NBA.com: Del Negro gets rolling as Bulls Head Coach

We refer you to our story from June linked here (that includes some great ‘Wolfpack talk’ from the 1980s for those that need a little insight and educating on some topics that comes second nature only to the die-hards)

The Chicago Bulls’ website has a nice article on our own Vinny Del Negro. They are using the same picture that we ran in our entry on the day Del Negro was hired (but has since been taken down off the internet).

With the addition of guard Vinny Del Negro, Jim Valvano’s NC State Wolfpack began a run of five consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, twice reaching the Elite Eight (1985 & 1986), and a Sweet Sixteen appearance (1989) a year after Del Negro graduated.

In 1987, after a sixth place finish in the regular season, Valvano and Del Negro ingeniously directed the Wolfpack to a surprising run through the ACC Tournament, reaching the title game against archrival North Carolina. With only seconds left on the clock, Del Negro calmly stepped to the line and knocked down two clutch free throws to give NC State a stunning 68-67 upset victory over the Tar Heels, who had gone undefeated in conference play that season.

To date, North Carolina State’s Men’s Basketball program has yet to capture another ACC Championship.

Without looking back at the earlier SFN thread that’s linked above, and if memory serves me correcttly, I believe it was kyjelly who was so excited and happy about Del Negro’s new job.

    Go Vinny!!

Unfortunately, since “North Carolina” is mentioned in the article there is a “North Carolina Ringtones” banner ad on my browser now … please someone gag me before I lose it 🙁

I thought it was bad enough last week when I saw a Wake ringtone in the banner, but a baby blue UNC one does make me want to gag….

I posted that I had read Derrick Favors no longer is favoring the Wolfpack on the previous thread, but I’m sure some of you missed it. I first read a “headline” on scout.com that said exactly this, but I’m not a paying member so I couldn’t read the article entitled “Favors: List Down to Six”. I researched it a little bit and found this article:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/60827-georgia-and-georgia-tech-still-in-the-hunt-for-derrick-favors

which supports what I was afraid of…we aren’t on his short list. It’s down to Georgia, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Connecticut, Kentucky, and Florida State. Maybe the article is wrong, but it did seem to originally have come from Scout which is typically a pretty reliable source.

That article is super weak J V. Probably could have found one identicle to that about JJ last year. Also, what does a paying customer get anyway? If they actually wanted to attract someone to subscribe you would think they would “leak” something once in awhile that actually proved they aren’t just running a chat room. What ever.

“To date, North Carolina State’s Men’s Basketball program has yet to capture another ACC Championship.”

That sucks. Throw in there that it was a sixth place team in the ACC regular season and what you got was the same predicament we are in now. Make a magic ACC tourney run or watch the NC State banners in the rafters of the RBC get swallowed up by Hurricane ones.

The earlier report about Favors’ “final six” was inaccurate and should have also included NCSU. Last week Favors dropped UConn and released a trimmed list of GT, Ga, FSU, KY, Memphis, and NCSU.

Everything I have read from our sites indicates that we are still in good shape with Favors…no need to go into meltdown mode.

I hope “rkw” is right. I just know that there are two recruiting sites out there that I like…Rivals and Scout are them. Scout can be a little slow updating their site and all, but they’ve always (in my experiences) been a reliable source. Hopefully “rkw” is correct and Favors is still considering the Wolfpack.

My understanding is that Scout accurately quoted Favors’ coach who misspoke in leaving NCSU off the stated list. The same coach has since given a list that contains NCSU (see the AJC article announcing that UConn had been dropped leaving six schools in play). The fact that NCSU is still a possibility has been corroborated by multiple sources who have proved reliable in the past.

In short – no reason to just “hope.” NCSU is still a possibility for Favors (unless a whole lot of people are being deliberately misled).

Take message board comments for what they are worth, but i read on the scout.com board that we are getting an official visit from favors in like a week or so. i’ve also heard it’s a long shot that any out of state school signs him. but as long as we have a shot, sid has proven already he can land the big fish, out of state big fish as well.

Why would anyone melt down over not getting Derek Favors? In the days of one-and-done players (even when they’re not good enough to start, like Gerald Wallace), the importance of a single recruit is roughly equivalent to the importance of a single snowflake to a blizzard.

With Vinnie Del Negro earning the nod at Chicago, Nate McMillian’s many successes as a player and a coach, then Derrick Whittenburg the player and coach, Sidney Lowe in the NBA and now in Raleigh, not to mention the success that other Wolfpack BB players from that era have experienced in the NBA, of even elsewhere later in their lives, it really makes me wonder what some people’s definition of “CLASS”, or rather a “CLASS ACT”, really is around here???
