OR EASY WIN UNIVERSTIY.
    FOOTBALL OR BUST!

Sid will win an ACC championship before TOB.

  5. Wulfpack 03/13/2009 at 10:04 PM #

I seriously doubt that bsie. What are you basing that statement on?

  6. TheCOWDOG 03/13/2009 at 10:05 PM #

You go youngsters…nice to read your bridges.

    Great open Alpha.

  7. BSIE80 03/13/2009 at 10:15 PM #

Easier to win bb than football.
Also, Sid is a better bb recruiter than tob is a football recruiter.

  8. Wulfpack 03/13/2009 at 10:23 PM #

Well he might want to start next year otherwise he won’t be around for it to happen. If we suck again, nobody will show up to the RBC and his fate will be painfully obvious.

You can recruit all the A list guys you want. But if you can’t coach, it doesn’t really matter in the end.

  9. com state10 03/13/2009 at 11:29 PM #

BSIE80- You are wrong, but only by a few months.

TOB takes the ACC in the 2010 year, SID takes it in the spring of 2011.

I know all you oldies don’t wanna hear the optimism, but since this thread is about us younger guys, at least hear it out.

The only serious player I see us losing next year is Horner?! Look at the young guys we have now developing (Javi, cj, tracy, mays), plus Brown, Wood, and Howell being sophomores, and Leslie and Harrow being freshmen.

Even with out putting too much stock in the two solid recruiting classes, or our coaching staff (which I still support at least through the last game of next season), I simply like what we have.

I know most of people’s posts are about the coaching staff, and above. But you gotta admit, from a team perspective, we are in strong position.

I really want Sid to succeed. I have some hope that he will. But the shot clock’s running – he has to get-r-done pretty soon.

I’ll repeat myself from earlier posts: our players from this year have a very LOW basketball IQ – especially the older guys. We also depended on role players to be leaders and it didn’t work out well.

I’m going to try to explain this one more time. You cannot love NC State University, blindly as it may be, and want to throw Sidney Lowe out on his ear at the same time. The two are one in the same. Lowe’s hire is a product of NC State’s doing, just as a lenghty and necessitated learning curve for a D-1 HC is a product of NC State as well. As for Lowe taking even taking the job in the first place, we have go back up to the blindly loving NC State thing again.

That’s bullcrap. Maybe YOU can’t, but I certainly would take great joy in doing it.

Sidney Lowe is a terrible coach. He was a terrible coach in the NBA, he’s been a terrible coach in college. He’s not even a good recruiter. LARRY HARRIS is the good recruiter.

The fact that he ATTENDED this school 20 years ago is irrelevant.

MOC was a Clemson grad. And when he didn’t do the job in Clemson, he got thrown out. Amato was an NC State grad. Clyde Drexler was a houston grad. D’oh was a UNC grad. Jeff Jones was an UVa grad.

    So what?

Maybe you could begin using “alumni” instead of “alumnae”, as “alumnae” is the plural of “alumna” which means:

1 : a girl or woman who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university 2 : a girl or woman who is a former member, employee, contributor, or inmate

And “alumni”, the plural of alumnus means:

1 : a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university 2 : a person who is a former member, employee, contributor, or inmate

    Thanks.

JWrenn, thank you, seriously. My Latin is extremely rusty and now that you mention it, you’re dead on correct. As an EE, you can guess that my exposure the root of the Romantic languages is not what it used to be. Other than French, anyway, which I am 75% fluent in.

VaWolf – I don’t have to be surprised by how this season went to be pissed off about it.

I’m sure that you weren’t surprised, but I saw a comment here yesterday where someone claimed that better coaching would have gotten this team into the NCAAT. That was a LOL moment for me.

I guess that I just moved passed caring before Christmas. I thought that you did several entries around Christmas time that were dead on. I especially agreed with this one:

    http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2008/12/23/basketball-program-thoughts/

To be completely honest, I agreed you about this year’s team. I’m not convinced that next year’s team will be alot better.

    I don’t know if this is a good idea, but . . .

Could the admins begin a new thread as a letter to the University that stated an un-biased, rationale, presentation of the state of our athletic program. It would include all of the hard-data (president cup standings, sport team’s w/l, etc.) that would support the conclusion that the fan base wants to see a change at the AD position.

