…And Then You Win By A Little…

Bobby Bowden first remarked that programs that are improving first lose by a little, then they win by a little.

We remarked after the near-win against Boston College that the Wolfpack was close — that they lost by a little against the Eagles, 38-31, in a game where the NC State defense could not make that final stand and allowed BC to sneak away with a hard-fought win against a never-say-die NC State team that was undermanned and often outplayed yet had the game tied until less than a minute was left to play.  #25 Wake Forest was not so lucky in a rainy and windswept Carter-Finley Stadium this afternoon as the Wolfpack held on for a 21-17 win that served notice to their two remaining opponents that they can’t count on an easy win against a 4-6 team.  State held on, and won by a little today.

This leaves NC State still alive in the mythical state championship of North Carolina, with victories over ECU, Duke and Wake Forest.  The hated Tar Heels remain, and State needs the win to keep their slim bowl hopes alive.

The last part of what Bobby Bowden said?  “…Then you win by a lot.”  If that were to happen as soon as next Saturday, there will be a lot of extremely happy Wolfpack fans late next Saturday afternoon.  The Heels are a solid team, however, and right now, if it were given, I think it safe to say that any of us would take a nailbiting Wolfpack win.   Big wins might come later, but one thing is sure, and Carolina had better be wary of this: NC State may not have an accomplished 2008 resume, but this team never says die and UNC is in for a fight from start to finish next weekend.

We’ll have much more to say about this win and the upcoming game against the hated Tar Heels later, but right now, we’re going to celebrate and let you add your comments.

  8. spanky 11/15/2008 at 7:48 PM #

Nate Irving had 13 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack… IIRC

And a HUGE goal line stuff for one of those TFL

Go War Tide! Or is it Crimson Eagles? Hoping to see an undefeated Bama team play Florida. Should be an interesting game! For the life of me, I cannot see how Ole Miss won!

Nate looked to be back at 100%. Several big plays in short yardage and generally a force against the running game. Wasn’t too evident in pass.

Willie Young was fantastic with big short yardage plays and key pressures and sacks. AMC made the final play, dropping off the rush and spying Riley on 4th down. When Riley broke out of the pocket to buy time, AMC raced over half the field and brought him down near the boundary.

FWIW, NC State vs UNO is available as video at Pack Pass ($10 for monthly subscription).

HELLO FOLKS, REDFRED HERE, FOR SHARP’S MAGIC, RAZOR THIN, CAR JACK, AND CAP SNAFLER!!! or something like that. Who knows? I ordered my ass off today though.

Seriously though, and I know that I usually post whatever and don’t pay attention anyway, but how about a BB thread for those others around here who actually try to stay on topic. I think saw where someone mentioned that there were some signings that might impact our own program. ???

From the sound of it, the start of the BB game isn’t going too well. Lowe just yanked the entire starting line up. We shall see.

Um, taking into account the duo of radio announcers that are making this game sound as exciting as watching paint dry, but from the sound of it our Wolfpack BB team has come out flat, once again.

I knew Sidney Lowe as a player, and I do not understand this at all.

    15-10 NO

It’s simply impossible to overstate the difference a single player… the quarterback… can have on a team.

If any of our other options is on the field today instead of RW, we don’t have a prayer in hell. And if Owen Spencer could catch a cold, we’d have won by 2-3 TD’s.

Make no mistakes. We whipped Wake’s asses today. That was awfully good stuff to watch.

I feel a whole hell of a lot better about the uncch game than I did before watching their offense go COMPLETELY anemic against the twerps today. If that offense takes the field next Saturday, we win.

    Fells, with a DOL.

For those who don’t know, that’s a patented Courtney Fells, Dribble-Off-Leg.

Announcers just used the term, “lack of fire”, that is NOT good.

Obe wan Okia-Spectum-acore, good ball player.

So I’m just returning from attending my first game this year and man did I pick a doozy to go to (and no I’m not fair-weather fan), I’m just a broke recent grad that can’t afford to get the lifetime rights under the Lee Fowler regime ;). Some thoughts…
If not for 13 and his huge drops I think we put them away early and cruise to a romp.
It was nice to get back to business against Wake. I’ll still say that to me Wake Forest will always be a bottom dweller. Their success has been a fart in the wind and it won’t last. Their running east to west crap and chop blocking people and cutting their knees out disgusts me (others have mentioned it on here before). It’s just cheap.
Also, others refer to Jim Grobe as a “gentlemanly” coach. I personally can’t stand him because going back to that thrashing they hung on us in 03′ he was very arrogant during game week and suggested that we were looking past them for Ohio State. I don’t think that was the case as they had given us fits in the years prior to that but damn, can you blame us for being hyped when we were highly nationally ranked and making a trip to the famed Horseshoe???!!!! The first team from the state of NC to ever go up there?!
The 05′ game against them in CF really upset me because while it was early in the season, we were in the division lead and driving to win that game. More so though, while everyone always loves to talk about UNC streak of futility in Charlottesville, Wake had not won in Raleigh since 84′. No one mentioned that. It was nice to get back to business tonight as we improved. They should be arriving back at their high school stadium right about now!!!!

“can anyone comment on the play of Nate Irving today? i only got to see one or two series’ before the video feed died…”

Nate was just your ordinary, everyday All America — out there rushing the passer, stuffing the run, pressuring the QB, flushing Skinner out and tackle.

The Pack did not go to a prevent at the end. Praise Jesus. This is our third win were a 4th and 1 stop was a big part. We still gave up the short pass but not with the cushion we had been.

NC STATE TIED AT THE HALF!!!

…with 31 points, against new orleans

Yeah, Fells with another DOL to start the 2nd half.

  22. Dogbreath 11/15/2008 at 9:15 PM #

Courtney Fells makes Ish Benjamin look like a ball control wizard.

We actually blitzed the hell out of Wake today. Irving and AMC really make us an entirely different D.

Jeremy Gray had a very good game today too. I thought Audie Cole played pretty good the snaps he was in.

Hey, great game for Hill today – he made some big catches.

  24. cWOhLFrPAiCKs 11/15/2008 at 9:59 PM #

Nate seemed to be blitzing a lot more towards the end of the game, maybe explaining his absence in the passing game there, but I thought overall he played well. Great to see the defense step up and win one this year. Great confidence builder for going into Carolina, but if we win there, I think we may have a hard time with Miami, much like last year. Carolina would be too much of an emotional victory for them to be able to get up again against Miami, although maybe O’Brien can learn from last years mistakes. I’ve got faith in a victory at Carolina next week and I’m looking forward to playing for bowl eligibility at home against Miami! GO PACK! And Great Victory! RW is the man!
