ACC officials embarrass league, spark (Jamie) ‘Luckie’ comeback

Jamie Luckie

If the ACC really wants to claim the “Best college basketball in the country” title, they have to fix their officiating. I won’t even go into some of the calls during the game (it’s a bad sign when both coaches are pissed off at the referees). The calls were bad enough, but they had to go to the monitor five times??? FIVE TIMES??? WTF! The referees in the ACC have the remote timing equipment, so I’m pretty sure the clock issues are their fault… This has to be fixed, because it’s a huge black eye to our conference that the officiating is always suspect.

— Comment from an ACC Basketball fan watching the NC State @ Virginia Tech game on Sunday

It took everything that Virginia Tech had…and even MORE than they had for them to find a way to halt NC State’s six game winning streak over the Hokies and hand NC State’s Sidney Lowe his first coaching loss in six overtime games.

When an officiating crew is so incompetent that the game has to be stopped a half dozen times to watch replays you know that you have been given the junior varsity officiating team.

NC State controlled the entire game, never trailing until overtime after taking the lead to break and 8-8 tie. But, that kind of control isn’t enough when horrible officiating can cause a mentally fragile team to crumble.

NC State led by 18 points in the second half. But even that wasn’t enough when bad officiating can create points out of thin air. Literally.

Take for example the EIGHT POINTS that Virginia Tech scored in just 35 seconds that were owed exclusively to amazing incompetent officiating.

From 12:40 to 12:05 – in just 35 seconds – Virginia Tech scored EIGHT POINTS that were ALL the direct result of HORRIBLE officiating that was so bad that even the television announcers were discussing it. (We hope to have video for you later).

First, Courtney Fells was incorrectly called for an intentional foul on a fantastic defensive play (that in the cases of different uniforms may not have been called for a foul at all).

At the time of the foul the television announcers said the following:

Capel: “Give Courtney Fells credit. He blocked the shot. Hank just happened to fall awkwardly and his face hit the baskstop under the basket. That has nothing to do with that Courtney Fells did. That’s just the laws of gravity. You’re up, you must come back down and he just ran into the backstop.

Brant: “There is no question about the face – Fells was going after the ball.”

Capel: “He blocked the shot”

Brant: “There is no question about the foul. But it is not intentional.”

On the following inbounds play that gave Tech the ball because of the intentional foul, the receiver of the inbounds pass took — get ready for this — at least SIX STEPS without dribbing the ball and without being called for a traveling violation. I am not using hyperbole. I am not kidding. If you count the shuffling of feet as twp steps instead of one then you get to seven or eight steps.

Again, this is not a joke. How in the hell can a college official MISS SIX-SEVEN-EIGHT steps with NO dribble?! (Again, we hope to have video later).

Of course, the lack of the travling call benefited the Hokies who proceeded to hit a three point basket just seconds later.

THEN…on NC State’s next possession, the Virginia Tech defender reached through the body of Dennis to Horner to get a ‘steal’ that was followed by an immediate three point basket. This play was critiqued twice by the announcers both live and during an instant replay as an obvious foul. One quote was as follows:

“He better be careful because that right there was more than a foul than anything else he has done today.”

A few other quick questions for you:
How does Seth Greenberg get T’d up…then call the ref a ‘fucking asshole’ twice (that we can see)…then call the ref that about three or four more times in the 2nd half…get thrown out of the game?

Why do they bother painting a coaching box on Seth Greenberg’s sideline?

How fitting that Jeff Allen hit the crucial shot when everyone watching the game thought he should have fouled out 15 minutes earlier?

How ironic that former Wolfpack recruit Dorenzo Hudson was granted key charging calls by throwing himself to the floor in wild jirations?

A case can be made that it is unfair to blame these kids and this team for “choking” when their play did not merit being in that position and when a competently officiated game would not have put them in that position. Their good play created the 18 point lead; why is it their fault/responsibility to have to deal with an abnormal number of points for their opponent over which their play had no input?

But, make no mistake about it — NC State had bountiful opportunities to still win this game and failed to capitalize (including Dennis Horner and Javi Gonzalez’s four missed free throws in the final seconds of the game). And, there were definitely a lot of things that could have been done differently from the Wolfpack sideline. The following are a smattering of comments from across the internet that have some value to share here.

Seth knew what he was doing, and it worked to his benefit the entire second half.

Fells goes into a shell after the bullshit intentional call. Naturally, Sid can’t get him out of it.

None of this excuses the fact that Lowe mismanaged the hell out of the end of the game, sticking with Javi after he was obviously tired (and thus extremely loose with the ball) and deciding not to play Tracy Smith after an unstoppable first half offensively.

The season is now over. I’m sure the offseason will be even worse, so get ready

Another one…

This is by far the WORST coaching i have ever seen by a NC State in 25 years……

1. Where was Johnny Thomas after his best game last week????? We would have loved to have his hustle, athleticisim, and rebounding.

