Wolfpack can’t overcome atrocious early effort (Updated at 5pm)

NC State’s basketball team decided to show up for the second half of today’s game at Boston College but by then the damage was already done. The embarrassing first half performance that lacked effort, focus and intensity dug the Wolfpack too deep a hole.

Perhaps the rest of the team simply followed the example of one of the Wolfpack’s seniors, Courtney Fells. If anyone wants a clinic in how to loaf through a game while exerting almost no effort then use your DVR to watch Courtney Fells today. Wow.

I don’t know who Fells thinks he is fooling – and maybe he is fooling this coaching staff – but he sure as hell is not fooling many of us who contribute to the Wolfpack Club for his scholarship. He entered the season with a physique that has obviously deteriorated over the last couple of years, and his effort has been consistent with what appears to be a lack of dedication off the floor. For the year, Fells is quickly approaching the record Brandon Costner set last season for number of easy passes dropped coupled with the number of lazy passes committed.

Today, I think Fells managed to play the entire game without boxing out a single Bost College Eagle while his perimeter defensive effort was as lackluster as his 2nd half effort at Duke earlier in the week. His shot selection was equally suspect, once appropriately drawing criticism from color commentator Jason Capel. He had one nice defensive play on a blocked shot; the problem is that he had to make that play to save face for playing bad defense that allowed his man to cut through the lane and easily catch an entry pass a couple of feet from the basket.

If you have limited time, just watch the first six and a half minutes of the game where Fells committed THREE unforced turnovers – one by having a simple pass slide through his hands and two boneheaded passes to Boston College defenders. Simultanwously, the player Fells was supposedly guarding managed to score almost half BC’s points in that time period. (Not that any other NC State player seemed to play defense in the first half). The official boxscore only shows Fells with two turnovers for the entire game. LOL! Riiiiiigh.

We’ve been increasingly frustrated with Fells’ anemic effort and resulting poor performances this year and just don’t think it is fair to ignore it any more. Many of the ‘little things’ like not coming to help the ball during pressure, failing to find the proper spacing without the ball on offense and not communicating with teammates on defense are things that don’t show up in the boxscore; although the boxscore showing 4 of 10 shooting; 0 of 4 from the three point line; and 0 of 2 from the free throw line certainly isn’t kind to Fells, either.

I expect someone will reference Fells’ lingering injury from the Davidson game. Maybe that has some merit. On the other hand, his inury has nothing to do with his lack of effort to find people to block out and play with just a tiny bit of consistent effort. Additionally seems just fine whenever there is a fast break for free points or an opportunity to get off a shot.

If there was any good news to come out of today’s game it would be the following:
(1) “The young guys” of Tracy Smith and Johnny Thomas again played very well and made things happen out there.
(2) Farnold Degand seems to be regaining some form and is gradually playing better. He is obviously the best option to start at point guard right now.
(3) Javi Gonzalez did not play.
(4) The official box score attributed State with only ten turnovers for the entire game.
(5) Johnny Thomas, Tracy Smith and Julius Mays combined for 8 of 11 shooting.

There was a lot of conversation in the open game entry. I am going to elevate one of the comments:

Well…All I can say is I’m proud of the effort in the 2nd half. We ran out of gas around the 6 minute mark, and everyone knew that when Trapani hit the three it was game.

If we put that same effort or even half of that effort in the first half, we win this game by 10. There was no effort whatsoever in the first half. I watched the game, but for those of you who didn’t it is apparent by the number of offensive rebounds that Boston College had. I can guarantee that 70% of the offensive boards came in the first half. Don’t get me wrong there were two, sometimes even three guys going for the board, but it’s a damn shame that they were all Boston College players.

Sid finally played the rotation we’ve been begging for. Costner, McCauley, Smith and the two guards. We made a 16-0 run with this lineup. Maybe Lowe will notice how good Smith and McCauley are together in the game, and keep Brandon at SF and put a rotation of Fells, Williams, Mays, and Degand in as guards. Maybe play Fergs for 5 mins a game, and see if he can provide. Also I wouldn’t mind seeing Thomas play some SF/SG some. He impressed me. In his few minutes he had some boards, hit a shot, and hustles like no one else on the court.

