WRAL: Glennon to Redshirt (Plus SFN Analysis of QB Race)

NOTE: We expanded the “Daily Update” blurb with additional analysis. This happens when two of us write an article at the same freaking time!

Tom O’Brien won’t publicly name a starter until he exchanges depth charts with Visor Boy this weekend. Harrison Beck will hold the clipboard as the #3 QB. Full article is here.

Redshirting Glennon is really the only option, given the state of the Pack’s OL. Glennon is likely the QB of the future, and there’s no reason to break him in what is likely to be a losing season. For the record, his mobility is not much better than Evans’, and he could use 10-15 more pounds of muscle before taking hits at this level.

So, where does that leave us? We have heard lots of contradictory information over the past few weeks (almost like guessing the VP picks), but reading the tea leaves (and applying game theory), here’s what I think might be plausibly happening:

1) The job was Wilson’s to lose, and he lost it with a horrible pre-season. The staff is now 100% committed to Glennon for 2009 and beyond, and is no longer eager to take a look at Wilson.

2) Wilson is the starter, and has been all along (as we originally reported). Tom O’Brien and staff have been adroitly managing expectations and using subtle deception. In the media reports, you can tell nobody has any solid information, but everyone seems to project a “lean Evans” vibe.

3) The job was Wilson’s to lose, and he was possibly on the way to losing it (or the staff wanted to make it clear that it was a real possibility). Wilson responded to O’Brien’s expert motivation, and regained the staff’s confidence and the starting job.

For the record, I think it’s likely #3, possibly with a bit of #2 mixed in. South Carolina has game tape only of Evans, and the released offensive stats would indicate Evans in the lead. Thus, USC has to design their gameplan primarily with Evans in mind, unless and until they have concrete reason to believe Wilson will start. Thus, the only logical explanation for holding off the announcement is that Russell Wilson will start.

Yea – It sounds like Wilson has struggled in the scrimmages.

One day, we might be able to have an effective team w/ Evans as QB – but I don’t think we’re there yet.

Very logical analysis, I would tend to agree with you. If its Evans, you’d expect them to be talking up RW more to throw off the scent.

Whichever scenario it is, it’s obvious that at least ‘Coach Fowler’ doesn’t know about it…

Come to think of it, if we really want to throw Spurrier off and Wilson is the starter… someone on the staff should mention to Fowler that Evans is starting…

I really like the way TOB handles the media. He is very smart. My money is on Wilson. Regarding Ty Lawson getting the same deal in court as anyone else would have, is about the same as the deal he got on his … better not say.

I like this decision. This year is a rebuilding year, but still need to shoot for as many wins as possible and try to get into a bowl.

  6. aPACKadeez 08/20/2008 at 3:09 PM #

I like the decision as well. Glennon is our QB of the future, and he needs this year to see how we get SMASHED and what he could be doing in those situations. I think Wilson starts, as he is mobile and from what I’ve read about him is a natural talent. Plus, I thought I’d heard that Wilson will most likely be drafted into MLB next year or the year after? Daniel is just not a very good QB.

  7. Dogbreath 08/20/2008 at 3:14 PM #

Wow. this is exactly how I predicted it would play out in a separate thread, right down to the platooning scenario in the first half of the USC game.

  8. jbwbubba 08/20/2008 at 3:18 PM #

Glennon maybe the QB of the future but if Wilson is the guy he is a redshirt freshman. That means another QB battle next year, if Wilson produces glennon sits. I still wouldn’t be surprised to see Evans start.

I’m just glad Glennon will not waste a year this season and hopefully bulk up! I still believe Evans will start and Wilson will get some reps with specially designed packages for him. Well, whatever happens Coach O’Brien knows what he is doing and will do what is best for the program.

    Good analysis
Redshirting Glennon seems to me the best thing for him and State.
I hope that when Wilson gets hit so hard that the snot bubbles come up in his nose (which will happen in 8 days), he gets up, clears his head, and begins to be able to provide the leadership and decision making (combined of course with the pure athletic ability that he will need behind our line)to get us some decent wins. Sometimes that big hit can take some of the pressure off of a kid in my opinion.
On a solid team, with a solid line, good backs, and good receivers Evans could get by. Unfortunately I think we have so many holes, it will be increasingly tough for him to be successful.
So I think its Wilson starting and lets see if the pressure makes him better or worse.

if you read those TOB comments, or listen to them, you have both available to you, that scenario he mentioned about Wilson being the game and then taking him and letting DE come in so that Wilson can “watch the defense”…freudian slip???

  15. blpack 08/20/2008 at 7:06 PM #

Good call in the long term to redshirt Glennon. I think Wilson starts and Evans plays a lot.

