Game Film Breakdown of Each of the 21 Turnovers Against GT

Credit and props to SFN reader TXPack for this breakdown of yesterday’s game at Georgia Tech.  — Alpha

Turnovers remain a big concern for the Wolfpack, especially headed into the critical final stretch of the season. Here is a breakdown of the 21 turnovers from yesterday in Atlanta:

First 5 minutes of the 1st (6 TOs)
1* – Smith passed to the back of Fells after a defensive rebound

2 – McCauley lost the ball at top of the key

3* – Costner inbound and incepted by GT (GT 3 pts)

4 – Fells lost his dribble at top of the key

5 – Gonzalez bad pass to the middle (GT 2pts of free throw)

6* – Smith bad inbound to Fells’ foot (GT 2pts)

Last 3 minutes of 1st (3 TOs)
7 – Gonzalez bad pass intercepted (GT 3pt3)

8 – Costner bad pass to Gonzalez out of bound(GT 2pts)

9 – Degand bad pass to Fells, intercepted by GT (GT 2pts)

1st 5 minutes of 2nd (5 TOs)
10* – Costner inbound went out bound (GT 2pts)

11 *– Smith lost Costner perfect pass under basket

12* – Smith lost defensive rebound to GT

13* – Degand bad pass out of baseline

14* – Degand bad pass (GT 2pts)

15* – McCauley lost ball when went to basket

16 – Degand lost the ball when drove to basket (GT 3pts)

17 – Williams bad pass

18* – Williams lost the ball to double team and called for intentional foul

19* – McCauley lost the ball

20 – Smith lost Degand’s pass

21* – McCauley lost the ball after received an inbound (off own foot)

1, 3, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 21 (total 12) were careless inbound and passes. Our point guards (Degand and Gonzalez) were contributed to 7 TOs. Smith, however, were related to 5 TOs, which is the area he needs to work on. McCauley had 4 TOs by himself and missed few free throws.

For us to have a chance against UNC, our point gurads need to step up and continue making plays. We have to move pass the half court within 5-6 seconds when pressed, so we can have time to setup half court offense. Our bigs need to cut down the TOs and make good passes out of double teams.

^ All the team can do is to do their best to win each game and pretend each one is their tournament to get into the tournament.

In effect for a fringe bubble team, that’s what their deal is. No one expects a win against UNC, but afterward, those games count for more than one win.

Anytime you have 20 turnovers–or are near that number–it is an automatic loss. We have have ‘lived’ at or above 20 all year… and to beat GT by more than 20–with 20 turnovers–is a once-a-decade anomoly. It should also be a ‘wake-up call’ to our team to how good we CAN be. What would the score have been with 6-8 turnovers ?!

3-3 from this point forward is the “most likely scenario” but 2-4 is more likely than 4-2. By the time we play UMd they will have played @ Clemson and played both Duke and UNC-CH at home. Three blow out losses could bring a dead dog of a team to the RBC. If they somehow win two of those games, they would arrive with a boat load of confidence and a lot to play for. BC has to concern you no matter what. The game @ Miami will be huge for them unless they just collapse between now and then.

Didn’t we have 20+ turnovers when we played GT at home? GT is a scrappy team, and even though we are generally loose with the ball, a team that slaps and jabs the whole game is going to rattle the other team into stupid turnovers.

^^ I can imagine GT is an awful team to play against. Every second someone is slapping or reaching in. I give credit to Hewitt for getting his team to play as hard as he does. Those guys play with the same intensity as UNC but they just aren’t great players.

I know I’m gonna get roasted for this one, but how’s this for a strategy: just don’t foul. Period. Miami didn’t do it, or at least wasn’t called for it, and UNC scores in the 70s instead of 90s. Hansbrough and Lawson usually score anyway when they’re fouled, and rack up another 5-15 (apiece?) from the line with the FTs.

This would be tough to do, especially with TH spazzing out in the paint, and the refs being overcome by his will and all. This might also appear to be soft defense, which would of course mean people would call out our defense after the fact if we lost. But take away 10-15 easy points for UNX, and of course hold onto the damn ball on our possessions, and who knows where we would be in the last 5 min or so? Then come the typical benefits, like no foul DQs, and 1-and-1s for them down the stretch if the game is actually close.

I love to see TH get hacked as much as the next guy, but I feel like it plays into his hands. Same with Lawson, and even though they’re stacked at every position, those are the 2 best guys on their team right now.