2. WHY IN THE WORLD does Sid ALWAYS call a time out at then end of the game on the opposite side of the floor so we have to inbounds the ball into full court pressure.

3. After a great begining for Tracey Smith why was re relegated to the bench the last 10 min of the game ESPECIALLY after Costner fouled out.

4. There is no way a player can feel comfortable when he is snatched out of a game all the time ex. javier player about the entire game and mays played few mins. why???

5. Seth Greenburg shows he wants to win, shows his team how important posessions are, and clearly draws up plays to utilize his teams strenghts. Sid should have taken a feather out of seths hat and blown up when fells was called for a intentional foul (7 point swing because of that call alone)

Why is it that every time officiating in a game involving NC State is questionable it involves Luckie? The ACC should completely exclude this putz from EVER calling a game that involves the ‘Pack. Every time Luckie calls our games, Costner fouls out. Every time Luckie calls our games, there are some obvious phantom foul calls. WTF???

Wasn’t there a group of FB officials barred from calling our games because of obvious poor performance? Luckie should be reprimanded in the least, and probably suspended.

This is not where I expected us to be 3 years ago. If someone said to me this is where our program would be in 3 years if we hire Lowe who would accept that? I still don’t think we have bottomed out. As long as Lowe is at the helm, we will keep sinking. I don’t think we truly grasp how bad a hire this was…I don’t think we accept it.

Talk about cognitive dissonace…the fans have it wayyyyy more than the players. Here’s how it works….

fan watches a game. fan is hopeful we will play well. team plays horribly, we suck. fan’s hope is so strong that fan will not let himself believe we suck as bad as we actually do. objective spectator knows how bad we suck. ncsu fan’s hopeful/optimistic emotions contrast so sharply against reality…sucky team/coach….fan must get his disconnected emotions in line with reality but how???? oh, well fan realizes that Lowe is new to college. ok. give him time. fan thinks we need more talent to compete. yea. fan says that college bb is a gaurd’s game, we don’t have any. fan already feels better. fan’s hopeful emotions now make sense to him. fan is happy again. fan writes check to WPC.

    1. Bad officiating- too much of it- these guys should be the ones fired….
    2. Horner choked
    3. Costner/Fells did not get it done in the 2nd half
    4. Javi played good enough
    5. Mays played terrible- Degand must be hurting not to see any playing time
    6. Tracy can’t handle the double team- they didn’t double him until the 2nd half, where he became ineffective and sat on the pine
    7. We haven’t learned to put teams away- we lack confidence- this goes against the team leaders- Fells/Ben/Costner- not Sid
    8. Ben played great- he got mugged the last play of regulation- refs sucked
    9. Greensburg- would not want this tyrant coaching my son or our team- very much a disrespectful person- he should have been thrown out of the game- remember he is teaching these 18-22 year olds how to act as men- the show he puts on and the language is not acceptable in the typical workforce and the refs should have ejected him- can’t believe he got away with this. I wouldn’t have my son play for such a d..k
    10. Refs call on Fells as flagrant was totally wrong. This should be a reviewable call- somehow this needs to be addressed by ACC officials. One of the other officials should have over ruled this call- Easy to see the block.

Please refrain from calling for Sid’s head- sort of childish. Really flaky to say fire Sid. The guy has a 5 year contract. No good would come from changing coaches now or at the end of this season. Very immature to say this.
Is he the best coach? No. But, you are talking about canning a true NCSU fan/champion that cares more about this university and program than anyone of us on this blog. Is he the long term answer? Maybe not, but he gets his chance to finish out our committment. Anything less is not an option.

I believe VT was favored, they are the better team at this point, they were playing at home. This was a winnable game for us, but it didn’t happen. So, we are 2-6. Live with it, don’t watch it, walk your dog, wait for FB, whatever you want to do.

Ohh I definitely want to quit watching / supporting, but can’t really bring myself to do so because I love the Wolfpack so … I want to be loyal and to be there for the good times (hahahaahahaha!!!) if there ever will be any

So, I’m not quitting, but that said I am giving more than strong consideration to NOT buying any Wolfpack tickets or making any type of Wolfpack donations for this year and next

But I know I probably will because I’m a huge idiotic sucker when it comes to the Wolfpack … I want to believe … I don’t want to give up … blah, blah … wahh wahh

    Thus the cycle will continue

The refs suck-last play BM got kill twice(replayed on DVR).
The tech on Seth changed the play of the game in the 2nd half
The call on Fells was BS a turning point in the game for VT
    Missed free throws didn’t help.
As a coach I could tell things were disscussed a half time by the refs- contact was not going to be call very much in the 2nd half.
As far as I’m concerned this game was stolen -so………
We will have to steal one down the road.

