Pack Grinds Out Fifth ACC Win, Terps Claw Back to Bubble

For all the crap he has (rightly) taken, Courtney Fells really sacked up for the Pack today. He played excellent defense on Landesberg, and was the only State player not to panic in the last minute of the game. After Horner repeated his horrific clutch free throw shooting against teams from the Old Dominion, UVA had the ball down 3 with 16 seconds to go. Then, Fells made the play of the game – he fouled. The Cavs had nailed three after three late, and entropy was most definitely not the Pack’s friend. Fells wisely forced Landesberg to make both ends of a one-and-one (which he did), then demanded the ball and nailed 2 FTs to re-set things with 7 ticks to go. So, he fouls again. This time, the Cavs missed with the pressure on, with Fells skying to secure the rebound and the win.

I don’t mean to soft sell the Wolfpack’s problems today, of which there were many. NC State’s best offensive player failed to score in 22 minutes of play. Our starting point guard posted a horrific 0:7 assist-to-turnover ratio (and was still in the game down the stretch, which says all you need to know about our guard situation). But the Pack still found a way to win. And that’s how you maximize your potential as a team – find a way to get it done when you aren’t playing well, or as today, when you are playing like complete shit for long stretches at a time. Yes, today’s effort probably doesn’t beat anyone in the league but Virginia, but it still counts as a W. Thank God, the disaster is averted. Thank Tracy, CJ, and Dennis for the first 39 minutes, and Courtney for the rest.

Around the ACC, Miami beat Boston College convincingly. That’s one down, three wins to go if Jack McClinton is to put his dancing shoes on. The schedule is somewhat favorable, so don’t write the Canes off. In a real shock, Maryland rallied from 16 points down to stun the Holes in overtime. Gary Williams officially qualifies for undead status at this point. He’s harder to kill off than cockroaches or black mold (and about as welcome in your family’s living room).

What does it all mean? I have no idea. The ACC tourney should be loads of fun, though. Want to make yourself completely insane? Try to name your first team all-ACC. It’s hard enough to narrow it down to 7 or 8, let alone 5.

I can’t see how Costner would have any type of injury that would effect his play.
He took the ball to the hoop and missed a dunk.
I don’t think he would have went for an agressive dunk if he had a hand/thumb/elbow/shoulder injury.

He was just being his inconsistent self he has been this year. He was matched up against a smaller player and should have posted up versus trying to take the guy off the dribble. Every time he put it on the floor it was taken away from him.

The big lineup has not benefited him with certain matchups. Actually, Horner has benefited from it more against certain teams.

It’s great to see CJ have the kind of game he had today. This only builds his confidence. Sid did a good job getting these guys playing time throughout the season.

I also agree that Mays should get some time and let Degand sit a little bit.

Don’t look gift horses in the mouth, and don’t question victories fairly won.

Yes, it may have been ugly, but this is not a high talent team playing a high talent opponent.

Virginia wanted an ugly game and State certainly obliged. Where State was stingy was in making sure it won and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.

Now then, who is looking forward to the newspaper tomorrow. Sad, sad excuses as to why UNC lost to lowly Maryland. State holds on…again…but will get very little credit. Mark it down, and believe me in the morning.

What a great day. First the Wolfpack wins, and then Chapel Who loses. At least when we blew to big leads we still held on to win. Chapel Who watched a big lead dwindle only to lose in Overtime. While I rank Terp fans right up there with Carolina fans as the worst it was a pleasure watching them go down. As far as the pack I wish Sid would take Degand and just sit him. Bring back Mays let that guy play. Also what is going on with Ferg and Thomas they are getting no time at all. Thomas brings a lot of energy to the team and is a better alternative than Harris. Maybe it is just me in this thinking and the Wolfpack is playing better so might as well trust the coach and just continue to watch this team improve. I have believed in Sid since day one and with each game that passes they are getting better. While it was not a pretty win at least it was a win.

