Semi-Live Bowl Blogging from Blowing Rock

I am in a mountain condo on my blackberry, so don’t expect updates every 5 minutes or graphics of any kind. But I am ready and willing to sort of live blog today, for the last time in 2008.

I feel really good about today’s game, which I fear means impending doom.

3:04 – Eugene loses fumble on first offensive play. This is not starting well.

3:06 – Irving can’t hold onto tough INT. Rutgers converts on 3rd and long. Touchdown is imminent. We are going to have to score almost every possession today.

3:12 – I was wrong – Scarlet Knights forced to settle for 3? Nope, fake FG run in for six.

3:43 – While I ate my steak, the Pack scored 10 points. It would likely be 14-6, if not for a bad 3rd down drop by Andre Brown. So far, the WRs have come up huge. The RBs? Not so much. Wilson near flawless, with only 2 incompletions (throw away to avoid sack, and Brown’s drop). 10-6 Pack after 15 minutes of play.

3:50 – Teel misses wide open receivers on back to back plays. Rutgers punts from our 40 once again. Mike Archer still bending and not breaking.

3:54 – Circus catch by #13 (can that really be the Owen Spencer we know and love?).

4:01 – We are completely shutting down Rutgers’ run game. Maybe everyone does, but I like it anyway.

4:03 – I worry about this review. Thought he made the first down. Wait a minute, it’s not being reviewed! State takes over after a pretty weak punt. Still 10-6.

4:09 – Very weird and ineffective rugby-style punt by Pierson. Rutgers will take over in Wolfpack territory. Both offenses have really slowed down after quick starts.

4:17 – Nice defensive stand by Archer’s unit. Rutgers kicker shanks a bunny field goal. No wonder they ran a fake on their first attempt. State needs to bleed some clock on this possession, and not give Rutgers’ offense another shot this half.

4:25 – These officials suck. Sucking in our favor, but still…

4:30 – Spencer back to his usual butterfingered self. So Russell takes matters into his own hands on a great 15-yard scramble.

4:36 – Touchdown, Andre Brown!! That drive was all Russell, all the time. Let the 2009 Heisman campaign begin. As I’ve said, I would take him over Tebow right now. 17-6, 38 seconds left in the half. Shitty kickoff gives Rutgers a shot. Fuck.

4:39 – I can never remember a game being officiated more in NC State’s favor. This is pretty bad ass! 17-6 Pack at the half.

5:08 – If the coaches want RW to stay on the sidelines, they will have to shoot him. Critical 4th and 1 here.

5:10 – First and goal.

5:12 – Nice, timely holding call by our friendly zebras.

5:13 – Rutgers certainly practiced their gadget plays over the break. I’ve never seen an OT throw a pass in a game at any level.

5:15 – Shitty kicker time. He finally makes one. 17-9 Pack.

5:18 – Holy shit, we really are going to try playing Beck. Fuck me.

5:20 – Time to throw deep, Harrison. Jesus, that was a bad throw even by Beck’s meager standards. And the punt is blocked. Rutgers ball on our 15. Wilson needs to go back in, without question.

5:25 – One point game, all the momentum with Rutgers. Wilson is the only answer.

5:31 – We completely waste a huge kickoff return by Graham. Beck is worse than usual today. You have to think Tom O’Brien is simply taking the long view here – this game is a glorified exhibition, and he isn’t going to take any chances with 2009. Rutgers is going to win big unless our defense or special teams can come up with a score.

5:37 – Clem gets a pick, State ball on Rutgers 19. Should have been worth 3, but Beck throws it directly to a Scarlet Knight. Double fuck.

5:43 – First and goal. Stick a fork in this one, the Pack is done. It was still a good season.

5:52 – Here’s where we are – 13 minutes left, down 2. We need to run the kickoff back to the Rutgers 25 or better so Josh can kick a field goal.

6:01 – Wow, Evans had one more series of magic in him after all. That was the most unexpected thing I have ever seen. 23-19 after failed 2-point conversion.

6:16 – Second drive does not end well. Rutgers ball up three.

Final Score – Rutgers 29, NC State 23.

Evans just sits there on the sidelines. No one talks to him. Just has a blank look. I have a feeling Hail Mary is going to be our only prayer.

    This is really hard…

I’ve been trying to curb my profanity in front of my 9 month old daughter, so I’m watching this game and I’m running out of creative ways of cursing this game without saying what I really want to say.

Let it fly, Pitbull. She won’t have any memory of it.

i just hate being a state fan and all the injuries that kill us every single year in every major sport i mean i know i should be used to it by now but it really is rediculous and always happens at just the right time to send a season or a game into the shitter

Ok … off to the basketball game

    Good effort, Daniel + gang

More than confident we would’ve won the game if RW is in there … Defense can rest, we’re not going 3 and out or turning the ball over every series and we probably win by 10 or more

Well, that was unfortunate … but it is NC State

Hopefully RW is ok … Hats off to the team for all their great efforts down the stretch and even getting us into a bowl game

    Go Pack!

