Our Best Pitch

The following was submitted to us by our old friend, SMD. The timing of the piece was perfect as Jerricho Cotchery was featured last night in a FANTASTIC piece on ESPN’s television show, E:60. If you didn’t see it, you need to find a replay of it and watch it. It was summed up by New York Jets Head Coach, Eric Mangini, “It’s hard to get better than Jerricho Cotchery”

Television producers in the NFL have it hard. Each game is such a big event that there are many different story angles to cover. How can they possibly decide which stories to highlight? If only there were some sort of professional who could pitch them story ideas. If only there were some sort of document that producers could read over, that has the research for a given story already completed. This document might look something like this;

RIVERS AND COTCHERY REUNITED IN BATTLE ON MONDAY NIGHT

Raleigh, NC – When the San Diego Chargers and New York Jets meet on Monday night, one of college football’s greatest passing combinations will once again share the field, but for opposing teams. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and Jets wideout Jerricho Cotchery played at NC State together from 2000-2003 and provided fans with many wins and a lot of excitement. Rivers threw for 13, 484 yards while wearing a Wolfpack uniform and 3,119 of those yards were passes to Cotchery. While Rivers was finishing fourth on the all-time NCAA passing yardage list, Cotchery was breaking school record for career receptions and 100-yard receiving games. Cotchery’s 3119 yards are second in NC State history only to another NFL great, Torry Holt of the St. Louis Rams.

“The Rivers to Cotchery connection was special,” said NC State Sports Information Director Annabelle Myers. “They had a sixth sense of where each other was at all times. Whenever the defense jumped offsides, Cotchery would take off on a go route and more often than not, Rivers got him the ball. It reminds me of the relationship that Rivers is establishing now in San Diego with Vincent Jackson.”

Though the two Wolfpackers will be wearing different colors tonight, they’ll no doubt greet each other like old friends after the game because they know – the strength of the wolf is the pack.”

For exclusive footage of Rivers and Cotchery in action while playing for NC State, please contact the NC State Sports Information Department.

Of course, this is a mock press release and I am being a little tounge in cheek, but watching the game last night between the Chargers and the Jets, I saw no mention of the special Rivers-Cotchery connection. While it’s possible I missed it, at most the reference was made in passing, the story was certainly not highlighted. And while I don’t have first-hand knowledge of how the NC State SID operates, I do know public relations work and know that television producers LOVE ready-made in-game stories like Rivers-Cotchery, so it’s a pretty safe, but not certain, bet that no serious effort was made to pitch the story.

With more Wolfpackers in the NFL that ever before, these opportunities exist every week. For example, this week’s NFL schedule features the Jets against the Cardinals, aka Jerricho Cotchery against Adrian Wilson. To be sure, not every story is as good as Rivers-Cotchery and many will not get aired. But we at least have to try. If we don’t promote ourselves, no one else will.

My first memory of Jerricho Cotchery was him scoring a nice touchdown against FSU, dropping the ball in the endzone, and trotting off to the sideline like it was no big deal.

I thought “That guy might be special…”

“That RB reminded me alot of the way Eugene ran the ball last year.”

I thought the same thing … that was a tough little runner last night

I was also gonna say, but fell asleep, that I think our kicking game might actually be better than Oregon State’s … AND THEY STILL BEAT USC!!!

I remember Cotchery making an unbelievable catch as a freshman (I can’t remember if he redshirted or not). It seems like it was against Dook, but I might be confusing the games. Rivers threw him a pass low and outside and Cotchery made an spectacular diving catch on his finger tips.

“This is NOT good for college football, unless you want an all SEC championship.”

    You are forgetting Oklahoma.

Plus, any team that gets through the SEC with only one loss (or undefeated) probably deserves to play in the BCS Championship Game.

The USC loss certainly tarnishes the Buckeyes, so hopefully no Mr. Sweater Vest or Buckeyes. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll have a college football finale worth watching past halftime this coming year.

Going back to mentioning the NC STate Rivers/Cotchery connection… If memory serves, ESPN could have seemlessly transitioned to it. I believe this was not the first time Favre has been connected with NC State– did Southern Miss not play us in a bowl game while he was there? (Rhetorical question.. we beat ’em).

That was against Duke and I believe it was the only touchdown of the game that day.

It was one of those games that are scheduled during the State Fair, IIRC and we left our house in N. Raleigh at 9am and missed the kickoff by a couple of minutes.

The pass was a thing of beauty and was as if Rivers had just dropped the ball in Jerricho’s hands. He didn’t miss a stride down the west sideline on his way to the end zone.

We almost lost that game. Duke had a kicker who had a legit shot at a 60-yarder and came up just short at the end in a bid for an upset. Man oh man, we need a kicker like that. Points from the opposition 47 yard line in.

The best SEC deserves a slot, with 2 or even 3 losses. That conference is loaded for bear.

  8. Dr. BadgerPack 09/26/2008 at 10:30 AM #

Of course the SEC deserves ‘A’ slot… It is just very hard to justify 2 (in the title game). The way the human polls invariably work, you would have a team that didn’t even win their division in the game, since the loser of the championship would likely drop. The only way around that is the unlikely event that a 12-0 and 11-1 team meet in the SEC title game and the 11-1 team wins (assume the 1 loss came from the previously unbeaten team).

