The Natives are Restless in Blacksburg

Apparently it isn’t just NC State fans who dare to question the leaders of their athletic department.

While NC State’s athletics department has struggled as one of the ACC’s worst overall programs during the last decade, our fans have responded by supporting NC State at record levels.

Conversely, Virginia Tech has actually been one of the success stories in the Atlantic Coast Conference the past several years. Their athletics department finished #37 in last year’s Sears Director Cup standings, an ALL-TIME high for the Hokies!

Believe it or not, the Hokies’ program under fire is Frank Beamer’s football program which he has turned into one of the nation’s premiere programs. Check out these numbers for Beamer’s program:

-One of two programs in the nation to win at least 10 games the last four years (USC, VPI)

-Won at least 10 games in the 9 of the last 13 seasons

Won two ACC championships since joining the league in 2004

Those numbers are simply amazing for a school that had no tradition going back approximately 15 years ago.

Joe Ovies from 850theBuzz caught Virginia Tech fans criticizing Beamer’s program on this week’s radio show:

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer got one such call from “Jason from Arlington” during Hokie Hotline earlier this week. Essentially, Jason wanted offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring gone and Beamer told the caller that he was “out of whack.” The phone call isn’t isolated, with the topic popping up on messageboards and Hokie fans in the Triangle phoning in to express their displeasure with Stinespring. Beamer has a message for all the fans who want the offense to go in a different direction:

“I’ll schedule an appointment with anybody on Friday afternoon, and if any of you can come in there and show me you’re more knowledgeable than Bryan… I’m going to listen to them. Until then, though, I’m going to listen to Bryan.”

Don’t tempt them coach, or you’ll get a bunch of NCAA ‘09 XBox jockeys wanting to show you how great they run the option with Tyrod Taylor.

VPI fans also booed their team during a game in 2005. Florida State fans also booed their team on the very same day as did Ohio St. fans and Michigan St. fans a few weeks prior.

It is good to see that these schools didn’t experience any negative recruiting impact as a result of all of their booing.

That’s funny, I thought “booing” was invented last Saturday at C.F. with NC State fans the first to ever express discontent with ___________ (depending on your particular reason, choose from: coach, coaching decision, former coach, quarterback, AD, general state of life) in such a way. I’m sure all of those other fans had good reasons whereas ours are just impatient, ungrateful, and non-cutters-of-slack.

I’m not sure what the problem is but VT’s football program has definitely its lustre.

As far as I can tell, the alumni are fine with Beamer. I have no clue what the Walmart VT fans think, because I will never waste time listening to talk radio to hear what they think or say.

However, most (if not all) of the VT fans that I know want a different offensive philosophy and a more potent offensive attack. If the offensive philosophy comes from Beamer, then changing OCs will have no effect. But of course, that chain of logic is too complicated for most Walmart fans that often call into talk-radio shows.

Changing offensive schemes might help VT over the long haul, but won’t help them this year. They have problems at QB and on the OL, and question marks at WR and RB. Right now VT needs more players before changing coaches or philosophies will have much effect.

I too have wondered about Va. Tech over the last couple of years. Bud Foster hasn’t changed but it seems his defenses are not quite what they were 5 years ago? For sure their OL has dropped off but is the whole thing related to the athletes they are now getting in?

*Sarcasasm Alert* Why don’t they just bring in Norm Chow.

I expect Beamer has conservative offensive tendencies. That usually goes with the territory with coaches who value special team play and field position.

    VAWolf82,

why are you all over those Walmart fans of VPI? Do they exist? I thought “Walmart” fans were a UNC legacy!

I live in Central VA and believe me when I say that Walmart sells plenty of orange t-shirts for both VA schools.

Once again, I have to bring up a fan encounter from one of my last visits to C-F.

We run the ball and Andre Brown gets tackled in the backfield. A guy behind me stands up and SCREECHES, “THROW THE DAMN BALL!!!”

