There might be trouble on the Pirate ship, as it looks like there’s some substance behind the rumors that head coach Skip Holtz might be ready to jump overboard for a BCS conference coaching gig:

WSYR (Syracuse, NY): Holtz to SU Rumors Continue To Swirl

It looks like East Carolina head football coach Skip Holtz may be the top target to replace Greg Robinson at Syracuse.

Holtz will be in New York on Sunday to celebrate the induction of his father, Lou Holtz, into the National Football Foundation’s College Hall of Fame.

SU athletic director Daryl Gross is expected to be there as well.

If this comes to pass, expect the Big Four schools to take a long hard look at the Pirate commit list to see if there’s anyone they might want to poach in the inevitable confusion of a coaching search down east.  I’d especially expect Carolina to try to make a run and get their 30-35th commitments for the year.

Syracuse is a huge upgrade from ECU in so many ways. Congrats to Skip. He earned it. But rebuilding that program won’t be easy.

Any ideas on who ECU might be looking to?

I heard Lee Fowler volunteered to head the search committee

I am still surprised that Holtz didn’t receive more interest from all of the southern schools whose jobs have been open over the past two years.

Used to be a good job. BCS is Skip’s goal. Good job by ‘Cuse. RIP Pirate football.

SU has a big contract there, something ECU couldn’t touch. The money from BBall rev. is outstanding and I beleive that the big east lets football teams take all/most of bowl money. That would give them incentive to offer more in hopes that he can get them in contention quickly.

Really smart move by Holtz, take the big money and still be at a school some might consider a stepping stone rather then a final destination.

Only 24 hours from Tulsa, and already Holtz is apparently going to Skip town, right after accepting a bowl bid, no less. Here’s hoping Holland does exactly what Michigan AD Bo Schembechler did to Coach Bill Frieder in 1989. What’s next, Dr. Lou, Notre Dame in 2010?

Good luck with that Skip, you’ll need it-in orange rust of N.Y.

Also, you APP.State fans -just shut up- Richmond asswhipping – No 4th title – get over it.

WTF Turfpack? Richmond did toast us, and no there won’t be a 4th title This Year, but I sure as hell don’t need that attitude. jeeze.

CBS Sports says he has not taken the job yet. One thing that I found interesting this past weekend is that Dr. Lou had more confidence in ND beating USC then ECU beating Tulsa. He really thought ND had a chance against USC, and that ECU needed to stay close with Tulsa but he didn’t think that was possible. As a former coach at State, am I supposed to like Lou? Because I really can’t stand to listen to him talk.

    Everett,

Actually we’re enjoying (?) a very mild winter thus far. It’s been upper 40’s the past few days. No snow. It’s been colder in the southern US than here. Very weird. Oh well, it’s better than 6 months of winter. Go Global Warming!

Is it true that Lee has promised to loan out TOB to ECU to help out until they can find a new head coach?

History lesson on Pat Dye to Wyoming…rumor afterwards was that he quit at ECU in order to be considered for the NC State coaching job after Bo Rein left State for LSU in 1979. Evidently UNC system had some rule or informal policy at the time that UNC system members couldn’t hire coaches away from each other. So Dye resigns at ECU to get around that, and then Willis Casey goes and hires Kiffin (probably the worst coaching pick Casey ever made up to that time, exceeded only by Tom Reed three years later). This all could be urban legend though…does that History of Wolfpack Football book by Doug whatshizface talk about this?