For all of you insulting Costner…drop it. Seriously. He’s changed his game completely. He got the ball completely stolen from him at the top of the key and instead of jogging down, he hustled down the court and made a good block, but unfortunately fouled the guy, but he HUSTLED . Another instance, A BC player got a rebound over Costner and ran it out, and Costner didn’t give up, chased him down and stole the ball from him. He’s hustling. That’s all you can ask for. His shot isn’t dropping right now, and he’s trying not to force it. Good for him. So seriously get off his back. All of you talk about other fans jumping on and off bandwagons, some of you are just as bad about jumping onto and off our players.

Degand played well, and had some good steals. The game is coming back to him. He can see things develop, he’s beginning to read people. Made some really nice passes, but also made a few bad ones. I honestly think he’ll turn out to be a good PG and I believe he’d be more than capable if not for the injury. I think Mays will be a better guard by the time his career is over, and is a better scorer, but he still makes a couple of freshman mistakes. He picks up his dribble a little too easily, and doesn’t look for his shot enough, but he’s getting there.

Ben also played well, but had a couple of cheap fouls called on him. You expect that playing on the road in the ACC, but not this bad. I may be the only one complaining about the refs, but I thought a lot of the loose balls that went out of bounds BC got. Which is funny considering how many people they had crashing the boards?? Anyways, Ben looked like a new man today, and wanted this win bad. It’s a shame he had to sit in the 2nd half.

So rotation rest of the year:

PG – Degand/Mays
SG – Fells/Williams/Thomas/Fergs (more when he’s back)
SF – Costner/Williams/Thomas
PF – Smith/Horner/Costner
C – McCauley/Smith/Costner

I would love to not see Dennis Horner in another minute of a red and white N.C. State jersey, but I think it’s inevitable. I also believe Gonzalez transfers. His minutes are done, which is unfortunate for him, but fortunate for N.C. State.

Good 2nd half effort Pack. Let’s go steal one from Miami and focus for 40 minutes. Let’s GO PACK

I was very disappointed in the first half effort.

I said earlier, we’d find out alot about this team and this staff today. What I think we’ve found out, is that if Lowe doesn’t get some great recruits in here, he’ll never coach an NCAA tournament game.

For whatever reason, he still insists on playing the “red” team for about 5 minutes. In addition to giving our opponents a +6 points differential, it also disrupts our starting 5s rhythm. I just can’t understand why we can’t subsitute one or two players a pop to get our starters a rest.

Regarding Fells – I remember seeing him as a freshman in the red/white game and in a completely heterosexual way saying, “Wow, this guy has a great basketball body.” Well, it doesn’t look he’s added any definition since his freshman year. While last year, I thought his outside shot improved significantly, this year, he’s taken a tremendous step back.

I don’t know whether his effort is meeting Sid’s expectations or not. If it isn’t, he’s sending a horrible message to the rest of the team by playing him lots of minutes.

Glad to see Tracy Smith play good again. He either seems to dominate or disappear – and really, that’s perfect for this team. We have talented guys, they just don’t consistently deliver – from game to game or even minute to minute.

Still, I think this team gets killed by not doing the little things every time. Whether it’s Fells, Degand, Mays or even Johnny Thomas who is great hustler most of the time, we just don’t do the little things that you have to do to win games. We don’t always hustle back on D, we don’t always box out, we don’t always make crisp passes our footwork on D is often attrocious.. Mistakes will happen, but I continue to see the same things from virtually EVERY PLAYER on this roster.

To me, the play that I think personifies where we are as a basketball team occurred when we cut the lead to 3 and were on a 16-0 run. Rice gets the ball about 22 feet from the basket ,Farnold is right there, Rice has an angle, but Farnold can force him to drive, where help awaits…he hesitates a nano-second and allows Rice to get off an uncontested 3 – that he of course, hits.