On the next play, Evans drops back to pass and throws a pick. Without the slightest hint of irony, the same guy stands up and yells, “RUN THE DAMN BALL!!!”

Lou Holtz was sitting behind you at the game Noah?

Wow, another coach who’s not impressed with the knowledge base of the internets loonies.

Dear Lord, please keep Russell Wilson safe from a serious spinal or head injury this weekend. we… nc State fans deserve at least that. i wouldnt want to put my worst enemy behind that O-line right now. its virtual suicide. i dont see why TOB is so upset with the booing. We might have saved Daniel Evans’ life! D Ev wouldnt last 3 more games behind that O-line without a spinal or head injury of his own.

The way i see it, we did the freakin kid a favor

and again the most ironic thing about all of this is that Chuck Amato was indignant abput the fact that he was fired!

    Nice one, Chuckallyall!

I think maybe Beamer is recruiting less Vicks/DeAngelo Halls, so although they may not be as athletic, they aren’t getting arrested as often.

Sidewalk Alumni can be brutal & are the first to turn nasty in my experience.

Finding QB’s is tough. However, I’m pretty surprised to see VT in trouble on the OL for the second year. You’d think that with VT’s strong recruiting and the long tenure of its staff, there’d be a chain of RS OL’s running halfway out of the stadium. Ditto for RB.

They are OK, but only an awful ACC is going to keep them in the bowls this year.

Sorry to go off topic, but I am watching Crapolina, and damn if their pants are DOOK BLUE! lmao

Sorry for the back to back off topic but ANOTHER BLOWN KNEE. I’m on the edge with season ending injuries, I cant take it anymore.

I wont pretend to know more than the coaching staff but I’m still puzzled by running draws when we can’t throw the ball and shotguns on 3rd and 1 (when we can’t throw the ball AND we have a center who has little to no experience). I guess there’s some coaching-secret book that explains all the wisdom behind such decisions that us common-folk aren’t smart enough to grasp.

The injuries are clearly more of the Curse of the Valvano. Nothing else can explain it. We should invite one of those ghost shows on Discovery Channel to do a show in Raleigh. Or we could have an old-fashioned seance, I reckon. Damnit. I’m sorry for Kushner, and the rest of the guys that work so hard to have to sit for the season. I wish him well in his recovery.

The Heels are going to shag us rotten. As will the Pirates. And before them the Tigers. I still have hope that TOB is going to get the ship righted…. I just don’t know if I’ll be even remotely interested in Wolfpack Football by the time that happens.

  19. RBCRowdy 09/11/2008 at 9:44 PM #

Don’t panic GAWolf, the Heels are a fraud. ECU, however, will kick out rear ends.

  20. Mike 09/12/2008 at 8:06 AM #

Hard to say the Heels were a fraud last night. Rutgers did not look very good, but the Heels looked sharp. Those WR’s are good and will open up the running game for them.

While I think that high expectations are fine, I don’t think that VT fans and others mentioned here justify us in our booing. Booing is a reflection of our values in society, where we must be pleased over any concern for how it affects others. There are ways to show displeasure with our program.

Sometimes booing may be understandable: the Clemson game a few years back where CTC kept getting boos after about half a dozen defensive offsides penalties in the game and the players kept doing it without being replaced. However, that doesn’t mean that booing is the right case when one is disappointed, and especially we can’t justify ourselves from the actions of other fans. That kind of logic simply breaks down if followed to it’s conclusion (i.e. other fan bases are throwing batteries, so we’re ok if we do too).

I think what it shows is that everyone now realizes success is possible with the expansion of TV coverage. Recruiting is not even, but more even because of many factors. But the inability to keep that success long term (look at FSU, Miami, Nebraska, etc.) shows that it is now harder to keep it and fans are not happy that they can’t always have success (who is!?). But we have to realize that success is hard to get and fleeting, but achievable. I don’t think booing helps any of this.