A win is a win is a win. I’ll take it, especially with the make-up of this team. With our guard play, we have no business beating too many teams. With all the shit Sidney has taken, he’s found a way to put is in a decent position right now in the season. In a guard owned league where we have ZERO guards, we’ve really been able to do some good things. Imagine what Sid could do with a stud PG. I wish like hell we could get one. Hell, it’s only been what, 18 years now?

  7. graywolf 02/21/2009 at 9:30 PM #

A win is a win no matter how ugly. I’ll take it above losing any day. I was surprised at the coaching in the last 2 min and I am keeping my fingers crossed that Lowe is learning on the job. I hope this trend continues and we really hit the recruiting trail hard and land more talent in the upcoming years.

Good win, even if ugly. Good win by the Terps too.

If we can win 2 of the final 4 games of the year I would say Sid is steamrolling compared to last year and it can be a huge building block to next year. Like football, off season can be more important to young players than the regular season. If we can get some momentum, solidify our roster, and get these young players even more confident, then we are moving forward as a program. Unlike last year, i really see some freshman & sophomores who i am totally comfortable with starting. Cj and Smith are proving that they have improved the most of anyone on the team and that’s big considering they return to be our nucleus. Horner is becoming more and more confident in his shot and esp big in helping break the press. Really all we can ask of sid this year is player control and player improvement. He has been successful in both aspects. You hear no player complaining and bickering and every single player on that team has improved or play better since the end of last year. I know its Virgina but we needed this win to insure a middle of the pack finish and a springboard start into next year. Its not always pretty, but its W’s are coming in and its obvious the program is advancing. sleep well pack fans, today was a good day…….

I’m drinking the Sid kool-aid. Can we blame him for the stupid, lazy TO’s? Maybe, but you can’t coach away stupidity. You just work on it.

Sid had Fells all over Sylvan L. And when Fells was sitting, brilliant to bring Simon in. Obviously the gameplan was don’t lat SL beat us. Beautiful and it worked. You can’t expect Diane to come in and play like he did. Again, the last few minutes comes down to TO’s.

And of course it was Sid’s call to foul in the last few minutes. We had two fouls to give in the last 2 and he used those fouls beautifully to take off the most time from the clock. And then, the fouls when they were down by 3 were absolutely the right call. Giminski commented on that.

Yeah, Horner choked down the stretch, but he’s been $ for us, and CJ is gonna be a playa! He is now.

Last thing about Sid, he’s finally found a rotation, and he’s sticking to it. Remember how much we were questioning his 12 man rotation earlier. That doesn’t work. He was just trying to find the one that worked.

This was a good-ugly win, boys.

I understand the concern with blowing leads, and I am concerned as well. But consider this- we have had 18 point leads in 5 of the last 6 games. That is impressive in its own right. Maybe the reason we struggle with leads is just learning how to win and changing an attitude and culture. Think about the past 20 years. We have a history of grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory. We have a history of losing games we need to win in lesser games following big games. One of the many things Sid is fighting to do is creating a culture of winning and toughness. Maybe he is slowly getting there. Though we’ve blown those leads, we’ve only lost one of the 5 games.

3 out of last 4 ain’t bad. looking at the next four games, it’s a nice trek through upper-middle and lower-middle acc tier standings. I don’t want to make any comments on the Wake game, because of this: the game we played today sounded like exactly what happened at V. Tech, the difference in outcome I think being that we were at home. Maryland and BC games at home will be *huge* on several different levels. We are definitely the Cardiac Pack, but not in any good way.

  13. turfpack 02/21/2009 at 11:16 PM #

Good win guys -you worked it out.
Sid -good job with defensive plan against the HOOS.
Fells worked his ass off on Lands
CJ and Smith really showing their stuff.
Not a easy win-BUT WHEN HAS IT EVER BEEN IN THE 2ND HALF OF ACC?