Screw it. Let’s just have a playoff. 🙂

Longtime lurker and first time poster so please don’t flame me, but I just had to ask highstick what in the WORLD in a football game could be compared to the Bataan Death March? I hope she never makes it on to History or Military Channels, but sounds like she should watch them sometime…

  10. redfred2 09/26/2008 at 11:39 AM #

I don’t know about anyone else, and I probably should feather it back a bit, but I am already getting PUMPED about the game tommorrow!!!

  11. Dr. BadgerPack 09/26/2008 at 11:53 AM #

redfred2- Oh, I’m pumped… I’m just worried about my watching capability given the fact I have Florida to watch at 12:30 and Wisconsin at 3:30… I’m swamped.

  12. McPete 09/26/2008 at 12:33 PM #

I was pumped up enough for this game to actually score some tickets, so i hope they don’t lay an egg. last game i went to was central florida, and i vowed not to get tickets again until i had a little faith in their ability to actually win.

what about wisconsin’s chances to run the table and make it to the championship game? i don’t know much about them personnel-wise, but they are undefeated and in the top 10.

  13. b 09/26/2008 at 12:51 PM #

Wisconsin plays staright-up smashmouth, I think they are susceptible to Illinois and Penn St., but if they run the table they would have a strong case. Ohio St. may have tarnished the whole Big 10, though. If the team that RUNS your conference can’t compete in big games, the rest of the league is punished for it.

  14. Dr. BadgerPack 09/26/2008 at 2:06 PM #

Wisconsin has a first year starter at QB; that is a big problem. And a vulnerable secondary. They have four really nice running backs. Probably the best receiving TE in the country in Beckham and a couple of nice explosive receivers.

Scheduling is on Wisconsin’s side in that they visit Michigan in their first year installing the Rodriguez offense, so they shouldn’t be as strong as in the past. Among the other Big Ten elite, Wisconsin plays host to Ohio State, Penn State and Illinois– and Camp Randall is a very tough venue to play in as the visitor.

Dr. Badger, I didn’t think Florida/Mississippi was on tv? Some of the rebel faithful have upset on their minds. Could be, the Rebs play the Gators very close every year. I don’t think we can pull it out. the local radio guys were trashing Florida fans – guys who pack muscle t-shirts for a road trip and shave their arm pits. lol.

Auburn is in trouble. They may be good, but Franklin’s offense is experiencing a STEEEEEEP learning curve. The faithful are rumbling, big time. Not to mention the constant drum beat that Tubberville is not playing the #2 QB because of racism. Nice. If they lose tomorrow, the Auburn fan base will go freaking ballistic. Especially since everyone, and I mean EVERYONE in Alabama HATES Fullmer.

Alabama has to be able to run the ball tomorrow. The Tide folks think they win with out question. Its like mass hypnosis here. I truly hope they get the b*&^% slap up side the head tomorrow that will bring them back to reality.

Go Pack! I’ll be dvr’ing the game while I am out celebrating the wife’s birthday.

Last saturday I was at one of three bars here in town. The Sweet Potato Queens (Kudzu branch) were meeting, and so I am out on the deck, sitting with one of the husbands, and damn if he’s not an ECU grad. I was polite. He was too. Though he did not buy me a beer.

  17. Dr. BadgerPack 09/26/2008 at 4:54 PM #

Everett– I live in Gainesville. We get Florida out the wazoo on tv. 🙂

  18. SMD 09/26/2008 at 7:25 PM #

I’ve been out of town and not online, so thanks SFN for accepting my submission.

On the topic, if anyone on the board has ever worked with the SID, I’d love to know what the school “typically” does for promotion.

  19. EverettBeez 09/26/2008 at 9:46 PM #

Dr. Badger, I thought you taught at state!
Yes, I heard at happy hour that we (Ole Miss/Fla) are raycon regional with The Daves, joy.
Its a third of the way through the semesters, so I’ve got a big ol’ pile of blue books. why don’t students read the book you TELL them will be on the exam?
that is rhetorical, I never did the reading as a student either.

  20. Dr. BadgerPack 09/26/2008 at 10:04 PM #

I might teach at state in the future… BS at State, PhD at Wisconsin (taught there for a while as an associate lecturer). PostDoc now at UF- BioQuantum Chemistry. Might look to get a slot at state down the road. Or stay down in Florida– I have this thing about snow; rather, I absolutely hate the stuff.

  21. choppack1 09/26/2008 at 11:04 PM #

I can’t believe USC lost last night. Pete Carroll knows his stuff – but I do think he suffers from having to motivate his kids to play in a mediocre conference. I also don’t know why his teams can’t more routinely dispose of a squad like this. If you remember those great FSU squads – they typically took care of business…the key w/ them was staying close…and you rarely got a jump on them like OSU got on USC last night. The trojans are fielded some of the most talented teams in recent history, but they do not take care of business the way they should.

The winner of tomorrow’s Bama – UGa game should be No 1 in the country. Of course, they’ll both have a tough road to hoe ahead.

  22. haze 09/27/2008 at 7:14 AM #

^ USC is brain dead. Ridiculous talent and they lay eggs every year. Carroll needs to keep the Hollywood stars off of the practice field and get those kids focused for more than just the big OOC games. It’s criminal, really.

  23. EverettBeez 09/27/2008 at 9:39 AM #

Global warming will take care of that right Dr. B? You could move back to Wisconsin (I hear Madison is awesome) one day, if only schools would hire their own PhD.s. I’d love to go back to Oxford Mississippi, I can only imagine the folks I’d been rubbing shoulders with this week at the local bars – its a drinking kind of town.
I’d love to go back to Raleigh, but I couldn’t afford to live there, not on a prof’s salary.
