Bob Gibbons Has a “Gut Feel” That John Wall Picks NC State

Speaking of carousels, there’s always the basketball recruiting one, and it never stops spinning.

N&O/CO NC State beat writer Ken Tysiac posted a pair interesting quotes from hoops recuiting super-guru Bob Gibbons:

Gibbons said he has a “gut feeling” that Wall will choose N.C. State rather than Memphis or Baylor. But he said even if Lowe doesn’t get either of those marquee players, he will have a solid class.

Gibbons (espn.com, others) also said that State has a shot at Derrick Favors too, but labeled it as “wishful thinking:”

“N.C. State has positioned themselves where this may be just wishful thinking, but they apparently have a shot at John Wall and Derrick Favors,” Gibbons said.

It’s hard to say from an outside vantage point what Favors might do; he came to Raleigh but skipped Memphis and Florida State trips, but on the other hand, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution seems pretty resolute that Favors will pick between Georgia Tech or Georgia.

Where it gets interesting is that Wall once casually remarked that he’d like to play with Favors.  If (and it’s a bold, capital letter, italicized IF)  one or the other picks NC State first, will the other follow?

One thing is certain: Sidney Lowe is working on bringing the top recruits in the prep game to Raleigh, and that he has already secured a very good class for next year.  If he gets one or both Wall or Favors, NC State’s incoming class will take a backseat to no one — not even UNC or Duke.

i still dont see how all this recruting fluff is going to pad the reality that our team is still going to be horribly coached and leave everyone disappointed next year…

I’m going to take a moment to stick my neck out for our resident Hole reader … I certainly have a high amount of disdain for the team he pulls for, but I’ve never seen chris92heel make any type of inflammatory or “troll-ish” type of comments on here, that I recall

I think he’s here b/c this is the best blog out there w/ an intelligent community and great discussions … and it’s an NC State blog! 🙂 … He knows where it’s really at 😉 (j/k, chris)

… On another note, I’ve expressed reservations about signing Wall before, but I’m agreeing more and more w/ redfred’s point of view about going after the best … Seriously, why not? … I don’t want thugs or criminals (and I’m not saying Wall is either) or to even come close to cheating – but who’s to say that Sidney Lowe and NC State can’t have a positive impact on a young man’s life and bring about some character changes (if you say anything about Lowe’s son that’s just a low blow) … I don’t want to become Oklahoma State under Eddie Scumbag Sutton, but as long as we’re doing things on the up-and-up let’s go for the best

Chrisheel, I was so wrung up yesterday that I misread your comment concerning our chances with Favors vs Wall. I appologize my man.

Only one thing you need to know about Wilkins: Wilkins always seemed to lead or come close to leading the conference in offensive rebounds because he led the conference in missed layups

  6. wufpup76 11/04/2008 at 1:53 PM #

^Amen to that, GAWolf … I have never seen more missed layups from an individual or a team than on that 2000-01 squad … it was unreal … We had consistent shooting percentages as a TEAM in the 20 percentile range … it was an AWFUL team, particularly offensively

But hell, as strong a state fan as noah just got hated on so :shrug again

One need only consider the source.

    A poo-flinging, mouth-breathing, booger-eating, glue-huffing moron…is always going to be a poo-flinging, mouth-breathing, booger-eating, glue-huffing moron.

Looks like Favors is going to announce sooner than later per zagsblog and rivals.

Zagsblog also had a bit about LaQuinton Ross, a top five recruit for 2011, playing in a tourney earlier. Apparently his mother was in the crowd wearing a “bright red NC State t-shirt”. Ross confirmed that NC State was on his short list.

happypackdad, besides stating the obvious by acknowledging more of your negative spewing, there are people around here who still believe that Sidney Lowe deserves a proper amount of time to really get his bearings at this level. He does know exactly what it takes, really the only question that’s remaining is, does he still have it in him to convey that knowledge and desire to the kids that are under his charge?

We’ll all see shortly, if it’s actually just “recruiting fluff” with no new substance to back it up, I will be the first to admit I have been wrong. I hardly believe that will be the case though.

Redfred, you misread HPD’s comment…he was saying WTF?? in response to inhoc’s comment above. Just wanted to clarify, as I agree with you and HPD that Sid deserves a proper amount of time, and I believe he and the staff will turn things around. We’re going to surprise some folks this year, and our 2009 class is going to open some eyes, too.