She may grow up thinking I’m a very religious person though…

    “Jesus!”

    “HOLY…!!”

    “SON OF…!!”

    “Oh Lord”

    “God Please!”

that’s funny. I’ve been cussing and we have twins on the way and I’m thinking that’s got to change!

  8. rky 12/29/2008 at 6:22 PM #

death by beck . . . . it is a slow and painful death but it is surely what killed us.

  9. rky 12/29/2008 at 6:26 PM #

For those of you watching the game at home with kid(s) . . . have you not figured out this is the PERFECT excuse to head to your local watering hole + huge hdtv to have some quality manly time? I, too, have a young one and my wife MUCH prefers I head to the local sports bar to have a few beers, hang out with friends and see the game . . . as opposed to my little one soaking up all of that lovely creative language I spew at moments just like this.

As much as I disagree if Wilson could play, he should have. I still believe I best chance was with Evans not Beck. I fault the coaching staff for playing Beck over Evans opposed to “saving” Wilson for next year.

Oh well, let me be the first to say it…..it was only the Pappa Johns Bowl…”theres always next year”.

my Tarhole friend just called to say:
been there, done that. concerning PitBull…
my nephew learned to say SHIT at 10 months.
learned it from his momma: my sister.
of course, he pronounced it as “Chit”.

well it was a fun season while it lasted……..man i hate yankees though they were dead with wilson in there but of course injury oh well sucks for evans to go out like that but really im not angy because this is complete bullshit and it sucks to not have russell for a whole game

  13. PackDawg95 12/29/2008 at 6:35 PM #

well.. we would have won that with Russell and we don’t have to name our second twin Daniella. Everyone have a great new year and let’s look forward to a great 2009 season!

  14. McLovin 12/29/2008 at 6:35 PM #

There has to be an agreement btwn TOB and Avent that Russell cannot play if he goes out with an injury…

If he can jog, put him in! Evans had his storytale ending already.

    Revoke Beck’s scholarship

One of the many things I love about my wife is that she’s just as much a fan as I am and would be right there at the sports bar with me. We’d have to leave the baby with our babysitter. Only problem there is that the babysitter is a UNC fan so I do all I can to limit the Tarhole contamination.

N.C. State, a eutopia for masochists.

  17. BassPacker 12/29/2008 at 6:38 PM #

Beck is a total waste of a scholarship.

  18. catchme16 12/29/2008 at 6:40 PM #

anytime beck is in the game i want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty fork

  19. McLovin 12/29/2008 at 6:42 PM #

I blame the defense as well.

Allowing a TWO play touchdown drive immediately after a game-changing touchdown of our own was PITIFUL…

  20. catchme16 12/29/2008 at 6:43 PM #

yea the defense really didnt help us out today either oh well just repeat the ncsu mantra wait till next year

  21. Packster 12/29/2008 at 6:44 PM #

It was the right decision to leave Wilson out if he was hurt. This is just a building year. No sense ruining his career on a 6-6 or 7-6 season in what is for all practical purposes a meaningless bowl. Evans came in and did about the best we could have hoped for given the circumstances. I just hope RW didn’t tear his ACL or something. I guess we’ll know for sure in the next day or two. When you have a quarterback that runs as much as he does, you are going to have injuries every now and then. Regardless of the score, we know with RW in this game we were clearly the better team and would’ve won easily. With Glennon at the back-up next year things will be better. We are going to be a force to be reckoned with next season.

You have to give it to O’Brien for staying true to his goals, he easily could have pushed Wilson to play in the 2nd half, and with just Wilson throwing from the pocket we would have maybe won . . . BUT O’Brien didn’t even consider it.

It has been a good a year and we all have something to look forward to in football next year. With a healthy Wilson and the returning players we’ll have a shot to win the ACC . . . we’ll see what happens of course.

By the way . . . just to sleep better tonight, don’t forget:

    We beat ECU
    We beat Wake Forest
    We beat Duke

    We whipped UNC!!!

Rutgers is who I thought they were. State still had a shot at the end, while many thought Rutgers would run over them all game. And that with essentially no QB for the 2nd half. I’m looking forward to the luxury of Glennon and Wilson next year.

On one hand, I’m proud of our team (thinking about the entirety of the season) and glad that we even had an opportunity to play in this game. I think we also played as tough as possible with that little bit of luck that every team needs slipping away at halftime with Russell Wilson’s knee. On the other hand, we will always be left thinking about what might have been both for this game and this season due to injuries.

  25. Scooter 12/29/2008 at 7:05 PM #

    Also, 41-10 (I can’t help it, I’m a lifer).