BSIE80 I dont want to wait around for his contract to be up or walk my dog every time we play. You blame everyone but Sid if you want. I want wins and Im not willing to just suck for a few more years. This is NCSU not UNCW

“But, you are talking about canning a true NCSU fan/champion that cares more about this university and program than anyone of us on this blog.”

After today, I’d be delighted. I’ll even bring the papers and his big fat buyout check over to him. Where do I go? Just tell me where he is to sign and it’ll be a done deal by 8PM tonight. Hell, I’ll even arrange to call the AD over at St. Paul’s College and see if they are looking for a basketball coach. I would expect rejection, but will tell him he was a national champion while playing at NC State, and then it should be a done deal if St. Pauls’ standards are anything like NC State’s.

Today was an abject failure, a total mismanagement of the game and his roster.

^About the whole Jamie Lucky allowed to ref our games stuff …

Not sure if this will be the case for Luckie or not, but Larry Rose didn’t work any of our games for over 2 seasons (IIRC) after that technical call against us in the ACC semis in 04 against Maryland (not to mention several other “blown” calls that went against us from him in games /seasons prior to that)

Now that guy really did have it in for us … no debate … One of our fans or someone associated with us must have really pissed in his corn flakes sometime … I would guess that some of the things that get yelled at our home games (personal stuff about players and refs) probably had something to do with it, cause I knew we would have a tough time winning whenever Rose was working the game

“BURY “Sid.” I mean, bury him. Immediately give releases to the kids he recruited. Apologize to the fans for hiring him in the first place. Fire all of the coaches. Fire everyone associated with him. Burn some sage when he’s gone.”

Yeah, that’s going to really earn goodwill from other coaches and entice someone worth a damn to come here. If we got the cold shoulder from the coaching fraternity for “running Sendek out of town”, how the hell do you think they’re going to respond to the completely classless suggestion you made?

BSIE – you will get your wish next year, and see the magic he works without Ben, BC, and Fells (aka 90 percent of our offense and rebounding). I’m sure he’ll do great.

But don’t worry, he won’t get fired. We employed the worst coach in ACC history (Les) for 6 years and didn’t fire him. Hell, we promoted him insead!

I am 44 years old. I am so glad that I am old enough to have watched a really good NC State basketball team play in the 70’s and the 80’s because I may never see a another good NC State basketball team in my lifetime. I really feel sorry for kids and 20 year olds today, because they don’t even remember State being good. Oh, but I guess it could be worse, we could be UVA, another storied ACC basketball program gone to pot. Yes, this has to be the worst officiated game I have watched in a long time, but remember this is the ACC, the conference that prides itself on having the worst officials in basketball and football, so what do you expect. For one, I don’t expect to blow a 16 pt lead to VT, last I remember the only reason they are in the league is because we needed another football powerhouse. NC State should not lose to FSU, Miami, BC or VT, period….. I wasted another day in the house watching this bunch of misfits try to play basketball, well, I guess if the college game was 35 minutes long instead of 40, we might be the best team around. I am so ready for this season to be over and get football here, how we lucked up and got a pretty good coach for football, I will never know, with LEE Fowler running this athletic department. Lets just hope old lee don’t screw that up and let TOB get away. If I set down to watch this team play one more time this year, I hope someone beats me senseless.

    BTW
I keep seeing people say we missed 4 FTs that could have won it. Gonzo’s FTs were in OT so only Horner missed FTs that could have won it.

The officiating was terrible, but the refs didn’t miss Horner’s two free throws at the end that would’ve sealed it,nor did they continue to call the same set that continued to fail every time down the stretch. Blaming this loss solely — or even primarily — on the officiating is a disservice to Sidney Lowe and his players who have earned their sucktitude honestly.

Terrible terrible outcome. Officials were the worst I’ve seen in some time for both sides. Sid totally mismanaged the end of the game. It was stupid to try and sit on that lead. Then he called the timeout on the wrong end of the floor AGAIN! We were owning them offensively in the first half…we should’ve kept that up by attacking inside. Was Smith injured? Why did he not play in the last ten minutes? That is mind boggling to me. Fells has come back to life but we went into a ball holding offense which shut all our scorers down. Horner choked….although it was a high pressure situation that he probably hasn’t been in that much. I thought Javi played a pretty good game considering and hats off to Ben for a good showing today as well.

^What’s been said about Smith (on here) is that he is hurting and/or doesn’t handle double teams well

I saw little evidence of either … I know about Smith’s injury, but he’s been playing through it … As for handling double teams, I didn’t see many from VT

Williams for Smith must have been a defensive / matchup decision whenever the Hokies went smaller … That is an NBA coaching move – maintaining matchups … I did not agree with it today – I thought Smith should have played more in the 2nd half / overtime

I used to call up my friends, Dad and/or brother during and after games to discuss what has happened etc. None of us ever watch the games anymore so we no longer do that.

Has to be a bad sign as everyone of us has at least one NCSU degree.

Williams got hit in the head on a play in the game. Is that why he didn’t come back in?