I don’t think this is a Sendek issue, he’s proving that he learned from his mistakes last time around and will probably take his team the tourney this year, where if they are a high seed, will probably be upset before reaching the Sweet 16. (I think the Pac 10 sucks in general, but is just awful this year.) If there’s one thing Lowe could learn from him, it’s running off players and suspending them. At NC State, Sendek was nowhere the saint or the genius he was made out to be. However, I remember him suspending Kenny Inge before a pivotal UNC game (during the NIT years) – and he ran off Adam Harrington and Keith Bean when they didn’t get w/ the program. A lot of posters on the old board used to wonder why Scooter didn’t get much time his freshman and sophmore years – it was because he didn’t know the offense and had brain farts on D – in short, he was very much like Courtney Fells – who rotted on the bench his freshmen year under Sendek.

Like I said, if Courtney isn’t doing what Sid expects him to do, SID has to take charge. He’s had the Sendek boys longer than Sendek had him – last year, McCauley and Costner were “benchable” – and to Sid’s credit, Costner logged a lot of pine last year. Fells this year – especially w/ the emergence of Johnny Thomas – is expendable.

If you are looking for a positive, we did a good job coming back AND Sid tried something new. I have been pleasantly surprised this year w/ what I see is a much better effort than last year. This game was critical if we wanted to be 6-10 or better and failed badly. But still, if Sid can continue to recruit like it looks like he’s going to these next 2 classes, I think we’ll be in pretty good shape. Right now, we just don’t have enough talent to make a lot of mistakes and win against most teams. Hopefully, that will have changed by 2010.

I’m glad I didn’t see the first half or I would have been in a drunken stupor for the 2nd…

    Degand/Mays
    Ferguson/Williams/Mays
    Thomas/Fells/Costner
    Costner/Smith
    Mccauley/Smith

That lineup is the best we have at the moment. Take it and run with it (As long as Smith gets atleast 20-25 minutes a game). Thomas is a joy to watch, it has been a while since I’ve seen a player go after rebounds as hard as he does.

Just finished watching the game – had to DVR the last 10 minutes.

I’m going to unequivocally call bullshit on finding ANYTHING positive to say about this game. Let me rant the reasons why:

    1) You absolutely cannot commend a team for playing with effort for PART of the game. That undermines what effort really means. If you can’t give it your best for 40 minutes, save the university the travel expenses and stay the hell home. Giving effort for 35 minutes is unacceptable, giving 14 minutes is complete dogshit.

    2) Fells was his usual half-assed self, for sure. But don’t get caught up in microanalysis – that was a complete team non-effort in the first half. Even when the game was close, it was only because BC couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean. They had 5 offensive rebounds on one possession, and started with an 8-1 rebounding edge. Once they made a few shots, the lead gradually expanded to 15. All becuase NC State, from top to bottom, gave an effort completely unworthy of wearing the uniform.

    3) Memo to Sidney Lowe – it’s too damned late to experiment with the big lineup. You had a slew of December and early January games to tinker, and you stubbornly refused to so much as play McCauley and Smith at the same time (which was inexcusable). We’re 1-and-f-ing-4 in ACC play now, Sid, and have yet to play UNC or Wake.In the past 7 years, we’ve seen “positionless” basketball and rigid personnel roles, and neither one makes any sense. Maybe somebody will discover the vast middle ground at some point in time.

    4) Memo re Sid – A good basketball coach would have at least a B-level understanding of the college game by the halfway point of his third season. Sid may be FINALLY learning, but not fast enough to survive in this league.

    5) Chop is (as usual) spot on – Sid is going to have to become a legendary recruiter to ever coach in an NCAAT game. He can’t miss on a single scholarship decision in the next 3 years. He MUST land Wall or Cousins. As I e-mailed to a friend a few weeks ago – we need Sid to become our version of Guy Lewis, or else he’ll be our version of Clyde Drexler.

