Birmingham – QB talk & Harrison Beck

I’ve got a lot of random items from the bowl game but will probably get around to the items in a fragmented manner.

We’ve already touched upon NC State’s great fans (Click here)

On Monday night in Birmingham after the loss to Rutgers Monday’s the group I was with ran into a lot of players from both Rutgers and NC State. Two pretty interesting items came out of this:

(1) Mike Teel from Rutgers – spoke with Rutgers quarterback Mike Teel at Dave’s in Five Points. He was very gracious and seemed like a good guy. He approached the topic of the game by immediately commenting on how the Wolfpack’s loss of Russell Wilson obviously changed the complexion of the game. (If only some of the idiot Rutgers fans that we encountered could have been so aware of reality &/or gracious).

Teel went on to praise our defensive line as fantastic. We asked directly who stood out to him and he said #97 is great. (Willie Young) He then went on to say that #56 is fantastic (Nate Irving)…and that #44 (Ray Michel) is a great linebacker. The Michel comment was welcome considering that his performance this season was somewhat inconsistent. Note that Michel got a huge pop on Teel during the game so the impact of that hit surely helped form his view.

Teel added what appeared obvious on the field – he hasn’t been hit like this all year. Said his bell was still ringing from some of those hits. My only surprise was that he didn’t refer to Clem Johnson by name as Johnson had an excellent bowl game.

(2) Harrison Beck – One of the Wolfpack players with whom we spoke on Monday night indicated that “the team wanted to kick Harrison Beck’s ass” because Beck literally smiled and was laughing after throwing his interception. He said that everyone was pissed.

Wow.

I can’t say that this is necessarily surprising as it was obvious that the entire team lost a lot of energy when Beck came in. Of course ‘losing Russell Wilson’ was a large part of the feelings; but ‘(lack of faith/motivation/interest in rallying around Beck’ may have been an even larger impact as the team seemed to unite with renewed vigor when Daniel Evans took the helm.

Back in September when Russell was hurt and Beck had to play we discussed the obvious rift between Beck and Coach Tom O’Brien. In light of the past problems that exist in this relationship then – if this news is true – I don’t think many Wolfpackers would argue with thanking Mr. Beck for his time and revoking his scholarship for the future. There is no need to have this kind of ‘example of commitment’ creating problems within the program.

Next season’s quarterback position projects to have Russell Wilson’s return, Mike Glennon become eligible and Everett Proctor to redshirt. Starting safety Clem Johnson could always play quarterback in an emergency. Perhaps there could be some value in recruiting a multipurpose JUCO quarterback into the program for ‘insurance’ in 2009/2010? Where is Olin Hannum when you need him?

Beck was totally unprepared and indifferent. I could read his body language from my seats. Too bad we didn’t run the ball for a 3 & Out and take the field goal. Hindsight…huh…

I had the chance to speak to Donald Bowens at Twist and Shout after the game. He was really upbeat and positive about next year. He said we would be good. I also asked him about his spine and he said he was fine. Good news. He was also very outgoing and really nice and sincere. He came up to several of my friends and introduced himself and initiated conversations…I would have picked his brain more but by the time I got around speaking to him his primal instincts had taken over and he had other things on his mind…

I am way less scared of Proctor as a True Freshman being number 3 QB than I am Beck under center again.

    1 RW
    2 Glennon
    3 Proctor

Proctor should never see the field next year even as number 3. The quality of QB should help eliminate that.

One thing that i think has gone unnoticed about our offense. We have the reputation of running the read-option out of a spread formation but, as the year has gone on, we have run very few plays where the OB runs. In fact we have been pretty multiple with our offense. For example we ran a lot of I formation against Duke. WE have run 2 TEs, 2 RB, Wilson over center, pure shotgun. The point I think I am making is that we run a lot of things that can be run by any style of QB.

Another item. Does anyone notice that while most QBs have a play list on their our that our QBs don’t? i notice this watching all the other teams but our QBs get the signal and don’t have to refer to some play chart.

Someone help me out as I don’t know anything about Proctor. Is he a runner like Wilson? If so, does that mean that our first string QB is a runner, Second string is a drop-back pocket QB, and 3rd string is a runner. What kind of offensive changes would we go through if we ever changed QBs? As for Beck – someone praised his “Athletic ability.” I don’t see it. He can throw a football. Notice that I did not say “complete passes.” And he is built like a Florida State kicker. Pudgy.

I’ll say this now, and you can quote me on it when it happens.

Harrison Beck will not play football for NC State next year.

other than that, I’m proud of our team for the way they turned this season around and put so much of themselves into each and every game

He is an exceptional athlete. He’s got good size, runs about a 4.5, has very good quickness and is a pretty good punter. He is a good enough passer that he will get a look at QB, but ultimately, I think he ends up at free safety.
