Semi-Live Bowl Blogging from Blowing Rock

I am in a mountain condo on my blackberry, so don’t expect updates every 5 minutes or graphics of any kind. But I am ready and willing to sort of live blog today, for the last time in 2008.

I feel really good about today’s game, which I fear means impending doom.

3:04 – Eugene loses fumble on first offensive play. This is not starting well.

3:06 – Irving can’t hold onto tough INT. Rutgers converts on 3rd and long. Touchdown is imminent. We are going to have to score almost every possession today.

3:12 – I was wrong – Scarlet Knights forced to settle for 3? Nope, fake FG run in for six.

3:43 – While I ate my steak, the Pack scored 10 points. It would likely be 14-6, if not for a bad 3rd down drop by Andre Brown. So far, the WRs have come up huge. The RBs? Not so much. Wilson near flawless, with only 2 incompletions (throw away to avoid sack, and Brown’s drop). 10-6 Pack after 15 minutes of play.

3:50 – Teel misses wide open receivers on back to back plays. Rutgers punts from our 40 once again. Mike Archer still bending and not breaking.

3:54 – Circus catch by #13 (can that really be the Owen Spencer we know and love?).

4:01 – We are completely shutting down Rutgers’ run game. Maybe everyone does, but I like it anyway.

4:03 – I worry about this review. Thought he made the first down. Wait a minute, it’s not being reviewed! State takes over after a pretty weak punt. Still 10-6.

4:09 – Very weird and ineffective rugby-style punt by Pierson. Rutgers will take over in Wolfpack territory. Both offenses have really slowed down after quick starts.

4:17 – Nice defensive stand by Archer’s unit. Rutgers kicker shanks a bunny field goal. No wonder they ran a fake on their first attempt. State needs to bleed some clock on this possession, and not give Rutgers’ offense another shot this half.

4:25 – These officials suck. Sucking in our favor, but still…

4:30 – Spencer back to his usual butterfingered self. So Russell takes matters into his own hands on a great 15-yard scramble.

4:36 – Touchdown, Andre Brown!! That drive was all Russell, all the time. Let the 2009 Heisman campaign begin. As I’ve said, I would take him over Tebow right now. 17-6, 38 seconds left in the half. Shitty kickoff gives Rutgers a shot. Fuck.

4:39 – I can never remember a game being officiated more in NC State’s favor. This is pretty bad ass! 17-6 Pack at the half.

5:08 – If the coaches want RW to stay on the sidelines, they will have to shoot him. Critical 4th and 1 here.

5:10 – First and goal.

5:12 – Nice, timely holding call by our friendly zebras.

5:13 – Rutgers certainly practiced their gadget plays over the break. I’ve never seen an OT throw a pass in a game at any level.

5:15 – Shitty kicker time. He finally makes one. 17-9 Pack.

5:18 – Holy shit, we really are going to try playing Beck. Fuck me.

5:20 – Time to throw deep, Harrison. Jesus, that was a bad throw even by Beck’s meager standards. And the punt is blocked. Rutgers ball on our 15. Wilson needs to go back in, without question.

5:25 – One point game, all the momentum with Rutgers. Wilson is the only answer.

5:31 – We completely waste a huge kickoff return by Graham. Beck is worse than usual today. You have to think Tom O’Brien is simply taking the long view here – this game is a glorified exhibition, and he isn’t going to take any chances with 2009. Rutgers is going to win big unless our defense or special teams can come up with a score.

5:37 – Clem gets a pick, State ball on Rutgers 19. Should have been worth 3, but Beck throws it directly to a Scarlet Knight. Double fuck.

5:43 – First and goal. Stick a fork in this one, the Pack is done. It was still a good season.

5:52 – Here’s where we are – 13 minutes left, down 2. We need to run the kickoff back to the Rutgers 25 or better so Josh can kick a field goal.

6:01 – Wow, Evans had one more series of magic in him after all. That was the most unexpected thing I have ever seen. 23-19 after failed 2-point conversion.

6:16 – Second drive does not end well. Rutgers ball up three.

Final Score – Rutgers 29, NC State 23.

Who the hell was that ball thrown too?? You have a running back as a third option for a reason. Plenty of time to see him.

