ECU Game Entry

Pregame Comments
We have already explained that tonight’s game vs ECU is not a cupcake game as most people would presume.

If you want to research the Pirates a little more then ‘Yet Another’ has more on the Pirates here and Section Six has his preview here.

Hopefully the fact that we have already faced Stephon Curry will benefit us against Sam Hinnant. Of course, it doesn’t help that our best athlete and occassionally best defender, Courtney Fells, is questionable tonight with the same injury that neutralized him against Davidson.

Sam Hinnant–Is there any reason why he didn’t get recruited to NC State? Starting off great on offense, terrible on defense. Need to at least stop every other possession.

    What’s with all the three’s?

  3. RabidWolf 12/17/2008 at 7:30 PM #

Fells out tonight….for those who didn’t know already. I like that Costner seems to be hitting so far, and unafraid to shoot. Perimeter D needs to be shored up a bit.

Rebounding is still bad…sigh…ECU’s getting too many offensive rebounds…making this harder than we need to…

  5. seanb724 12/17/2008 at 8:13 PM #

It’s awfully quiet in here… Nice run to start the 2nd half.

  6. Sw0rdf1sh 12/17/2008 at 8:16 PM #

T Ferg hitting the deck and playing some D!

….and yet then he gets a Tech for probably something he was yelling at the bottom of the pile.

I would love for someone to explain why/how Ferguson gets T’d up with a double digit second half lead…

Nice liveblog over at section 6…

  9. SaccoV 12/17/2008 at 8:26 PM #

DBP, it’s obvious. He’s wearing a white jersey and thinks he can play like a Blue Devil.

  10. Gene 12/17/2008 at 8:34 PM #

Anybody know how the double digit lead evaporated? Young is crazy fast…but it seems to have just happened in a flash…

  11. Gene 12/17/2008 at 8:36 PM #

Maybe ECU will just foul out…three guys have fouled out so far…

  12. seanb724 12/17/2008 at 8:41 PM #

Ugh.. Down to a 4 point lead. If we lose this after having the double digit lead and 1/2 their team fouled out, that will be sad. :-/

    we’re outheighting them… let’s shoot 3’s???

I’m tired of hearing the phrase, “Young blows by Degand”.

Javi looked pretty good tonight compared to our other PGs. All you haters need to check that hat at the door.

    Pack Wins!

Well, it looked like we were gonna wax them for a while. Still a good win, they have some 3 point assassins.

Farnold still isn’t back to what he can do.

No Fells and yet we still won, Costner played like a Beast early on but fell off the face of the Earth the last 10 minutes or more.

Game soundly like it got sloppy, the way they like to out down East I guess.

Glad to get a W anytime. RedFred is gonna love it when he see’s the minutes Harris got and the fact we hit 86 w/o Fells.

    Survive and advance.

Now it’s time to cheer ECU on. We need all the quality OOC wins we can get and ECU having a good season would help us out tremendously.

Good win, but I didn’t like the defensive effort outside of the early stretch in the 2nd half. This team is still giving up offensive rebounds and that will hurt them against better teams. Offensively, from listening to the game, the team played well. I really like Tracy Smith down low, but his defense, especially transition defense, is so bad; I now know why Sid hasn’t started Smith much. Good to hear Johnny Thomas getting more time. It’s going to be a tough year, but now I clearly see why other posters (sorry, the exact one escapes me) believe a sneak in spot at the NCAA tournament would be a great accomplishment for this squad. I agree with that assessment of this season completely.

Costner had a lot of rebounds (17 I think). How many did he have stripped away from him? Then they lose their height and he begins shooting 3’s. What is up with this guy? He plays like an All American for one half and then he disappears for the rest of the game. If he would be more protective of the ball and play more inside, he would benefit the team more. Good game by Big Ben and Javi “not so speedy” Gonzales.

  23. Gene 12/17/2008 at 9:08 PM #

“Then they lose their height and he begins shooting 3’s.”

They double / triple teamed every time someone caught the ball in the post. Made going inside hard.

ECU’s D was actually better when their bigs fould out

they were quick to double/ strip the post, so we ended up shooting wide open 3s…. just missed

FD looked good drving to the basket but got out of position on D against young

CJ and Thomas really provide defensive energy that we need off the bunch
    solid win with no fells

I actually think that this is a big win for the team. It sounds like we gave a good effort again today – and like we executed a decent game plan. I’ll take it. I’m still not happy about the rebounding, but I think we’re heading in the right direction for this year.

It will be interesting to see what can happen this year if we can ever get healthy.