  14. redfred2 02/21/2009 at 11:35 PM #

There are some good and positive comments here, and I hate to be a wet blanket and break up the flow, but I do not understand how holding a freshman to a single basket under his season average, as in TWO POINTS under what he NORMALLY scores against anyone he faces, is worthy of so much praise?

I guess winning the game is really what matters, but I just don’t think that it makes our individual defensive play today praiseworthy. I will say this, I don’t think anyone would be praising defensive effort on the day if we had not held on to win. I just don’t see where it was all that great, especially when it basically and effectively eliminated one fifth of our own offense, and made it that much harder on the other four players who had to figure how score enough points between them to win the game.

Remember, if those other four players hadn’t been able to do it without him, and if there wasn’t a lead already, those last four foul shots that seem so great and wonderful because of the win, would probably never have happened anyway.

    re: wet blanket

Landesburg is just the type of guy that has come into State’s house and lit up the joint with an over-the-top game — averages 18 against everyone else, scores 30 on State. (Hello Stephen Curry.) He shot 4-14 while he was on the court for 39 minutes, 5 minutes more than his average. So per minute he was about 20% under average. His FG average is 46%, today it was 28%. So while he was “only” 2 points under his average, he wasn’t really in a flow.

State had a 17 point lead with just over 10 minutes to play, and that’s with Costner (15 ppg) scoring zero, so the other 6 guys that scored were doing very well without Fells’ or Brandon’s offense. CJ filled the gap nicely, going almost 13 points over his average. Fells averages 12 and scored 9, (with the 4 coming at the very end). I think the fact that others can step up is a really encouraging sign for the team, .

And regardless of how State got the situation at the end, Fells FTs were important. And he made them all.

“I SWEAR that the CLOCK kept running while we had the ball OUT OF BOUNDS…we probably picked up several seconds on each in bounds…”

^The clock only stops after made baskets in the last minute of regulation, and I did not notice any irregularities …

“My scariest moment was the Ben turnover off an inbound play where he just threw it to the UVA guy and he made the layup to cut the lead to 3. One possession is about 3 possessions to close for me with this team”

^I’m not sure what they showed on tv when this play occured, but I was sitting on that end of the court and Baker took Javi and threw him out of the way when Ben inbounded the ball … More or less everyone on that end of the court was screaming in disbelief that no foul was called.

Also, re: Landesberg – he’s really the only guy that could beat us. Yeah, he got close to his scoring average but he had to work his ass off to get there – and he for sure didn’t light us up. Fells and the help D did a terrific job today. How many times have we lost to the other team’s best player? Not just this season, but in many seasons past? It didn’t happen today.

Also, say what you want to about Horner and Costner, but they were the primary help defenders to help stop dribble penetration today. Outstanding job.

  17. Daily Update 02/22/2009 at 5:31 AM #

Since starting 1-4, we have gone 4-3 in the league games. In those 3 loses was the game against VT that we clearly should have one(and would have us in a tie for 7th right now) and two losses to UNC. So we are that close to being 5-0 against ACC teams not named UNC. We would only be 1 win out of 6th place and tied with BC in the loss column. We are that close to being right in the thick of things.

Instead, we are going to have to play are way back in. At Wake on Thursday would be a win that puts us on the NCAA bubble. Big, big, big game and it is also a crucial game for Wake Forest.

  18. Texpack 02/22/2009 at 7:44 AM #

Winning an ACC game where Brandon Costner failed to score would have been unthinkable three weeks ago. I also saw a thread on Pack Pride that said his grandfather died Thursday of Friday, so he may well have been impacted by that yesterday.

CJ Williams has really come on and Dennis Horner is shooting threes like I thought he would when he was a freshman. Scoring from those two players has been key over this stretch.

Javi took a small step back today, but at least three of the TOs that were probably charged to him were the result of his teammates not breaking to the open spot where they would have had easy baskets.