    6) NC State is now 1-2 against ACC teams that won’t make the NCAA tourney (with the one win coming in home in OT against a team that won’t make the NIT). We are not close to turning the corner. Not by a longshot.

  5. turfpack 01/24/2009 at 10:17 PM #

    NCSTATE’s MEN(BOYS)BASKETBALL TEAM =WHAT A WASTE!

SORRY I’M JUST PISSED-TOMORROW’S MY BIRTHDAY-HOPED WE COULD ATLEAST BEAT BC-WHATEVER, WHY I CARE?

  6. LRM 01/24/2009 at 10:18 PM #

I think we’ve found our comfort zone.

  7. W0LFPack 01/24/2009 at 10:29 PM #

Ok…I agree with some of your comment BJD, but not even close to all of it.

First off, I agree, you can’t commend a team for playing half of the game, but that’s exactly what we did against Duke. We played 30-35 minutes of good solid basketball, and we’re happy with that. But when we play 10-15 minutes of solid basketball against a far less formidable opponent and still lose by the same amount, it means nothing?? I want consistency out of posters/fans just like WE all want consistency out of this team.

I disagree strongly that we have yet to turn a corner. Well Sid has already proved to be a much better recruiter than Arizona State’s coach every was. We didn’t lose to New Orleans nor ECU nor any team that we should have beating this year. Unlike last year. Also look at the differences in scores. Our team doesn’t give up. Down by 19 this year, and have it to a one possession game…last year if we’re down by 19, we lose by 30.

I think we have more talent than BC, but they have a senior leader, and an amazing PG, who can control the whole team. We do lack some fundamentals, but what team doesn’t? BC beat UNC…UNC lacks defensive fundamentals. BC then gets beat by Harvard, and they just completely lacked all fundamentals. Wake Forest just got beat by VT, and they also lack defensive fundamentals. The only difference is, we rarely put it together for 40 minutes. That’s been the case since HWSNBN was the coach. We’d get the lead, and quit playing, quit trying.

I just want everyone to quit saying that there is no progress and this team isn’t developing. It may not be fast, but we are.

  8. Rochester 01/24/2009 at 10:48 PM #

Chop and BJD are right. And right now this team isn’t worth my effort to think of anything else to add. They really pissed me off today. Yeah, they didn’t quit. Hip, hip, hooray. Maybe I’ll send my Wolfpack Club dues to the Energizer Bunny this year. He never quits.

  9. BJD95 01/24/2009 at 10:59 PM #

There’s a big difference between playing WELL for 30 minutes (vs. Duke) and playing hard for 30 minutes and mailing in the rest. I only saw the second half on Tuesday, but thought we gave EFFORT the whole way, just played poorly down the stretch, and showed some fragility (and our fragility is a separate major concern from our tendency to mail it in like we did today).

I don’t understnd the reasoning of seeing “progress” in the ability to stay WITHIN ELEVEN of a lousy BC team because we theoretically COULD have beaten them by playing like we gave a damn for more than half the game. Any team that goes into a game at 1-3 in league play and candy-asses it for the entire first half has serious structural problems. That is not something that just needs a little tweaking.

It goes without saying why teams with resumes like UNC and Wake can get a mulligan for a really lousy game – and NC State cannot. Plus, we already HAD our “mulligan” game, with the bed-shitting against Florida State.

Today was a pitiful effort from a pitiful basketball team. And we are well on our way to establishing ourselves as a pitiful basketball program, fitting in nicely with our pitiful athletics department.

“and he ran off Adam Harrington … ”

^If there was one State player I ever hated, he was it.

… Anyway, I think we find a way to beat Central … maybe

I don’t know … I think we may scratch out a couple of more victories, but this sure does hurt

  11. wolfpack95 01/24/2009 at 11:35 PM #

I didn’t watch the game today. I honestly couldn’t have cared less…largely b/c I could have called the final boxscore w/o watching.