Great. Punt Block. Don’t waste Wilson on this game, let’s make sure him and Glennon are fighting for starter in spring ball. Good season. We had the game where we needed it, but I’m fine with where we ended and where we’re headed. Let’s go pack.

For the record, I’m not giving up on them, and we still have a chance to win this game, however, we need to run the ball efficiently, and run short passes.

Oh, yeah. Let’s go pack basketball tonight.

And, they just scored…more than likely going for 2.

Beck is fucking horrible..At least we played a good 1st half.

  3. BassPacker 12/29/2008 at 5:23 PM #

Time to prove yourselve Beck………and Defense. Both have to step up if we are gonna win now.

  4. catchme16 12/29/2008 at 5:23 PM #

wow we are a completely shit football team when russell wilson is not on the field hopefully though next year glennon will be ready for an opourtunity like this unlike any of our other backups this year but maybe we can get something going and hang on to our 1 point lead

  5. wufpup76 12/29/2008 at 5:25 PM #

Please don’t waste Russell on this s*itty game if there’s any chance of him getting seriously injured … In the grand scheme of things this game literally means nothing

Yeah, it’d be nice to win – but better things await for this program no matter what happens in the Papajohn Bowl

  6. W0LFPack 12/29/2008 at 5:26 PM #

Well, I was gonna say if special teams is ok, we can win too….Great return by Graham, but should have probably taken that one further.

Do we HAVE to play Beck? What about Evans? He is, after all, a senior, and maybe a little smarter………

  8. wolfpackdawg 12/29/2008 at 5:27 PM #

    HE IS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good God.

  9. wufpup76 12/29/2008 at 5:27 PM #

Once again … DON’T THROW THE BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. catchme16 12/29/2008 at 5:28 PM #

  11. PackDawg95 12/29/2008 at 5:29 PM #

two series with beck and no intercetions. i’m optimistic! Let’s go d and get an interception…

  12. timswar 12/29/2008 at 5:30 PM #

Wow, this is just reliving the SC game at the beginning of the season.

Beck is so easy to defend against, just put a little pressure on him and he’ll panic immediately.

I hope Glennon at least stick around for next year so Beck won’t be our backup. I’d actually prefer Evans at this point.

  13. W0LFPack 12/29/2008 at 5:31 PM #

for those who can’t watch…we get a return to their 40 yard line, then go three and out. Andre Brown and Eugene are going to have to break a couple long ones. Our OL has not been great today, and Beck does not have the escape ability RW has. Nor does he have the decision making ability. Don’t give up, not yet.

By the way, I’m gonna make some shirts…In Russ we Trus…t

  14. BassPacker 12/29/2008 at 5:33 PM #

    CLEM !!!

  15. rky 12/29/2008 at 5:33 PM #

What a time for a pick!!! Nice job, D!

  16. W0LFPack 12/29/2008 at 5:34 PM #

Picked off…CLEM JOHNSON. Good field position, maybe we can do something….HOPEFULLY.

  17. PackDawg95 12/29/2008 at 5:34 PM #

    INTERCEPTION! WE needed that

  18. wufpup76 12/29/2008 at 5:35 PM #

34 made the play … Clem picked it off

  19. MrPlywood 12/29/2008 at 5:35 PM #

    Excellent. We need 7!

  20. W0LFPack 12/29/2008 at 5:35 PM #

Intercepton, back to them. No one even close for the pack to the ball. Literally pathetic.

By the way…we we’re in field goal position.

  21. rky 12/29/2008 at 5:36 PM #

Dear God . . . . what part of ‘DON’T THROW’ do you not understand, Beck?!? Even Wilson looks like he’s gonna puke on the sideline after that crap throw.

  22. PackDawg95 12/29/2008 at 5:36 PM #

INTERCETION (RUTGERS) WE DIDN’T NEED THAT…SEE ABOVE

  23. levelsixtyfour 12/29/2008 at 5:36 PM #

Seriously. If I was Beck I would give up on football and focus my efforts elsewhere. Pathetic.

  24. MrPlywood 12/29/2008 at 5:36 PM #

What – they can’t just run the ball?

  25. seanb724 12/29/2008 at 5:37 PM #

Beck has to be the worst D1 QB I have ever seen. Two 3 and outs and then the pick was thrown right to the Rutgers defender.

    🙁
