Great Read on O’Brien and His Coaching Philosophy

Update 1: Instead of making a new entry, I’ll add this bit here: Tom O’Brien said today that starting safety Clem Johnson will indeed be ready to play tomorrow in the Pizza Bowl.  This is a positive for the Pack as it adds depth to a defensive secondary that’s sure to be tested all day by the big-play oriented Rutgers offensive.

I’m currently spending some time with family down in Alabama, getting ready for tomorrow’s action in the Papa John’s Bowl down in Birmingham.  I found this article in the papers down here, and thought I’d pass along a link to the electronic version for you to enjoy.  See y’all at the game.

O’Brien Learned His Bowl Skills The Hard Way

North Carolina State coach Tom O’Brien discovered a bowl secret the hard way. His first bowl game at Boston College, a 62-28 loss to Colorado at the Insight.com Bowl in 1999, opened his eyes about how to win in the postseason.

“They went to win the game. We just went to go to a bowl game,” O’Brien said. “You have to go with the intent to win a football game, and we did that from that point on at Boston College and they still haven’t lost.”

That’s our guy! (But I could have done without the usual Foulup BS – as if he actually had anything to do with TOB being at NCSU.)

OMG, it’s the “fucilities thing” again! Hope Lee didn’t read that other article about Birmingham building a $500 million domed football statdium so they could attract an SEC team to the bowl. Lee needs to get back to work to match his paltry $100 million upgrade to football facilties!

Off topic, but has anyone read all of the glowing reports about how great the Muffler Bowl was yesterday, how it did great things for Carolina football, how wonderful the experience was, how Butch is taking the Tarholes to great heights next year, yada yada. Oh, by the way, I think they did mention once that Carolina lost!

I thought Duke played pretty well against WV.

Really says something about a guy who leaves a job with a strong team, comfortable future, and a great NFL QB and then still takes a challenging rebuilding job in the same conference with losing seasons likely while do the rebuilding.

I was happy when we got this guy and have been patient and that patience has paid off and will provide larger dividends in the coming years.

Now if we can just show a little more patience in basketball.

Speaking of basketball (BoKnowsNCS71), a picture in today’s Greensboro News & Record would be a great marketing idea for Wolfpack ACC basketball this season. It was a Detroit Lions fan wearing a shirt that said 0-16- YES WE CAN.

But until after tomorrow’s bowl win, please……. no more mention of basketball!

It was so great to see UNX lose. Yates threw the ball right to the defender. WVU gave UNX every chance to win but they still couldn’t pull it out. AWESOME!

I don’t think that I have ever pulled for Carolina to win in any sport, but the Big East fans are just so insufferable that I almost had a change of heart, just to be able to shut them up. The Rutgers fans are talking an amazing amount of trash on the ESPN Game Conversation thread. Please pound them TOB and Pack.

Try to understand Plywood that we are talking about Jersey, to talk trash is to breathe….it’s an involuntary action.

Needless, our team will come to play. Also, I have learned, and as our team proved to the Heels this year….the best way to shut up a trash talker is to punch them in the mouth. (41-10).

    Is it 3:00 Est yet?

UNChoke. Gotta love the change in blue statement. “Uh, as the coach here, I ain’t particularly happy with the school colors.”

Who was the Miami coach when the U showed up in military fatigues at a bowl one year?

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against fatigues. I thought the Army uniforms with fatigue pants and helmets was so cool for a military academy.

    ^Jimmy Johnson.

Congrats to Philip Rivers and his Chargers rallying from a 3-game hole w/ three to play to make the playoffs!

Philip had a tremendous season … He didn’t get a Pro Bowl nod (whatever), but maybe he can help the Chargers make some noise in the postseason … Well Done!

    Now, LET’S GO PACK!!!

How BMFD manages to lose with, as TOB said, “all those well coached athletes running around and everything.” is a mystery to me. LOL The WV coached blew enough smoke up Butches ass to float a very large balloon. He’d “like to play more ACC schools, just not Carolina.” Yeah, right Brer Rabbit.

^Bill Stewart REALLY went out of his way to kiss Chief’s ass after the game on Saturday … not really sure why

It’s expected to be a good sport / cordial, but Stewart practically pulled down Cheif’s pants and started b***ing

I shouldn’t be mean to the guy, though … He seems an affable sort

In yesterday’s paper for Winston – there were banner headlines as if UNC was playing for in a BCS bowl game. It’s fascinating to watch the lack of objectivity in this state, and in the profession of journalism in general. Lennox Rawlings – who gets lots of digs and cheapshots in his column didn’t have any for the Carolina fans – but sure did get some in on Butch. To me, this says a lot – I don’t think a lot of fans are happy w/ Butch’s game coaching decisions (of course, they are better than John Fox’s these days) or dealing w/ his name coming up for every major football job opening.

As for us, I’m looking forward to our game w/ Rutgers. It will be a tough match up for us. Teel is the best QB we’ve played in a while. TOB made an excellent point that they were breaking in a lot of new coaches early in the year. Should be interesting, we’ve seen how RW’s avoidance of TO’s can keep us in games when the opponent’s offense is scoring. And we’ve seen how this same avoidance of TO’s can create blowouts in our favor when our D is forcing TO’s.

Can anyone explain why Anthony Hill has no eligibility left?
He lost an entire season in’07 so why wouldn’t he get a med
    redshirt year?

He may want to go pro anyway but every article I have read say he is through at State without any mention of the lost year.

  19. SEAT.5.F.2 12/29/2008 at 12:17 PM #

Because there is no difference between medial RS/ and plain old RS. It’s just semantics.

If a player is only RS because he is injured and it occurs for two seasons then he /she could apply for a sixth year eligibilty

If anyone is going to record the game this afternoon, I’d like to get a copy of the DVD and will pay you for it. I’ve got to leave shortly for the beach and we won’t get there until game is well underway. Bad planning on my part!

Thanks!! Just got a new 46 inch Samsung for Christmas and wanted to watch the game on it!

  21. WilmingtonWolf05 12/29/2008 at 2:40 PM #

I’m going to record it on my DVR, and then transfer it to the new DVD recorder I got a few days ago. I’ll let you know how it turns out, and if it works then we’ll figure out how to get it to you. If you would like one, send me an email to [email protected]. Thanks!

    GO WOLFPACK!