I won’t be attending the Miami game either. That will be another beatdown of our sorry team. What a shame.

  12. Old School Wolf 01/25/2009 at 12:31 AM #

Had the sound down so what follows may not be the facts regarding Fells attempting that awful three shot that was commented on. Once (I think near the end of the 1st half,) Sid signaled for a quick three. I think Sid was watching the shot/game clock and wanted to get two possessions/shot attempts before the half ended. Fells may have thought he was carrying out instructions. Also, maybe 2 is Fell’s (in spite of all shortcomings) best position. All of us decided 3 was best for him but maybe not. Wouldn’t give up on Fell’s yet until he plays awhile at 2 with the big lineup playing 3-5.(unless Fells has indeed given up.)

  13. choppack1 01/25/2009 at 1:25 AM #

Yep, and this has been a problem since 2006-2007 season.

Do we not have enough evidence to at least fire Fowler? I mean, come on – would Sidney Lowe have been hired at any other Division 1A school in America? And this isn’t a knock against Lowe, and it’s certainly not his fault, but it’s a simple fact. As BJD mentions, this has been tried before – and it ended up badly.

  14. choppack1 01/25/2009 at 1:32 AM #

Old School – You are right – Sid called for a quick on the other end – it was lose -lose, we took a quick shot, the rebound bounced around for a second, BC got the last shot – and made it.

  15. wolfonthehill 01/25/2009 at 7:48 AM #

BJD – Agree across the board with what you’re saying. During the S6 liveblog that I was on, I (1) had to be the voice of reason, making sure no one got their hopes up during the 17-0 run, only to have them dashed again, (2) never had any doubt whatsoever about the outcome, starting about 5 minutes in, (3) started talking fairly seriously about whether it’d be worth just shuttering the B-ball program and promoting our hockey team to varsity level (to stay within Title IX restrictions, of course).

Let’s be clear about something… this team is worse than the team we fielded during Sid’s first year. By a longshot. Whether that comes from inadequate talent or clueless coaching it irrelevant… you don’t have to be competing for conference championships in Year 3 (although TOB is about to show that it’s quite reasonable to do so… and in a tougher sport to turn a program around than basketball), but you do have to be showing a pulse… some sign of progress.

Instead, Sid is showing signs of regression and having WORSE control over his team… LESS ability to motivate them to give a damn… LESS of a concept of substitution patterns… LESS willingness to make bold personnel decisions, to go with who puts forth effort and gets results instead of who’s been around the longest… LESS ability to teach a point guard basics like when to pick the ball up – and, of course, when you NEVER pick it up (like in double-teams & in corners).

I don’t know the answer… there’s no way Sid’s going anywhere this year… there’s no way he’s going to be the Messiah of recruiting… and there’s no way he’s going to be able to coach average ACC talent into the postseason in a way that we would view to be the bare minimum. I don’t think there’s much of a chance he ends up NOT being our version of Clyde Drexler… it’s up to us to figure out how to best deal with that over the next 2-3 years while it lasts.

Me? I’m not going to say I won’t watch because I will. However, I will continue to approach games with a certainty that the outcome has already been determined, then watch with morbid curiosity to see how closely the game follows what appears to be a consistent script. I will continue to see how closely I can call the final score of a game by the early portion of the second half (I’ve missed by three total points in the last two games).

I won’t stop watching because I love NC State… I want us to succeed… I want to know the state of the program as well as anyone… but I will not allow wins or losses to affect my happiness and well-being one way or the other.

Unfortunately for Sid, once my brain flips that switch, history says that a coach doesn’t last more than two more interminable years.

I’m skipping detailed game analysis because most of it’s been said… I’ll just stick with the fact that I’d run the five guys on the court who seem to CARE the most… and at this point, that’s Degand/Mays, Ferg, Thomas, Smith, and Costner. I would run those guys out there until they dropped from exhaustion… I’d rather have tired guys in the game at the end who give a shit than someone who watches idly while a rebound BOUNCES on the floor before taking a single step toward it.