“The ACC also worked with us to select a game on the Thursday of Fall Break, thus there are no classes that day or the following day.”]

Damned malingering UNC tailgaters, getting in the students’ way the next morning.

No wonder crappy b-ball coaches stick around so long…we go from our lowest point in the season to our highest in a matter of 2 games. The past two games will save Lowe’s job and the fans now have this thing called hope. Fact is Lowe has lost us way too many games the past 3 seasons. A good coach takes this team to the NCAA tournament hands down. Need I remind anyone of Marquette, Davidson, FL…all of which were VERY winnable in which a STRONG case could be made for poor coaching losing those games. I won’t get into the ACC games.

Forgive me if I sound cynical but I just hate the rollercoaster ride of NC State b-ball.

    packalum44,

Don’t you think there is enough time as a State fan to be critical? Why in the world would you do so after two wins, a little hope and the UNC game upcoming.

  12. packalum44 02/16/2009 at 5:24 PM #

^ No. I want to be the best and I don’t think Coach Lowe can get us there. I don’t care about winning two consecutive ACC games. My goals for this school and for this season were bigger than that. If we win out or come close to it, we will have come close to reaching expectations (which were low to begin with). I have a better chance of winning the powerball.

^The return of Degand to a physical state that is close to where he was before his injury last year has as much to do with our recent improvement AND our prior struggles against UF, Davidson and Marquette as anything else. I will remind those who say that Sidney can’t coach of what his first team did with it’s only intelligent guard playing on 1.5 legs. We have talent problems more than anything else. The recruiting has to close the talent gap some before we can be in the top third of the conference, which is where we were for many decades and where I would like for us to be again. This year, had Degand been healthy from the very start of the season, we could have possibly made the NCAA Tournament. Going 8-8 or 7-9 in the conference isn’t my idea of a good year either, but with out existing talent it’s not underachieving either.

  15. packalum44 02/16/2009 at 6:50 PM #

^ Talent gap with whom may I ask??? Are we waiting for Lowe to assemble the talent of Duke and UNC before we judge him? I’ve heard that before. Most ACC schools would KILL to get McCauley and Costner. I remind folks their class is top-20.

Talent aside, at best, we have a below average coach. At worst, we have a horrible one. Regardless, he’s not good enough to get us where I want us to be. I repeat, poor coaching and lack of player development has cost us way too many games for me to be happy. We lose two 4-star seniors and a junior McDonald’s All-American for two 4-star freshmen and a 3-star sharp shooter? Explain to me how our talent will be better? Oh yeah, let’s just assume since these are Lowe’s players, they will be so much better than Herb’s. He seems to be really good at spotting talent!

I apologize if the tone of this post is sarcastic, that is not my intention. I just think we need a better coach who can win with what he has. We have bigger fish to fry though. Fowler is the last person I want in charge of searching for a head coach. I hope everyone can agree on that!

Frankly I have been thinking this team is not that far away. Think about it. We’ve had several games against quality opponents lost on the last shot (Davidson, Florida, Marquette come to mind). We’ve had some games where we had some big leads and were just not able to hang on (Duke, VATech for example). And some others where we had furious comebacks but couldn’t get ‘over the top’ (unx?). The Clemson game was the one loose we had that I would call bad.
If we could eliminate the turnovers and attack the press better with some transition I think this team could actually be pretty good. Degand is getting his legs under him and that seems to make Gonzalez play better. Smith and Williams are progressing nicely. And we have some real good recruits coming in.
Hopefully we end the season on an up note and Costner decides he’ll stick around.

packalum – the interior may not be better, but the guards could be. I’m not sold yet either – but I’ve seen alot of encouraging signs this year. If it seems like we’re perpetually just a year from turning the corner during his 5th year, we’ll have all the evidence we’ll need.

  18. Texpack 02/17/2009 at 7:06 AM #

I don’t think we need Duke or UNC-CH talent. I’d like to have at least one or two guys somewhere in the top 15 in the all-ACC voting. Would Coutney Fells be a critical part of the team at Clemson or Wake? Would Dennis Horner be the first big man off of the bench for either of those schools? Would Javi play for either of them? That is what I mean by talent gap. I don’t expect it to get better next year unless the recruiting class plays better than freshmen usually do in this league and Costner stays.
