Your annual Adrian Wilson entry, III

I’m really not kidding about the title of this entry. See last year’s entry and corresponding videos. It really is time for our annual spotlight on Wolfpack great, Adrian Wilson.

Since the Arizona Cardinals were in town battling the Carolina Panthers last weekend, this year’s entry is primarily brought to us by this article in last week’s Winston-Salem Journal.

When Adrian Wilson isn’t making big hits as the Arizona Cardinals’ strong safety, he can often be found at a designer shoe store that he owns in Scottsdale.

The name of the store?

High Point.

It’s partly a tribute to his home town, where he starred at High Point Andrews before going on to N.C. State and ultimately to the Cardinals as a third-round pick in 2001.

But there’s more to the name than just that.

“It’s a lot of things,” Wilson said in a telephone interview yesterday. “Obviously it is a tribute to my home town, but I also said once I got my own business it would be the high point of my career, and the high point of my life. That’s how it is and that’s pretty much how I want to keep it.”

Life is good for Wilson these days.

The headquarters for my group/division is located in Scottsdale, Arizona. So, I have the pleasure of traveling out there about ever six weeks or so. The folks out there love Adrian. In fact, I’ve heard him (as well as Herb Sendek) on local radio multiple times. It’s pretty cool.

But, this entry can’t be 100% positive. It appears Dave Fleming of the ESPN’s Page2 has a different opinion of Wilson. This article places Wilson into nomination as the NFL’s dirtiest player.

As far as potential successors to [Rodney] Harrison [as the NFL’s dirtiest player] — let’s call them the Flagrant Fraternity — I think most everyone is now present.

I see Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson, fresh off his $25,000 fine for trying to plant Bills quarterback Trent Edwards like a tulip in Week 5.

The hit on Trent Edwards was picture perfect tackling. That doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t have been a fineable offense under the current (& ridiculous) NFL QB rules. However, if he’d have been hitting an RB or WR, it would have been a non-event… unless, of course, you were that RB or WR.

Isn’t the stated job of a strong safety (any strong safety?) to destroy the guy holding the ball?

If you play strong safety, you are essentially a hollow-point bullet. I don’t know why that’s considered “dirty.”

I hate to think of what would have happened to the careers of great SS like Steve Atwater under the current “emphasis.”

As an Andrews grad and high pointer myself it makes me proud. High Point has somehow always linked to State. I used to go to what was then High Point College(now HPU) games to see Kenny Drummond play. Any way, good for Adrian!

At least Wilson is getting alot of national coverage for his play. it always seems like the players called dirty or dirtiest are also the best at their position. For a while there he was considered by many the best underrated safety in the league, probably as a result of playing for the bottom-dwelling cardinals. now that they are winning, however, he should get more coverage. i hope that when NBC goes to flex scheduling later this year, they put the cardinals on. i haven’t seen them play yet, and anquan boldin is on my fantasy team.

When I think of a dirty player, I think of guys like Bill Romanowski.

John Lynch, Harrison, Wilson…those guys just seemed like huge hitters to me.

God I wish we could find another prospect like Adrian for our team now. That guy flat out killed people in college.

Or Doug Plank(?) Chicago Bears safety.

Actually, Adrian wasn’t just a nominee. He was crowned “Dirtiest Player”. Fines and personal fouls were big qualifications for being nominated.

So, does he have a younger brother?

When a player gets suspended for a game and fined $50,000, all for a hit that wasn’t even deemed a personal foul by the officiating crew during the game, then there is something wrong somewhere.

Seems that in wanting to “protect” its (offensive) stars that the NFL is confusing hits that are hard with those that are illegal.

Adrian Wilson is a beast. Guys in the NFL know about him, and know to keep their distance over the middle. Have you all seen that video where he does a standing jump over a 66″ pole? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vL19q8yL54)

Unreal… and he’s built more like an OLB who can run.