Agree that there’s no silver lining from yesterday… the only one imaginable would be that Sid might “get” that Tracy should be playing 30+ minutes/game (or until he fouls out, whichever comes first)… but I would’ve thought Sid would “get” that last time he exploded and won a game for us… or that Sid would “get” it by looking at the stats and realizing that he basically scores a point a minute when he’s in, and that he triggers an offensive burst when he’s in the game more than any other player on the team. But if he hasn’t learned already, he won’t today… so we’re stuck with what we’ve got.

And what we’ve got is one bad ACC basketball team. If we win four in the league, I’ll be absolutely shocked… meaning that we likely take the honor of being the ACC team that doesn’t qualify for the Big 10 challenge for the second year in the row. I mean, we’re talking about “channeling the spirit of Les Robinson” kind of bad here… except Les’s teams were at least fun to watch on offense. The fun and joy are gone from Wolfpack basketball today.

“I disagree strongly that we have yet to turn a corner. Well Sid has already proved to be a much better recruiter than Arizona State’s coach every was. We didn’t lose to New Orleans nor ECU nor any team that we should have beating this year.”

And I will disagree strongly that we have turned any kind of corner. In fact, we may well be getting worse. I’m not going to get into any kind of silly debate about the two coaches. But it seems to me Sid doesn’t stand a chance when it comes to coaching. Recruiting is his ONLY hope, as has been stated earlier.

You fail to mention we lost to Davidson, a team we beat last year. Davidson is no where near as good as they were last year.

I’m sorry but I can’t get excited that we lost close games to Marquette, Florida and Davidson. Why? Because we haven’t learned from those losses. We continue to make silly mistakes game after game, and it’s costing us. We have beaten one VERY bad GT team at home in overtime in ACC play. That’s it. And that isn’t going to ge it done. Sid is looking at his third straight year of sub-par results, his second straight year of dismal results in conference play. That’s reality. We don’t have a shot in hell against Wake and Carolina. And that’s a damn shame. The possibility of an NIT bid is quickly diminishing. And you want to say there is progress? Of what kind?

  17. Alpha Wolf 01/25/2009 at 8:18 AM #

Wolfonthehill: GT is worse than we are. We might manage one more win, maybe two, but they might not get any.

I have to agree with BJD95 and say that there’s nothing to be take away from this game that we can label as positive. No moral victories, no real hope for the future.

I can agree with a lot with what was said, however I can’t agree with not seeing Horner in Red and White again. He has played some big games for us, helped seal our ONLY ACC win of the year last week, and hasn’t turned the ball over as badly as some of his other teammates.

The first half was brutal to watch.

The second half was better, but the same damn result.

  20. BAC79 01/25/2009 at 9:39 AM #

“We ran out of gas around the 6 minute mark”

At this point in the season why are we running out of gas? We are not playing 6 players. The only players with any reason to run out of gas are those recovering from serious injuries.

  21. BJD95 01/25/2009 at 9:43 AM #

We are extremely lucky that UVA and GT are every bit as shitty as we are this year. It would be more embarrassing without company in the cellar.

We most certainly do have ample evidence to merit firing Fowler. A competent AD should have one full year (including offseason) to evaluate Sid and see if there’s anything worth saving there. I think it’s 90-95% likely that said imaginary competent AD would end up firing Sid.

For the future, here’s a good rule of thumb for hiring alumni. If the coaching prospect is only willing to consider your job offer (say, like Bill Cowher) because he’s an alum, then it’s a good idea. If said prospect is only getting your job offer because he’s an alum, then it’s a terrible idea.

Les Robinson, Chuck Amato, Sidney Lowe. Connect the dots.

  22. TheCOWDOG 01/25/2009 at 9:59 AM #

We have run out of words for this team once more. In a run of 1 3/4
seasons we have managed to just about cover all the angles, all the perspectives, all the criticism, all the praise.