  19. Rochester 02/22/2009 at 7:54 AM #

Javi’s 0/7 asst/TO ratio is slightly deceiving. It wasn’t one of his better games, but he was more in control than a 0/7 ratio would suggest. He called his own number a couple of times when he saw he could drive for a layup. He’s getting better at recognizing when that’s there and when it’s not. The team did look generally better with him out there than Degand. Javi’s a much better dribbler, which is worth something.

One place we miss Costner when he’s not in the game is on in-bounds plays. He is often our primary in-bounder (is that a word?). It can get adventurous when someone else takes on that task.

I have a Tar Heel friend who is now crying about how his team isn’t as good as the ’05 squad. Boo-f’n-hoo. That’s the mentality that obligates me to hate everything pansy blue. And those ass-clowns wearing the t-shirts that said “NC State is NOT our rival” on Wednesday. Yeah, do you have one of those shirts for every team in the ACC or just us? Because if it’s just us, well, I think you made it clear we’re your rival, retard.

  20. Rochester 02/22/2009 at 7:56 AM #

Javi took a small step back today, but at least three of the TOs that were probably charged to him were the result of his teammates not breaking to the open spot where they would have had easy baskets.

Precisely. This is a casualty of rotating through three different PGs in one season. If these guys were more accustomed to playing with Javi they might be thinking along with him better.

  21. Sw0rdf1sh 02/22/2009 at 8:18 AM #

^^^Exactly. There were 2 passes that I know of where Javi was passing a nice pick and roll with McCauley towards the basket and Ben swung out more instead of driving to the basket. I know the guy likes to shoot away from the basket more than Smith, but I just wish he would attack and slam it every once in a while.

One time it was near the end of the game, and yes, we were trying to eat clock, but there was one hell of an easy basket and Ben wasn’t ready for the pass (where it was intended). He swung his hand in a circle to indicate they were moving it around and eating clock, but I think Javi made a good decision on that one.

Javi is looking speedy and finally hitting those layups (reverse too) that were rimming out early in the year.

For what it is worth, I wouldn’t be too worried about those NOT our rival shirts…in about another year they are going to have to wear it for the football games as we will be playing back to back ACC Championship games against a team that is not from NC.

  22. TOBtime 02/22/2009 at 8:20 AM #

The mighty holes are faltering down the stretch. Without a miracle buzzerbeater they also have a loss at FSU. It’s a good day when NCSU wins and the holes lose no matter the circumstances

  23. wufpup76 02/22/2009 at 10:41 AM #

“I like where we are as a team,” State coach Sidney Lowe said. “I like our mind-set, the way we’re playing, wins and losses. Obviously we’re trying to creep up that ladder. The thing we’ve talked about is, we’re going to control our own destiny and everybody else, we’ll see what happens. But we’re taking it one game at a time.”

Controlling your own destiny; taking one game at a time; seeing games as opportunities … Perfect mindset

    www newsobserver com/sports/decock/story/1414470 html

  24. redfred2 02/22/2009 at 11:49 AM #

^Now that is more like what I thought we would be hearing coming from Sidney Lowe.

Mr Plywood, I could go on and debate your stats with counterpoints that offset everyone of them, but I guess the facts are that despite what I see in Courtney Fells, the athletic abilities that could make him a viable FORCE everytime out and on BOTH ends of the court in the ACC, but instead, he has settled into the role as the designated defensive specialist for this program as a Senior.

Also, I guess more in line with your way of thinking, as well as to Sidney Lowe’s credit, the coach has worked and tinkered with certain line ups and given different personnel leeway in order to find a way to overcome the very inconsistent offensive output that Fells has always offered the team. So I guess maybe instead of having to depend a steady flow of offensive output from game to game, and instead of having his teammates looking for him when he isn’t really interested in having the ball in his hands the first place, Lowe gave him another job to do.

If that’s considered Courtney Fells’ full potential and he’s happy that that’s his designated defender role from here on out, as a Senior on the team, then fine, I can forget the rest and live with it too.