Then we could all simply sign it and promote others to come here and sign it. Not sure if every unique email address/login name is considered the same as a signature, but I would love to see how many names we could get. After 10,000, we might get serious press out of this. Just an idea!

Alpha: Trip, there are a lot of things that we will be posting over the next several weeks, your idea among them. Stay tuned and keep reading — and keep your ideas coming. We are all in this together!

There’s an NCAA Tournament? I thought the NIT was the tournament of champions? 🙁

On a serious note, I’m 22 years of age and have been a wolfpack fan since I was in 9th grade. So, about the time that Herbie started to go to the tournament a few times. The “Glory” I have known is making it to the sweet 16 and beating Uconn, how exciting!

I think in the end this basketball team just gives me another excuse to drink a lot. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.

I am freshman at nc state and was born a state fan but unfortunately i have had to get used to expecting losses and being surprised by a win i wonder what its like to expect wins and be surprised by loses sometimes i wonder if i will ever know what thats like!!!

  19. frankiepack 03/14/2009 at 1:12 PM #

Please with the pro Sid stuff ,this has nothing to do with what he did here as a player. We all wanted him to do well or we would not root so hard for us to do well.
This has to do with the simple fact that Sid is in over his head cannot coach and has not shown that this simple fact is going to change anytime soon.

  20. lsutton5144 03/14/2009 at 1:47 PM #

As much as I would like for Sid to succeed, it was painfully obvious after the Maryland game Thursday night that it’s not going to happen. All year long all we’ve heard is that we need a point guard. Well, the point guard showed up Thursday night, but no one else did. And the last two minutes, when the game was still in reach, was terrible. Passing the ball around, or turning it over, not taking shots, not fouling when the Terps had the ball . . . not a clue. You’ll see better in church league games.
We don’t deserve a NIT bid, and I hope we don’t get one. I’m tired of being embarrassed. I’ve been a Pack fan for 50 years and this is the lowest point I’ve seen for basketball.

“Alpha: Trip, there are a lot of things that we will be posting over the next several weeks, your idea among them. Stay tuned and keep reading — and keep your ideas coming. We are all in this together!”

If you are looking for ideas here is one. How about a questionnaire? Either via email, regular mail, or both. The Wolfpack Club has email addresses and residential addresses of active and former wolfpack members. I am sure there are other lists of NCSU alumni. It needs to be accompanied by a piece (with facts) that outlines all our teams’ performances compared to ACC competition. I know I have seen that data on this blog recently. It should focus on the Lee Fowler years.

The general idea isn’t we need to “pull the plug” on donations, but how much ADDITIONAL dollars a successful athletic department would generate for this school. To me, I think we would have more success with the BOT and the chancellor if they could see what a huge opportunity they are sitting on. We are in the top-3 of the ACC in giving WHILE WE SUCK AT EVERYTHING. What would happen if we performed at a top-3 level? I donate to the WC every year. I agree that if we all stopped or reduced our donations it would MOST LIKELY get the attention of the right people but it would FOR SURE further hurt our athletic programs. Do we want to contribute to the problem?

In random order, here are some questions I would include (others, feel free to add):

    1. Is there a relationship between the success of NCSU’s athletics and the amount of money you donate to the university?
    2. Are you concerned about the performance of NCSU’s athletic programs over the past 2 decades?
    3. Based on NCSU’s athletic performance over the past 2 decades do you believe NCSU belongs in the Atlantic Coast Conference?
    4. Do you believe there is a positive relationship between success in college athletics and quality of college applicants?
    5. Do you think it is time for a change in the athletic administration?
    6. Do you know people that would become more financially involved with the University if the athletic programs improved?
    7. How would you classify NCSU’s performance over the last 2 decades (successful, above average, average, below average, failure)?
    8. If this level of performance continues would you consider reducing or terminating your contributions to the university?
    9. Would a change in the athletic administration make you consider reducing or terminating your contributions to the university?

If we could get 50% of the WC list to respond (that would be around 10,000 people) and another 10k to 20k non-WC alumni to respond, I think it would demonstrate (assuming we see the results we all would expect to see) what a HUGE cash cow the athletic department could be for the university.

    Just a thought.