( Though in my mind, praise for this club is along the order of participation trophies for youth rec badminton. )[ Where’s HAPPYpackdad when you need him?] 🙂

If it ain’t the coachin’, it’s the PG. If it ain’t the PG it’s the bigs. If it ain’t Fells, it’s Horner. If it ain’t TOs, it’s rebounding. Need I go on?

The problem is it’s all of it. Mind you, this is a rhetorical question. When has this team EVER clicked on all cylinders for the span of more than 15 min ? For the life of me, or for all the reasons above, this team is just not capable of putting it together.

Only Charles Schultz could give us the real answers as to why this club will never get the kick off.

  23. wolfonthehill 01/25/2009 at 10:16 AM #

    ^ I said something similar yesterday. If it’s not X, it’s Y.

Tuesday, it was turnovers… fix THEM, and we win!!!, we heard the faithful say.

Yesterday, we fix the turnovers… but then allow BC to grab 60% of their first-half misses by our failure to simply care enough to try. Fix THAT, and we win!!!

Every game, it will be something… maybe turnovers, maybe rebounding, maybe cold shooting, maybe an opponent going for 40. The common theme is that we are unable to play a game well enough to beat any decent opponent.

We are in fact the opposite of a good team. Good teams “find a way to win”. We, on the other hand, find a way to lose… every meaningful game.

Somebody has been passing around the hater-aid again.

This team is not that bad and really close to finding the formula for success. I really think the 1st half is a result of hearing really bad news ie: Coach Yow passing on, God bless her soul. It was a emotional let down. Sometimes fans don’t realize that there is more to life than basketball.

The fact that they came back from 20 down on the road and made a game of it showed a lot of heart.. At a time when their hearts were hurting.

I like the big line up. I think it will work well early in games and against teams like UNC, Wake and Miami. Tracy Smith deserves to play more. I don’t care for the mass subs. Work in Johnny with the starters, he adds a good spark.

Also for some reason everyone we have played this year has their best game against us ie: Curry, James, Henderson, Nick C., Rice and Booker.(and it wasn’t like there wasn’t anybody in their face) Sooner or later the tide is going to turn and everything we throw up will go in.

We have 11 more games to play. I’m going to turn down the hater-aid and go out on a limb and say we go 9-2 and go deep in the ACC tourney.

    Go Pack!!

“And can anyone remember the last player that improved his game while at State?”

Someone said Atsur, and it’s true he did improve, but he came in with the right attitude and already having the skills to be a leader. I’d go back, waaay back, to Todd Fuller if you’re talking about all around development as a player.

“To me, the play that I think personifies where we are as a basketball team occurred when we cut the lead to 3 and were on a 16-0 run. Rice gets the ball about 22 feet from the basket ,Farnold is right there, Rice has an angle, but Farnold can force him to drive, where help awaits…he hesitates a nano-second and allows Rice to get off an uncontested 3 – that he of course, hits.”

I felt the exact same way. It seemed like that little nano second took forever to develop, and it also seemed like Rice was just waiting for Degand to step over and play him straight up. But Degand was shading so hard to the right and trying to get in position to get around the pick, that all that Rice had to do was to basically shift over a half step and let his uncontested three hit the bottom of the net. There is no doubt that Tyrese Rice is GOOD and hard to stop, so I’m not really faulting Degand here, but I’d rather see him guarding Rice where he already IS, than trying to over anticipate where he might go next. If there is a pick, Degand should feel confident that one of his teammates will be there to help him out anyway. But, and as we all know…

It’s all about position, and I cannot, for the life of me, understand why any player, even at twelve years old and playing in his own backyard, would need to have that hammered into his head.

That was a separate incidence, it’s not just Degand, and it’s nothing new to Wolfpack BB since the arrival of Sidney Lowe. It is something that has been happening for much longer than three years and it is very frustrating to watch.