  16. GAWolf 08/20/2008 at 7:54 PM #

Evans is a senior. He’s started or at least played significant minutes in almost every game for us for the past two years. His dad is not only our current color guy, but he’s also a former player and an All-American to boot. It would blow my socks off if anyone but Evans started the first game. He might not finish it, but he’s earned (and his roots have some part in that) the right to start the first game. If Wilson was a prodigy at QB there’s not a whole lot that would change the outcome of the first game during the first quarter. In the alternative one of these is true: 1) Wilson hasn’t impressed or is simply just not ready and/or 2) Evans quite simply gives us the best chance to win. Either way you cut it the right thing to do is start Evans against USC and redshirt Glennon. Obviously we know what woulda coulda mighta happened had Philip Rivers redshirted.

Glennon has to redshirt. That’s a no brainer. Just the same, Evans has to start if for no other reason than its the PC thing to do.

Anyone else hear on the radio tonight that Ware is suspended for academics? W.T.F.

Apologies to change the topic…but there is refreshing b-ball news. Has anyone read the GoPack Q&A with Coach Lowe? He is optimistic that Johny Thomas will be back this year. Most doom sayers on this site thought he was done. Any thoughts or anyone with inside information???

  18. packalum44 08/20/2008 at 8:33 PM #

Staying on topic, good to hear about Glennon though. Anyone watch true freshman and #1 overall recruit QB Jimmy Clausen and Notre Dame last year??? Poor Glennon needs to lose his V-Card first before he leads a team to a bowl game.

packalum44, thanks for pointing me to Gopack for the Lowe interview, I hardly check over there anymore except to view the final stats after the games. That was a good interview though, and there were some really good and positive things mixed with a few, maybe not so good sounding things. For the most part though, Lowe was very positive and he wasn’t afraid to say this group WILL PLAY HARD this season. I don’t think that anyone would believe that Sidney Lowe wasn’t well aware that some of his players gave a pitiful account of themselves last season, but I admire the Coach for directly pointing it out now, and saying that attitude will be changing THIS SEASON.

Lowe said that this year’s team will play hard and give their all, and this will be a team that will be fun to watch, and one we (fans) will be proud of.

Don’t forget you said that Coach Lowe, it’s one of those quotes that shapes people’s expectations, and it will stick with you throughout the entire season. Just ask your only graduate from last season, he’ll tell you.

That’s encouraging regarding JT. He has the ability to play a north/south fast paced game, even if he looses a little flexibility and verticle.

It would be nice to pair him with Degand on the floor to accelerate the tempo and and have guys who aren’t super quick (Ferg & Horner) as secondary break guys who can spot up for three. Before UNC got Hansbrough this was their #1 offensive strategy.

Traps, TO’s, box out’s and outlet passes are still the biggest obstacle stopping this team playing “Sid’s game”. Not athleticism, or Degands knee or Thomas’ surgery.

I just hope the Danny Evans that starts the first half against USC has more poise than the Danny Evans who played the first half of the UCF game last year. Embarassing — tha was. Had it not been for my buddy Jim Beam and and invite into the new suites — I’d have left at the half and missed a good second half.

(pedant alert) There is a typo in the headline. (/pedant)

“I really hope Johnny Thomas is going to be ready to go from day one, because fans are going to love him. His talent is playing hard, all the time.”

This is ALL I have ever heard about this guy. Anyone that seems to have met this guy or watched him play have always said that he’s the “Give 110% EVERY play” type of person. I don’t care if he doesn’t have the 42″ vertical anymore, if he still plays hard and plays well, i’m all for him.

I think what we’ll see is a gradual handing over of the offense to Wilson. Against the REAL Carolina…I suspect Evans will get to run the first series. The second series will be Wilson’s and will be heavily scripted. From there, it will largely depend on the level of success Wilson had on that scripted drive and the feel of the game. I suspect that in game one we will see equal amounts of Evans and Wilson which should help to keep the Cocks on there heels.

I think you’ll see Wilson get the majority of the snaps (and the start) for the William and Mary game. Game three will probably be the last game we’ll see Daniel Evans if Wilson is the dynamic gamer we all envision him to be at his best.

Some people love Evans, some people hate him. Personally I’ve never really felt that he was the majority of our offensive problems. I’ve always felt it was the o-line and a little bit of play calling that held us back. However, I am looking forward to having a QB whom is mobile enough to avoid some of the pressure and has an arm that is big enough to force defenses to respect our ability to hit receivers in stride on outs.

I am new to this site so I am excited to leave my first post. It is late in this blog so I am not sure how many people are still reading. I just want to say that I feel that this is the best news of the football season. I can now enjoy the rest of the season knowing that the future of the Wolf Pack is going in a great direction. Think how great of a recruiting tool this will be. There is now doubt that “The Marine” will put together a top notch line in 3 years. I think this year people will be suprised with how good our O line will perform. With a good O-line and a Phillip Rivers like quarterback in the wings “The Marine” will draft I mean recruit top shelf WRs and RBs easily and swiftly. I heard that he offered Usain Bolt a scholarship and because of Glennon being redshirted he has us on his top three. Does anyone now how many years of eligability he has left. I think he will get “Jaw Bone” Bill Cowher to help recruit and coach the LBs. The future once again looks bright for Wolf Pack football. This is a time to rejoice. I see Favors and Wall both signing to give us a fab five. Believe in miracles they happen everyday.
